Chapter 185: Chapter 125: Why Did He Die? (Part 2)
That was also because very little time had passed since the end of the battle, so the Judicial Court could still trace what had happened. If too much time had gone by, it would have been impossible.
Meng Qi’s sobs gradually subsided. He kept his head down, and no one could see his expression.
Finally, Jiang Shumo said, “Zhu Xuan was in Yingfeng. He had no life-or-death enemies. The price of killing him would be too great. In all likelihood, this is related to the Deceitful God.”
“When the Deceitful God makes a move, there’s always a purpose. Why kill Zhu Xuan? What are they trying to achieve?” Chong Jingtian’s expression was grim. “Shumo… I’m leaving this matter to you. I’m going to convene an Elder Council meeting to grant the Judicial Court temporary law enforcement authority in Yingfeng City.”
“No matter who it is, and no matter who helped them, I will make them pay the price!”
His tone was brutal, and anyone could hear the intense killing intent it contained.
Chong Jingtian left in a hurry, leaving the few of them sitting restlessly. Wei Yufan was the first to speak. “Chief Judge Jiang, if there’s nothing else for us here, we’ll be leaving.”
“Wait…” Jiang Shumo’s eyes glinted as he swept his gaze over them. “I’m convening a meeting with all the directors and deputy directors. You all can sit in.”
They were all surprised. He wanted *them* to sit in?
The body was taken away for further examination. In silence, the group followed Jiang Shumo to the main conference room.
There were twelve directors and honorary directors stationed in Yingfeng. Including the deputy directors and honorary deputy directors, there were thirty-three people in total.
Teng Liang and Bu Siqi were among them, both completely bewildered by this emergency meeting, right up until Jiang Shumo announced that Zhu Xuan had been murdered.
“What! Zhu Xuan was killed? He’s a Core Seed!”
“Who? Who did this!” several deputy directors roared, their eyes blazing with fury. They were all students of Wei Yinsuo, making Zhu Xuan their junior brother.
Among the Director Level attendees, two also had very dark expressions.
When they learned that Zhu Xuan had died in his own residence, the room fell silent.
“What happens next is simple. Find every place he went, everything he ate, and every person he met after the arena battle. Every single one…” Jiang Shumo said in a low voice.
“What if it involves people outside the Judicial Court?” a Director Level official asked.
Jiang Shumo didn’t even raise his eyes. “The Chief has already gone to convene the Elder Council. This time, anyone who stands in our way is an enemy of the Judicial Court.”
“Also, each of you will spare a squadron from your subordinates for them.”
He pointed a finger, and Su Chen and the others sitting beside him looked stunned.
“The Judicial Court doesn’t support idlers. As fellow Core Seeds, you won’t be sitting around either. You’ll join the investigation.” Jiang Shumo issued the order in a tone that allowed no argument. “I know the networks behind you are intricate and complex. Now is the time to leverage them. Matters outside the Judicial Court—I’m leaving them to you!”
“Yes…” The group stood up and accepted the order, their expressions varied.
The meeting ended quickly, and everyone sprang into action.
“Su Chen…”
After leaving the conference building, Bu Siqi called out to him and, along with Teng Liang, went to his residence.
“What’s the situation this time?” Bu Siqi asked with a grave expression after closing the door. “How did Zhu Xuan die?”
Su Chen’s heart stirred, and he lowered his voice. “It seems the Deceitful God Sect got to him. The body looked like a dried-up corpse, even more shriveled than Senior Brother Teng.”
Teng Liang, who was standing beside him, was surprised. “You saw the body?”
“The Deceitful God Sect… they’ve actually managed to infiltrate the Judicial Court?” Bu Siqi was shocked and bewildered.
“I don’t know.” Su Chen shook his head, but he saw Bu Siqi’s brow furrowed in a tight frown. “What is Jiang Shumo thinking? Zhu Xuan is already dead, yet he’s making the five of you take a team and show your faces in public.”
“Bait,” Teng Liang said concisely.
Bu Siqi couldn’t help but exclaim, “He really dares. You guys are treasures in the Chief’s eyes. If another one of you is lost, the complex network of relationships alone would be enough to give him a massive headache.”
“He’s always favored risky gambits and clever ploys,” Teng Liang replied indifferently.
Bu Siqi quickly urged, “Junior Brother, you have to be careful. You must take care of yourself. If things get too dangerous, just hide at home. It’s not like Jiang Shumo can force you to go out, can he?”
“It’s my duty…” Su Chen shook his head, though he was thinking, ’I know better than anyone what really happened to Zhu Xuan.’
’The other Deceitful God’s Followers are still in hiding. This is a good opportunity to use the Judicial Court’s power to capture the Black Tuo Followers and complete my objective. If they’re really using us as bait, I’ll actually be safer.’
“You! You’re so stubborn!” Bu Siqi was exasperated. “I saw it during your fight with Zhu Xuan. He looked like he was on the verge of a mental breakdown, and you even guided his thoughts. Wouldn’t it have been perfect if he had just fallen into despair?”
“Senior Brother, you were there too?” Su Chen asked, surprised.
“Yes. You’re very impressive,” Bu Siqi couldn’t help but add. “No wonder the teacher values you so highly.”
“He knows what he’s doing. No need to say more,” Teng Liang cut in. His next question was blunt. “Since you saw Zhu Xuan’s body, did you have any other thoughts? Or perhaps something the Chief ordered you not to speak about?”
Su Chen’s heart stirred. ’I could use the information gap between the higher-ups and us to secretly target Meng Qi.’
“…Judge You took Chu Yunze away to have his memories examined…” Su Chen’s voice was barely audible.
“Someone close to him…” A sharp glint flashed in Teng Liang’s eyes. He said in a low voice, “Be careful. Wu Yang will continue to stay with you.”
“Thank you, Senior Brothers.” After seeing the two of them off, Su Chen couldn’t help but think, ’If things continue like this, Meng Qi won’t be able to hide for much longer. That Jiang Shumo… he’s really something else…’
The order had been given, and the Punishment Department squadron assigned to him was ready.
Su Chen quickly went to the Gravity Chamber, wanting to see what this new ability he had obtained was all about.
As his Spiritual Power surged, he felt a strange sensation begin to emanate from his surroundings. Space seemed to turn into flowing water, something he could perceive with perfect clarity.
Suddenly, Su Chen’s body felt drained, and he vanished from within the Gravity Training Chamber.
’So this is hiding in a spatial interstice?’ Su Chen found it magical. It felt like he was standing on the ground, yet also like he had stepped on nothing at all. It was a very awkward sensation.
’But the consumption is enormous…’ Su Chen was secretly astonished as he felt his Spiritual Power draining like a burst dam. ’I can probably only maintain this for a few minutes at most.’
He experimented further and found that while inside this spatial crevice, he could do almost nothing. The moment he tried to mobilize even a little of the energy in his body, the Spiritual Power consumption would increase exponentially.
Moreover, he couldn’t move on his own; he could only stay in one place.
’If I do nothing, I can hide for a few minutes. But if I try to gather power, I won’t even last a few seconds.’
’But as long as I remain hidden, never mind a Tier Four, even a Tier Five might not be able to find me.’ Su Chen secretly speculated. The various drawbacks couldn’t conceal the power of this ability.
’As expected of something related to space…’ Su Chen kneaded the bridge of his nose, feeling his Spiritual Power gradually recover.
Once he had mostly recovered, he went to meet the Punishment Department squadron assigned to him. There were one hundred and twenty people in total. The vast majority were Tier Two Professionals, with only a few being Tier One or Tier Three.
Yang Yan and Zhang Yunqing were among them. Seeing Su Chen, the man who was about to lead them, their feelings were inevitably complex.
’Root out the Deceitful God’s Followers in Yingfeng City… This mission is so vague. They really are just using us as bait.’ Su Chen was left speechless as he read the direct order from Jiang Shumo.
“Everyone…” Su Chen looked up at the squad, which Wu Yang had already assembled into formation. They were solemn and serious, all experienced Veteran Judges, their eyes fixed on him.
“I don’t have much experience, so I’ll be counting on all of your help from here on out.” He sounded sincere, his voice clear and loud.
“We will do our utmost!” the crowd responded in unison. They couldn’t help but feel a bit of goodwill toward Su Chen.
Of course, his status as a Core Seed was a major factor. If he had been an ordinary Judge, the reception would have been entirely different—something along the lines of, “If you know you have no experience, then get lost.”
He was the first to lead his team out. Although he had already detected several areas where the Black Tuo Followers were active, heading directly there for a targeted capture would be too conspicuous.
Su Chen decided to patrol around for a few days first, just to keep up appearances.
