My Professions Have Too Much Personality - Chapter 58: Promotion? Transfer? Benefits?

Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Promotion? Transfer? Benefits?
“Yes.” Zhang Hongbo nodded. “I promised Yuan Chenyang I would alter his file for him next year.”
Yang Yan closed the file. The practice of altering files was nothing new to him.
The subtle ostracism of refugees was a well-known fact, but there were also powerful figures with a keen eye for talent who discovered gifted individuals among their ranks.
To avoid potential ostracism, altering one’s file was one solution.
After seven or eight years, who would still remember their former refugee status? Whatever was in the file became fact.
“Do you have a plan?” Yang Yan asked.
“He’s on the patrol team. Normally, he should be patrolling at least once every three days,” Zhang Hongbo said in a low voice. “But he hasn’t been out recently. I can have a talk with him.”
“He’s still just a Tier One Professional; he can’t refuse.”
“Since it’s within his duties, it’s settled.” Yang Yan’s hesitation vanished.
“Let’s consider it a test for him. If he’s unwilling, it just shows he lacks a spirit of dedication. In that case, there would be no need to alter his file.”
“I suppose that’s the only way. He should understand,” Zhang Hongbo sighed. “After all, it’s not like we’re just leaving him to face the danger alone. Our people will be there as backup.”
Yang Yan gave a noncommittal response and left with Gu Bing.
It wasn’t until they were in the elevator that Gu Bing, who had been silent the whole time, pushed up his glasses and said, “He’s using you.”
“His son also has a Silver Level Talent. After being trained and reassigned to Southwind City, he has a high probability of inheriting his position as City Lord. An extra Su Chen adds an unknown variable.”
“By having us make the decision, even Old Yuan won’t be able to find fault with him afterward.”
“I know,” Yang Yan said, unconcerned. “As long as his method works.”
…
Su Chen was dragged to the top floor by an impatient Sun Tai. He knocked on the office door and only entered after receiving permission.
“It’s you?” Zhang Hongbo was quite surprised. The order for him to find Su Chen hadn’t even been sent out yet.
’This is perfect, though.’
“Here, have a seat.” He smiled warmly, his demeanor as pleasant as a spring breeze.
Before he could speak, Sun Tai chimed in, his face wrinkling into a smile like a chrysanthemum. “Congratulations, Lord City Lord!”
“Congratulate me?” Zhang Hongbo, who was just about to deliver his prepared speech, froze. A hint of confusion appeared in his eyes. “Why?”
“The Inspectorate just produced a Tier Two Professional, a new pillar of our Southwind City. Isn’t that cause for you to be congratulated?” Sun Tai replied quickly.
“Tier Two… Professional?” Zhang Hongbo’s eyelid twitched. His gaze slowly shifted to Su Chen, who wore a reserved expression.
“That’s right, it’s Su Chen.” Sun Tai confirmed his guess and added with a sigh, “And it just so happens to be while you are acting head of the Inspectorate. It seems Su Chen is fated to be connected with you.”
Su Chen keenly noticed Zhang Hongbo’s expression flicker for an instant, but he quickly composed himself and said with emotion, “I never would have thought… Old Yuan really struck gold this time. To think you’re already a Tier Two Professional.”
Su Chen silently raised his guard. He gave a wry smile and said, “Ever since I was fortunate enough to be taken as a student by my teacher, I’ve cherished this opportunity. I’ve been working diligently, never daring to slack off.”
“In order to advance, I haven’t even been out on patrol recently.”
“A minor thing. As the Minister’s student, how could you not have some privileges?” Zhang Hongbo waved his hand dismissively, seeming very pleased. “Truly a pillar of our Southwind City.”
“A Tier Two Professional… The ordinary patrol member or even team captain positions are no longer worthy of your strength. However, there are no vacancies within the Inspectorate at the moment.”
Hearing this, the smile on Fatty Sun’s face faltered.
But after a moment of contemplation, Zhang Hongbo added, “How about this: for now, we’ll give you a nominal position as Deputy Section Chief in the Patrol Section.”
The expression on Fatty Sun’s face was a sight to behold. He repeatedly glanced at Su Chen, wishing he would accept immediately.
’Deputy Section Chief?’ Su Chen felt a strange sense of unease. He instinctively refused, “No, no, I can’t. I’ve only just joined the Inspectorate. I haven’t made any contributions. How can I be promoted? What would my colleagues think?”
“Special circumstances call for special measures. Southwind City is in dire need of talent right now.” Zhang Hongbo didn’t give him a chance to refuse. “Have Section Chief Sun file the application, the Deputy Minister will approve it, and I will stamp it.”
“Oh, right. As Deputy Section Chief, you can go to logistics and pick out a Tier Two Weapon.”
Su Chen looked like he wanted to say something but held his tongue.
“Also, an annual share of Glazed Blood, three Tier Two Mist Poison Potions per week… and the right to apply for an E-level Body Refining Technique.”
Su Chen swallowed the words he was about to say.
“You may go…”
But in the end, the “dagger was never revealed.” Su Chen couldn’t help but be stunned.
’Is this really just a reward?’
As they got on the elevator, he was still muttering to himself, but Fatty Sun was ecstatic. “I never expected the Lord City Lord to be so generous! I was truly judging a gentleman by my own petty standards.”
’So fast… Did he really train day and night in his room? Not letting a single opportunity or moment go to waste… That kind of Heart…’
Back in the room, Zhang Hongbo’s brows were tightly furrowed. His gaze fell upon the word “Silver” on the file, and for the first time, he showed hesitation.
…
The promotion was processed with an efficiency that exceeded Su Chen’s imagination. A jubilant Fatty Sun went to handle the paperwork for him and returned in less than half an hour.
“Haha…” He grinned widely, pulling out an exquisite, cyan Hurricane Badge. He said with envy:
“Deputy Section Chief, tsk tsk… The Lord City Lord really is magnanimous. How long has it been, and you’re already almost at my level, little brother.”
“If the Minister had handled this, it probably would have caused some controversy. But it’s different with the Lord City Lord. Little brother, pack your things. Get ready to take up your new post.”
“Take up my new post?” Su Chen was fiddling with the Hurricane Badge. Hearing this, he was suddenly struck by a strong premonition. “Where am I going?”
Fatty Sun was still full of envy. “The North City Supervision Branch. You’ll be the acting Deputy Director. You’re a Tier Two Professional, after all. Can’t have you just sitting around doing nothing.”
“When you get back, I’m afraid Qin Cheng’s position won’t be secure.”
“I see…” Su Chen lowered his head, his eyes turning cold. He finally understood. So they were using him as bait.
Old Yuan had tried this once before. Zhang Hongbo probably didn’t find anything during his investigation, so he’s resorting to underhanded methods.
’Old Zhang, you really won’t let me rest for even a moment.’
Fatty Sun thought he was just reluctant to move and explained, “Don’t worry… North City is quite prosperous. The Supervision Branch there has everything you could want. Even their Gravity Training Chamber is five-times gravity. Aside from the Branch Director, you’ll be the one in charge.”
“You can just let your subordinates handle the work. It’ll be the same for you as it is here.”
“Honestly…” Su Chen shook his head. ’Old Sun knows too little. He actually thinks this is a promotion.’
However, he quickly realized something else. This didn’t seem to be a whim on Zhang Hongbo’s part; it looked like it had been planned for some time.
’And to think, on his very first day, he specifically sought out Sun Tai to drop hints.’
Su Chen was lost in thought. ’It’s a good thing I advanced to a Tier Two Professional. Otherwise, Zhang Hongbo would have probably just sent me out on patrol.’
Since things had come to this, he composed himself and said, “Let’s go to logistics. The City Lord promised me quite a few things.”
’I’ll take the benefits first and worry about the rest later.’
“Let’s go, I’ll go with you.” Fatty Sun’s eyes darted around, and he chuckled. “Section Chief Qian from logistics is an old friend of mine. I heard he got his hands on something good recently. We have to make him bring it out.”
