- Chapter 1755 1755: Still a Subclass, Apparently

‘…Man.’
‘Even though I’ve gone through all those notifications a couple of times already, I still can’t believe I’ve gotten that much skills out of it.’
Lying on the ground as he allowed his mind to wander, Valyr blankly stared at the iridescent sky as he briefly thought back to the series of notifications he received from the subclass upgrade.
Seeing how the stats boosted by the subclass had gone up by almost a hundred points each, the young man was quite impressed with the effects of the upgrade.
Though, that all changed after getting a look at how many skills he obtained after pushing [Mystic Rune Alchemist] to Uncommon grade.
Fifteen.
He had obtained 15 skills from the system… just because he upgraded one of his subclasses to Uncommon grade.
‘Absurd,’ muttered the young man to himself, still finding it somewhat difficult to wrap his head around the number.
‘If it were an incredibly rare main class like what I currently have, then obtaining 15 skills out of it wouldn’t have been that much of a surprise.’
‘It’s the fact that I got that many skills after upgrading a subclass to Uncommon grade that makes it surprising,’ he continued, knowing that his other self was tuning in to his current train of thought. ‘I’m sure you can relate, right?’
‘…Not really?’ replied Ataraxia as he finished yet another successful attempt at Mystic Rune Alchemy. ‘After all, I’m you and not you at the same time. The extent of what I know about Greater Beyond is more or less what you know.’
‘With that being said, 15 skills for a subclass is a lot,’ the young man continued. ‘It’s around two to three times the amount of skills you would usually get after obtaining a new subclass.’
Valyr nodded at those words, feeling like the shock and surprise he felt moments earlier was finally dying down.
Closing his eyes for a bit to compose himself, the young man soon stood up once more before heading to where Mystia and his other self were.
‘Wait a second…’ Though, just as he began to make his way to them, a question popped up in his mind all of a sudden, causing him to briefly stop in his tracks.
‘Surely there’s no way I’d obtain that many skills again after upgrading it to Rare grade, right?’
Falling into silence after coming up with the question, Valyr eventually placed the thought at the back of his head after some time before continuing to make his way to where the duo were.
‘Whether the possibility exists or not, I could always ask Mystia for answers,’ said the young man to himself, only to appear in front of the duo not even a couple minutes later.
“…Miss Mystia?”
“Hmm?” Hearing her name be called, the woman in question turned to look around her with a raised eyebrow.
Seeing that the one calling for her was Valyr, a faint knowing smile appeared on her face as she had an idea of why he was calling for her. “How did the upgrade go?”
“Far better than I thought it would,” the young man answered truthfully. “I didn’t expect my stats to go up by that much… nor did I expect to receive so many skills from the upgrade.”
“Is that so?” Mystia let out a slight chuckle. “I’m guessing you have questions to ask me, then?”
Valyr nodded in response.
Taking in a deep breath after that, the young man soon began his round of questioning.
“Was the subclass intentionally designed to not give skills after obtaining them?”
“It was.” Mystia nodded in agreement. “You’ve read through the messages I’ve attached alongside the upgrade, right?”
The young man nodded once more.
“Then you already know that you were initially supposed to obtain a set of skills that would improve your concocting abilities,” she said in return. “Of course, from the messages I’ve attached, you also know that I’ve arranged it so that you only obtain those skills after upgrading the subclass to the next grade.”
“The reason behind that is quite simple,” said Mystia with a chuckle. “Doing so would fortify the foundation of the subclass even further.”
“After all, if you didn’t have any experience concocting potions beforehand, those set of skills would form the foundation of your alchemical abilities.”
Hearing those words, Valyr quickly understood what she was trying to say.
“So, what you’re trying to say is that you’re focusing on the accumulation of practical experience first,” said the young man. “That’s because more practical experience means greater control over the skill itself, right?”
“Exactly.” Mystia nodded with a smile. “Aside from that, gaining practical experience beforehand would reduce the chances of relying on the skills themselves to complete certain tasks.”
“As a blacksmith yourself, I’m sure you understand what I mean.”
Valyr nodded.
“Of course, that doesn’t mean the skills themselves don’t have any effect on the outcome of the craft,” said Mystia as she continued where she left off. “Which is another reason why I made those skills available only after the upgrade.”
“To cut a long story short, I found out that delaying the reception of skills increases the base efficacy of those skills once they’re actually obtained.”
“Aiming to find the right balance between the amount of effort required and the reward that came alongside it, I eventually came to the conclusion that delaying those skills to after upgrading the subclass to Uncommon grade would be the best choice,” she said, only to let out a bit of laughter soon after.
“Of course, I could delay those skills to only after upgrading it to Mythic grade, causing them to be powerful beyond compare… but even I wouldn’t want to go through all of that.”
Falling silent for a bit after she was done explaining, Mystia let out a soft sigh before returning her attention to the young man. “Any other questions?”
“Were the messages pre-recorded?” asked the latter as he nodded.
“Yes and no,” answered Mystia after giving the question a bit of thought. “The messages about pushing Mystic Rune Alchemy to the pinnacle are definitely pre-recorded. The ones that came after were ones I came up on the spot.”
“I’m guessing you did that to reduce the number of questions I had after the upgrade was done?”
“Pretty much,” the woman nodded, laughing once again. “Any other questions?”
“This might probably be the last question I have for now.” Closing his eyes for a bit, Valyr eventually remembered the question he wanted to ask Mystia from the very beginning.
“Go ahead.”
“Is the name [True Mystic Rune Alchemist] inspired by the classes with the ‘True Prodigious’ prefixes?”
“Partly, but it’s mostly due to the fact that you obtain actual skills after the upgrade that prompted me to add the word ‘True’ at the start of it,” replied Mystia, only to raise her eyebrow not long after. “…Is that seriously your last question?”
“Well…” Scratching his cheek for a bit, the young man eventually brought up the question he had in mind after going through the upgrade. “There’s one more.”
“I’m all ears.”
“Do… do you still consider [True Mystic Rune Alchemist] as a subclass?”
“Hmm…” Rubbing her chin for a bit as she pondered over the question, Mystia eventually gave the young man a response unlike any other. “I’d say it’s still a subclass… but not in the way it’s usually interpreted.”
“What do you mean?” Valyr raised his eyebrow in curiosity.
“Usually, when we use the word ‘subclass’, we use it to describe classes that have a narrower scope than main classes, right?” she asked in return.
“Yeah?”
“Well, in my case, the word ‘subclass’ means something else,” said Mystia with a slight smile. “Rather than a lesser main class…”
“Think of it as a substitute main class.”
