“Well, I call dibs on you, Doc.” Kav rose and offered the doctor his arm. “I’ll walk you out.”
“Gallant as always, Kavner Fury. And that charm doesn’t fool me for a second.” The doctor smiled. “One day, some woman is going to knock you off kilter.”
Kav shook his head. “Hasn’t happened yet.”
“We’ll see.” The pair headed down the stairs.
Lola stepped forward. “I’m going to cook dinner. How about fajitas?”
“Lasagna,” Daisy said.
The older woman smiled. “Lasagna it is.”
“And garlic bread.” Daisy lifted her head.
“Okay,” Lola agreed.
“And homemade gelato.”
I smiled. The kid was a Fury, through and through. Give them an inch, and they took a mile.
“Only if you help me make it,” Lola said.
Daisy frowned and looked at me.
I tapped her nose. “Go on, gorgeous girl. I’ll be right there. I’m not going anywhere.”
She hesitated.
“I’ll be with her,” Colt told his daughter.
Daisy gripped my hand. “You saved me.”
“Oh, Daisy.” I cupped her cheeks. “I love you. I would do anything to keep you safe.”
“I love you too, Macy.” She hugged me hard, and I managed to hide my wince as she bumped some of my aching ribs.
I met Colt’s gaze. There was so much warmth in it.
“Go.” I tugged on Daisy’s hair. “I want lasagna and gelato now, too.”
Daisy hopped up and headed into the kitchen with Lola. His brothers and Boone were talking at the island.
“You love my daughter.”
I looked at him. “She’s easy to love. You’re raising a good kid. And you’re a hell of a dad.”
“I didn’t think I could do it. Single man, bounty hunter.”
I took his hand and gave it a squeeze. But he wasn’t done yet.
“And I’d fucked up with all the family I had.”
“Hardly, Colt. Life isn’t easy, and bad stuff happens. I might try to always look at the positive, but I know that things aren’t always neat, simple, or pretty. You’ve suffered and survived a lot.”
“Chrissy, my mom…”
“They made their choices. You did what you could. What happened to them wasnotyour fault.”
