Chapter 92: Chapter 66: Sisters’ Quarrel, Jiang Yao Slams the Door and Gives Her Sister the Silent Treatment
“I’m home—”
Jiangg Ning came in, gracefully kicking off her high heels. Her delicate feet slid into a pair of slippers, and she instantly felt them enveloped by the soft, plush lining.
Compared to the harsh confines of her heels, this was pure bliss.
“…”
Jiangg Ning flipped on the entryway light as she came in. A soft glow spilled into the room, but the living room remained dim. A hazy figure was sitting on the sofa, seemingly shifting to glance in her direction.
They didn’t speak, remaining silent.
“Why are the lights off? I can’t see a thing.”
With a CLICK, Jiangg Ning switched on the living room lights as well. The sight of Jiangg Yao sitting on the sofa, her eyes red and swollen from crying, greeted her.
Her face was pale, her expression dejected, and the floor around her was littered with crumpled tissues.
Jiangg Ning stared at her, stunned, for a moment. Her cheerful mood vanished.
Jiangg Ning tiptoed over, set down her purse, and kept glancing back at her sister. After a moment, she walked over and sat down on the sofa beside her.
“You… you didn’t come back with Chen Yuan?” Jiangg Yao’s voice was hoarse as if something was caught in her throat.
“No. We had dinner together, but his friend had an emergency, so I dropped him off near Dongpu Lake.”
“Oh.”
Jiangg Yao coldly turned her face away, giving her sister the silent treatment, stubbornly refusing to say another word.
’In her despair, she thought it might have been better if Jiangg Ning had brought Chen Yuan back. That way, he would have realized they lived in the same complex, the truth would have come out, and when Jiangg Ning confronted her, she could have just laid all her cards on the table.’
’There’s nothing to be afraid of.’
’Since her sister had already set her mind on pursuing Chen Yuan, what crime had she committed?’
’The two of them were just doing the same thing, making the same mistake.’
In fact, Jiangg Yao resented Jiangg Ning for being so fickle and indecisive. If she hadn’t broken up with him in the first place, would things have gotten this complicated?
’It was just fair competition, that’s all.’
“Don’t cry, Yaoyao…” Jiangg Ning gently took her hand and comforted her in a low voice, “I know you can’t bear to part with your sister.”
“Hah.” Jiangg Yao let out a cold laugh.
“It’s okay. I haven’t officially started dating Chen Yuan yet; we just had dinner. Even though I’m sure about my feelings now, I’ll never neglect you, no matter what happens. We’re still the best of sisters, aren’t we?”
Jiangg Ning actually thought Yaoyao was upset because she’d found a boyfriend and they wouldn’t be able to stick together every day anymore, that someone else was going to take half of her sister away.
She thought that’s why she felt so let down and was crying her eyes out.
In reality, it wasn’t like that at all.
All Jiangg Yao cared about was her sister stealing Chen Yuan… and nothing else.
“Easy for you to say! You were the one who broke up with him, and now you’re doing this. I tried to talk you out of it, but you wouldn’t listen,” Jiangg Yao said, despairingly shaking off her sister’s hand and frowning deeply. She glared at Jiangg Ning, who felt an immense pressure, almost as if she were looking in a mirror. “I don’t get what you’re thinking at all!”
“I… what I’m thinking is simple. I wasn’t clear about my own feelings before, but I am now.”
“No! What’s done is done! Now you’re turning back to find your own happiness! That’s so despicable, I hate it!”
Jiangg Yao shot to her feet. Having thrown her tantrum, she stormed off toward the secondary bedroom without another glance.
SLAM! The door shut.
The force of it sent a strong gust of wind into Jiangg Ning’s face, and she squeezed her eyes shut.
「A moment later.」
Jiangg Ning let out a faint sigh.
She knew her sister had a much fierier temper than her own and always spoke her mind, never hiding her resentment. She also knew that going back to Chen Yuan to get back together wasn’t a good look.
’But it’s not wrong to follow your heart, is it?’
Jiangg Ning had wanted to ask her sister for Chen Yuan’s Green Bubble contact to see if he’d gotten home…
’Looks like that’s impossible now.’
’Oh well, I’ll just call him.’
…
Just as Chen Yuan reached his front door, his phone started vibrating in his pocket. He answered it as he opened the door.
It was past ten at night.
That guy Liu Nan was really something else. Chen Yuan had originally planned to spend a little more time with Jiangg Ning, but while they were in the car, Liu Nan started frantically texting him, saying he was in trouble.
So, Chen Yuan had to rush over.
But when he got to the park by Dongpu Lake, he searched for over ten minutes and made several calls but couldn’t find him.
Finally, he used the location sharing feature on Green Bubble and discovered that Liu Nan was furtively hiding in some obscure corner. The spot was so well-hidden you wouldn’t see him even if you walked right past, let alone if you were actively searching.
He was completely shrouded in darkness.
“What are you, an assassin? Who are you hiding here to ambush?” he had asked, bewildered.
“Shh… Someone’s looking for me. I have to hide.”
“Who?”
“I’ll tell you later. Let’s get out of here first, we’ll grab a cab. Oh, right, let me borrow your jacket!” Liu Nan said, and without waiting for an answer, he came forward, pulled off Chen Yuan’s jacket, and wrapped it around his neck like a scarf.
All the while, he kept looking around, though Chen Yuan had no idea what he was looking for.
He might have been fine without the jacket covering his face, but with this “disguise,” Liu Nan drew constant stares from passersby on the street, turning every head they passed.
Chen Yuan had no idea what was going through his head…
Chen Yuan was speechless at his friend’s paranoia. Once they were in the taxi, Liu Nan let out a long sigh of relief and finally explained why he had been hiding.
It turned out that around eight o’clock, he’d tried hitting on several pretty girls from other schools. Even after getting cursed out, his resolve hadn’t wavered, and he’d picked out a new target.
The girl had long legs, a slender waist, and was wearing a trench coat that showed off her fair thighs. Her face was especially lovely.
Liu Nan’s eyes had nearly popped out of his head. When he saw that the girl was alone, he immediately decided to go and chat her up.
The girl readily agreed. She had a great personality, and the two of them took pictures at various spots in the park, chatting happily the whole time.
Liu Nan gradually grew bolder, expressing his strong attraction to her. While taking photos, he even pretended to be a professional, asking the girl to strike various seductive poses.
He could tell she was a very open person; she played along with all his flirty comments, and her every word seemed to feign resistance while inviting more.
Liu Nan’s internal assessment: ’A total “flask.”’
’Such a great body, not bad looking, and a fiery personality—if she became his girlfriend, wouldn’t he be walking on air?’
Liu Nan was lost in his fantasy.
But just a few minutes later, as he tentatively reached for the girl’s hand, a burly man, about six-foot-two and nearly 220 pounds, appeared by his side…
While describing it to Chen Yuan, Liu Nan slapped his thigh and said aggrievedly, “I’m not exaggerating at all! He grabbed me by the collar and hauled me up, and even said he was going to get people to mess me up!”
“And then you ran?”
“What else was I supposed to do?”
“You’re really something else, man.”
Chen Yuan had to hand it to him. Of everyone in their dorm, Liu Nan had the most unpredictable personality. Calling his bro to come rescue him in the middle of the night—only he would pull something like that.
He stepped into his home.
He put the phone to his ear, and a question came through the receiver.
“Hello, Chen Yuan, did you make it to the school?”
“I went, but I’m already back. I’m at my front door now.”
“Huh?”
On the other end, Jiangg Ning sounded surprised and confused.
“What’s wrong? I dropped Liu Nan off at school. It was nothing, just him messing around, so I got home pretty quickly.”
“Oh, I see.”
Neither of them knew that they were separated by just two walls.
Across the hall.
Jiangg Ning and Chen Yuan were both sitting in their respective living rooms, lights on overhead.
The only difference was that Chen Yuan was sprawled comfortably on his sofa, while Jiangg Ning sat primly, her delicate toes pointed, allowing a slipper to slide naturally from her foot to the floor.
If the phone company knew about this, they’d have to sigh with gratitude: ’Without you two, we’d starve…’
Calling each other from five or six meters away!
It was only then that Jiangg Ning realized from Chen Yuan’s words that he didn’t live in the school dorms.
“Well, I was just calling to see if you’d handled things. That’s all.”
“Okay. You should get some rest.”
“Good night,” Jiangg Ning whispered, her phone pressed to her lips.
“Good night.”
After hanging up, Jiangg Ning felt a surprising reluctance to let the moment go. She held her phone for a while, savoring the feeling, then covered her mouth and chuckled softly.
’Love really is a magical thing.’
’It can so easily create ripples in one’s heart.’
In the living room, Jiangg Ning lifted her head and glanced at the closed door of the secondary bedroom. She wanted to get Chen Yuan’s Green Bubble contact from her sister so they could chat… but if she went over now, they would definitely start fighting again.
Resigned, Jiangg Ning bit her lip, shrugged, and turned her head to look out at the ever-darkening night sky.
’A perfect day. And from now on, I don’t need to write in my diary anymore.’
’Or if I do, it’ll be a relationship progress journal, documenting the journey from ambiguity to getting back together for good… Hmm, that’s a good idea!’
…
「12:32 a.m.」
The apartment was silent, with almost no sound at all. The living room light was off, and the sofa, coffee table, and a pile of things were shrouded in shadow, as if the very air had frozen solid.
Jiangg Ning was fast asleep, her eyes shut tight, her chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. She looked utterly peaceful.
She had had a busy day and had also resolved her worries. The moment she lay down in bed, she felt exceptionally relieved and fell into a deep sleep not long after.
But in the secondary bedroom next door…
The desk lamp was on, but Jiangg Yao wasn’t the least bit sleepy. Her behavior could only be described as bizarre.
At this late hour, she was actually putting on makeup. She sat before the mirror, outlining her eyebrows, applying eyeliner, swiping on a rosy lip gloss, and even combing her hair perfectly.
After ten-odd minutes of applying a light layer of makeup, Jiangg Yao looked at her reflection in the mirror and closed her makeup palette with satisfaction.
She flopped onto the bed next to her computer chair, picked up her phone, and started a voice call to Chen Yuan on Green Bubble.
That’s right. Jiangg Yao couldn’t stand her sister’s actions from today. She couldn’t even think about sleeping; the moment she closed her eyes, her mind was filled with intimate images of the two of them together.
And her? She was just watching from behind, all alone, with no one to care about her.
The light only illuminated the space where her sister and Chen Yuan stood side by side, leaving her shrouded in darkness.
’On what grounds!?’
’She had given so much for Chen Yuan, she loved him so much! She was the one who confessed, the one who tried to make him stay.’
’What had Jiangg Ning done? Why did she give her own boyfriend away?!’
A cold glint flashed in Jiangg Yao’s eyes.
’Since her sister was going to be ruthless, she couldn’t be blamed for being unjust. If it was going to be a fight, then she would fight with everything she had.’
She tried calling on Green Bubble once. No answer.
She tried again.
This time, after ten-odd seconds, just as Jiangg Yao was starting to lose hope, the call connected.
“Hello…?”
A lazy, magnetic voice came through the receiver. It was the kind of voice you could tell was coming from under the covers, still fuzzy with sleep.
Jiangg Yao’s heart skipped a beat, and an uncontrollable look of infatuation filled her eyes…
“Little Master…” Her voice trembled slightly, seemingly filled with infinite grievance as she tried to control it. “I miss you. I miss you so, so much.”
“You’re not asleep yet?” Chen Yuan asked, surprised.
“No, I can’t sleep. I…”
“What’s wrong? Just tell me. I’m listening.”
“I want to come see you.”
“Now?”
“Now!”
Jiangg Yao nodded emphatically, pouting. Just from saying those few words, the rims of her eyes began to turn red again…
