My Girlfriend is a Zombie - Chapter 1018: Hiding in the Bushes

Behind the door was another waterlogged passage. Ling Mo closed the door behind him and proceeded into the depths with his flashlight in hand.
“Drip…”
The occasional sound of dripping water echoed through the passage, creating a tense atmosphere. A few seconds later, Ling Mo turned a corner.
“Tsk…”
He was taken aback. Ling Mo even stepped back a couple of paces, returning to the other side of the corner. After shaking his head, he ventured forward again, but the result was the same…
“Tsk!”
It was an arched, enclosed passage, but the striking part was that this nearly ten-meter stretch was lined with glass cabinets. There was even a hammock hanging from the ceiling. Discovering such a place under these eerie circumstances was just… too bizarre.
Ling Mo, dumbfounded, walked into this “room” and approached the nearest cabinet. He reached out to open the already wobbly cabinet door. The cabinet was nailed to the wall to ensure it wouldn’t be submerged. The contents inside, however, had clearly been rummaged through…
“‘Humans and Psychology’… ‘A Hundred Ways to Interpret Expressions’… ‘Don’t Lie to Me’… ‘Why She Climbed into Your Bed’,” Ling Mo read out loud as he pulled out book after book, unable to suppress a chuckle. “Ha… are you kidding me…”
He had encountered non-human creatures that could read before, but one so obsessively and indiscriminately studying human nature was definitely a first. Recalling the attitude of that little girl, Ling Mo suddenly felt he understood a bit more…The scattered clothes of various styles… the monster hiding among the survivors… the “study” concealed in such a place… and that door likely used to observe the underwater creatures’ variations and as an entrance and exit…
“Wait… if this study is for its use, then every time it comes in and out, it would inevitably get its clothes wet, right? And… that staircase clearly hasn’t been used in a long time!” Ling Mo suddenly realized this. He tossed the books aside and headed further into the “study” with his flashlight.
If he was right, then there must be…
“Squeak…”
Ling Mo pushed aside the hammock, hearing a faint sound from above. He looked up, a glint of realization in his eyes: “Yes, there must be another, closer… more convenient exit here.”
While contemplating, Ling Mo bit down on the flashlight and climbed onto the hammock. He followed the ropes up to the ceiling and indeed found a barely noticeable gap. The hammock’s suspension point was right at the edge of this gap, a detail easily missed from below.
With some difficulty, Ling Mo managed to secure himself temporarily on the ceiling. He quickly pushed upwards along the edge, and soon, a circular cement cover shifted and was pushed aside by him. He hurriedly climbed up, discovering that the handle meant for human use was on the other side of the cover.
“So, this must be some sort of reservoir area below, right? With such a cement cover, maintenance workers can conduct inspections…” Ling Mo glanced back down, then swept the flashlight around. He quickly realized that it was a very short passage, and not far ahead, sunlight was streaming in.
Ling Mo, somewhat surprised, turned off the flashlight. He wondered where exactly this place was. Could it be near the survivors’ Headquarters? Regardless of where, Xia Na and Li Yalin were surely outside this exit…
…
“Thirty!” Yu Shiran had finished counting the moment Ling Mo pushed the door. She waited an additional two seconds, then turned and sped up the stairs.
“Caw caw caw!”
Upon entering the passage, Yu Shiran heard a series of strange shrieks. The sound seemed to come from afar, and after it faded, a dense “rustle” followed.
“Strange…” Yu Shiran glanced in that direction, then turned towards the exit. “Oh well, Ling Mo said he had a plan, so I’ll trust him. Trust… trust… hehe, interesting human…”
“Caw caw caw!”
The eerie shrieks echoed again from the other side of the passage. However, Yu Shiran didn’t notice that this time, the “rustle” following the shrieks had increased.
…
Clang-
A sewer cover suddenly shook and slowly slid aside.
“Hopefully, no one noticed… Also, the Zombie Puppets should buy Yuwen Xuan and the others some time. Just not sure which way they’ll come out…” Ling Mo thought to himself as he cautiously peered out from the sewer opening.
“Hahaha… Didn’t expect you to be so quick on your feet! But it did say, two minutes… no, now it should be one minute… no, fifty-nine seconds left! If we’re still alive by then, that long-haired girl will die! You’ve only killed one so far, and that was by accidentally attracting a dozen zombies…”
“What do you think? In a place like this, what could you possibly attract? Even if I shout at the top of my lungs, the Zombies might not even notice this spot… hahaha…”
Suddenly, the maniacal laughter vanished.
Mu Chen and the others, who were sprinting ahead, immediately halted and turned to look behind them. As he turned, Mu Chen cautiously remarked, “Be careful, they might be up to something again… though this hasn’t happened before.”
“Damn it! If this keeps up, I’m really going to charge at them with a knife! If it weren’t for the restriction against direct attacks, they’d have been dead a hundred times over…” Ye Kai cursed.
A minute ago, when the game started, they had already anticipated that it wouldn’t be easy… and the reality proved that this game was nothing short of a twisted one-sided torment! First, the rules had them tied down, and then the route itself was a brutal challenge… they had two minutes to reach the designated spot and figure out how to take these people down. Their only option was to lure Zombies, but in practice, this method wasn’t very effective either.
The Zombies they attracted would attack indiscriminately, while the opponents could suddenly transform, both in aura and appearance, to resemble Zombies in no time… it was like they were cheating!
However… they did have choices… when a large number of Zombies were drawn in, they could decisively abandon their teammates. Those with stronger abilities, like Mu Chen and Ye Kai, could easily reach the destination within two minutes. The remaining ones would delay, and once the Survivors’ abilities wore off, they’d be surrounded by Zombies… Zhang Xincheng could use his gecko ability to survive as well.
But clearly, they wouldn’t make such choices. In fact, each of them knew deep down that the Monster lurking somewhere, watching the spectacle, wanted to see this scenario unfold. It aimed to force them into making such choices, even pushing them towards self-sacrifice…
These Survivors kept putting on various acts to achieve this goal. Of course, given the current situation, they were quite pitiful…
“Damn, you…” Ye Kai turned around and couldn’t help but curse.
The Survivor who had been taunting them was now sprawled on the ground, half his body sunk into a sewer opening. He lay motionless, his knife tossed aside.
“Accidentally fell into the sewer? You must be kidding! When we passed by earlier, the manhole cover was securely in place! Please, think before you act… Instructor, let’s go…” Ye Kai was furious, knowing full well they were likely putting on a show, yet their side was still delayed…
Another Survivor lay on the ground, not even glancing as he rushed past the fallen one. But just as he was about to clear the spot, his foot suddenly slipped into the sewer opening. He struggled fiercely for a moment, but soon, a pool of blood spread beneath him.
Ye Kai froze mid-step, and the others stared incredulously at the sewer entrance. Clearly, this wasn’t just an act.
However, it was possible that the first Survivor had secretly killed the other to lure them in. Everyone exchanged wary glances.
“Come on, stop pretending!”
“Trying to trick us over there? Ha!”
Mu Chen scoffed, signaling Gu Shuangshuang to investigate. As Gu Shuangshuang cautiously approached, the motionless corpse suddenly twitched, accompanied by a clanging sound.
“Ah!” Gu Shuangshuang cried out instinctively, while Skinny Monkey grabbed Zhang Xincheng, only to be shoved aside.
The corpse continued to twitch for a while before shifting to the side. Then, a pair of hands appeared at the edge of the sewer.
“Gulu…” Mu Chen swallowed hard, stunned. What was happening? Had the Monster added a new twist?
A Monster emerging from the depths… truly menacing.
“Get ready!” Ye Kai whispered. Yet, facing a Monster capable of swiftly dispatching two Survivors, he wasn’t confident he could escape unscathed, let alone defeat it.
At that moment, the “Monster” finally emerged, muttering to itself.
“Heh… tripping people up works well, almost like hiding in the bushes… and it’s pretty easy too.” After ruffling its Hair, the “Monster” turned to Mu Chen and the others, asking, “What are you doing? And… did you just see…”
