Chapter 1551: The Empire’s Request (1)
’…I probably shouldn’t be surprised at this point that I could obtain more information on the request from the Meltierre Heavenly Court.’
Standing near the entrance to the Heavenly Court, a faint hint of exasperation appeared on Valyr’s face as he recalled the brief conversation he shared with Byron through chat.
Having made a brief detour to the man’s workshop before heading out of the Blacksmith Guild, Valyr quickly added him to his friend list, only to send a message to him just a few minutes after heading out.
After asking a few cursory questions about the request he had chosen to accept from the empire, the young man eventually brought up the question he wanted to ask Byron, which involved the specifics of the empire’s request.
In response, the man told him once more that the only place to get it was none other than the place considered by everyone as the foundation of the empire’s strength.
The Meltierre Heavenly Court.
Faintly wondering if he should take a quick detour to meet Mystia now that he was at the Heavenly Court, Valyr decided to set the thought aside for the meantime, reminding himself that he didn’t really have a good reason to meet up with her.
’Well… I could ask her about how to upgrade the Mystic Rune Alchemist subclass,’ thought the young man not long after as he finally entered the Heavenly Court. ’But the empire’s request probably takes greater precedence.’
’After all, even though Byron hasn’t said anything about it, I’m sure I only have a limited amount of time to complete the request.’
“A pleasure to see you again, Ylvar.” Arriving at the court’s main hall, Valyr swiftly made his way to one of its counters, only to find out that the attendant before him was the one he frequently interacted with.
“It’s been a while, Theiss,” responded the young man to the greeting, giving her a faint smile. “How have you been?”
“Same old, same old.” The attendant let out a brief chuckle at the question. “Are you here to arrange a meeting with the Imperial Alchemist again?”
“Not this time, no.” Valyr shook his head. “I’ve come here to ask about the empire’s requests for the Blacksmith Guild.”
“Ah.” Knowing that the young man before her was a high-ranking blacksmith of the guild, Theiss faintly nodded at those words as she brought out a thin tablet from under the desk.
Infusing a bit of her energy into it, she then tapped on the tablet a couple of times, prompting the information she wanted to receive to appear on its surface.
“Head straight down the corridor to my right, then turn right on the first junction,” she told him, standing up to point at the specific corridor Valyr had to head down. “After that, turn left on the second junction.”
“Stop once you see a door with the name ’Norggif’ written on it,” Theiss continued. “In there, you could ask more about the specific request you accepted.”
“Thanks.” Nodding in response to her words, the young man soon parted ways with her, swiftly heading down the path that had been given to him in a matter of minutes.
“Turn right on the first junction… then turn left on the second.”
Following the directions Theiss had given to him, Valyr eventually found himself standing in front of a door that looked out of place with the Heavenly Court.
’Is this the right door?’ asked the young man to himself, noticing that the door looked like it was barely holding onto its dear life.
Yet, even though it seemed like it was bound to break at any time, the door still remained whole.
Seeing that the name ’Norggif’ was roughly carved on its surface, Valyr eventually felt all his confusion washed away as he stared at the name for a bit more.
Then, after briefly scratching the back of his head, he lightly knocked on the door.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
“…Who is it?” Waiting for someone on the other side of the door to respond, the young man soon heard an old man’s voice echo from the other side.
“The name’s Ylvar,” replied Valyr in a polite tone. “I’ve come to ask for more information regarding one of the empire’s requests.”
“Which one…?” asked the voice, a slight pause in his response.
“The one about the arquebus,” answered the young man. “Sir Byron recommended it to me as he felt it was only right for its creator to work on it.”
“…”
For a while after that, the atmosphere was surrounded in silence.
Just as Valyr was wondering whether he had spoken too much, the old man eventually responded with something that allowed him to be at ease. free we\bnove(l).com
“Come in.”
“…If you’ll excuse me.” Faintly nodding at those words, the young man went ahead and slowly opened the door.
Creak…
Taking a look at what was inside, Valyr was briefly taken aback after seeing that almost every nook and cranny within the room was filled with various machines and contraptions related to forging.
After feeling like horizons towards the world of forging were expanded by these machines, he then looked around to see where the old man he talked to earlier could be found, only for his sights to stop in front of one of the room’s furnaces.
“Huff… huff…”
Manually pumping a pair of bellows, a hunched old man continued to fan the flames within the furnace before him, his demeanor that of someone who had dedicated his entire life to the art of blacksmithing.
Deciding not to disturb what the old man was doing, Valyr slowly closed the door and moved to the side as he watched him continue to work the furnace.
Puff… puff..
Unknowingly, the young man found himself entranced by the old man’s movements, snapping back to reality only after the old man had chucked a few chunks of ore into the furnace.
“Sorry that took a while.” Turning around to look at Valyr, the old man gave him a slightly apologetic smile, causing many of the wrinkles on his face to bunch up. “Ylvar, right?”
“Yes, sir.” Valyr nodded, his expression solemn.
“Norggif.” Nodding in response, the old man took it upon himself to give an introduction to the former. “Just consider me an old fart the empire decided to keep around.”
“Anyways, you wanted to ask about the specifics of your request, right?” he asked, to which the young man nodded as confirmation.
Though, just as he expected the old man to start giving him more information on the request, Norggif instead asked him a question that caused him to be at a slight loss for words.
“As the creator of the arquebus, it makes sense that you’re planning to accept the request…”
“…But just to be sure… have you formally accepted the request yet?”
