Chapter 255: A new angle
“Jasmine, you should be asleep,” he commented as he approached the seating area.
“Keith, none of us can sleep in this situation,” I told him the reality. His lips pressed together nervously.
“But I think I got it! I found a document that matches the drafts, ” I told him excitedly.
His expression completely changed. “What?!” He said, taken aback by this revelation.
“What did you find?” He asked me. I showed him the documents that matched the draft and then explained all the numbers to him.
“Oh my god,” he said. “This document is from five years ago, right? He confirmed as he read through it. “I don’t recall noticing anything strange at the time, but this is quite telling.”
“Will you be able to confirm if 3 million dollars is actually missing?” I then asked him.
“Now that I actually know where to look for the discrepancy in the finances. I’ll get all the receipts and invoices for the miscellaneous expenses and then add them up to see the actual amount spent. We’ll know for certain if something has occurred, and we can compare them with this. I’ll add up all the expenses and see what it amounts to,” he told me.
“Alright, I’ll help you with that,” I said to him, offering to come help him.
Kieth then paused as he looked at me. “Jasmine, you’ve done a good job, but you need to rest. You look so spent,” he told me in a concerned voice.
“And so do you,” I replied. He also had dark circles under his eyes. Though I hated him, I was worried for him as well. “You also have to rest.”
“I’ll get some rest as soon as I’m done with this,” he said. “As for you, rest as I handle this right now,” he told me.
“Alright,” I agreed, and then moments later, he left my bedroom.
I received a sleeping pill from one of the bodyguards outside my room. I then reluctantly got into my sheets. I really didn’t want to go to bed, but I suppose I had to. After a while of waiting for the pill to take effect my eyes finally managed to close.
When I woke up several hours later feeling more rested but still tired. Several nights of sleeplessness weren’t going to be resolved in one session. The sun shone through the windows of my room; I could tell it was still morning. I checked the time on my phone and saw it was 10 am. Had Keith already gone to work, I wondered?
I left the room and asked the bodyguards where Keith was. They said he was still in the mansion and at his office. They took me to his office.
“Jasmine, you’re here. Did you rest well?” He asked me.
“Yes,” I replied as I went towards his desk. “Found anything?” I asked him.
“So I requested all receipts of all expenses paid in the 4 million dollar miscellaneous expenses of this project, and I’ve been adding it all up all morning. I found the invoices and receipts actually only add up to 1 million,” he answered.
My eyes widened.
“The draft does in fact match the actual numbers I calculated. 3 million was stolen in this project,’ he finished off.
“Oh my god, finally,” I said as a wave of relief came over me. We had finally found evidence that the Acland funds were being stolen. After almost two and half weeks of nonstop constant document inspections, we had finally found something and made a break in the investigation.
“Now I’m wondering how long this has been going on?” he asked himself. ” I only noticed something strange recently.”
“mmhmm,” I said in agreement. Keith had already been appointed Chairman five years ago.
“Now,” Keith continued, “I’m going to go through the recent financial documents. I had initially suspected something strange was happening. Now that I know where to specifically look, I will check the receipts and invoices to see if the amount spent matches the to see if the pattern remains the same we’ll have our answer.”
“Are you going to the HQ today?” I asked him curiously.
“No, I want to finish with this right now so we can track down who is responsible,” he told me. “I want to finish checking all the documents.”
My eyebrows raised in surprise as I looked at Keith, who looked just as tired and spent as me.
“I think you should rest now,” I told him.
” I know, but–”
“–Please…you promised,” I cut him off gently and slowly drew closer. “I can continue checking the documents as you rest. I can do it.” I assured him. I had already found the first clue I could continue working.
His blue eyes softened as they searched my eyes. He brought his arm to the back of his head and awkwardly rubbed it.
“Okay,” he finally agreed.
“Good,” I said, glad he was listening to me. I wanted to come across as caring and concerned as possible.
He showed me which documents he was going through, and so I knew what to do.
“There are some invoices and receipts that will be coming in soon, so you can verify the budget,” he told me.
After some moments, some bodyguards entered the room and delivered the documents I would be checking as he rested.
I expected Keith to leave the office, but instead I watched him walk to the seating area and lie down on a couch. He gave a wave of his hand to the two bodyguards who were still in the office, and they went to stand near the door.
“What are you doing?” I asked him.
“I’m going to rest,” he told me.
“In here?”
“Yes,” he replied as he closed his eyes.
My eyes narrowed as I watched him and then at the bodyguards by the door. That told me all I needed to know. He trusted me enough to listen to me and rest, but he wasn’t going to leave me alone in his office.
