Little Song Bird Is Pregnant - Chapter 96 - The Dwarven Elf

Chapter 96 – The Dwarven Elf
The chilling wind became too intense. Wren swiftly wrapped his shoulders with a huge blanket and hugged Feng tightly to his body.
"Can we make a fire here? Maybe we should," Wren whispered softly.
He was hidden in the corner of the road between two huge buildings. The cold draft was not so bad as outside.
He could make out small snowflakes fluttering down.
"My mum used to say our Mer rivers used to be cold and frigid as well a few thousand years ago. We used to move over to the Mer river whenever seasons became favorable. But in just a few thousand years something changed. The temperature became stable. So the southern clan separated and became a small clan of its own."
Feng poked his head out. "I know…it's because I moved in. It was too cold… so made the climate a bit hotter,"
Wren blinked. It all made sense now. Feng was a fire-born bird and his overwhelming fire energy must have made it degrees hotter.
"That's nice. I was born right about that time…,"
"I know," Feng smirked. "Who knows? It was fate that we should meet this way," he whispered in his peppy bird voice.
Wren gently kissed his face. "Yeah, it was destiny,"
Suddenly, someone cleared their throat loudly.
Startled, Wren picked up his sword and was ready to slay anyone.
Instead of the burglars, he had expected, a short grouchy man stood there with a lamp. "I knew you would be in the streets," he moved the lamp closer to his face.
It was the dwarf man they had met in the bookstore named Alin.
"Ah, we couldn't find a place to stay. This is also not bad. We can cuddle up in these clothes," he gave him a warm smile.
Alin grumbled to himself. "Just come with me… I have some questions for you,"
Wren stood up, still wrapped in the spider silk. "You're not going to rob us or kill us, right?"
He clicked his tongue. "I don't care about your wealth… I just want to know.. something else,"
"What is it?"
"a book. There was a book on my counter…. did you touch it?"
Wren thought about it. In fact, he had seen a leather-bound book on his counter. He had touched it and even opened it. 'Shit did I leave some stains on it… or did I tear it…'
He was quite cautious about what to answer.
"Did you open it or not?"
"Are you going to punish me if I did?" Wren whispered ever so softly.
"No…. but did you…."
Wren nodded. "Yeah sorry, got curious…."
Suddenly the dwarf man's face lit up. "I knew it! I knew it….. he said someone bought it… it must have been you. Who else…." he jumped around in glee.
Wren just stood there, looking at him awkwardly.
Feng immediately popped his head out and whispered, "run..he's a weird person."
"he is… but he is not a bad one," Wren mumbled, standing still.
"Wren, listen to me. Just go.. I don't like this man…."
Alin stopped jumping and looked at Wren with his eyes filled with respect and hope. He bowed low. "Young master, I've finally found you. I got a letter that I will meet you soon but I didn't expect it to be so soon… please punish me for not recognizing you,"
This time both Wren and Feng were stunned still.
"w-what? I think you misunderstood. I'm not a master from a rich family.. I'm just a poor beast."
"Master with that spider silk you are not fooling anyone. Please follow me immediately. It's too dangerous out here. Please," the man respectfully bowed low again.
He was already short as his knees but after he bowed he became even smaller.
Wren did not know what to do. something in him told him that he can trust that fellow.
"Wren…" Feng softly bit his skin.
Wren was conflicted. "sir… I don't like to follow strangers home. It's okay. I don't feel that cold. I have a warm body warming me up," he whispered wiggling happily.
Feng bit his nipple. 'who told you to say that.. god it's embarrassing…"
Alin peered at the little bird. "ah a fire spirit bird, master. They are indeed very warm bodied but the harsh cold is not the only problem out here. Someone has already started tracking you. you need to get out of sight and hide for a while. Please trust me and follow me,"
Wren frowned. those words felt ominous. He did not feel anyone following him for a while now, but somehow there was a crushing feeling in his soul. He did not like it one bit.
It was the snow that made him feel that way..
He gently caressed Feng's head. "just this once. Let's trust my instincts. It has never been wrong,"
Feng reluctantly agreed.
Wren followed after Alin. He led them over to the book store which was very close by.
As soon as they got in the short man closed the store doors and latched it. "the room is upstairs, young master. I'll prepare some hot water for you." he ran around and lit up the fireplace that was covered in spider webs.
The man struggled a bit, starting the flint.
Feng sighed and breathe out a ball of flame.
The fireplace lit up, spreading warmth in the small store.
Alin hooked up a small barrel in the fireplace's hook and poured water in. "it will be warm in just a moment. Please rest in the room young master.. sorry if it's so messy. I… really didn't live a peaceful life…"
Wren did not completely understand his words or his concerns. He just walked upstairs to the small bedroom. There was a small area for cooking a bathtub and chamber pot.
It was very clean and neat compared to the shop below.
Wren sat in the beige-colored sheets and awkwardly pulled away from the silk coats. Outside it was freezing cold, but inside it was as warm as the tropical oceans. It was very weird.
He curiously inspected the room. There were few inscriptions on the walls. The spiritual vein of it felt very apparent, with just a touch.
This room was similar to a spiritual stone that had veins of energy passing through it. "weird… is the whole city made like this?"
It made him quite curious about the city as a whole.
He pulled out the worn-out book and started to read the contents.
The first chapter gave him an overview of the situation in Rene.
The city was in between three seas. It was a coastal port that connected to major cities and kingdoms and traded spices and magic treasures. it also had a few treasure troves buried around it. so it was a very popular spot for adventurers and explorers.
It became a hub that connected five major kingdoms. There were many languages spoken here… he did not even know half of them and what they were.
And finally, the chapter explained the cold winds.
It was said that the city was once cursed by a very powerful cultivator. The five families of Rene did their best to combat the curse, but they could not win against it. so instead of destroying the curse they altered it so that the chilling wind occurred only at night.
The five families funded the whole city and made the walls enchanted. It kept the inhabitants safe and sound.
"The five families…they must have spent a lot to protect this city,"
Feng popped out of his shirt and hopped onto the bed. He shifted back to his human form and laid his head on his lap. "Or they had to. This place is a marketing hub. It's smack in the middle of five kingdoms. Everyone has to travel through this place to get places. If the curses destroyed it, it would have been a huge loss to all the kingdoms. My guess, the families got support from the other kingdoms to enchant the houses."
Wren nodded. "It could be been possible." the book was published a thousand years ago, so some part of the history could have been altered to suit the reader's taste.
"Who do you think cursed this place?"
"Your father did," Alin said, standing by the door.
"m-my who? Father?….."
"yes your father. the spiritual king, our Almighty emperor. He was the one who cursed this place." the man came in and poured the hot water into the tub.
Wren vigilantly looked at him.
"Don't be alarmed. I am on your side. I am one of your father's followers. I might not look it but I'm a ten thousand years old dwarven elf. My kind is extinct.. I was saved by your old man," Alin smiled widely.
Wren's heart slightly shook at hearing this detail. He did not know how this small Elven man got to know of his identity or if he was telling the truth. he silently looked his way.
"The heavenly emperor cursed this place because of your mother. One of the five families, the Dukal family's young master, lusted after her. Our emperor got to know of it. He got slightly childish and cursed this place." Alin chuckled. "He might look all grown up, but he is a child at heart. If someone touches what is his, he will destroy even the skies…"
"I don't care about him," Wren casually whispered.
The small smile on his face disappeared. "he got to know of the betrayal quite late.. the Heavenly rain… it's his tears.. he wished to come running to you. The spiritual space is hard to cut through between the realms. He is stuck up there…"
"I said I don't care!" Wren shouted. "j-just leave me be…."
