Chapter 111: Chapter 99: Only the Past Life, Not the Present! The Face of the Great Venerable Red Flame Thunder Resonator
“Su Chen?” Pang Xingwen frowned slightly. “Why don’t we just get started? Why do we have to wait for him?”
“That’s not a good idea. He’s Judge Xia’s student, after all.” Chu Yunze shook his head.
“Hah. Judge Xia has plenty of students. This one might not last long,” Pang Xingwen said nonchalantly. “I heard he’s a refugee who falsified his records. He’s probably narrow-minded and too scared to associate with us.”
“Don’t say things like that again. Whatever is in his file is what it is,” Chu Yunze frowned. “A Dual Red Gold Talent is worth recruiting. The stronger we are, the higher the chance we can get the Judicial Court to make an exception.”
“If Zhu Xuan wasn’t in this batch, Su Chen might have even been able to get the Judicial Court to make an exception and add another Core Seed slot.”
In this year’s group, Su Chen’s value was higher than almost anyone else’s.
“Hah…” Pang Xingwen’s expression turned gloomy.
As they were speaking, Chu Yunze paused. He looked down to open his virtual screen and couldn’t help but smile. “He’s here.”
But after reading the full message, his smile faded.
…
’This world is getting more and more familiar…’ Su Chen thought as he stepped out of the hovercar. A slender, graceful waitress immediately came up to greet him.
She was dressed gorgeously, but not revealingly. Her form-fitting skirt reached her knees, accentuating her smooth, straight calves.
The decor here was lavish, and the people coming and going all appeared to be sharply dressed in suits.
Following his guide, Su Chen went straight to the top floor. As he pushed open the heavy door to the private room, pairs of eyes turned to fix on him.
“Brother Su!” someone shouted, instantly grabbing Su Chen’s attention. It was a young man with a frivolous air and a long, narrow face.
He eagerly approached. “We’ve been waiting for you.”
“And you are?” Su Chen asked, confused.
“I am Pang Xingwen…” He offered Su Chen a glass filled with a swirling red liquid. Full of enthusiasm, he waved for someone to close the door to the room.
He gestured toward a seemingly awkward, fresh-faced young man and introduced him to Su Chen. “This is Meng Qi.”
“A pleasure to meet you.” Meng Qi seemed flustered, nodding his head repeatedly.
Su Chen nodded in return.
“That one over there is Chu Yunze, the one who invited you,” Pang Xingwen said, pointing at a flashy man walking toward them. “This whole place is his family’s property.”
“Brother Su, I’ve long admired you,” Chu Yunze said with a smile, adding a clarification, “It’s not my family’s. It’s a joint venture between a few families. Mine just holds a share.”
A local powerhouse in Ying Feng. Su Chen filed the information away.
“As for the others, I won’t introduce them one by one. They’re from various cities, basically all Canyin Level,” Pang Xingwen said casually. The others didn’t look too pleased.
Su Chen, however, just smiled and acknowledged them. “Su Chen. A pleasure to meet you all.”
Only then did the expressions on the crowd relax slightly.
Pang Xingwen sneered inwardly but said with a smile, “With this, all four Red Gold Level talents of this batch are here.”
’Four Red Gold Talents? They’re all here?’
Su Chen was surprised. He hadn’t even entered the Judicial Court yet, and already the vast majority of its potential core members had been intercepted.
“Brother Chu, Younger Brother Su is here now, so where’s Boss Chu?” Pang Xingwen urged.
Chu Yunze frowned slightly and placated him, “Don’t be impatient. We’ve barely exchanged a word.”
With that, the party tentatively began. Many people came over to chat with Su Chen, while the crowd around Pang Xingwen thinned out a bit.
After greeting a few more people, Su Chen squeezed his way over to Chu Yunze and asked in a low voice, “Brother Chu, what about the Fog Nightmare Pearl?”
Chu Yunze forced a smile. “I’ve already had it prepared. I’ll have someone bring it to you when you leave.”
“Just give it to me now,” Su Chen explained. “I’m worried I’ll get drunk later and forget about it.”
Chu Yunze gave him a deep look, then could only say, “Alright. I’ll have someone bring it over right now.”
Chu Yunze wasn’t trying to trick him; someone quickly delivered a metal box.
Su Chen opened a crack to peek inside. It was a grayish-white pearl the size of a lychee, with a grayish-white mist swirling within.
“Thank you for your generous gift, Brother Chu.” He took the pearl out and tucked it away.
“Tsk tsk, why did Brother Su get a special gift?” Pang Xingwen sidled over, his tone half-joking and half-serious. “What, don’t I deserve a gift?”
Chu Yunze shot him a glance, but before he could speak, the door to the room was pushed open again.
Everyone instinctively looked over, and Chu Yunze stood up as well.
Not wanting to stand out, Su Chen also rose to his feet.
A figure strode in. His features weren’t particularly striking, but his calm expression gave him a natural air of authority.
“Boss Chu, you’re finally here!” Pang Xingwen called out with feigned warmth.
’So this is Zhu Xuan?’
Su Chen sized him up, faintly sensing a threat from him. His strength was considerable.
Zhu Xuan glanced at Pang Xingwen and gave a slight nod before his gaze shifted to Su Chen, where it lingered for a moment before moving on.
“Sorry to keep you all waiting,” he said, scanning the room.
’To think he was cultivated by a Subordinate City. He’s really something,’ Su Chen marveled to himself. From his earlier conversations, he had already gotten a general idea about this person.
He came from a city called Jin Yu, which was known for producing a certain type of metal. He had been hidden away for many years by the Fourth Chief Judge and was only sent over today.
As for his profession and other information, nothing was known, but rumors said he possessed a Top-tier Profession.
He had arrived in Ying Feng three months ago and, in that short time, had won over the local powerhouse Chu Yunze, as well as many of Ying Feng’s younger generation.
Even many who had already joined the Judicial Court were prepared to follow him in secret.
“Not at all, Boss Chu…” the crowd chorused in response.
Many were seeing Zhu Xuan for the first time, and after exchanging just a few words, their eyes filled with admiration.
After a few rounds of drinks, Zhu Xuan made a point of coming over to Su Chen, saying with some emotion, “A while ago, after I heard about you, I specifically told Yunze that he absolutely had to invite you.”
“Alas…” Su Chen feigned helplessness. “Brother Chu exploited my weakness, so I had no choice but to come.”
Chu Yunze let out a soft sigh.
Zhu Xuan’s expression tightened for a moment, but then he smiled again. “Yunze always has his ways.”
His desire to talk seemed to have diminished considerably. After saying a few more words, he walked away.
After waiting a little longer, Su Chen got up to take his leave. His departure was met with surprised looks, but no one tried to stop him.
Chu Yunze hesitated for a moment, but still rose and said, “I’ll have someone see you out.”
“You offer a warm welcome only to get the cold shoulder, and you even gave him something for it.”
Watching Su Chen leave, Pang Xingwen sneered from within the core clique. “With people like him, you should just show your strength and make them submit. Being too polite just makes them get cocky.”
“He’s just unwilling to follow me. There’s nothing wrong with trying to stay on good terms,” Zhu Xuan said, shaking his head, his gaze indifferent.
“But Old Chu said he might also be able to compete for a Core Seed spot,” Pang Xingwen said pointedly.
Zhu Xuan’s tone remained level. “The Judicial Court won’t make an exception for him.”
…
Outside the main entrance, the person who had brought him here had already started the hovercar.
The driver was the only one seeing him off. Su Chen sat in the back, and his previously hazy-looking eyes sharpened, becoming clear.
The scene from the private room replayed in his mind like a movie.
’That Pang Xingwen… he was outwardly warm, but I could faintly sense some hostility from him. I don’t know where it’s coming from…’
’Chu Yunze handled himself appropriately. He seems like a relatively normal person.’
’Meng Qi’s attitude fits what you’d expect from someone coming from a small city to a big one. But he has a Red Gold Talent. Didn’t he receive preferential treatment in his own city? Strange…’
’As for Zhu Xuan…’ Su Chen thought of the evening’s main attraction. ’He didn’t seem arrogant and was able to get along well with the others.’
’After tonight, a lot of people probably have a good impression of him.’
’Although he acted a bit cold toward me later, I did reject his recruitment offer. That kind of reaction is normal.’
Putting a mental question mark over Pang Xingwen, Su Chen turned his thoughts to the conditions for becoming a Saint.
’Help one hundred people… I can only help if others are in need. I wonder if forcing my help on them counts…’
