“…Huh. Wasn’t expecting myself to be placed that highly.”
“If you think about it, it’s kind of natural you’d be placed that high. After all, you did show off an attack at peak Rank 5 level while at the start of Rank 3.”
By the time the announcer was done going through the long list of participants that would move onto the third round, both Valyr and Ataraxia decided to leave the tournament for the meantime, maximizing the four-day break everyone was given.
Making their way out of the amphitheater, Ataraxia looked back at Valyr as the latter’s previous words lingered in his mind. “Did you expect yourself to be placed that low?”
“Honestly… I thought I would be placed even lower,” replied Valyr with a slight nod. “After all, I didn’t really show everything I could do during the fight against the beast.”
“You think the reason why they placed you so highly is because of your performance during the first round?” asked Ataraxia in return, which made the young man ponder over it for a bit.
“…Probably.” Valyr nodded once more as they entered one of the wider corridors within the amphitheater. “Would actually make sense for your placement to be that high if they also took that into consideration.”
Feeling like the two of them were talking for long enough after that, both Valyr and Ataraxia remained silent as they continued to make their way out of the amphitheater.
Unsurprisingly, with the reputation they had accumulated both inside and outside the tournament, a great number of people had tried to come up to them, hoping to recruit them into the organizations they represented.
However, before any of those people could come close to them, either Valyr or Ataraxia would flare out their auras in their entirety, leaving those people no choice but to give the two space as they arrived at the exit.
“Where do you plan on going?” Valyr asked Ataraxia, inwardly pondering whether or not to deactivate [Soul Split] for the meantime.
“I’ll probably head to the kingdom’s Mage Guild,” said Ataraxia with a slight shrug. “Wouldn’t hurt to learn a few more spells in preparation for the third round.”
“You?”
“The Blacksmith Guild, probably.” Valyr also shrugged his shoulders. “Might fulfill some quotas for the guild. Might not. Who knows?”
Ding!
Just as the two had taken those words as a sign to temporarily stop keeping up appearances in front of others, the two received a notification all of a sudden at the same time, causing the two to look at each other before bringing up screens in front of them.
Whoosh!
“…Ah.” Seeing that the notification was from a message, Valyr went ahead and skimmed through it, only for his expression to become solemn.
“…Hm.” Receiving a message at the same time as Valyr, Ataraxia’s expression also turned solemn as he gave the young man a brief glance. “Same message?”
“Same message.” Valyr softly let out a sigh.
“I guess we’re left with no choice but to postpone our plans for the meantime,” said Ataraxia with a slightly bitter smile, to which Valyr nodded in agreement.
“This takes precedence.”
At those words, the two showed no hesitation in entering the amphitheater once more, causing those that followed them out of the place to look at them in confusion.
Just moments earlier, the two of you wanted to get out of the amphitheater as soon as possible. Yet, not even a few seconds after exiting, you two decided to go back?
Amidst the confusion the bystanders felt, Valyr and Ataraxia swiftly traversed the various corridors of the amphitheater, eventually finding themselves in front of a familiar steel door.
Glancing at each other for a bit, Ataraxia soon stepped forward and knocked on it, eliciting a familiar response to erupt from the other side of the door not long after.
“Come in.”
Faintly nodding at those words, the two went ahead and entered the room, immediately being greeted by the sight of Lunarossa at one end of the large round table.
“I apologize for having you two come here at such short notice.” Taking note of how the two looked slightly disheveled as they entered, the woman gave the two an apologetic smile.
“No worries, Director,” replied Valyr whilst Ataraxia nodded in agreement. “You wouldn’t have called us to come here for nothing, after all.”
Allowing the two to sit down and catch their breath, it was only after the two looked somewhat better did Lunarossa open her mouth once more, conjuring a soundproof barrier around them before doing so.
“Before I get into the reason why I called you two here, you two still remember that we’re working to complete the same task, right?”
“Yes.” Ataraxia nodded, overlaying his soundproof barrier on top of Lunarossa’s before continuing. “Obtaining enough evidence and information to prove that Erika is a spy for someone else.”
“Correct.” The director nodded in return. “Although we have no conclusive evidence that Erika is a spy for either the orcs or the elves, we do have evidence that she is a spy for a certain underground organization.”
“The Crimson Cathedral?” Valyr’s eyes slightly widened at her words. “You’ve gotten confirmation?”
“It took the entire second round to come to a definite conclusion, but yes,” Lunarossa nodded in affirmation, only to then shift her gaze towards Ataraxia. “You must be wondering what the Crimson Cathedral is, right?”
The young man shook his head in response. “Not necessarily. Teacher told me everything I needed to know about the Crimson Cathedral for the meantime.”
Briefly glaring at Valyr at those words, the woman faintly let out an exhale before regaining her bearings.
“Since that’s the case, then let me get to the reason why I’ve called you two, then.”
“Have you two ever asked yourselves why there’s a four-day break before the third round begins?” asked Lunarossa, looking at the two with a calm expression.
“…Does it have something to do with Erika again?” asked Valyr after pondering over the question for a bit, recalling that the director had done something similar before the second round.
“It does.” Lunarossa confirmed his suspicions. “However, unlike before, we now have an opportunity to catch her in the act and gain substantial evidence of her being a spy.”
Hearing those words, both Valyr and Ataraxia’s eyes widened in surprise, not expecting things regarding their target to progress so soon.
“Could you tell us more about it, Director?” asked Ataraxia after that, with Valyr nodding in agreement.
“Even if you didn’t ask, I would’ve told you two either way.” Lunarossa faintly smiled at them in return, only for her expression to turn serious.
“According to the information I’ve had my people obtain during the second round, Erika has begun to ask a few of the participants to come with her, leading them down to the third underground floor of the amphitheater.”
“Although none of my people have seen what she’s doing with those participants, we’re led to believe that she brought them down there to do a ritual.”
