Chapter 152: Chapter 112: Challenger’s Arena (4)
“How unsophisticated.” Su Chen shook his head and plopped down onto the sofa. “They must have lost their minds. To become the Chief Judge, you have to subdue everyone. How can a method like this win public support?”
“Exactly.” Ming Lin couldn’t agree more. “Such petty tricks. Do they really think the Chief Judge wouldn’t have anticipated this?”
“How so?” Su Chen’s interest was piqued.
“This announcement won’t be made public until this afternoon. My teacher told me, so don’t tell anyone else.” Ming Lin lowered his voice, using the secret to build a closer bond between them.
“The Chief Judge is going to implement a ranking system. Of the six Core Seeds, four are currently eligible to compete. Through a series of round-robin challenges, anyone who can defeat the other three will become number one, earning the title ’Chief Seed’.”
Su Chen’s eye twitched. ’So the real plan is finally revealed. This is the knockout punch in the whole combination.’
Previously, even though there were only four Core Seeds, the path to becoming Chief Judge was long and complex. It wasn’t unheard of for some Core Seeds to be eliminated along the way.
Ostensibly, everyone had the same chance, but the introduction of a ranking system would change things completely.
Chief Seed, Chief Judge… both start with “Chief.” Say it enough times, and who will be able to distinguish one from the other?
This in itself was a way of accumulating influence.
“Ha…” Su Chen couldn’t help but laugh. “Now, the subordinates of the other Core Seeds won’t be able to stay put. The powers behind them will force them into a crucible, a fight to determine the strongest and seize the ’Chief’ title.”
“Exactly…” Ming Lin nodded. ’It’s so much easier talking to an intelligent person.’ “This is an overt scheme. All eyes will be on the ’Chief’ position. They’ll have no choice but to compete, no choice but to snatch it.”
“To be honest, the ranking system hasn’t even been announced, and some of the people around me are already getting restless. I’m afraid it’ll get much more intense after the announcement this afternoon.”
He sounded like he was being self-deprecating, but Su Chen could sense his confidence.
Ming Lin brought up another matter. “That guy, Zhu Xuan? The power base he gathered has already lost thirty percent of its members. It’s like adding oil to a blazing fire—all sizzle, no substance. His foundation is unstable. He may seem magnificent, but he’ll crumble at the first push.”
The challenge system had already made the Core Seed positions less secure. Once a Chief Seed was established, the importance of the other Core Seeds would diminish, and the influence they had gathered would inevitably scatter like sand in the wind.
Su Chen wasn’t particularly concerned. After all, only the Gu Family was backing him at the moment. He speculated,
“I predict that, in time, the challenge system will be expanded. Not only will the Core Seed positions no longer be permanent, but the same will apply to the regular members and ordinary seeds of the Inner Courtyard…”
Ming Lin froze, giving Su Chen a deep look. He had been focused solely on the Core Seeds, his own perspective not reaching that far. “In that case, the Judicial Court’s entire development system would become fluid. No one would be able to let their guard down.”
“It’s a shame you’re not yet Tier Three, otherwise I’d really love to have a sparring match with you,” Ming Lin said with a hint of regret. “The four of us are fairly well-established, but there are quite a few people with their eyes on you and the other newcomer.”
“It’ll take you two anywhere from half a year to a year to reach Tier Three. When that time comes, I expect we’ll see a clash of titans. You should be able to secure your position as a Core Seed, though.”
“As for Zhu Xuan,” Ming Lin said, shaking his head, “he’ll likely fall from his position for a time.”
No matter how great his Talent, it’s hard for that to translate directly into combat prowess. He just advanced and is still unfamiliar with his class, so it’s perfectly normal for some of the veteran seeds to seize the opportunity to challenge him.
As for Su Chen, the combat strength he displayed during his assessment was so absurd that people are still trying to figure out what his class is.
His chances of holding onto his position are quite high.
Su Chen glanced at Ming Lin and chuckled. “The way I see it, you already have that Chief Seed position in the palm of your hand.”
“I can only give it my all,” Ming Lin said with a smile.
Having “leaked” this news to Su Chen and further strengthened their rapport, Ming Lin took his leave, telling him to rest well.
’This Chief Judge is certainly conscientious…’ Su Chen thought to himself as he walked upstairs.
’Then again, maybe it’s because the four established Core Seeds and the factions they’d gathered had become a threat to him. They could also easily become entangled with the major powers of Ying Feng, so he needed a way to break them apart.’
Su Chen lay down on his bed and drifted into a deep sleep. ’Still, I shouldn’t always assume people’s motives are so sinister…’
