Chapter 27
Actually, I came out early because I thought that another obstacle would stick to me the moment I turned around. I left the closed door behind and stood in the hallway, looking at Aaron.
“Still, one letter a week is too much,” I whined at him.
Aaron just scratched his head and smiled at me.
I slumped and walked like a defeated soldier.
’This won’t do, I should take a nap.’
“Why don’t you write him a short letter? I heard from my colleague that he would send me one.”
“Colleague?”
“Yeah, well, these are guys whose main focus is working hard rather than writing.”
Now that I thought about it, I seemed to have faintly heard the sound of their training.
“How can I write something short but still good? Heoong, learning to write is already difficult for me.”
“Young Lady is very intelligent so you’ll learn it quickly. I have no doubt that you’ll be able to learn it in just a few days.”
“I can never do that…”
“It may be difficult, but I think that learning how to write letters will help you a lot to practice your handwriting. But still, I was really surprised.”
“Huh? Why are you surprised?” I stopped and looked up at Aaron.
“It’s the first time I’ve seen the Master so relaxed. I don’t know how to explain it… it’s just that he seemed more like a human now. It was difficult to face him before.”
This big Aaron was afraid of my father. Unlike me, who only encountered one side of him, Aaron must’ve experienced the tyrannical side, so I somehow thought that he knew my father better.
“Uhm, is Dad that scary person?”
“He was ruthless. He wasn’t like that in the first place, but… it was true.” Aaron suddenly hardened his face and bowed to me.
“No—oh?”
The appearance of green hair was caught in my peripheral vision as I shook my head. As if it was my instinct, I clung to the hallway window.
‘It’s Hilla.’
Hilla was heading towards the small forest he had disappeared to the other day, his hair neatly tied. As the fairy said, it was clear that he had something to do with the secret place. He wouldn’t continue going back to the small forest if it wasn’t for that.
I smiled and turned my head to Aaron. “Aaron.”
“Yes, miss.”
“I want to play outside.”
Aaron then smiled. “Do you mean you shouldn’t be disturbed?”
“Heehee~”
“Instead, don’t go too far. I will stay nearby so as not to bother you.”
“Uh-huh, I’ll just play in front.” I left Aaron and quickly ran towards the front door.
‘I shouldn’t lose Hilla.’
I opened the large door with a whimper and jumped out. I ran towards the forest where Hilla disappeared without even thinking of calling Kuhn.
Hilla didn’t disappear as quickly as I expected. A few minutes passed before I heard a rustle behind me.
[Mariette.]
“Oh, that’s a surprise. Is that you, Kuhn?”
[You didn’t even call me, what are you doing here?] Kuhn grunted as if he was sad and approached me.
“Sorry, I forgot to call you because I was following Hilla in a hurry when I saw him going this way. But where have you been?”
Kuhn raised his head to the sky. [I was patrolling the area because you didn’t show up. I thought you were taking a nap.]
“Thank you. I think Hilla went there. If he suddenly disappeared there, that would mean that he used the same space as me, right?”
[Yes.]
“The fairy said his master would come here to give him an item.”
[Yeah, so?]
“How many people in this mansion have such mysterious objects?”
His divine power had an excellent ability to heal someone, but it didn’t have this kind of special ability. So it was very likely to be a witch’s item.
[If there is none at all, maybe one or two…?]
“Then, is it possible that there is no other person other than Hilla who can make a potion and possess a mysterious object?”
[…None.]
“Right? This just made clear that Hilla had some sort of connection with witches. Wouldn’t it be easier for us to get Hilla on our side if we launched a surprise attack on the scene right away and prevented him from running away? What do you think? That would be alright, right?”
I pointed to a place. It just looked like a simple patch of grass, but it was a passable hiding place.
[It’s not that bad… Then should I step back?] Kuhn stepped behind me and sat down with his feet together.
“Ugh, no. For now, let’s pretend we’re playing here. When Hilla comes out of that space, let’s attack.”
[You’re pretty smart.]
I rubbed his nose with my index finger at his praise. I played around with his fur and touched his paws while Hilla wasn’t visible. Kuhn took a step back every time I put my hand on his forefoot.
[Not my feet.]
“Why? It’s soft.”
[I mean, it’s ticklish. I’d rather you scratch my chin.]
I scratched his chin with my finger at his demand. Kuhn purred. It was loud enough to resonate in the quiet forest.
A long time passed until Hilla appeared out of nowhere as if he had teleported, and that’s when I lifted my head. I opened my eyes as widely as I could, trying to look very surprised. “…Huh?”
Making eye contact with me as soon as he came out, Hilla also had his eyes opened wide. “…Miss?”
I opened my mouth and pointed at Hilla. “Hilla appeared all of a sudden.”
Hilla’s brow furrowed.
* * *
“You saw it wrongly. I was behind the tree.”
“No, Hilla suddenly appeared. I saw it!”
I hugged Kuhn and ran after Hilla.
He was denying my words again and again as he ran away. “You must’ve been confused because you were playing with the cat for a long time. How am I supposed to pop out of thin air?”
“It’s true. Hilla suddenly popped out, how did you do that?”
Hilla suddenly stopped walking and turned around. “Because Miss saw it wrong.”
“No.”
“Isn’t it time for you to take a nap? The maids will be looking for you. Come, I will take you back.”
“I can’t sleep today. Hilla, teach me that too, please?”
Hilla ran away from me again without giving me an answer. I chased after him although my legs were hurting. As a result, I was able to safely break into his office. Hilla checked the surroundings, locked the door, then looked down at me.
I looked up at Hilla with innocent eyes while holding Kuhn. I just stood there with Kuhn’s front paws on my arms like a doll.
“Miss, I’ll tell you again, but you saw it wrong…”
I frowned as I watched him sweeping his bangs away. You won’t continue talking, is that it? Well, I have another way.
“I went in there too.”
“You… went in there too?”
“Yes, I did.”
Frowning Hilla suddenly burst out laughing, “Haha, you must have been dreaming.”
“What? No!”
“It is said that you will grow taller if you often have nonsense dreams, so isn’t it because Young Lady wants to grow taller?”
He looked down at me and tried to convince me to leave, saying that I should take a nap.
’Oh, so this is how it’s gonna be?’
I groaned as I struggled not to let him push me out. “Golden hair and golden eyes, am I right?”
Hilla dropped his act. His face eventually became a little stiffer than before. I think this was the first time I saw his stern face. It was a little scary but it was less scary than Dad, so I hugged Kuhn tightly and looked at him.
His gaze soon descended to me. He knelt down on one knee in front of me and looked into my eyes. “Miss.”
“Yes? Right? Was Hilla with the fairy? Is he crying again?”
Hilla, whose expression had changed subtly, asked. “When did you see him?”
“Uuuhm, a few days ago. I saw Hilla going to the forest so I followed you, but you suddenly disappeared and I accidentally found him. And…”
“Yes. And?”
“And I fell over and a crying boy suddenly appeared.”
“Is that everything?”
“Ugh, no. I wiped his tears away but he suddenly disappeared. Is that boy Hilla’s friend?” I asked, pretending not to know that Hilla was Arumia’s teacher.
“…No, Young Lady saw it wrong.” He continued to insist that I didn’t see it, but he couldn’t hide his trembling eyes.
“That’s a lie. Was that secret place made by Hilla? How did you make it? Teach me too.”
He bit his lips worriedly. “…Haa, how in the world,” he faintly murmured, but I clearly heard him.
’I have a pretty good sense of hearing too.’
“Is it magic?”
Hilla’s eyes in the glasses turned fierce in an instant. “Magic? Are you going to continue throwing tantrums about things that didn’t happen?”
“Throwing tantrums?”
“Yes. Young Lady is doing a bunch of crazy things right now. You stole medicine last time and turned the house upside down, and now you’re confused with your dream?”
“No, I really saw him. Just like a witch who used her magic—”
“Miss Mariette!” His voice was suddenly so loud.
I was so startled that I took a step back.
’You’re screaming at me now?’
“Young Lady is making a very dangerous remark. What do you mean magic? Witch?”
“…”
“You must not say these unspoken words in the sacred Ferze. These are things that shouldn’t exist.”
“Unspoken words?”
“Yes, unspoken words. I will get angry if you say them, so stop throwing tantrums and just forget about it. I will tell the Grand Duke about it if you keep on doing that.”
Hilla’s words as he opened the door were a perfect threat.
