Chapter 1837: 24.98 Sixth Violet Star – Reward and Punishment
Border land between the human territory and the barren land.
A few days ago, a small group of soldiers and assassins returned to the border land carrying a few corpses with them. The commander stationed at the border land frowned at this scene. Some of these soldiers who had returned were from his barracks as well.
A soldier at the watch tower reported, “Report! There is a small group coming out from the barren land. I repeat, there is a small group coming out from the barren land.”
The commander who was overlooking the horizons of the barren land commanded, “Let them in and bring them to my office. As for the ones they are bringing, give them a respectful burial.”
“Yes, sir!” The soldier saluted.
Even though they didn’t know who was covered in that black cloth with their race’s crest, all soldiers considered each other as brothers and sisters. They’ve joined the mission to enter the barren land for the future of their race. It won’t be surprising that there would be death during the mission. Especially for dangerous missions like going into the land of the beasts.
Into the commander’s office…
Upon the arrival of the soldiers and assassins who returned from the barren land. Most of them were tired and covered in wounds. There are also obvious traces of dehydration which shows how dangerous their way back is.
The commander let them rest for a bit and only then did he ask a question.
He asked, “What happened?”
The group looked at each other and the one who received the letter had passed it to the commander. Though it got a bit crumpled along the way, this is the legit letter the old marshal had asked them to pass to this commander. The commander accepted the letter and saw the Long Clan’s crest on it. He immediately knew that this was written by the old marshal.
He opened the letter and started reading the contents. His expressionless face was calm until he frowned and glanced at everyone and then resumed his neutral stern face. After putting down the letter, the group were nervous, especially the ones who broke the law.
Cough!
“I will approve what the old leader had promised you. I’m sure the old leader had passed the egg incubator with you. Give it to me and I shall split it accordingly,” The commander said.
After the egg incubator was passed to him, he pulled out all the eggs inside. The number of eggs is enough as promised. Those who broke the rules will receive only one bronze ranked egg. Those who chose to return and escorted their comrade’s body back to their lands were compensated with two bronze eggs. Each of them was given a portable and disposable egg incubator in which they had placed the eggs.
After the eggs were distributed almost everyone was smiling. As with these eggs in their possessions, the possibility of them increasing theirs or their families strength could raise one’s standing above an ordinary human. No one wanted to be a mass produced individual among the rest.
Seeing them all smiling, the jolly scene was broken by the commander in front of them.
He said, “Alright. Since the rewards were given, this time will be your punishment. You know what I mean right as you know what you have done and the result of it. As well as how your choice has affected the mission.”
Once the commander said this, those who knew they had broken the rules and those who broke the creed they had promised when becoming soldiers were now having pale faces. There are no assassins in this group as those who broke the rules of the Pavilion Master were killed on the spot.
The commander started calling the names of those who had chosen to back off from the mission because of fear of death. The soldiers that were called all stood up straight and were now looking at the commander with nervous expressions on their faces.
“What was the creed you have vowed when you become a soldier? Recite it for me!” Bellowed the commander.
The soldiers could only recite the creed they had vowed when they became soldiers. Within this creed includes the line ’To fear not my own death, but the death of my loved one, my land and our people.’ There were lots of soldiers standing who stuttered at this line and seeing the look of the commander in front of them as well as the other soldiers in the room, made them feel embarrassed and lowered their heads.
The commander said, “I am not going to scold you beyond this! It’s just a broken vow that is hard to remain sacred. Once you get out of this office you will go to the resource department and get suspended. The duration will be a month. Within that means thinking seriously if you are able to stay true to your creed this time. I do not accept deserters in the group!”
“Yes, sir!”
They knew that this is the cue for them to leave the office leaving only the few soldiers inside the room more nervous as they noticed that when the first group had left, the soldiers inside the office had blocked all the escape route and they knew that they couldn’t avoid the punishment that would come next.
The eyes of the commander in front of them had turned murderous from coldness. The rest of the group trembles under this gaze.
The commander said, “The old leader is no longer young and thus, he treats your puny lives as precious as the rest of the soldiers. But I am not forgiving those who caused the death of their comrades, those who break the rules and those who scheme at others.”
“But… the old leader emphasizes that your lives shall be spared.”
“Sparing your lives is simple. However, do not think you can leave and return to your homes without receiving your punishment.”
“Leave one hand for each of you. The letter of your dismissal will be prepared as well. Your retirement fee will be processed in accordance with your merits. If there are no merits then all you can receive is a month’s salary, no more.”
The soldiers who came from the outside had to kneel before the commander begging to be spared. The other soldiers felt softhearted but only for a moment when they heard about their Commander’s words.
He said, “Pitying them? Do you not pity those who have died because of their foolishness? What would the family left behind of those brave soldiers would do now that their men died? Have you ever thought about what would happen if you were in their case?”
“The culprit of such tragedy is now in front of you. Their lives can be spared just for the face of the old marshal. But they cannot escape from the punishment.”
“Restrain them and do it!”
His soldiers collectively responded with bloodshot eyes, “Yes, Sir!”
From outside the office a few screams can be heard which startled the passing people along the hall. After a few minutes, the military doctors were summoned to treat these fools and were finally thrown out of the commander’s office with each of them missing one hand now wrapped in bandages.

Barren Land’s Inner Region
Evening. At the camp where the human beast masters are staying, the scout that was sent to watch over the vicinity of the camp came back badly wounded. Only had he lost an arm, even lost an eye. The moment the old marshal saw the scouts state he immediately realized that things tonight will not be simple.
Long Huang commanded, “Pack up! Pick up your weapons. Get ready to turn off the lights. Prepare to run. We will be under attack soon!”
“Yes, Sir!”
The people in the camp all made their move and the doctors stayed to heal the wounded one. Only when the scout had gained consciousness did he hurriedly look for the old marshal.
The scout said, “The old… marshal… find. Need to… report…”
Long Huang arrived beside the scout who was delirious and said, “I’m here.”
“S-Sir? The… monsters… in beast form… Blind until light… appears. No sense, only light… Dangerous… do not… get bitten…”
The scout took his last breath as the black line on his skin reached his heart and died on the spot.
The doctors said, “Sorry, Old Marshal. This black thing in his skin might be poison. It’s already too late as it has already reached his heart.”
“We did everything we could but…”
“To make an antidote for such a fast spread poison is impossible to be resolved on the spot.”
Everyone was silent and just as they were about to mourn about the dead scout, something unexpected had happened.
Long Huang said, “Someone… Cremate his body. We can only bring back in such a way.”
The soldiers and assassins in the area all felt sad and fearful at this moment. After all, this ending can become theirs if they don’t take good care of their safety and all. People were about to lift the corpse in order to cremate it. The man’s eyes’ suddenly opened revealing inhuman crimson eyes glaring at everyone. A voice that is not that of a human comes out from the scouts mouth.
Growls~
