Chapter 182: Chapter 124: The Space Storer’s Complete Inauguration
“Yes and no,” Ming Lin explained. “The Translation Department’s special status comes from the fact that it doesn’t have a dedicated director. It’s under the direct jurisdiction of the Elder Council.”
“But people from the department often become Elder Council members. For instance, Elder Sang’s teacher was once on the Elder Council.”
“I had no idea…” Su Chen was surprised; he really didn’t know much about this.
“You went to the Translation Department to network but didn’t even find this out?” Ming Lin teased.
Su Chen shrugged, and Ming Lin continued, “Of course, the most crucial person is his senior brother, Pu Zhenghong—Elder Pu.”
“This Elder Pu, it’s said that he was on very good terms with our Chief Judge back in the day. Oh, and your teacher too…”
“My teacher?” Su Chen was taken aback. He’d never heard Sang Hanhai mention it. He couldn’t help but ask:
“This Elder Pu, is he that impressive?”
“Impressive?” Ming Lin’s voice rose, but then he lowered it and said, “Back in the day, he had the chance to join the Elder Council, but he turned it down himself.”
“That is impressive,” Su Chen couldn’t help but nod. He then asked, “Does he have a specific area of expertise?”
“You know about Dome Light, right?” Ming Lin glanced at him. “Elder Pu was the one who discovered it. He personally oversaw the work of translating and restoring the text, as well as its promotion.”
“That’s a monumental achievement,” Su Chen couldn’t help but remark. He knew how significant Dome Light was.
“And what’s more…” Ming Lin continued, “Five years after Dome Light was established, he personally oversaw the construction of Ying Feng’s Defense Spirit Ring.”
He pointed to the massive, faintly visible metal ring overhead. “I don’t know what methods he used, but all the Mutant Species in the vicinity vanished completely. To this day, not a single Mutant Species dares to come near Ying Feng.”
Su Chen looked up in astonishment. So that thing was actually made by Old Sang’s senior brother.
He had looked up information on it, but the records only said the Defense Spirit Ring was a collaborative effort from all sectors of Ying Feng, with its main purpose being to protect Ying Feng from external threats.
But they didn’t name any specific individuals or detail its exact application.
’In that case, this Elder Pu must know what those symbols carved on it are.’
’To think it can even deter Mutant Species… The Great Venerable is pretty impressive in the real world, too.’
“See now?” Ming Lin said with a sigh. “His status and achievements are greater than an Elder’s, even if he isn’t one. But he’s a purist, always in the Translation Department researching some ancient stuff. He hasn’t made a public appearance in years.”
Su Chen was lost in thought.
Ming Lin couldn’t help but shake his head. “You, man… No wonder you stopped going after a few visits. That bunch in the Translation Department, they all have their own quirks. You barely know anything about them, so of course they’d give you the cold shoulder.”
The two of them had already been drinking, and with the buzz not yet faded, they spoke with less restraint.
Su Chen chuckled. “Since you know so much about them, I bet they love having you around.”
“Er…” Ming Lin gave an awkward smile. “It’s alright, it’s alright.”
He hastily changed the subject. “Meng Qi is here, too.”
Su Chen turned to look, and sure enough, a timid Meng Qi was cautiously making his way over.
“Seniors…” he called out, ill at ease, as he drew near.
“No need to be so tense.” Ming Lin waved a hand, secretly sizing him up. ’I can’t believe this guy managed to become a Bloody Butcher.’
“What about Zhu Xuan? Didn’t he come with you?” he asked.
“I don’t know. I’ve been training these past few days and haven’t seen him,” Meng Qi said, shaking his head.
’Zhu Xuan definitely isn’t coming,’ Su Chen realized. ’Meng Qi must be confident he can withstand the inspection.’
’But Zhu Xuan would probably be exposed the moment he saw Chong Jingtian.’
’In that case, Zhu Xuan’s death should be within the next few days.’
Su Chen exchanged a simple greeting with Meng Qi, and they walked inside together.
The place was spacious. A group of people had already gathered in the center. Wei Yufan and Zhong Ming had both arrived and were standing off to the side.
“Chief Seed…” the three of them called out as they approached. Chong Jingtian’s gaze swept over them, finally landing on Meng Qi. He smiled and said, “Good, very good. The reason for reforming the Inner Courtyard system was to discover more talent. It seems to be proving quite effective.”
’Chong Jingtian really didn’t notice anything. How on earth is this guy faking it?’ Su Chen wondered, looking at Meng Qi, whose face was flushed with excitement.
Ming Lin, however, noticed the busy Sang Hanhai nearby looking in his direction, his eyes lighting up.
A thought stirred within him. Having become a Core Seed, he had also thought about trying to build a relationship with the Translation Department these past few years, but just like most people, he had been given the cold shoulder.
He had barely ever spoken to Professor Sang. Just as he was about to open his mouth to offer some pleasantries, he saw Sang Hanhai grin and say, “Hey, I finally found you, kid.”
’Who? Me?’ Ming Lin’s heart leaped. Just as he was wondering when his name had reached the professor’s ears, he heard him continue:
“Su Chen, you’re a real heartless punk, you know that? If it weren’t for that thing, you really wouldn’t have come back to the Translation Department, would you?”
Su… Su Chen? Ming Lin’s expression shifted. He turned his head to see Su Chen giving a wry smile. “Elder Sang, come on, you know that’s not it. I was just afraid of bothering you.”
Wei Yufan, who had been silent nearby, looked over in shock and suspicion. ’Didn’t Su Chen only go to the Translation Department four or five times? How could he be so close with Sang Hanhai?’
“Alright, stop pretending.” Sang Hanhai clicked his tongue in amazement. “I never expected you to be this impressive, kid. I’ve heard all about it. That Chief Seed thing Old Chong cooked up? It’s eighty percent certain to land in your hands.”
Standing to the side, Judge You glanced coolly at Ming Lin, his brow furrowing as he caught the scent of alcohol.
“I wouldn’t dare, I wouldn’t dare…” Su Chen was speechless. ’You’re a big shot, so you can say whatever you want, but you should at least consider how other people feel!’
Hearing this, Wei Yufan’s face turned as black as the bottom of a pot, and Zhong Ming narrowed his eyes.
Ming Lin, meanwhile, remembered the pompous introduction he had just given outside and let out a helpless, wry smile. ’I really must still be drunk.’ He slapped his own cheeks.
