Raising up four fingers in front of the screen, the young man began his explanation.

“Although I’ve yet to confirm as to whether that number is fixed or not, from the findings I’ve gathered thanks to the Mystic Alchemical Rune, I’ve deduced that there are four categories a basic rune could fall under.”

Giving the system a bit of time to process what he just said, Ataraxia soon went ahead and listed down the four categories he had in mind.

“Core, Affinity, Executory, and Auxiliary.”

“These are the names I’ve given to the four categories, which more or less explains the purpose of the rune that falls under that specific category,” said the young man, a faint smile adorning his face.

The system asked after a bit of silence, reminding Ataraxia that the more information he shared with it regarding his understanding of the Mystic Runes, the better.

[Though your earlier demonstration has given the Apparatus a rough idea of the framework you’ve come up with for the Mystic Runes, there still exists a gap in knowledge when it comes to understanding it.]

Nodding in response to the message, the young man went ahead and broke the Mystic Alchemical Rune into its constituent parts once more, leaving only one basic rune for the system to see.

“Among the nine basic runes that make up the Mystic Alchemical Rune, the rune for ‘Creation’ is the only rune in the group that fulfills the first category I’ve come up with.”

“Just like the name implies, the Core rune serves as the base of the Mystic Rune, acting as both a foundation and a template of what is possible for the Mystic Rune to achieve.”

“As Mystic Energy itself holds the concept of creation, it makes sense that the Core rune of the Mystic Alchemical Rune is none other than ‘Creation’,” said Ataraxia.

“Though, with the aid of the other basic runes that are combined alongside it, that purpose is instead modified to be something more along the lines of transformation than pure creation.”

“Which lets me move on to the next category of runes I would like to talk about.”

Releasing a bit of Mystic Energy into the surroundings, Ataraxia went ahead and infused all of it into the ‘Creation’ rune, only to then split it into three runes that looked both similar and different from one another at the same time.

“After the Core rune comes the Executory rune,” said the young man. “From the name I’ve given to the category, Executory runes fulfill the purpose of letting a specific action manifest into reality.”

“Of course, the means that allows it to do so is through the modification of the Core rune’s meaning, subtly changing it into something that also takes the meanings of the Executory runes into consideration.”

“With that being said, the Mystic Alchemical Rune has three Executory runes.”

At those words, the young man infused a bit more Mystic Energy into each of the runes, making their underlying meaning a bit more prominent in front of the screen.

“Purify, Amplify, and Balance.”

“The ‘Purify’ rune fulfills the refinement portion that comes during the concoction process of an alchemical potion, while ‘Amplify’ and ‘Balance’ works together to improve both the quality and quantity of items that could be produced during the concoction process.”

“To be honest, I get the feeling that combining these two types of runes are more than enough to create a simple Mystic Rune,” said Ataraxia, conjuring a ‘Creation’ rune out of thin air before moving it closer towards the ‘Amplify’ rune.

Feeling the two resonate with one another, he then proceeded to infuse more Mystic Energy into it, allowing the energy to take on an ideal form as the two runes gradually formed a Mystic Rune that looked like a Mobius strip.

Though his eyes widened in surprise at how quick his idea had become a reality, the young man swiftly calmed down as he returned his attention back to the ancient-looking screen in front of him.

“This would be an example of that simple Mystic Rune,” said the young man, dispelling the other basic runes as he moved the newly created Mystic Rune a fair distance away from them.

“By combining the rune for ‘Creation’ and ‘Amplify’, the resulting Mystic Rune would have the effect of amplifying anything that goes through it.”

‘Of course, whether or not that’s true is still something I don’t know,’ the young man thought to himself, inwardly scratching the back of his head as he glanced at the Mystic Rune.

Seeing that the system was not interested in exploring what kind of capabilities the new Mystic Rune had, Ataraxia went silent for a bit to sort out his thoughts before continuing where he previously left off.

“After the Executory rune comes the Auxiliary rune,” he said, dispelling the newly created Mystic Rune as he replaced it with a basic rune. “Unlike the Executory rune, combining it with a Core rune does not yield in the creation of a new Mystic Rune.”

“Instead, the Auxiliary rune aims to modify the meanings contained within the Executory runes, which they themselves modify the meaning contained within the Core rune.”

“The Mystic Alchemical Rune only has one Auxiliary rune,” said Ataraxia, moving the basic rune closer towards the ancient-looking screen. “Its meaning is ‘Focus’.”

“Combined with the other runes making up the Mystic Alchemical Rune, the purpose of the ‘Focus’ rune is to add the possibility of targeting the effects of the Mystic Rune towards specific items.”

“However, if it were to be combined with something like the Mystic Rune I created earlier, it would instead concentrate the effect of ‘Amplify’, improving its effects to a degree.”

“…And with that out of the way, we are only left with Affinity runes.”

Whoosh!

Dispelling the ‘Focus’ rune he had just conjured, Ataraxia went ahead and replaced with a set of runes, each of which gave off a feeling that made it attuned towards a certain element.

“Unlike the three other categories I’ve mentioned thus far, the Affinity rune isn’t really something I fully understand yet,” said the young man truthfully, a hint of embarrassment on his face.

“However, what I do know is that Affinity runes involve the elements, attuning the resulting Mystic Rune to something that makes it more effective towards a certain element.”

“Of course, whether or not that’s the only purpose Affinity runes have is something I’ve yet to confirm, but what I’ve mentioned is undoubtedly one of the purposes it serves.”

“…And I guess that’s that.”

Letting out a soft sigh of relief after he was done with explanation, Ataraxia dispelled all of the runes he summoned as he looked at the ancient-looking screen in front of him.

Reading the few lines of text that flashed on the screen every once in a while, the young man could not help but feel a bit tense, wondering if there was something with his explanation.
