A low, chittering sound echoed through the ruins as a horde appeared.
Dozens of creatures crawled out from the shadows with grotesque bodies.
Some looked like a twisted blend between apes and spiders. They had long limbs, hunched backs and multiple glowing eyes clustered across their faces.
Others resembled giant moths with tattered but massive wings and hardened shell-like plates covering their bodies.
Their movements were erratic, aggressive and hungry.
“Formation!” Marcus shouted.
The group reacted instantly by activating their branches.
Kyle, roared as his body expanded… his muscles bulged unnaturally as his transformation ability kicked in.
Mei’s eyes glowed faintly as her bloodline power activated and strange butterfly patterns appeared all over her skin.
Tara’s arms tranformed, forming blade-like extensions from her elbows.
The creatures charged and so did the group.
From the first clash, Kyle sent one of the creatures flying with a dent in their chest.
Chaos ensued as claws met Tara steel like blade arms which cleaved through them almost instantly. She proceeded to spin around, slicing half the head of one of the massove moth creature off.
Wings beat violently against the air as more attacked.
The ape-spider creatures leapt forward, striking unpredictably with their multiple limbs.
But the group moved well together using coordinated attacks.
West wished Jax was here… they could have both cleared out this horde within a minute but the synergy among these recruits was still solid.
One creature leapt towards West but Kyle grabbed it mid-air before slamming it into the ground.
Another swooped down but Mei dashed forward and sliced through its wing, sending it crashing.
Eric blew bubbles out of his mouth which expanded rapidly… the moment the bubbles touched any of the creatures, they were sucked in and drained of their lifeforce in a minute. However, he had to be careful not to let it touch his teammates.
Within minutes, the horde was gone and only bodies were left scattered across the ground.
The group stood breathing heavily.
“…That was easier than I thought,” Lina stated while Marcus nodded in agreement.
“Stay focused. That was just the first wave.”
West didn’t even move from his standing point all through… he simply watched.
He didn’t even summon any of his beings because he felt this was too little of a challenge for them.
As they continued deeper into the ruins, more creatures appeared intermittently.
Strange hybrids in smaller groups… Spider-apes skittering across walls… Massive moths gliding silently overhead…
Each encounter ended victorious with the group managing to wipe the hordes out.
They continued collecting loot along the way.
At one point, Derek tossed his bag toward West.
“Since you’re not doing anything,” he said with a smirk, “why not carry this?”
West caught it, looked at it and then tossed it right back.
“I’ll pull my weight when the time comes.”
Derek caught it with a frown.
“The hell is that supposed to mean?”
He stepped forward, clearly irritated.
“You think you’re too good to help?”
The tension rose instantly but before it could escalate, Marcus stepped in.
“Enough.”
His voice carried authority.
“Mind your manners.”
Derek clicked his tongue but backed off while Marcus looked at the group.
“We’re close.”
“Based on the map, we’ve cleared most of the ruin.”
“Maybe two sections left.”
“Stay sharp.”
The group nodded before moving forward again.
All of a sudden, a strange sound echoed.
RUMBLE~
The ground beneath their feet trembled slightly causing everyone to freze.
“…Did you feel that?” Lina whispered.
Another stronger rumble followed in the next instant causing dust to spread.
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“…That’s not normal.”
West’s gaze shifted forward in suspicion as the rumbling grew louder and more violent instead of stopping.
At first, it felt like a distant tremor but within seconds, the entire ground beneath their feet began to shake uncontrollably.
“Something’s wrong!” Lina’s voice echoed faintly from the other side of the formation.
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“Everyone—stay alert!”
RUMBLE—!
The stone floor cracked as thin lines spread outward like spiderwebs, splitting the ground beneath them.
All of a sudden…
BOOOOM!
Several towering structures around them suddenly collapsed.
Pillar shattered as massive chunks of stone crashed down from above.
“HEY, LOOK OUT—!” Derek shouted.
Tara turned and her eyes widened in horror as a gigantic slab of rock, easily the size of a truck, was falling straight toward her.
It was too fast and too close for her to react in time.
Derek had dashed forward instinctively but even at his fastest, he wouldn’t make it in time.
Tara’s body refused to move as the shadow of the falling slab swallowed her whole.
At the last second, a blur suddenly moved.
All everyone saw was that, one moment, West was several meters away and the next, he was standing right beside Tara.
Hhis leg swung upward with intensity.
BOOM!
The kick connected with the falling slab and in that instant… the impossible happened…
The massive rock didn’t just break… it exploded into thousands of fragments that blasted outward in all directions like a detonated grenade.
Debris rained down harmlessly around Tara while she stood there, completely untouched.
For half a second nobody moved as silence reigned around them.
Every single person stared at West in disbelief.
’What… did we just see?’
Similar thoughts ran through their minds but there was no time to process it.
The ground shook again and this time, the ruins began to change.
Massive stone walls rose from the ground.
CRRRRRRRRRR—!
They shot upward violently, separating the battlefield into different sections.
“WATCH OUT!” Marcus shouted.
The walls kept rising, higher and higher until they reached the distant ceiling far above, sealing off entire portions of the ruin.
The environment tranformed… pathways changed and open spaces closed.
New corridors formed where none had existed before.
And within minutes, the ruins had completely restructured themselves.
Unfortunately, due to this, the group had been split apart.
When the dust finally settled, silence reigned as two separate groups stood on opposite sides of towering stone barriers.
On one side was Marcus and five others while on the other was West, Tara, Derek and Mei Lin… a group of four.
“…You’ve got to be kidding me,” Derek muttered.
