Chapter 142: Stranger in the Apartment
JASMINE’S POV
Louis messed around with the lock for several moments then finally there was a sound of something clicking in the lock and the door opened.
We slowly entered the apartment and closed the door behind us. It was slightly dark due to the closed curtains.
We walked into the lounge the first room facing the door.
“It smells dusty,” I said as brought myhabd to a table and rubbed my finger across it collecting dirt. How many months had this place been left unkempt?
“Maybe no one lives here after all,” Louis said.
“Still odd for the landlord to leave it in such a state,” I commented.
“Maybe he’s got money to burn,” he replied.
“In any case, if the house hasn’t been touched in a long time, it increases our odds of finding something that Diana may have left behind.”
I began checking the lounge. I looked under the furniture
“I’ll go to the kitchen and start looking there,” Louis said as he walked further into the apartment.
I opened the drawers in the lounge trying to find anything but they were empty. Having found nothing I moved away and walked further away
“I’ll check the bedroom I told Louis who was opening drawers in the kitchen search it.
“Sure,” he replied.
I entered the first bedroom in the hallway upon opening the door I found countless drawers that were open. My eyes narrowed curiously as I looked at them.
Suddenly, I heard movement coming from the room across the one I was in. I wondered if something had fallen over.
I made
“Ah!” I screamed in surprise as a person wearing a hooded mask pounced on me. They tried to punch me but I managed to dodge however in the process I list my balance and began to fall. I landed hard on the floor a few feet away from him. I looked up at the person as they looked down at me they held a folder in their arms, papers sticking out of it.
“Jasmine!” I heard Louis shout for me. The person gave me one last look and ran out the room.
“Be careful Louis, there’s someone in the apartment he’s holding something!” I ran to follow the person
I bumped into Louis in the hallway. “Are you okay?” he asked me.
“Yes, but they’re getting away with something!” I said as I followed the person who was already in the lounge. They opened the door and left the apartment.
I ran to the door and saw them headed for the stairs.
“I’ll try catch them,” Louis said as he ran past me. I knew Louis was faster than me so I let him go ahead and I remained.
The person flew down the stairs quite literally and Louis did the same. Looking over the railing I them run past the children playing football.
I turned away from then noticed something on the floor as I made my way back to the apartment. It was two sheets of paper. It must have fallen out of the folder the person was holding. I picked the and read them. It was a bunch of numbers all over the paper. It looked kind if like an accounting paper.
Holding onto the papers I re-entered the apartment and to the bedroom the person had been in. All the drawers and the closet were wide open. They were completely empty. I check only other remaining bedroom, and it’s drawers were cleaned out too.
I pieced together what they had been doing. I then exited the apartment once more and over the hallway balcony to see if I could see Louis from where I was.
“Fuck,” Louis said when he came up the stairs.
I knew the person had gotten away.
“Louis, are you okay?” I asked as I rushed toward him as he came up the stairs.
“Yeah,” but he got away. “Luckily, the bodyguards were already making their way back so I told them to
“All the drawers in the bedrooms were open. The person was a holding a folder full of papers there’s two them that they dropped that I found.”
“Seems like someone knew we were coming and decided to clean up the place,” Louis said as his eyes narrowed looking at the papers I presented to him.
The thought was unsettling that we were being watched. However, it was the only conclusion we could come too.
We then returned to the apartment together. Louis looked around the apartment double-checking the place.
“Who are you people!?” we then heard a female voice suddenly ask. Louis and I I turned towards the entrance of the apartment and found a woman standing in the doorway.
“God! Who are you?” I asked her in surprise.
“What do you mean who are you? I live on this block!” the elderely woman yelled.
“I’m going to call the cops on you because breaking into homes isn’t okay, I know you don’t live here.”
So she was the neighbor? No we need her to cooperate. My eyes darted around as I tried to come up with an excuse as why Louis and I were in the apartment to de-escalate the situation.
“Ma’am—” Louis started calmly.
But I spoke over him. “—Wait, we’re just looking for my sister,” I lied.
“Your sister?” she asked me.
“Yes. She’s been missing for a while now and no one in my family can reach her. She used to live here about two years ago so I wondered if she came back here. When we arrived we tried knocking at your door but you weren’t there which is why we ended up breaking in.” I explained to her.
Slowly her face softened as the fear left her. I internally let out a sigh.
“Did you know her when she was here two years ago?” I then asked her.
She scoffed.
“Know her? You mean the blonde woman with a kid?” she asked as if disgusted by Diana.
“Yes,” I confirmed.
“Make no mistake I knew that she lived in the house but I barely ever saw the girl,” she commented.
“What do you mean?” I asked her.
