- Chapter 1044 - 1046: Sight In The Sky

Damon’s confusion was perhaps the most confused he had ever been. This was not what he thought would happen. He had expected Ashergon, still carrying his ancient pride, to rush toward him full of anger at the sight of his once great enemy.
They would fight an epic battle, which honestly would just be Damon fleeing for his life and trying not to die under the dragon’s flames, and after a daring trick and much luck he would finally, finally succeed. His tale would be immortalized and he would step off the battlefield as a great hero.
Years later he would look at the burn marks that refused to heal and brag to his adolescent daughter of his great escapades as she rolled her eyes, having heard the story a million times already. That was what was supposed to happen.
But no.
Ashergon did not take any chances.
As soon as he sensed his mind being touched by Mind Dominate, he turned around and bolted. He was not about to stay here and meet that fiend again.
If he could scream, he would, but he still had to retain the last scraps of his dragon dignity.
The scars and trauma from more than a hundred thousand years returned in an instant.
He still remembered his old den on the Demon Continent. He had spent years making it perfect. It was the best. Better than the best. The height was just right for looking down on the tiny creatures below as he rained flames from the sky.
His peaceful days had come to an end.
He had not even done anything wrong. He was a peaceful dragon minding his own business. Occasionally he burned down some towns and cities, but it was not much. The creatures always rebuilt them quickly and filled the space again. No one minded. In fact, they seemed to love it.
They would occasionally send a party of warriors to his lair carrying fancy gifts and entertaining him with a small battle to show their power.
Of course, it would be rude not to burn them alive and take their offerings.
He always did just that and made sure no one survived.
Ahhh. Those were the good days.
Until one day a lone creature climbed his high mountain. He did not care about names. Many had come before.
But he remembered this one.
“I am Ashcroft, the Demon Lord of Domination.”
Ashergon never forgot what came after.
First came his dragon’s arrogance.
Then came the pain.
Then came the horrifying realization that Ashcroft could not be beaten because he was not even trying to kill him from the start.
He wanted Ashergon to be his mount.
It had started exactly like this. Ashcroft kept using Mind Dominate to weaken his mind piece by piece.
In the end Ashergon barely managed to escape. He hid for years and only came out when he found out that Ashcroft was dead.
’It was a trick. That fiend pretended to be dead to lure me out.’
’Foul play. Foul play.’
He thought that as he fled now, not daring to look back in Damon’s direction.
He just had to reach his den, take his treasures, and leave. The last time he met Ashcroft all his things were looted and he had been poor for many years. It was only after he robbed Rexagon the Carrion King that he finally regained some treasures. Of course, he had been burning cities and taking things all these years, so added with that he had many treasures again.
“What are you doing? Go after him,” Ashcroft screamed in Damon’s head.
Damon did not know if he could keep up with Ashergon’s speed. Even if he used his wings, he could not reveal them here with so many people watching.
So he waved his hand and projected several runes to his feet. The runes were complex and were a product of Mugu’s research, though they were incomplete since Mugu did not know much about runes yet.
However, to Damon from the future, he simply filled in the blanks and mastered it.
The runes flared.
They lifted him into the air.
Damon shot forward like a black streak, leaving sonic booms behind him.
“Stop right there, Ashergon. Don’t run from me!” he screamed aloud.
“My retirement is hinged on you. Stop running!”
When Ashergon heard that, he doubled his speed as a single thought entered his head.
’He is no longer trying to turn me into his mount. He wants to eat me.’
“Begone, you foul fiend. Away from me. Away!”
And so Damon charged after Ashergon, who was already disappearing over the horizon toward the mountains while Damon was much slower and steadily losing him.
The world below watched this madness.
Yes, this was madness.
How could a mere human chase a mountain sized dragon and the dragon be the one running away?
Surely he could kill him with a single swipe of his claws or a single breath.
Down below, Evangeline ran into the forest after Damon along with a streak of lightning that was Leona. They ran after Damon, who ran after the great dragon.
Evangeline was worried because she knew Damon was getting a high from this chase, and the moment Ashergon stopped and turned, he would end Damon easily.
Damon streaked away into the distance as the troops and those in the seventh class advancement, heavily injured from the battle with Ashergon, looked on in shock. Then they pulled out a communication magical device and called the main command base.
The young looking man in the seventh class wiped the blood from his lips and, unsure how to even report this without sounding insane, cleared his throat.
Then he spoke.
“This is Zarin Falgan to central. This sounds hard to believe, but Ashergon has just fled at the sight of Damon Grey. As we speak now, the dragon is fleeing to its nest as Damon gives chase.”
He paused for a moment, then added,
“That would be all for my report.”
He looked at his hand and the ash covered battlefield.
“Haaaa. I have grown old.”
