Chapter 106: Chapter 75: Little Bear Panties, Jiang Ning’s First Clue
Because their relationship was so distant, he never quite knew how to reciprocate.
But after Jiangg Yao came into his life, she had subtly started to change him.
Why was she always able to express her feelings so directly? She could easily say “I like you,” “I love you,” “I want you to hold me,” without feeling the least bit embarrassed.
Chen Yuan thought this kind of communication was great. He could clearly feel Jiangg Yao’s affection.
That was why, after hesitating for a long time, he finally made the call today.
On the other end of the line, Jiang Zhengfeng was completely stunned. He sat in his high-rise office, dazed for a long time.
Then, he lowered his head, a distinctly gratified smile spreading across his face. Even the wrinkles at the corners of his eyes seemed to be smiling. In that moment, Jiang Zhengfeng suddenly looked older.
“I will, son,” Jiang Zhengfeng said softly.
What Chen Yuan didn’t know was…
That single sentence would be enough to keep the old man happy for months!
“Well, that’s all for now. I have to get back to my homework.”
“Okay, wait—”
Just as he was about to hang up, Jiang Zhengfeng remembered something and asked, “Oh, right. Your birthday is coming up soon, isn’t it?”
“It is.”
Chen Yuan was born in the winter, on January 20th.
“I’ve picked out a gift for you.”
“Anything is fine, as long as it’s not too expensive.” Chen Yuan scratched his head. For his eighteenth birthday, Jiang Zhengfeng had actually gifted him a ridiculously expensive watch, saying that every man needs a watch of his own once he comes of age.
It was a mark of maturity.
As a poor kid who grew up in a small county town, Chen Yuan simply couldn’t accept wearing a watch worth nearly a million on his wrist.
His mom wouldn’t have it, either. She was so shocked she confiscated it on the spot, all while giving Jiang Zhengfeng a reproachful glare.
“Well, it’s not too extravagant. I picked out a car for you to make getting to and from campus easier. Plus, you got your driver’s license last summer vacation.”
“A car again! If I’m not mistaken, it’s probably not cheap, is it…” Chen Yuan sighed, pressing a hand to his forehead.
He’d already refused several times. It wasn’t that he didn’t want a way to get around.
It was that the cars Jiang Zhengfeng picked out were completely unsuitable for someone his age!
What kind of college student drives an Aston Martin?
A car worth around five million!
If he showed up on campus in that, everyone would see it. He’d become infamous overnight, and he’d never be able to interact with his classmates like a normal person again.
He’d probably even be ostracized.
Chen Yuan had to admit, driving a luxury car would certainly satisfy his own bit of vanity. But if the price was that much unwanted attention, he didn’t want it.
“…” Jiang Zhengfeng went silent.
“Great. I was right. Which model did you pick this time?”
“Son, I’m starting to think your ideas about money are all wrong. No matter how expensive a car is, as long as it’s affordable, it’s not a waste. It’s not even a luxury.”
“But it’s your money, not mine. If I could afford it myself, I wouldn’t say no.”
“Isn’t my money your money? You’re my only son.” In his office, Jiang Zhengfeng’s brow furrowed. “It’s not like I can have another one. Your mother’s been gone for so many years.”
“I don’t want to fight with you. Let’s just talk about the car later, okay? Don’t make any decisions on your own.”
With that, Chen Yuan hung up the phone.
He was left speechless. The two of them had argued about this many times before.
’In Jiang Zhengfeng’s view, refusing a father’s gift was a form of estrangement. It just went to show that their relationship wasn’t close enough, that there was still a barrier between them.’
’Actually, Jiang Zhengfeng had already done more than enough. He hadn’t even made Chen Yuan change his surname, completely respecting his wishes.’
’But mending a familial bond was never something that could be done overnight.’
…
To calm himself down, Chen Yuan threw himself into his homework. He scribbled away furiously and, after another solid hour, managed to finish everything.
He let out a long sigh of relief and dropped his pen.
Only then did he notice the uncomfortable, bloating pressure in his lower abdomen. He’d drunk two large glasses of water after waking up, and now he was bursting!
The more he thought about going to the bathroom, the more intense the pressure became. Holding it in was agony.
On top of that, his stomach was starting to hurt.
’Can’t eat too much greasy food… it really gets things moving.’ He started to regret those few extra gulps of tonkotsu broth.
Chen Yuan shot to his feet and rushed toward the bathroom. He was in such a hurry he didn’t even flip on the light.
「In the bedroom.」
Jiangg Yao was also slowly stirring awake. She rubbed her eyes, feeling as if her whole body had been taken apart and put back together wrong. Aches and pains radiated from more than one spot, her head was foggy, and her thoughts were a complete mess.
She sat up and instinctively looked for some water.
Her vacant gaze swept the room for a long moment before finally landing on a glass of water on the small table beside the bed.
Jiangg Yao tilted her head back and took several gulps. Setting the cup aside, she swung her legs over the side of the bed, her soft feet touching the floor. The room was so dim it blurred her vision, and the sky outside had already gone completely dark.
She couldn’t be bothered to find her slippers, so she just felt around for them with her feet.
Jiangg Yao didn’t even have the mental capacity to wonder where she was. Like a puppet on strings, she scratched at her messy hair, opened the door, and headed for the bathroom.
The living room was completely silent.
It was just as dark here, and every object was just a hazy silhouette.
Fortunately, apartment 1302 had the exact same floor plan as her own, 1301. This allowed Jiangg Yao to find her way to the bathroom on muscle memory alone.
She didn’t notice the person sitting on the toilet…
Chen Yuan, clutching a wad of toilet paper, was caught completely off guard. When a “ghostly figure” suddenly slipped into the room, he jumped in fright!
