Chapter 171: Chapter 118: Promoted Again! Cyan Thunder Master! Nemesis?
[Furious Thunder Wind Armor has evolved into—Thunder Undying Armor: Can absorb power from external attacks and convert it into its own source.]
[Wind-Thunder Concealment has evolved into—Azure Thunder Divine Movement: Aided by azure thunder, you can burst with extreme speed for a short period.]
[Wind and Thunder Envoy has a similar affinity with the new Professional Ability and has fused into—Cyan Thunder Master: Within a certain area, your own abilities are greatly enhanced and you can suppress targets.]
A long time passed before the metamorphosis finally ended, but the lingering pain had yet to fade. Su Chen didn’t want to so much as lift a finger.
After another long while, the pain gradually subsided. In its place was a burgeoning Life Force and a sense of power coursing through every part of his body.
He leaped to his feet, hitting the ceiling of the Gravity Chamber with a THUD. As he clenched his fists, a series of sharp CRACKS echoed from his bones.
He gave his status panel a customary glance. The metamorphosis this time was powerful. [Azure Thunder Cloud Collapse] could be charged up, and the system even noted that it could easily backfire, which spoke volumes about its strength.
The Undying Armor not only provided defense but could also absorb an enemy’s power, and the Divine Movement allowed him to burst with incredible speed. Both were excellent.
’But why does it feel like my Wind Element was swallowed up?’ A deep cyan arc of electricity flashed across his hand as Su Chen mused to himself. ’Or maybe they were fused together?’
’As long as it’s strong enough…’ Su Chen wasn’t too concerned. The new ability, [Cyan Thunder Master], however, piqued his curiosity.
He made a brief attempt. The moment the thought formed in his mind, a seething power erupted from deep within his body, causing all the lights in the Gravity Chamber to flicker.
Even without fully entering the Cyan Thunder Master state, Su Chen had a general idea of how it worked. In this state, he could control all the Thunder Element within a certain area.
For now, however, this domain only had a range of about three meters.
’Liu Chen is far weaker than I am now…’
He dispelled the ability; he’d have to pay for repairs if he broke the Gravity Chamber. His benchmark for comparison had already shifted from Zhou Xian to Liu Chen.
That guy had Top-tier Professions for both Tier One and Tier Two, giving him a powerful foundation. But for Tier Three, he had played it safe, choosing only an Upper-tier Profession.
Even though Liu Chen’s profession was in its later stages of development, Su Chen felt that in a head-on fight, the man would be no match for him.
’It’s not just because of the strength of a Top-tier Profession, but also the gradual accumulation from the Body Refining Technique.’
Su Chen couldn’t help but recall that when he had a Tier One Top-level Profession, he was no match for an ordinary Tier Two Professional.
But now, having just advanced to Tier Three, most Tier Three Professionals were likely no longer his match. Only the absolute best of them would stand a chance.
’As for risky business like fighting people above my tier, it’s better to avoid that. A good old-fashioned steamrolling is much more satisfying.’
He tidied himself up and went upstairs for a shower. Water beaded on his skin, and with a slight shake of his body, it all evaporated into a fine mist, leaving him completely dry and clean.
Before bed, he messaged Gu Bing, telling him to start preparing Tier Three Support Potions. A while had passed since Liu Chen’s death, and with no one suspecting him, it was time to start gathering various resources for Tier Three.
Gu Bing was clearly shocked but quickly agreed.
He couldn’t help but think, ’Tier Three Support Potions… I’ll be consuming five to six million gold a month. That’s terrifying. The Gu Family will probably struggle to keep up…’
Su Chen woke up early the next morning, feeling refreshed and full of energy.
“I need some food. I’m going to feast!”
Perhaps because he had just undergone a metamorphosis, his appetite was voracious. He had an entire table laden with food delivered from the cafeteria.
However, he was only halfway through his meal when Ming Lin showed up at his door.
“Wow, you’ve got quite an appetite today.” Ming Lin, who was already quite friendly with him, couldn’t hide his surprise as he walked in and saw the table overflowing with food.
“Have some?” Su Chen gestured for him to sit. Ming Lin visited him from time to time; their relationship was fairly good.
“I’ll pass.” Ming Lin waved his hand dismissively. “I don’t share your hearty appetite.”
“What’s wrong? Still haven’t caught anyone?” Su Chen shoved a large piece of roasted meat into his mouth. The skin was crisp and the meat was tender. The moment it hit his stomach, his powerful digestive system converted it into a warm current that flowed into his body, nourishing his recently transformed cells.
Being a Core Seed wasn’t just an empty title; they had to get things done sometimes. Their management skills and ways of thinking were all demonstrated through concrete events.
“Don’t get me started. The people from the Liu Family are being real scumbags. They’ve used Liu Chen’s death to expand their family’s influence by at least thirty percent…” Ming Lin complained. “And we’re supposed to be catching the killer? The Liu Family probably wishes Liu Chen could come back to life just to die all over again.”
“We’ve caught a good number of the Deceitful God’s Followers and their outer circle members, but it’s the same old problem. The outer circle members don’t know much, and we can’t pry a word out of the true Believers…”
“You didn’t come here just to complain, did you?” Su Chen didn’t seem to care. The whole incident had started with Liu Chen’s death, but now, his death itself was no longer the most important part.
That’s how it was with many things. Once set in motion, not even the instigators could control the direction events would take.
“Not exactly. I’m here to invite you to a good show,” Ming Lin said with a cryptic smile. “Zhu Xuan succeeded.”
“Succeeded at what?” Su Chen froze, looking baffled.
Seeing his news fall flat, Ming Lin narrowed his eyes. Unsure if Su Chen was faking it, he continued, “Zhu Xuan has advanced to become a Tier Three Professional. And he got a Top-tier Profession. He succeeded.”
“Oh, that’s what you meant.” It dawned on Su Chen. He had been so busy with his own affairs that he’d almost forgotten about it. “He’s pretty impressive, then,” he commented. “Advancing to Tier Three so quickly. His development level must have already been in the later stages during the assessment.”
Seeing Su Chen’s still-placid reaction, Ming Lin wondered to himself, ’Is this guy just that good at acting, or does he genuinely not care?’
Almost everyone in the Judicial Court knew that before even joining, Zhu Xuan had gathered a large number of followers, intending to make a stunning debut during the assessment. In the end, however, Su Chen had stolen his thunder.
Now, most of those followers had scattered. Zhu Xuan had been nursing a grudge ever since, determined to defeat Su Chen at Tier Three and reclaim his glory.
This rivalry was a source of endless gossip within the Judicial Court, but one of the main parties involved didn’t seem to care in the slightest.
“And what do you know, as soon as the news broke, someone challenged him,” Ming Lin continued. “The challenge is today—it’s about to start. I didn’t see you in the crowd, so I came to get you.”
What he didn’t mention was that rumors were already spreading that Su Chen was too afraid to show up and watch.
Having spent some time with Su Chen, Ming Lin didn’t believe it. He figured Su Chen probably didn’t even know it was happening.
“The challenger is Xiong Tao, a Tier Four Professional. He’s pretty tough, too, so it’s bound to be a good show,” Ming Lin urged. “Stop eating and come watch.”
“Hmm…” Su Chen considered it for a moment, then nodded. “Alright, let’s go have a look.”
Su Chen washed his hands and followed Ming Lin toward the challenge hall.
Before they even got there, Su Chen could hear a roaring crowd. The entrance itself was packed with people, and four large screens had been set up outside for the Judges who couldn’t get in.
“Why are there so many people today?” Su Chen asked, surprised. He recalled that apart from the very first Core Seed challenge, none of the others had drawn such a large crowd.
“The rest of us have been challenging each other for a month or two now, so the novelty has worn off. But Zhu Xuan is new. He has an Ink Jade Level Talent and a Tier Three Top-level Profession,” Ming Lin said with a wry smile. “Plus, there’s the whole rivalry with you. It gives it a nice narrative.”
“Narrative?” Su Chen was baffled. “What’s that got to do with me?”
“Of course,” Ming Lin teased. “An Ink Jade Talent, destined for the spotlight, gets overshadowed by you. To defeat you, he rises from the ashes, advancing to a Tier Three Top-level Profession, all for the sake of revenge.”
“Doesn’t that sound dramatic?”
Su Chen: “…”
Ming Lin gestured at their surroundings. “And this is just the entrance. Including the two of us, all six of the Core Seeds are here today.”
“They’re not just here to watch the show, are they,” Su Chen mused.
Ming Lin nodded. “Mainly to observe Zhu Xuan’s performance. Now that he’s Tier Three, he’ll be part of the challenge rankings. Anyone who wants to become the Chief Seed has to beat him, so of course they’re here to scout.”
Know your enemy, know yourself, and you can fight a hundred battles without defeat.
“Excuse me, coming through…” Ming Lin started pushing his way inside. The people he shoved aside started to get annoyed, but their expressions immediately changed when they turned and saw who it was.
“It’s Su Chen…” someone whispered, their eyes gleaming with excitement. “Zhu Xuan’s arch-nemesis…”
’Arch-nemesis? Seriously?’ Su Chen was speechless. ’Just how bored are these people?’
