Kingdom of Wolves - Page 99
The rest of the patrol has no issue, thankfully, and we getback to the packhouse in time for the late meal. Once I’ve eaten, I make my wayto my room and have a shower before climbing into bed.
My mind wanders and I can’t stop thinking about that scentthat Flint seems to have hanging on him when he comes. It’s Lavender andfreshly cut grass, but I’ve not scented it anywhere where I’ve been, I’m sure.It has to be in a pack or in the town because I would know that scent if it wasin the shifter council area.
Falling asleep with my mind buzzing and Phoenix whiningabout how he needs his mate leaves me dreaming of walking through a meadowsearching for someone, but every time I get near, they disappear.
The next morning, after breakfast, I head to the warrioroffice and check on the patrol warriors on duty today. Looking up whenEvangeline storms in, throws her hands on her hips, and scowls.
“What do you want?” Giving no sign of being polite towardher. I really dislike this female. She is nothing but trouble.
“Zoella, in the secretary’s office, told me that a requesthas been received by some bitch from the Blood Pearl Pack who wants to comehere and look for her mate. What do you know about that?”
“Nothing, and if I did, I wouldn’t speak to you about it,because it’s none of your business.” I turn my back on her and look up again asI hear footsteps approaching.
Thomas walks into the office, gives Evangeline a sneer, thenturns to me. “Are we covered for warriors today along the border with theEclipse Pack?”
“Yes, I’ve just checked, and we have warriors coveringeverywhere.” Hearing a cough to get our attention, I turn to Evangeline. “Youstill here? We have nothing to say to you. Now get out of here before I speakto the Beta about you being in offices you have no business being in.”
Giving off a loud screech, Evangeline storms out of theoffice and I can’t help the chuckle that escapes. Thomas shakes his head beforecommenting. “I wish her mate had taken her off to another pack. She is a painin everyone’s ass. Why doesn’t she have a job the same as the other females?”
“I don’t know, but if we get a chance, we need to mention itbecause if Alpha Connell is going to clean up the pack, he needs to show hemeans it.”
“Need to show that I mean what?” Rolling my eyes beforeturning and giving my attention to Alpha Connell and the Beta, I tip my head tothe side slightly in respect.
“Evangeline has been in here demanding we tell her who hascontacted us from the Blood Pearl Pack and why. Now your secretary, Zoella, needs to be told that your business stays in the office and not be mouthed toall and sundry.” In for a penny, I’m thinking, so continue. “If you want thepack to look up to you with respect, you need to clear out or clean up the bad, which is Evangeline, Bellamy, and Jackson. I realize they were your friends fora long time, but they won’t earn you respect from the pack or other packs.”
Alpha Connell looks from me to Thomas and back again.Nodding his head before speaking. “I’ve already removed all three from my innercircle. I want to place Bellamy and Jackson under you, Thomas, to train up forborder patrol warriors. If they don’t make it as warriors, they will have to beplaced in a lesser position.” Walking back to the door, Alpha Connell smirks.“Evangeline can work in the kitchen, and I’m sure Dahlia will find hersomething to do.”
I look at Thomas, and he grins. “I can’t wait to get thosetwo under my orders,” Rubbing his hands together in excitement. “Oh, yeah, thisis going to be fun.”
“ZOELLA! MY OFFICE NOW!”
I look at Thomas and he looks at me and we both grin, knowing she’s going to be in trouble for talking about the Alpha’s businesswithout permission.
Finishing in the warrior office, I head outside to check thetraining session that is in progress. Iona is taking a few of the pack femalesthrough attacking sequences. Speaking to some of the females, they told us theyget confidence from each other, and with that in mind, Iona devised ways theycould act together to take down an opponent.
Standing on the edge of the training ground, my eyes flowover the fighting and notice movement along the side of the area, just withinthe tree line. I quickly make my way over, allowing Phoenix to rise, and usinghis senses, I follow the figure into the forest.
‘Thomas, come to the east side of the training area. We havean intruder.’ I mind link as I’m walking carefully through the forest, following the scent of a shifter with a sour essence.
Shifting, I pick up speed and follow the scent, but it’smoving away fast, which tells me they are running for the border. ‘Thomas, contact the border warrior. Whoever this is they’re heading for no-man’s-land.’
Seeing the shifter, Phoenix picks up speed and lunges, taking him down, but instead of fighting, he rolls over and shows his belly andneck. Submitting fully and giving us the choice as to letting him live orripping his throat out.
Shifting, I stand over the wolf and command ‘Shift’.
The wolf shifts into a male. Not a large male, one thatlooks like he’s not eaten in a long time.
“Why are you in our territory?” The shifter shivers withfear and the stink of that fear burns my nose.
“I was told if I came here, I would be given food andshelter inside the territory. But when I got here, the male wasn’t where hetold me he would be.” Throwing himself onto his knees, he looks up at me.“Please don’t kill me. Let me leave and I’ll never come back.”
“Who was the male who told you to come here? Why would heoffer you that? What did he want from you in return?” Thomas appears, which hasthe male cowering more, but I hold my hand out to tell Thomas to wait.
“The male was called Bellamy, and he wanted to know who wasruling over no-man’s-land, and wanted a meeting with the leader. I don’t knowthe leader, but I arranged a meeting. I don’t know if that happened, but I camefor the safety I was promised until he didn’t turn up as agreed.”
“Come, let’s get you to the packhouse. We’ll get yousomething to eat and drink and you can have a bath or shower. Thomas, come withus and we’ll need to find fresh clothes for him.” Looking at the male, whostill stinks of fear. “What’s your name?”
“Brian Fellows.”
