Chapter 1771: Fighting a Rank 7 (3)
’…’
’…Huh.’
By the time Mystia was done with her explanation, Hath took over and gave both Valyr and Ataraxia a better idea of what they were up against.
From the environment Elder Wyverns frequented, to the skills and inherent abilities such beings wielded, the man spared no piece of information before them, wanting to give them the highest chances of success in the process.
Yet, rather than be invigorated by the knowledge that was being shared with them, the two could not help but wonder if they were doing the right thing instead.
’Are we actually going to do this?’ asked Ataraxia through [Soul Entanglement], a hint of worry on his face. ’Wouldn’t it be fine if we just find another title to replace [Apex Hunter]?’
’It would be…’ Valyr looked back at him with a bitter smile. ’If we knew what other title we could replace it with, that is.’
Letting out a soft sigh, he continued, ’If you think about it, all of the titles we’ve gotten that reduce the efficacy of the Damage Restriction System came through a series of coincidences and fortunate circumstances.’
’I got [Slayer of Ascendants] and [Apex Hunter] while I was fighting Primitive Humanoids in the Four Pillars’ Inheritance, while you got [Anathema of the Ascended] through… sheer spite, I guess.’
’Of course, there’s no saying that we won’t be able to gain a title in the future that does something similar, but who knows when that will happen? Who knows if we’d even be able to get it in the first place?’
’…With all things considered, this might just be your best and only chance to grab [Apex Hunter],’ said the young man after a bit of silence. ’We could level up to the peak of Rank 5 now and increase our strength even further, but that might just make getting it become impossible in exchange.’
Remaining silent as he listened to his other self, Ataraxia took a brief glance at both Mystia and Hath, who looked back at the two of them as if they were just waiting for them to come to a decision.
Scratching the back of his head as the gears in his mind continued to turn, the young man let out a soft sigh of his own as a certain memory came to mind.
’Must be nice to get the title at the peak of Rank 3,’ said Ataraxia, his tone containing a hint of sarcasm. ’At that level, you just have to worry about the level difference to do it.’
’…Unlike me, who has to consider the difference in the tier of existence alongside the other shit that come after becoming a Myth just to get the same title.’
’…’ Though he knew that his other self was targeting him with his words, Valyr chose to remain silent as he understood through their connection that the former was just venting out his frustrations over the matter.
Then again, if he were in the same situation as his other self, he would have probably done the same thing.
Yet, one thing was certain.
Once Ataraxia was done venting out his frustrations, he’d make sure to obtain [Apex Hunter] no matter what.
’…Say, Valyr.’
After spouting off a few more choice words that would make an innocent person wince, Ataraxia eventually looked at his other self with a calm expression.
’You think it’s doable if I go all out?’
’More than doable,’ answered Valyr with great confidence.
’After all, nothing’s stopping me from sharing my strength with you, no?’
’…’ Remaining silent as he listened to his other self’s words, Ataraxia closed his eyes as he took in a deep breath.
Then, with a determined expression, he gave his other self a brief glance before giving both Mystia and Hath a nod of confirmation.
“Looks like I’m going to get busy for a bit.” Seeing the determined expression on the young man’s face, Hath broke out into a smile as he chuckled.
“For now, the three of you should stay here,” he said soon after, making his way out of the dining area. “I’ll update you once I confirm the whereabouts of the Elder Wyvern you’ll be fighting.”
“Alright.” Mystia nodded, with the two young men following suit. “Let us know if you need our help at some point.”
“The thought is appreciated, but it’s not necessary.” The man grinned in return.
“After all, I’m not called the director of this outpost for no reason.”
…
As they watched Hath leave the premises, the trio proceeded to exchange more information regarding the Elder Wyvern, coming up with a number of strategies that would reduce the difficulty of the eventual fight.
At some point in their conversation, the topic of skills eventually came up, which prompted Mystia to look at the two in curiosity.
Unfortunately for her, neither Valyr nor Ataraxia gave detailed information regarding their skills, even though Mystia was certain their abilities gave them the confidence to fight against opponents above their grade.
However, when she heard that Ataraxia had achieved a breakthrough in the understanding of Mystic Runes, Mystia could not help but look at the young man with great incredulity.
Yet, just as she was about to ask him more on the matter, the three received a message from Hath that everything was ready, with the man having successfully tracked the whereabouts of the Elder Wyvern.
With that, Mystia was forced to shelf the thought for the meantime, causing her to let out a sigh as the three then proceeded to make their way to where Hath was.
…
Whoosh!
Landing on the ground after flying through the Infernal Badlands for some time, the trio were met by Hath shushing them as he pointed at a small volcano in the distance.
“We’re only a few hundred meters away from where the Elder Wyvern is,” said the man, his expression serious. “I’ve already confirmed that the Elder Wyvern won’t be moving away from this place for quite some time, so I’d suggest we make a safe zone here.”
Hearing those words, Mystia nodded as she went ahead and cast a large barrier around them, only to then infuse it with great amounts of Arcana and Mystic Energy.
After that, she then cast a few more barriers around them, overlapping them with the first one she made in order to make sure it could withstand a number of attacks before shattering.
Nodding at the barriers in satisfaction, Hath proceeded to establish his own defense by casting a number of defensive spells on the surface of the multi-layered barriers.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
In a matter of seconds, a series of fiery red shields and lances appeared on top of the barriers, making it look as if it were an impenetrable fortress from the outside.
“Oh? The Elder Wyvern came out.” Just as the man was finished fortifying the defenses that would make up the safe zone, he noticed that the Elder Wyvern had left the volcano it was inhabiting.
“Now’s a good opportunity for you two to check how strong it is,” said the man after that, giving the two a suggestion. “Of course, it’s also a good opportunity for you two to decide whether to continue with the idea or not.”
Nodding in response to those words, both Valyr and Ataraxia focused their attention on the Elder Wyvern a few hundred meters away from them, pushing their perceptions to the limit in the process.
Once they were sure that their sights had locked onto it, the two then went ahead and activated their respective identification skills on the Elder Wyvern…
Only to then be met with a status screen that could only be described by them as terrifying.
