Chapter 239: Chapter 238: Conditions for Use
Magic Energy Cannons are powerful, but not just anyone can use them.
First off, each Magic Energy Cannon corresponds to a specific type of Magic, such as Fire Dragon Devouring Heaven, Heart-Piercing Wave, or Water Dragon Roar.
This means the user’s Attribute must match the cannon’s Magic Attribute.
Take these two Fire Dragon Devouring Heaven Magic Energy Cannons, for instance. To fire them, a Fire Attribute Knight or Mage must infuse them with Fighting Qi or Magic Power.
Fire is fire, wind is wind, and water is water.
Second, the cost to fire these Magic Energy Cannons is immense.
A Peak Silver Knight at full strength can only fire a Sixth-level Fire Dragon Devouring Heaven Magic Energy Cannon three to five times.
A Peak Golden Knight at full strength can only fire a Seventh-level Heart-Piercing Wave Magic Energy Cannon two to three times.
As for Magic Crystal Stones, a single one contains nowhere near enough power for a Magic Energy Weapon of this caliber.
That is, unless there was a device that could gather the energy from a large number of Magic Crystal Stones and channel it into the cannon.
But for now, no such device exists.
Lurans picked up a nearby bow, drew the string, and let it go with a sharp TWANG.
“This is a Strong Bow. With ordinary arrows, its effective range is about a hundred meters.”
As he spoke, he picked up an arrow.
“But this isn’t an ordinary arrow. It’s inscribed with the Wind Attribute magic, Rapid Speed, which increases its effective range to three hundred meters. If you can manage a full draw on this bow, it can even reach four hundred.”
Ronin picked up an arrow in curiosity. The dark red shaft was etched with the familiar Magic Patterns for Rapid Speed.
“Aren’t Magic Patterns supposed to be drawn only on Magical Beast Hide? How can they be carved onto ordinary arrows?”
“Looks like you’ve become much more studious. I’m surprised you know so much about Magic Patterns.”
Lurans said, then understanding dawned on him.
’Wubei Territory has a Light Attribute Mage who can create Healing Spell Scrolls, so of course Ronin would be familiar with this sort of thing.’
“These arrows must have been specially treated, but I’m not too familiar with the specific process.”
Lurans didn’t know everything. When it came to knowledge related to Magic, he’d only scratched the surface.
’I’ll have to check out the Magic Energy Chamber of Commerce when I have time,’ Ronin thought, ’or maybe visit Dean Miloslav at the Wushan Extraordinary Academy to ask about this.’
’Arrows with an effective range of three hundred meters, and their power certainly isn’t weak with the boost from the Rapid Speed magic.’
’A Wind Attribute Intermediate Knight could use them to damage Flying Magical Beasts.’
’If I can figure out how, I could make some for the knights in Wubei Territory and bolster the territory’s anti-air capabilities.’
’However, it seems the only Wind Attribute Intermediate Knights in the territory are Krami and Babulin. No one else would be able to use them.’
Ronin picked up another bow and drew it. ’An Intermediate Knight could probably only manage a half draw,’ he figured. ’It would take an Advanced Level Knight to draw it fully.’
’Arrows of this caliber should be fine against ordinary Flying Magical Beasts, but against a Giant Dragon like Carlos, they wouldn’t pose much of a threat unless they hit his vulnerable eyes.’
Next, Ronin turned his attention to the long spears set off to the side.
These weren’t meant to be wielded by Knights as weapons. They were similar to the Rapid Arrows, but required a specialized launcher to be fired.
And compared to the arrows, the Rapid Long Spears had greater range and more power!
To a Griffin, the Magic Energy Cannon posed the greatest threat, followed by the long spears, and finally the Rapid Arrows.
This was the answer Lurans had given Ronin.
“You have the Fire Attribute, as do some of your men. Take one of the Fire Dragon Devouring Heaven Magic Energy Cannons with you when you return to Wubei Territory. It will strengthen your domain’s defenses.”
In Lurans’s opinion, Wubei Territory was close to the Demon Beast Mountain Range. If a Flying Magical Beast were to attack the castle, Ronin would have a difficult time fending it off.
“This… isn’t this a bit too valuable?”
Ronin scratched his head, looking a little embarrassed.
The price of a Magic Energy Cannon was already higher than a Magic Scroll of the same Level, to say nothing of a high-level one like this.
A Fire Dragon Devouring Heaven Magic Scroll sold for Two Thousand Gold Coins, but this Magic Energy Cannon was priced at a whopping Hundred Thousand Gold Coins!
’Lurans’s gifts are getting more and more extravagant,’ Ronin thought.
“Ever since I bought it, this Magic Energy Cannon has only been used twice, during the battle for Mist City. It’s been gathering dust in Wushan Castle ever since. You might actually get some use out of it.”
Lurans said with a smile, “If something ever happens that threatens Wushan Castle, as the Viscount of Wubei Territory, you’re obligated to come help defend it. You can just bring it back with you then.”
Since Lurans put it that way, Ronin no longer refused.
“You’ve got a point, Grandfather!”
After a moment’s thought, he decided to store the cannon directly in his Space Ring to prevent outsiders from learning he possessed one.
Lurans’s eyebrows shot up as one of the Magic Energy Cannons vanished before his eyes.
“A Space Ring?”
He asked, a mix of shock and uncertainty in his voice, “Where did you get that?”
Ronin was a little surprised. “Grandfather, you know about Space Rings?”
“Of course I do.”
Lurans said, “I’ve not only heard of them, but I also know that His Majesty Bruno, Magic Master Silva, and a few of the Dukes possess them.”
“Not even Silva can create them. The ones they have are either heirlooms passed down through their families or artifacts recovered from ancient ruins.”
He looked at Ronin and asked curiously, “Where did you get yours?”
Ronin certainly wasn’t going to say he got it from a seven-day login bonus. Lurans would just ask what a ’seven-day login bonus’ was.
“There’s a ruin to the north of Wubei Territory as well.”
Ronin said, “I discovered this Space Ring there, along with a Contract Scroll.”
He leaned in and whispered, “There was also a Giant Dragon in that ruin. It’s now my Contracted Magical Beast.”
“Hahaha!”
Lurans roared with laughter. “You really know how to spin a tall tale!”
Creatures like Giant Dragons had always been the stuff of legend; no one had ever actually seen one.
And now his grandson was claiming not only to have seen one, but to have made it his Contracted Magical Beast. If that wasn’t a tall tale, what was?
Ronin spread his hands helplessly. “If you don’t believe me, I’ll summon it tonight and let you see for yourself.”
“Heh, I’ll be looking forward to that.”
On the surface, Lurans was skeptical, but inwardly he was muttering to himself. ’It doesn’t feel like Ronin is bluffing…’
’Could it actually be true?’
’No way…’
Ronin didn’t argue further. He’d just have to give his grandfather a little shock tonight.
’The old man is always as steady as a rock,’ Ronin mused. ’It’ll be fun to see the look on his face when he’s finally shocked.’
Ronin took another look at the array of weapons in the storeroom before accompanying Lurans out.
This visit had given him a new understanding of the world’s “anti-air systems.” He now knew that Carlos wasn’t invincible; besides Silver Moon Knights and Mages, other methods could pose a threat to him.
The damage from Magic Energy Arrows was limited and could be mostly disregarded, but the Magic Energy Long Spears and Magic Energy Cannons were another story. He had to be especially wary of the Heart-Piercing Wave Magic Energy Cannon. If Carlos were ever hit by one, he would be severely injured, powerful defenses notwithstanding.
Fortunately, a Magic Energy Cannon needed several seconds to gather energy before firing.
If one could spot the light it emitted while gathering energy in time, there was a chance to evade the attack.
“Brother!”
Just as they were leaving Wushan Fortress, an enthusiastic shout came from down the road. It was Bretton, waving eagerly.
“Looks like the kid’s back.”
Lurans said to Ronin with a smile, “Bretton’s got good talent. He successfully broke through and became an Intermediate Knight last month.”
Ronin was taken aback, then filled with admiration. “An Intermediate Knight at fourteen? His talent really is something special!”
