Chapter 476: Entering the great forest
When Ethan entered the city, the atmosphere immediately felt different. Groups of soldiers and adventurers moved quickly through the roads while messengers ran between defensive posts carrying urgent reports. Every person seemed to be preparing for something serious.
The entire city had entered a state of high alert.
Ethan walked slowly through the crowded streets while observing the situation carefully. Several defensive formations were being assembled near the inner gates, while supply teams transported weapons and medical equipment toward the outer walls. Even the ordinary civilians were moving hurriedly, many of them carrying belongings as if preparing to take shelter.
“The beast tide must be very serious this time,” Ethan thought quietly.
From the looks of the preparations, the city leadership clearly expected a large scale attack.
Ethan decided that it would be better to gather more information before making any decisions. He looked around for someone who might be willing to explain the current situation.
After a short search he noticed a young adventurer wearing the badge of a level one rank. The man looked nervous, but he appeared to have just returned from the outer wall, which meant he likely had fresh information.
Ethan raised his hand slightly and signaled for him to approach.
The level one adventurer immediately noticed Ethan’s gesture. When he walked closer and sensed Ethan’s aura, he quickly bowed his head with respect.
“Yes, sir?” he asked politely.
Ethan nodded calmly.
“What is the current situation outside the city?” he asked. “Can you give me a brief report? How many beasts are attacking, and what is the highest level among them?”
The young adventurer hesitated for a moment before answering.
“The majority of the beasts are between level one and level three,” he explained. “However the real problem is their number. The scouts estimate that there are millions of corrupted beasts gathering in the Great Forest. Even if we manage to fight them back, there is still a serious risk that the gray mist they carry could spread toward the city.”
His expression grew even more worried as he continued.
“If the mist spreads too far, the city could become contaminated even after the beasts are defeated.”
Ethan listened carefully.
Then he nodded slowly.
“That’s great,” he said with excitement.
The adventurer blinked in confusion.
“What did you say, sir?”
Ethan immediately coughed awkwardly.
“Cough, cough. I meant that the situation sounds extremely dangerous,” he corrected himself. “We need to be careful.”
The young adventurer nodded quickly, clearly assuming that he had misunderstood Ethan’s first reaction.
However inside Ethan’s mind the situation looked very different.
Millions of corrupted beasts meant an enormous amount of gray mist.
And gray mist meant energy.
Energy that Ethan could absorb to strengthen his law strand.
Naturally he felt quite satisfied.
The adventurer suddenly remembered something and spoke again.
“Oh, there is one more thing, sir.”
Ethan looked at him.
“What is it?”
“The Ragnarok Clan is sending one of their top officials to take command of the defense,” the adventurer said. “I heard that he is a level seven powerhouse.”
Ethan raised an eyebrow slightly.
“A level seven?”
The adventurer nodded enthusiastically.
“Yes. That is why everyone in the city is so nervous. Most of us have never even seen a level seven being before.”
Ethan nodded calmly.
“Thank you for the information.”
The adventurer bowed again before returning to his duties.
Ethan turned his attention toward the western side of the city.
That direction led to the Great Forest.
It was also the place where the beast tide would eventually emerge.
He began walking in that direction without hesitation.
However before he could travel very far, a man suddenly stepped directly into his path.
The man wore the armor of a mid ranking guard and looked at Ethan with a slightly annoyed expression.
“Hey, you,” he said sharply.
“Level two adventurers are stationed in the third defensive line. Where do you think you are going?”
Ethan almost snorted coldly.
In terms of real combat ability he could already challenge level three fighters with the help of his sword.
However he quickly remembered the strict hierarchy inside the city.
Creating unnecessary trouble right now would only attract attention.
Ethan simply nodded politely.
“Thank you for the reminder,” he said calmly.
Then he turned and walked toward the direction the guard had indicated.
He walked slowly for several minutes.
Then suddenly he felt something unusual.
A surge of divine energy suddenly rushed through his body like a powerful current.
Ethan immediately stopped walking.
A surprised expression appeared on his face.
“Whoa,” he murmured.
“So he already completed that trial?”
A faint smile appeared on Ethan’s lips.
His law strand had grown.
Before this moment it had reached 30 kilometers.
Now it had expanded to eighty kilometers.
The sudden increase in strength filled Ethan with excitement.
However it also reminded him of something important.
If he wanted to reach the pinnacle of power, he could not rely only on slow and careful progress.
He needed resources.
He needed energy.
And the city was simply too limited for his ambitions.
Ethan suddenly changed direction.
Instead of moving toward the third defensive line, he began running toward the western wall.
The Great Forest was outside the city.
That was where the real opportunity lay.
Several adventurers nearby noticed his sudden movement.
“Hey, wait!” one of them shouted.
But Ethan did not slow down.
Within seconds he reached the massive western wall.
Without hesitation he jumped over the edge and disappeared outside the city.
The adventurers watching from behind were stunned.
“What the hell is he doing?” one of them asked in disbelief.
Another adventurer shook his head.
“That guy is the outsider who arrived recently,” he said.
“I guess he realized he cannot survive the beast tide here, so he decided to run into the forest and end things quickly.”
A few members of a level three adventurer group laughed bitterly.
“Well, that is one way to avoid suffering.”
However Ethan himself was completely unconcerned with their opinions.
The moment he landed outside the wall, he felt a strange and eerie aura surrounding the entire forest.
The gray mist drifting between the trees carried a heavy sense of corruption.
Ethan closed his eyes briefly and inhaled slowly.
“That is the feeling,” he said with quiet satisfaction.
Then he began running deeper into the forest.
His objective was very clear.
If he could kill at least two thousand level one corrupted beasts, he would be able to gather enough gray mist energy to extend his law strand by another twenty kilometers.
That would push him to one hundred kilometers.
A crucial milestone.
Ethan slowed his steps and stopped in a small clearing between the trees.
He closed his eyes.
Then he released his Mental Domain.
An invisible wave spread outward from his body and expanded across the forest.
The range was not extremely large yet.
His domain could currently cover only about ten kilometers.
However that was already more than enough for what he wanted to do.
Within seconds Ethan began sensing the presence of monsters.
Dozens of corrupted creatures were moving through the trees.
Some were wolves.
Others were twisted insects or mutated beasts formed from gray mist.
Ethan opened his eyes slowly.
“Let us begin.”
He raised his hand and created a small spherical device made of compressed energy.
It was a simple bomb.
Without hesitation he threw it deep into the forest.
The device landed several hundred meters away.
Then it exploded.
Boom.
The sound echoed through the forest like thunder.
Immediately Ethan felt movement inside his Mental Domain.
Monsters were reacting to the explosion.
Many of them began moving toward the source of the sound.
Ethan’s lips slowly curved into a satisfied smile.
The trap had worked perfectly.
More and more monsters were entering his perception.
He raised his hand calmly.
Then he spoke a single word.
“Disintegrate.”
