Chapter 224 I’m not doing it for you
I scoffed internally in annoyance at his behaviour. I found his gentleness and concern for my injuries infuriating because it contradicted the fact that he was keeping me against my will. If you cared for me, you would let me go. As I worked, I noticed Keith would occasionally glance at me from . At first, I thought he was nervous about me possibly trying to run away, which I was thinking about. However, when I met his gaz,e an expression I couldn’t quite read was on his face. I worked for about two hours with him before he had to go for a meeting; he still had a schedule to follow after all. “I’ll be back soon,” he told me as he stood up from his desk and left his office.
Upon the office door closing behind him my eyes went immediately to the desktop at his desk. How I wished I could rush to it and try to contact Louis by sending him an email or something. I wanted to know how he was doing so badly.
My gaze turned away from his desk, and I looked at the five bodyguards that were in the room with me. They would simply carry me away if I tried to do that.
Five seemed a bit excessive, though. I thought to myself, considering the fact that I was also injured, but anyway. Keith was apparently paranoid. And he should be.
I looked through the files. The first thing I had taken note of was all the names involved in all the reports. Perhaps a pattern would form as I read through them. With the draft account documents on one side and the As I worked, I also took several breaks. Coffee breaks, bathroom breaks.
Keith returned about an hour later, but he had to do something else so it was just me working on the finance records. At lunch, we went to the cafeteria together and then returned to the office afterwards. “So, found anything so far?” He asked me at the end of the day as we prepared to return to his mansion.
“Nothing, so far, just made notes of things that might help as I go on,” I told him.
I requested that some of the documents be brought the his estate so I could continue looking through them.
“I can have copies of all the documents sent to the estate, and you can look through them from there,” Keith told me.
“Oh god no, Keith,” I refused. “I don’t want to be at that house all day, every day. I feel trapped enough already,” I told him.
His gaze was serious as he maintained eye contact. After a moment, an expression that I suppose resembled guilt appeared. My eyes narrowed as I glared at him. Clearly, he wasn’t guilty enough if he wouldn’t let me go.
When we returned to his new estate that evening, Keith, another wave of memories entered my mind. It felt so weird coming back from work in this strange mansion. It made me recall all the times I would come back from work with Louis. I would greet Tony and spend a little time with him. “Jasmine…” Keith said my name.
Brought out of my thoughts, I stopped and looked at him. I realised he had been saying something to me bout I wasn’t even listening. “What?” I asked him.
“I’ll see you at dinner in a bit,” he told me.
A frown was on my face as I looked at him.
An hour later, we were sitting at dinner in one of the dining rooms in the mansion together. My fork twiddled around with the food. Oh, how I wished he had a late-night meeting or event to attend to so I wouldn’t have to be with him.
“You’re not eating much,” he commented.
“I’m not that hungry,” I told him.
“You didn’t eat much at lunch either,” he told me. I recalled that I mostly drank coffee today and picked at my food at lunch. The stress of finding Tony was affecting me more and more. How could I eat when I didn’t know where he was or how he was? It was all too much.
“Jasmine, you have to eat. If you want to heal, if you want to be able to look through the documents. You have to eat,” he told me.
I hated to admit but he was right. I had to get better. If I wanted to find Tony I had to get better. I stabbed one of the potatoes on my plate and forced it into my mouth.
“Thank you,” he said to me in relief.
“I’m not doing it for you. I’m doing it for Tony,” I told him. A silence ensued between us for the rest of dinner. Keith finished eating before me and stood up from the table.
“We’ll continue in my office on Thursday, Jasmine,” he said to me.
“Why not tomorrow?” I asked him why we couldn’t continue as normal.
“I’m going to the Acland estate in the morning, my father is passing by to check the state it’s in after the fire,” Keith informed me.
“He hadn’t come before?” I asked in confusion. He should have been there the day it happened, if not within the first three days of the fire?
“He was out of the country when it happened,” he explained.
“Let me come with you,” I asked him. “Jasmine, we’ve already discussed this. With the estate in ruins, the debris from the damaged areas could fall and land on your injuries. I cant’ risk it,” He told me.
“Keith, you’re having me watched by like 15 different bodyguards. I should be fine,” I reminded him in exaggeration.
Let me see the damage, it might just help. Something might come to mind. What if I recognise sas omething that Diana left behind that could be useful to the case?
His jaw tightened as he stared at me. “Fine,” he finally agreed.
“Oh, and Keith,” I said before he could walk out of the dining room. He turned back and looked at me.
“Has Louis tried to contact me?” I asked him wondering if he would be honest with me.
His jaw tightened as he looked at me. “He has,” he replied, stiffly refusing to look at me.
“And? What did he say?” I asked annoyed by the lack of details.
“I handled it,” he told me nonchalantly.
