Chapter 166: Chapter 110: The Ultimate Encounter! Chen Yuan and Jiangg Ning Run Into Yaoyao
By noon, the sky was no longer so dim, but the wind by the sea remained strong, and the water was just as cold. The tourists could only stand on the sand and sigh, watching the white-capped waves crash against the shore. Swimming was out of the question for the day.
Jiang Ning and Chen Yuan had the foresight to visit the aquarium and a famous local temple on a low mountain. They took lots of beautiful photos and even got a golden Buddha Pendant.
“You believe in Buddhism?”
Chen Yuan had asked at the time, genuinely surprised. ’A philosophy major like Jiang Ning actually believes in this stuff?’ He had never believed in the existence of gods or the Buddha. Back in the small northern county where he grew up, the old ladies would burn incense and pray to Buddhas and other deities during every festival. Even when they traveled, their first stop was always a temple to light some incense.
When he was a child, on certain holidays, he would go play ball with his classmates. As soon as he stepped out of his house and walked through the neighborhood alleys, he could always smell the pungent, choking scent of burning incense from an old lady’s home next door.
The older he grew and the more he learned, the less he believed that any gods were watching from above.
Back when Chen Yuan was in middle school, there was this bald principal!
He embezzled who knows how much money, kept a wife and a mistress, and was as pot-bellied and fat as a pig. Yet, he was promoted year after year.
On the other hand, there was Chen Yuan’s respected Chinese teacher. He burned incense and prayed to Buddha; he was kind and frugal. He and his wife saved their salaries for many years, hoping to buy a new apartment so they could have a second child.
After painstakingly picking out an apartment and renovating it, they moved in, filled with joy. But who would have thought the apartment had a major problem? The levels of toxic substances were off the charts! The entire family got leukemia, and only their sickly daughter survived.
The school even organized a fundraiser for them back then, and he had contributed 50 yuan from his allowance.
’If there really are gods, then why do the wicked who disrespect them get to live such splendid lives?’
“Of course I don’t believe in Buddha, but the travel guide said the temple on the hill really works—that if you pray for blessings, you’ll receive them. It’s nice to have a hopeful memento,” Jiang Ning said, lifting the Buddha Pendant with her slender fingers. She held it up in the air as a ray of sunlight broke through the clouds, and a light breeze rustled her hair. “Wear it. Whether it works or not, just think of it as something for peace of mind.”
With a soft chuckle, she pressed the Buddha Pendant into Chen Yuan’s hand.
“You got this for me?”
“Of course. But I’m not going to tell you what I wished for. Let’s go~”
…
A little after one in the afternoon, Jiang Ning and Chen Yuan went to explore one of Sanya’s famous specialty food streets. They had been hungry for a while, so they wanted to try a bit of everything they saw. By the time they were a third of the way down the street, their hands were already full of snacks.
Even though they had only bought a small portion of each, trying to eat everything that caught their eye in one go was proving to be impossible.
They began to regret buying the grilled squid. It was something they could get anywhere, so why on earth had they decided to eat it in Sanya?
“What’s that? It smells so good…”
Clutching her squid, Jiang Ning’s gaze fell upon a nearby snack stall. Snow-white glutinous rice cakes were coated in what looked like fluffy frost and served on wild pineapple leaves. They looked incredibly appealing. A sweet aroma drifted into her nose, mingled with the scent of roasted peanuts—a sweetness that was clean and crisp.
“They look like glutinous rice cakes, but I’ve never seen this kind before. The ones I’ve had were always served with brown sugar,” Chen Yuan replied, his eyes glancing over the stall.
Jiang Ning was already uncontrollably drifting toward the stall, but Chen Yuan tugged on the corner of her shirt, stopping her.
Turning her head, she looked at Chen Yuan.
“Can we buy one to try?”
“We can’t even finish what we’re holding now, and we still have that steamed sea fish to eat later…” he said helplessly.
“Just one…” Jiang Ning blinked her sparkling eyes, her gaze pleading. She shook Chen Yuan’s arm and gently bit her rosy lip. “Just one! I really want to know what it tastes like.”
She looked down at the squid in her hand. “Then I don’t want this. Let’s trade.”
“How are we supposed to trade it? This isn’t like interacting with a merchant in a video game where you can just swap inventory items.”
“I don’t know. Just figure something out, please…?”
“Fine, we’ll buy it!”
It wasn’t that Chen Yuan was being stingy; he just felt it was a shame to waste food. But his usually cool and aloof Ningning was actually being this cute and pleading with him—a first in history!
It would be too cruel of him to ignore her.
This, perhaps, was Chen Yuan’s greatest weakness: he was completely powerless against his girlfriend when she acted cute.
A few soft whines from her and his heart would just melt.
“Ma’am, what is this? How much is it?” he asked, walking up to the vendor, a woman in a colorful, patterned shirt.
“This is a Coconut Shred Rice Cake, young man! It’s super delicious and very cheap.”
“We’ll take one to try, then.”
“Alrighty! For here or to go… You should eat it now. It’s even sweeter when it’s hot!”
“Sounds good.”
Chen Yuan paid and took the still-warm Coconut Shred Rice Cake from the woman. He turned and handed it to Ningning.
“Here. Happy now?”
“Mhm!”
Jiang Ning nodded as she took it, holding it up to examine it carefully. Her delicate nose twitched. “It smells so fresh and milky.”
She parted her rosy lips and took a small bite. Instantly, the soft, smooth glutinous rice filled her mouth, bursting with the aroma of sesame and peanuts. It was delicious and refreshingly sweet.
Jiang Ning’s taste buds were instantly gratified, and her eyes lit up.
“It’s delicious. Here, you try some.” She held the treat on its pineapple leaf up to Chen Yuan’s mouth, her smile especially gentle.
Her sweet and considerate gesture made a guy in another couple walking by freeze mid-stride. He stopped walking completely, turning his head to stare intently at her.
His girlfriend, confused by his behavior, followed his gaze and immediately understood what was going on.
She rolled her eyes and gave him a sharp rap on the head.
“What’s so interesting? You’re staring your eyes out!”
The man snapped back to his senses and hurriedly apologized to his girlfriend, though his gaze remained wistful. Even after Jiang Ning had walked far into the distance, he still seemed to be in a daze.
