Chapter 1770: Fighting a Rank 7 (2)
’…Well then.’
’…So it’s an Elder Wyvern, huh?’
’Is that why Mystia said it was better for us to be kept in the dark about it?’
Listening to the exchange between the two Myth-level beings, both Valyr and Ataraxia could not help but look at each other for a bit as they exchanged a couple of words through their connection.
Though a number of possible opponents had crossed their mind earlier thanks to the information Mystia shared with them, hearing that they were going to fight an Elder Wyvern was definitely something they were not expecting.
After all, even though they hadn’t come across an Elder Wyvern firsthand, its materials were still something they had experience with, considering that the main portion of Valyr’s armor was currently made up of said materials.
Because, the two of them had a faint inkling of an idea of what an Elder Wyvern was capable of.
But of course, that did not mean the two of them truly knew how powerful an Elder Wyvern was.
With that in mind, rather than ease up at the mentioning of the beast, both Valyr and Ataraxia instead sported solemn expressions in response.
“Good expressions.” Taking note of the reactions the two had at the mere mention of their upcoming opponent, Hath had a faint smile on his face as he nodded in satisfaction. “That kind of reaction will definitely help you two go a long way on your paths.”
“In any case, a reaction like that towards an Elder Wyvern is warranted,” the man continued, his expression turning serious. “Though Ancient Wyverns have been spotted in some areas of the Infernal Badlands, an Elder Wyvern is still no easy opponent.”
“Speaking of which, how much do you two know about Elder Wyverns?”
Hearing those words, Valyr went ahead and explained his understanding of Elder Wyverns from the perspective of a blacksmith, talking about how he had experience with their materials during the forging process.
As for Ataraxia, he remained silent throughout the entire explanation, though he nodded from time to time to show that he was paying attention.
“It may not be the best perspective to understand how strong an Elder Wyvern is, but even having an idea of them at your rank in the first place is already quite an achievement.”
Listening to the young man’s understanding of Elder Wyverns, Hath eventually gave him a faint nod before turning to look at Mystia.
“Mind enlightening them on what it means for them to face an Elder Wyvern?”
“Does it really have to be me?” Mystia raised her eyebrow in return. “Wouldn’t you be better suited for something like that?”
“Why the hesitation?” Hath chuckled at the question. “I just want to see if you still know your stuff from your time here at the Infernal Badlands.”
“You better help me get some stuff from the Badlands after this,” said the former after a bit of thought as she let out a soft sigh. “Or else you can say goodbye to this outpost before the tournament even starts.”
While Hath was being reminded of what kind of person Mystia was from those words, the woman went silent for a bit as she thought about the right words to say.
“Though it might not seem like it at first, wyverns are related to dragons,” she said to Valyr and Ataraxia, beginning her explanation. “Well, to be more specific, all wyverns are related to dragons, while the opposite does not apply.”
“After all, every wyvern has a trace of dragon blood within them. With that being siad, the amount of dragon blood they have in their body, as well as their ability to tap into it, dictates what level of strength they have.”
“At the bottom would be the Half-Wyverns,” said Mystia, referencing the explanation Valyr shared with them earlier. “There are a couple reasons as to why the word ’Half’ is attached to their name, with the first one being the amount of dragon blood they have.”
“Compared to a true wyvern, the amount of dragon blood they have is so pitifully low that it’s just barely enough to distinguish them from other beings with trace amounts of dragon blood in them.”
“The other reason why the word ’Half’ is in their name is their control over this blood, which is either non-existent or abysmal at best.”
“Because of this, Half-Wyverns are generally found as Rank 1 or Rank 2 monsters, with Rank 3 Half-Wyverns practically a miraculous sight for one to come across.”
“Then, one step above those are Young and Nascent Wyverns,” Mystia continued, giving the two some time to digest her earlier words. “Unlike Half-Wyverns, wyverns that fall into these types are already considered true wyverns.”
“…Now that I think about it, there’s only a couple of differences between the wyverns after that.”
“Of course, the most important ones would be their age, as well as their level of strength.”
With those words in mind, Mystia continued with her explanation, giving the two a better understanding of the opponent they would be fighting quite soon.
According to her, Young and Nascent Wyverns were wyverns that spanned from Rank 2 to Rank 4, showcasing a bit of the might that was inherent in dragon blood.
On the other hand, True Wyverns were those that had gained actual control over their dragon blood, giving them a level of strength that allowed them to be on par with Legends and newly ascended Myths.
Above those were the Elder Wyverns, beings that not only had a greater amount of dragon blood in their bodies, but also had greater control over their dragon blood thanks to their age.
Unlike the True Wyverns that came before them, Elder Wyverns were considered by many to be rulers of certain regions, boasting a level of strength that would deter even the bravest hero to cower in fear.
With the level of control and amount of dragon blood in their bodies, the weakest Elder Wyverns were on par with those at the peak of Rank 6. Though, it was more common to find them as Rank 7 beings or greater.
Just like the one both Valyr and Ataraxia were up against.
“And last but not least are the Ancient Wyverns,” said Mystia. “Although it’s more common to find such beings beyond our world, some of them still roam our lands due to a number of various reasons.”
“However, make no mistake. Even an Ancient Wyvern at the peak of Rank 7 would be able to defeat 10 Elder Wyverns at the same level of strength without breaking a sweat.”
“Naturally, that’s because these beings have already reached the pinnacle of what’s possible for a wyvern to achieve.” She looked at the two with a serious expression. “They’re not called Ancient Wyverns for no reason.”
“Plus, if they just work on themselves for a bit longer…”
“They’d inevitably transform into a true dragon.”
