Chapter 1626: Breaking Barriers: The Fourth Trial (3)
“…Yeah.”
“There’s no way I’d win against someone like that with my current abilities.”
Slowly standing up from the ground, Ataraxia had a self-mocking smile on his face as he glanced at the unmoving figure a fair distance away from him.
Thanks to the time he had spent honing his integration between movement and spell while waiting for the fourth trial to start, the young man was able to breeze through the first couple of opponents with ease, allowing Aeramis to understand how deep the young man’s comprehension of integration was.
At the same time, fighting against those opponents also allowed the young man himself to understand how far his integration had gone.
With the man’s words regarding the trial’s mechanics lingering in his mind, his overwhelming showcase of skill against the trial’s 2nd opponent allowing him to understand that his level of integration between movement and skill had already gone past 10%.
Considering how easy it was for him to absorb and adjust to the experience he accumulated thanks to [Perception of the Grand Origin], Ataraxia initially thought that he would only be able to integrate the two to around 10% at most.
Though, with reality itself telling him that his comprehensive abilities exceed even his expectations towards himself, the young man faced his 3rd opponent with great self-confidence.
…Only to knocked a couple of pegs down after fighting against the figure.
Although the difference between the 2nd and 3rd opponent was a further 10% integration between movement skills and one’s combat style, that small difference was enough for Ataraxia to understand that he was still not on par with his current opponent.
From what he could tell, he was still a couple notches away from reaching the same level of integration the 3rd opponent exhibited.
Nevertheless, with enough perseverance and the mindset to improve one’s abilities while in the midst of combat, the young man was able to endure over 50 moves against his 3rd opponent, giving him the opportunity to fight against a being whose integration between movement and combat had already reached 30%.
At this point, Ataraxia knew that he would undoubtedly lose against such a figure. After all, his level of integration was nowhere near the level needed to fight a being like that on even grounds.
Yet, as the thought of fighting a difficult foe surfaced in his mind, the young man began to feel bits of defiance awakening within him, telling him that he might be able to pull off a miracle against such an opponent as long as he tried hard enough.
And so, after letting out a calm breath, Ataraxia fought against his 4th opponent with that thought in mind.
Unfortunately, no matter how much he psyched himself up to remain at his peak fighting condition, the sheer difference in skill between them meant that the figure easily wiped the floor with him, sending the young man flying in just a few moves.
“At the very least, I now have an idea of what 30% integration looks like,” muttered Ataraxia to himself, taking in a deep breath to compose himself before shifting his gaze towards Aeramis.
Whoosh!
“So…” Seeing how the young man’s conquest of the fourth trail was abruptly stopped by the 4th figure’s overwhelming skill, the man had a slightly amused smile on his face as he came up to the former. “How does it feel?”
“Painful,” answered the young man, a bitter smile on his face. “Integrating your movement skill into your combat style is no joke.”
“It really isn’t.” Aeramis nodded in agreement. “After all, by integrating your movement skill into your style, you practically have to take into consideration of various other factors while doing so.”
“The distance between you and the opponent, the next move your opponent will make, the avenues of escape you have, the terrain surrounding you, you’ll have to take all of that and more into consideration if you want to achieve full integration.”
“However, considering how little time you’ve spent trying to comprehend this integration, it’s quite astounding to find out that you’ve already gone face-to-face with the 4th opponent during your first attempt,” continued the man, the amazement on his face sincere.
“Still nowhere near reaching the trial’s limit, though,” responded the young man, briefly reminding Aeramis of his conviction.
“Anyways, since I’ve been defeated by my opponent, do I have to take my second attempt as soon as possible? Or can I spend a bit of time digesting what I’ve learned before taking it?”
“You can spend as much time as you want comprehending,” said the man in response, his expression containing a hint of anticipation. “In fact, I wouldn’t even be surprised if you were to spend a couple of days honing your integration before using up your second attempt.”
“After all, you had no frame of reference on what to aim for before attempting the trial for the first time.” Aeramis faintly smiled. “Though, now that you do, I’m certain it won’t take long until you reach the end of the fourth trial.”
Smiling in response to the man’s words, the young man went ahead and spent the next few hours going over the differences between him and his 4th opponent in his mind.
Comparing his level of integration with the integration the 4th opponent showed him, Ataraxia slowly improved his control and usage over his movement skill, eventually reaching a point where his movements were more or less at the same level as the 4th opponent.
However, knowing that he only had two more attempts before his conquest of the fourth trial was over, the young man did not attempt the fourth trial again after reaching that point.
Instead, he pondered over the discoveries and understandings he had made during those few hours, only to then extrapolate and expound upon them with the help of [Perception of the Grand Origin].
With the monstrous ability to adapt and absorb every piece of experience he gained with ease, the young man only took another hour after that to exceed what the 4th opponent was capable of.
By the time two more hours had passed, Ataraxia felt as if his current level of integration was now on par with the 5th opponent.
Confident that he could still unearth much more potential out of himself, the young man spent a total of 12 hours improving his level of integration between his movement skill and combat style.
Whoosh!
Glancing at the unmoving figure he had to fight to proceed onto the fifth and final trial, the young man let out a soft exhale before looking at Aeramis with a calm expression.
“I’m ready.”
