Chapter 151: Chapter 112: Former Ruins, Challenger’s Arena (3)
’Who the hell invented these potions… Training with this stuff is pure evil,’ Su Chen cursed to himself, but then he had a sudden realization.
The Judicial Court was allowing the seeds to form cliques, which in a sense, was also a way of binding the various major and minor powers of Ying Feng.
If you didn’t align with the Judicial Court, you had to align with the Security Department.
“All done…” Gu Bing and No. Zero worked together, placing the Potions into a display cabinet.
After crouching to close the box, she looked up at Su Chen. For some reason, her father’s words came to mind, and her gaze shifted away as she asked hesitantly, “Is there anything else you need?”
“Hmm…” Su Chen thought for a moment. “Can you get your hands on any Secret Technique Energy Crystals?”
“Secret Technique Energy Crystals?” Gu Bing frowned, taking a moment to recall what they were. “Things from the Engraving Department… that’s a bit difficult.”
Gu Bing was frank and laid it out clearly. “Price is one factor, but the real issue is the low production volume. The crystals are very useful, so they’re basically all claimed before they’re even produced.”
“I estimate I might be able to get one, just barely.”
“Just one…” Su Chen shook his head, deciding not to press the Gu Family. “Never mind, I don’t need it for now.”
’This isn’t urgent anyway. There’s still some time before I advance to Tier Three, so there’s no need to squeeze the Gu Family dry.’
’I need three Secret Technique Energy Crystals and three types of Thunder Cores. Together, those two things will cost no less than ten million gold.’
Gu Bing breathed a secret sigh of relief, though she also felt a hint of resignation.
After watching Gu Bing leave, Su Chen returned to the basement. Several days had passed since the Judicial Court assessment.
He’d been busy these past few days, however, and hadn’t found the time for a proper session, only managing to train in scattered bursts. He felt like his bones were rusting over.
But before that, there was one more thing he had to do.
’I wonder what ability this gives…’ Su Chen thought, looking at the [Drug Tester] Professional Ability he was about to select on his status panel.
This Professional Ability was a real pushover. The moment it was registered, it surrendered without a fight.
The words “Acquire Profession” dissolved into a stream of light, and Su Chen immediately sensed a subtle change in his body. It wasn’t intense; it felt like a pair of soft, small hands massaging him all over, even penetrating his skin and his very flesh.
“Hiss—this is the first time acquiring a Professional Ability has felt this good…” Su Chen suppressed the urge to moan, let out a long sigh, and looked at his status panel—
[Drug Tester acquisition successful. Gained Professional Ability—Strong Metabolism: The effects of potions on the user are increased by 25%.]
“Oh?” Su Chen’s eyes lit up. He hadn’t expected much from this Professional Ability, so this was a pleasant surprise.
’Increased potion effects… that’s the same as increased training efficiency…’
As the tingling, pleasant numbness in his body gradually faded, he found himself reluctant to let the feeling go.
After a light stretch, Su Chen retrieved the Mysterious Spirit, Black Water, and Glazed Blood from the Potion Storage Chamber and walked into the Gravity Chamber.
He activated the five-times gravity setting and the Spirit Realm Instrument.
He started with the Black Water. The substance looked like ink, and Su Chen hesitated for a long moment before downing it. It was cool and tasteless at first, but it quickly morphed into a bone-chilling cold that surged through his body.
“HISS—” Su Chen shivered, then opened the Mysterious Spirit and downed it as well. The pale red liquid stung his tongue. It was produced by the Broken Nether Flower, which grew only in a specific Illusion Realm. A searing heat rushed to his head, turning his forehead crimson.
’Ice and fire at once… Fuck me…’
Last, he downed the Glazed Blood. Under its stimulation, the effects of the first two Potions became even more distinct: his body grew colder, while his head grew hotter.
He settled into a stance, and electric arcs began to crackle across his skin as he fell into his familiar training rhythm.
However, with the combination of multiple support measures and his newly enhanced Talent, Su Chen was surprised to discover that his body was burning through the Potions at an extremely rapid rate.
After a mere seven or eight hours, the effects of the Mysterious Spirit had already worn off. The Black Water was still active, but not for much longer.
“At this rate…” Su Chen, bare-chested, emerged from the Gravity Chamber and went to the Potion Storage Chamber to grab two more Potions. ’Excluding the Glazed Blood, if I train at full tilt, I’ll consume three vials of each Support Potion per day. That means I’ll need ninety vials of each of the two kinds.’
’I’ll have to ask the Gu Family for a bit more…’ Su Chen felt a little embarrassed. ’But ninety vials is just the theoretical number. I can’t possibly train around the clock. I figure getting another ten vials of each should be about right.’
’The Gu Family can still handle this for now, but once I advance to Tier Three, the cost of Potions alone will increase tenfold. You really can’t do anything without money…’ Su Chen hadn’t truly grasped it until now, but doing the math left him speechless.
’Next, I’ll have to seriously start looking for some more backers.’
He trained straight through to the next morning, pushing himself to the point of complete exhaustion.
“So satisfying…” Su Chen dragged his exhausted body out of the Gravity Chamber, his eyelids so heavy they felt like they were at war.
He was just about to fall into a long, blissful sleep when Ming Lin came to visit.
“What happened to you? You look completely wrung out.” Ming Lin jumped in surprise when Su Chen opened the door, his tone already familiar.
“Trained all night. I was just about to get some rest,” Su Chen said, his tone clearly hinting that he wanted his guest to leave.
“Then my timing is really off,” Ming Lin said with a resigned sigh. “But I just found something out. It’s about the Core Seeds, and I came to tell you immediately.”
“Oh?” Su Chen rubbed the bridge of his nose, his curiosity piqued. He stepped aside to let him in.
“Sigh… No wonder the Chief Judge wants to reform the Core Seed system. You have no idea what kind of ’brilliant’ scheme those guys came up with to deal with the challenger platform,” Ming Lin said as he walked, his tone laced with anger:
“They’re planning to hoard the challenge slots by having their own people challenge each other. That way, they can hold on to their positions as Core Seeds.”
