- Chapter 259: Abyssal Tower

Fallen Sword Mountain Range.
From high above, the range stretched for hundreds of miles. The once-dense forest had now been reduced entirely to dead trees.
Pale beast skeletons were frozen among the deadwood as if time itself had stopped, with only bits of partly unrotted pelt clinging to their edges.
A few crows flew over the mountains, and midflight their bodies suddenly shuddered, as if they had lost their balance.
Then black feathers began to fall from the sky. Where the feathers fell away, exposed flesh started to bleed and rot.
The crows staggered and plunged toward the ground.
Layer after layer of flesh peeled away, revealing small, translucent ribcages and still-beating, delicate hearts.
The hearts kept beating.
The wind rushed past the birds, fleeing.
When the heartbeat ceased, the birds’ brief lives were sealed.
In the end, what fell into the mountain was only a tiny skeleton.
Crunch.
A shoe crushed the crow skeleton, then another shoe, and another.
Several cultivators in Lingxiao Temple daoist robes walked through the forest. From appearance they varied in age, and each of them was surrounded by surging spiritual energy to resist the corrupting demonic aura of the mountains.
One cultivator halted. He glanced at a nearby tree.
Leaves that had once been green and lush withered at a speed visible to the naked eye.
At the center of the forest, a Great Demon’s Egg was absorbing the life force of every living thing in the Fallen Sword Mountain Range to nourish its incubation.
White Pivot Elder Li Haoran and Supreme Imperial Law Elder Meng Shaoyuan’s assessment was correct.
They had to attempt to destroy this demon egg as soon as possible. If they delayed and this so-called Immortal Ascending Great Demon were to actually hatch, then everything would be too late.
At present, any cultivator below the upper three realms could not approach the mountain’s center even a single step without perishing.
That meant the Lingxiao Temple cultivators walking from the forest’s outskirts toward the deadwood center were all of Dao Union realm or above.
A Unity realm cultivator could fly a hundred miles with a single thought.
Yet these upper-three-realm cultivators still walked on foot through the Fallen Sword Mountain Range.
For a Unity realm cultivator, merely resisting the demonic aura was already extremely taxing.
The closer they drew to the demon egg, the more severe the demonic corruption.
Above them, a bronze tower hundreds of zhang tall and over eighty zhang across hung in the sky, slowly rotating.
…
An immortal artifact, the Abyssal Tower.
Beneath this massive bronze tower sat a demon egg the size a burly man with ten hands could barely wrap his arms around.
A tall, solemn white-haired elder with sharp eyes walked slowly toward the egg. He stopped about five chi away, then reached out and attempted to touch the massive shell.
The spiritual energy coiling around his fingers dissipated as the distance to the egg closed. The instant his fingertips touched the egg, flesh began to separate and evaporate rapidly from his fingertips.
First the fingers, then the palm, the flesh kept receding up his wrist.
In the space of a single breath, the white-haired elder’s right hand had been reduced to white bone.
He frowned slightly and withdrew his arm.
Spiritual energy flowed toward his right hand. The exposed white bone below his wrist sprouted tendons and flesh at a visible rate.
After more than ten breaths, the white-haired elder’s right hand was perfectly restored.
His expression was grave.
“Meng Yu—how?” asked the cultivator in blue robes standing behind him.
“The recovery time has become slower. That means the demonic aura’s corrosiveness has strengthened…” Meng Shaoyuan, Lingxiao Temple’s Supreme Imperial Law Elder, said in a heavy tone.
The man behind him was Elder Yu Zhou, Supreme Pivot Elder of the Mirage Palace.
Three other Dao Union great powers stood several dozen zhang away from the demon egg. They all looked up at the brooding clouds.
Dark clouds gathered.
The Abyssal Tower rotated slowly, emitting endless oppressive pressure.
“We must act quickly,” said White Pivot Elder Bai Yuze of Lingxiao Temple, then sighed softly.
“If only Supreme Pivot Elder Li were here,” he added.
From the moment so much calamity occurred in the Fallen Sword Mountain Range and Li Haoran failed to appear, they all understood that the elder who had led Kongshan Sect for seven thousand years and spanned two eras was most likely gone.
Li Haoran, who had lived in the same era as the last Immortal Ascension cultivator Su Hongzhen on Chenping Continent, had once been someone the Dao Union cultivators of the other great sects looked up to.
Now, the last five Dao Union cultivators left on Chenping Continent had readied themselves for a final stand.
Gu Jiancheng, Supreme Pivot Elder of Star Heaven Sect and a Dao Union great power, slowly raised his head and stared into the stormy sky.
“Disperse!”
Gu Jiancheng roared, and the heavy, repressive clouds vanished in an instant, revealing blue sky and bright sunlight.
Sunlight poured down over the deadwood forest corrupted by demonic aura.
“It is the hour of Shen. Begin.” Jiang Chao, Supreme Pivot Elder of Wind Ravine Valley, declared.
The five Dao Union great powers positioned themselves around the demon egg and sat cross-legged at five cardinal points.
Through the residue of their Myriad Transformations merging into Unity, each of them used the sliver of their true-born spirit essence to establish a link with the bronze tower suspended in the sky.
As these Dao Union cultivators initiated the connection, the Abyssal Tower’s rotation slowed and at last stopped.
The bronze tower began to descend slowly toward the demon egg beneath it. Mysterious auras leaked from its body, fracturing the surrounding space.
It emanated remnants of immortal Dao.
Dormant for tens of thousands of years after Heavenly Summit Mountain’s fall, the Abyssal Tower still contained traces of immortal Dao from long ago.
After several breaths, the tower sank only a few zhang toward the ground.
Even so, the earth began to tremble.
The tower’s descent accelerated. Friction between the immortal Dao remnants and the world’s spiritual energy made the bottom of the great bronze tower glow a deep red, as if seared by intense flame.
Suppression!
The bronze tower fell toward the enormous demon egg on the ground.
All the demonic aura it released dissipated. When the Abyssal Tower slammed into the egg, the entire Northern Region of Chenping Continent grew clear and bright for a fleeting instant.
Then a harsh, grating metallic screech rang out from within the Abyssal Tower.
