Chapter 169: Chapter 111: Chen Yuan Starts to Suspect, Ningning Hastily Covers Up
“But you still can’t chase them like that. It’s a major disruption to public order. I get that younger students have their idols, but they need to know where to draw the line.”
Jiangg Ning shook her head and followed Chen Yuan into the elevator. She didn’t like this kind of frenzied, almost twisted emotion. It felt unhealthy and frivolous.
“Have you never been a fan of anyone?” Chen Yuan asked curiously.
“Well, if I had to pick someone, I guess there was… back in high school. I really admired Ryunosuke Akutagawa. I even made a special trip to visit his memorial museum when I went to Japan, but that’s as far as it went.”
“Sounds vaguely familiar. The author, right?”
“That’s right.”
Chatting back and forth, the two of them walked into the elevator. Chen Yuan’s eyes fell on a girl leaning against the far wall… and he froze, stopping in his tracks.
’What a strange person to find in an elevator.’
She was dressed almost entirely in black. The only exception was the dark red Rolex cap on her head, which was embroidered with a gold logo. Her mask, jacket, jeans, and even her slippers were all a dreary gray-black. She was dressed like someone trying to shut out the world entirely.
Only her eyes were visible—and they were exceptionally beautiful, large and bright with long lashes.
The moment their eyes met, Chen Yuan was taken aback. For a second, his mind went blank. He was inexplicably hit with a wave of… familiarity.
Jiangg Yao was dumbfounded, too. She had just been staring down at the bag of fried chicken, her mouth practically watering.
The elevator doors opened.
And in walked Chen Yuan and her sister!
She stood frozen for a long moment, completely still, as if paralyzed by a spell. Her pupils constricted as a thousand thoughts flashed through her mind, chief among them an overwhelming sense of dread.
’It’s over. He’s going to find me out, isn’t he?’
’How am I going to explain this?’
’If I told him that some people in the world just happen to look identical, that our meeting was a total coincidence, and that I have absolutely no connection to Jiangg Ning… would he believe me?’
’She realized that idea would never work. Not even a three-year-old would believe it…’
’So what do I do?’
’Should I just blurt out an apology? Say something like, “It’s not what you think!”?’
’He’d probably just stare at me with a stony face and ask, “What do you mean? What is it, then?”’
They wouldn’t get three sentences in before the whole thing fell apart. Jiangg Yao couldn’t think of a single thing to say. ’It’s over,’ she thought. ’This time, it’s really, truly over.’
Despair even began to well up in her eyes.
The atmosphere was awkward and silent. Not a sound was made.
Walking behind Chen Yuan, Jiangg Ning had no idea what was happening. She was wondering why their conversation had suddenly died down, so she peeked around his shoulder to take a look.
But in that single glance, the instant her eyes met Jiangg Yao’s…
Her expression froze. In an instant, her face turned deathly pale!
A storm of emotions flickered in her eyes, panic chief among them. Jiangg Ning’s reaction was no better than her younger sister’s, but after just a few seconds, she managed to glance up at Chen Yuan’s expression.
’So weird…’
Chen Yuan thought, but he couldn’t put his finger on what was so strange.
It was rude to stare, so Chen Yuan schooled his expression, turned, and calmly pressed the button for the ninth floor. He was still trying to place that nagging sense of familiarity.
Jiangg Ning’s eyes were wide, her pale face conveying a thousand messages as she looked at her sister. Just then, it dawned on Jiangg Yao: she was wearing a mask and a hat!
’That scared the life out of me!’
In her panic, she had completely forgotten.
Just moments before, Jiangg Yao had lost even the will to struggle, feeling as hopeless as if she’d fallen through a hole in the ice. But now, she was alive again. It was as if the sun had burst through the clouds, and she had taken a step back from the gates of hell.
The sheer relief of surviving the close call made her eyes well up with tears.
She looked at her sister, her expression shifting from terror to teary-eyed in less than half a second.
The two of them began a silent conversation, conveying a wealth of information by blinking, frowning, and trading frantic glances!
Not a single word or syllable was uttered, yet Yaoyao perfectly understood everything her sister was saying. If you could somehow decrypt their silent communication, it would undoubtedly translate to:
“What are you doing?! Why are you here? We agreed one of us would be with Chen Yuan while the other stayed put in the hotel!”
Jiangg Yao bit her lip, squeezed her eyes shut emphatically, gave a slight shake of her head, and made a complex expression with her mouth before lifting the bag in her hand slightly.
Her sister understood perfectly.
Her silent reply was: “I didn’t want to! I was so hungry I was getting dizzy. I felt like I was going to starve to death in the suite if I didn’t get something to eat. I never imagined I’d run into you two coming back.”
“There were tons of fans outside. We had to wait for a while, so of course we drove back to the hotel quickly once we could. You should have thought of that,” Jiangg Ning’s menacing eyebrow-arch seemed to say.
“How was I supposed to know? You think I’m a GPS satellite or something? Besides, you weren’t answering my texts!” Jiangg Yao’s lowered head was the very picture of grievance.
Their communication was completely seamless. In wartime, they would have made excellent spies; one look was all it took for the other to understand everything.
While this encrypted call was in progress, Chen Yuan suddenly turned his head and glanced at the “woman in black.”
The two sisters were simultaneously scared out of their wits.
The elevator wasn’t particularly large; in fact, it was rather narrow. High-end hotels often aim for this specific size, believing it creates a more comfortable atmosphere for guests, as elevators that are too large or too small can be unsettling.
Some people are especially sensitive to it.
Jiangg Ning quickly turned her head, pretending to read the “Hotel Information” notice on the wall. Jiangg Yao, on the other hand, was flustered. Her eyes met Chen Yuan’s for a split second before darting away, but she could feel it distinctly! His gaze was fixed on her, and it wasn’t moving.
