How to Bring Common Sense to Xianxia World - Chapter 170: Prelude to Engagement

Chapter 170: Prelude to Engagement
— A Week Later – Thousand Treasure City Outskirt —
At the grand waterfall, the place where various animals and spirit beasts gathered peacefully to drink from the lake atop the cliff, a modest sized estate stood not far from the water. The elevated position of the estate, built upon a castle like foundation, allowed the people inside to enjoy the mesmerizing view of nature.
The estate was newly built, and many servants bustled about as they carried newly made furniture into the residence.
A lady in simple yet clean and elegant clothes oversaw the servants’ work. Her smile was full of satisfaction and calm. It was as if the scene before her was something she had dreamed of her entire life.
The girl was none other than Xiao Mei, Yun Feng’s childhood sweetheart.
At that moment, the sound of wind whooshing through the air came from the sky. She raised her head and saw the man she trusted with her life.
It was Yun Feng, now with both of his arms intact. In his right arm, he carried a large spirit boar while riding a flying sword. He descended into the estate and landed from the sky.
“Look at this, Meimei. I got a big one today. I just learned a barbecue recipe from Brother Wei. I will grill this one for you!” Yun Feng said with a smile.
Then an old man around sixty years old walked toward them. His sharp eyes looked at Yun Feng as if he were examining a useless son in law.
“Hmph. Even if you can find food in the wild, so what? You are still so useless that you cannot even find a stable job. What makes you think you are worthy of my Meimei?” the old man grumbled as he glared at Yun Feng.
The old man’s name was Xiao Qiong. He was Xiao Mei’s father and was not someone who was easily satisfied. His mouth was sharp and blunt. He had once been a strong farmer who seemed content with life.
But that changed when he began seeing the world from the perspective of people in a higher social position. He changed….
He wanted Yun Feng to strive for more. It was not that he wanted Yun Feng to dominate the world or become some great figure, but at the very least he wanted Yun Feng to have a stable position, something that would give him the backbone to face others confidently.
It was not that the old man was greedy for himself or anything like that. In his eyes, he simply wanted the best for his daughter, without making her sad.
He knew very well that since their wealth had increased due to the compensation from Ximen Hao, their social circle would inevitably change whether he liked it or not. It was no longer the same social circle of farmers from their old hometown.
Besides, their home had been in Vermilion Bird Province, not here in Azure River Province. This change, sooner or later, would be forced upon them by society itself.
So… before that time arrived, he wanted this useless son in law of his to find some kind of backing and stand tall in society, so that his daughter would not be looked down upon by others.
“Father, please do not worry. Brother Feng has just finished recuperating after regaining his right arm. He will not let you down. Trust me,” Xiao Mei said as she tried to placate her grumbling father.
“Hmph. I hope so!” the old man snorted before walking back into the main house, accompanied by a few servants.
Yun Feng watched his father in law leave and could not help letting out a tired sigh. He had never thought that after everything he had been through, and finally reaching the point where he believed he could rest and live a peaceful life with the person he loved, he would face a completely new kind of problem.
It was the kind of problem he could not simply punch away like he had done with the many cultivators who once came after him.
Seeing that her father had already entered the main building, Xiao Mei finally let out a small sigh before smiling at her childhood sweetheart. She walked up to him and gently wiped the dust and grime from the hunt off his face.
“Please do not mind him, Brother Feng. He just wants the best for me, and that is why he pressures you. I apologize on behalf of my father,” she said softly with an understanding smile.
“No, it is fine. You do not need to apologize. He is right. As a husband, I should be the one who provides for you and supports you. I should be the one who makes you feel secure,” Yun Feng said with understanding.
If this had happened before the incident at the Ximen estate in Thousand Treasure City, he would not have understood it. But after that day, it felt as if he had lost his direction and his drive to keep striving forward. In the end, he had a long talk with both Brother Wei and Ximen Hao.
Because of that conversation, he had come to understand many things, including the treasure like mindset called critical thinking. Brother Wei had taught him how to think calmly, grasp the main point quickly, and analyze it properly.
He no longer rushed forward like a blind bull filled with fury and arrogant pride, believing he could challenge the entire world with his meager strength.
A wise person needed to analyze things from many perspectives instead of charging forward like the hot blooded fool he used to be.
“Meimei, Brother Wei’s engagement with Lady Mo is next week, right?” Yun Feng asked.
He was not sure about the exact date. He only knew it was sometime next week.
Since his arm had recovered thanks to the limb regeneration pill from Brother Wei, he would definitely attend the event as a witness.
“Yes, it is next Sunday. I heard that many renowned and influential people will attend. I only hope Brother Wei’s engagement will not attract unwanted attention and that no one will go there to cause trouble,” Xiao Mei said.
“Ha. Let them come! If anyone dares to cause trouble, they will have to ask permission from my blade first!” Yun Feng declared confidently.
“Ha.” Xiao Mei sighed. “Brother Feng, do you think someone who dares to cause trouble at the engagement ceremony of a Void Refining Realm expert is someone you can deal with?”
Hearing his girlfriend’s words, Yun Feng paused as realization struck him.
“You are right,” Yun Feng admitted with a slightly downcast tone. He had forgotten himself for a moment. It seemed that his hotheaded nature had not changed completely.
“My lord and lady, a courier package has arrived!” One of the servants hurried toward them and presented a package.
Yun Feng took the package from the servant while Xiao Mei helped him tear it open to see what was inside.
The package contained two things, a letter and a long payment bill.
Yun Feng read the letter. After a brief moment, his face darkened. His hand tightened around the paper as if it had personally offended him.
“Ximen Hao!” Yun Feng cursed the name.
Xiao Mei quickly took the letter and read it herself. It was indeed a letter from Ximen Hao. It contained many polite and pleasant words along with hopeful sentiments.
But all of that was merely a disguise for its true purpose.
In the end, it was nothing more than a debt collection letter. It stated that the cost for hiring additional people to witness the humiliation should be borne by Yun Feng, since he had been the one who demanded a hundredfold repayment. Therefore, the extra expense should naturally be paid by him.
Ximen Hao even added a taunting remark, saying that he hoped Yun Feng would not use the compensation money to pay the bill. If Yun Feng did that, he would truly look down on him. He hoped Yun Feng would use his own money to settle the debt.
He also added that if Yun Feng could not afford it, he would understand and would not mind if Yun Feng used the compensation money after all. It was just that he did not believe a prideful man like Yun Feng would stoop to such a level.
In short, the letter was essentially saying: pay the debt quickly, and don’t you dare use my money to pay me back. Use your own damn money. Otherwise, you are a loser.
Xiao Mei smiled wryly. It seemed that reconciliation between her lover and her former boss would take a very long time.
— Meanwhile – Underworld —
Inside Youqi’s office, the only sound accompanying her in the silent room was the steady tapping of a keyboard. The sound of the door opening slowly broke her concentration.
There were only two people in the underworld who would open her door without knocking. It was either her second sister, Yan Rongjun, or her little one.
“Fourth Mama~”
The familiar, cheerful voice of her little one rang out as the girl skipped through the door carrying a large wooden box. A cold aura seeped from the box, and faint frost clung to its surface. It seemed to contain something that required low temperatures.
“Yes? What have you brought me this time, you little glutton?” Youqi asked gently, her voice full of love and affection.
The little girl placed the box on the desk and opened it. Inside was a white, creamy dessert that looked soft and cold.
“This thing is called ice cream! Chenchen gave it to me! Mama should try it!” the little one said proudly as she introduced the treat.
“Oh? Is this your share? Or did you already eat yours and give me my portion so that you could have more?” Youqi asked knowingly as she paused her work.
“Ehehe.”
The little girl laughed awkwardly, then quickly changed the subject.
“Fourth Mama! Do you know that Chenchen will have an engagement ceremony soon? So let’s surprise him! It should be fun!” the naughty little girl said before leaning closer and whispering her plan into her fourth mama’s ear.
After hearing the little girl’s plan, Youqi could not help but smile as she began looking forward to it.
This should be fun…
