Chapter 60: Chapter 60: Su Chen: I Hope Pan Yu Is Alright
“You could say that.” Qian Hui’s expression was a little odd, but he seemed to agree.
“Thank you, Brother Qian,” Su Chen said solemnly. “I won’t forget this favor.”
Just as he’d expected, Qian Hui’s tight frown eased considerably. He sighed in relief. “Plenty of people had their eyes on this. Now that you’ve taken it, I won’t have to offend anyone in the future.”
“With your standing, no one else can complain.”
“Oh, right, there’s also this.” Qian Hui opened another metal box to the side, inside which were three viscous, crimson potions.
“Tier Two Mist Poison Potions. This is your allotment for one week.”
“Couldn’t you just give us a few weeks’ worth? Saves us from running back and forth,” Fatty Sun grumbled.
Qian Hui’s face darkened. “Then you go tell the Trade Depot to send more over.”
“I was just joking. Why are you getting so worked up?” Fatty Sun shook his head, exasperated.
Seeing that Qian Hui was so angry he looked ready to throw a punch, Su Chen quickly stepped in to smooth things over. “It’s fine to come back more often. That way I can learn more from Brother Qian.”
After a few more words of small talk, Su Chen and Fatty Sun left.
“Don’t feel like you owe him anything. Old Qian has ripped me off plenty of times before,” Fatty Sun explained once they were outside.
’If you’re going to feel indebted to anyone, it should be me.’
“I understand,” Su Chen said sincerely.
Fatty Sun was pleased. Talking with Su Chen was so refreshingly simple. He began to ponder aloud, “Hmm, we’re still missing a Body Refining Technique…”
“Well, I’m in charge of Training Techniques. For a Gale Hunter, using the E-level Gale Body Refining Technique—scorching the body with its Fiery Hurricane—should be quite effective,” Fatty Sun suggested, then added:
“We only have two or three E-level Training Techniques here anyway, so there isn’t much to choose from.”
Su Chen had no objections, so he followed Fatty Sun to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and watched as he retrieved the Body Refining Technique and handed it to him.
“Oh, right…” Seeing he was about to leave, Sun Tai stopped him again and took out a file. “This is the Meditation Technique you wanted.”
Su Chen took it and gave it a quick look. It was the Void Spirit Meditation Technique, which focused on fine-tuning one’s control over Spiritual Power.
His Dawn Meditation Technique had long since reached Master Level, granting him an ability called Chen Yun that increased his mental fortitude.
He was basically immune to Tier One Mental Attacks.
He had only mentioned it two days ago, and Sun Tai already had results.
“This is already the third one. If you want to get another, it’ll probably be very tricky…” Sun Tai said in a low voice, rubbing his hands together.
“I shouldn’t need any more,” Su Chen said, shaking his head. To advance to Secret Scholar, he only needed three F-level Meditation Techniques, and there wasn’t much progress left to complete.
“That’s good.” Sun Tai breathed a sigh of relief.
Zhang Hongbo had only given him three days to prepare. Su Chen, finishing his packing just in time, followed Fatty Sun to get acquainted with the new location.
Southwind City was huge. In addition to the patrol guards dispatched daily from the Inspectorate Headquarters, temporary branches were also set up in the four districts—south, east, north, and west—to ensure a swift response.
…
“Su Chen was transferred out of the Inspectorate to the North City Branch, and he even became a Tier Two Professional.”
Zhou Xian received the secret message from his subordinate, and a cold glint flared in his sinister eyes. His gaze fell upon a corpse nearly encased in frost, and a flicker of grief passed through them.
His own son had died an untimely death, while the murderer’s star only continued to rise. A suffocating resentment filled his chest.
’Pan Yu has gone silent, too. Something must have happened to him, but it wasn’t the Inspectorate’s doing. Could it be…?’
With Pan Yu gone, the only people he could still use inside the Inspectorate were small fry.
’Don’t tell me I actually have to do it myself?’ Zhou Xian stared at the corpse, still wavering.
He had no other missions. He just needed to find that “delicious soul.” If he really threw caution to the wind, he might just have a chance.
But he wasn’t sure if Su Chen actually knew why the Deceitful Artifact was now empty.
“Zhang Hongbo, using him as bait… Aren’t you afraid Yuan Chenyang will come back and try to kill you?” Zhou Xian paced back and forth in the room, his hair a mess and his eyes sunken. His frame was as gaunt as a withered tree, and his voice grew ever lower.
…
“Sigh… It’s just one thing after another…”
On the way, Sun Tai glanced at Su Chen in the hovercar’s rearview mirror and sighed. “Pan Yu, the deputy chief of the Patrol Division… I think something’s happened to him.”
“The deputy chief? Something happened?” Su Chen asked, looking stunned. “What’s going on?”
“I don’t know.” Fatty Sun scratched his head with one hand on the steering wheel. “He hasn’t shown up at the Inspectorate for several days in a row. At first, everyone thought he was on some mission, but then nobody could contact him. They went to his house to check, and no one was there either.”
“A secret mission?” Su Chen couldn’t help but ask.
“The City Lord definitely didn’t assign one, and it’s highly unlikely the Director did, either. Pan Yu has barely met the Director,” he said, shaking his head.
“Are there any clues?” Su Chen asked, looking just as puzzled.
“Your division chief is already investigating the situation,” Fatty Sun said in a low voice. “It’s got everyone in the department on edge. Most people think the Deceitful God Sect is making moves in the shadows. His safe at home is gone, too. No one knows what to make of it.”
Su Chen sighed. “I hope he’s all right.”
“Yeah, he’s a pretty good guy,” Sun Tai agreed.
The North City Branch was a small, four-story building. As someone from headquarters, appointed by the City Lord, and the Director’s own student—a big shot with a background that reached the heavens—Su Chen naturally received an enthusiastic welcome.
After a cordial chat with the branch director, Hou Xu, where Su Chen made it clear he had no intention of throwing his weight around and just wanted to focus on his training, the man became even more welcoming, unhesitatingly offering up his own director’s office.
Hou Xu went home every day; with a wife, child, and a warm bed waiting for him, he didn’t live at the branch.
’A Five Times Gravity Chamber… it has everything I need.’ After seeing Fatty Sun off, Su Chen carefully inspected the room. He activated his Spiritual Perspective, secretly scanning for any surveillance devices.
He pulled the curtains shut with a practiced motion, then peeked through a small gap at the world outside. People bustled about below, and hovercars crisscrossed the sky above.
’They must have people stationed outside. If this is a fishing trip, the one holding the rod can’t be too far away,’ Su Chen thought. ’Maybe… I should call in some insurance?’
Su Chen opened his wristband and scrolled through his contacts. After a few taps, he closed it, satisfied.
Stretching his limbs, Su Chen reached into his Storage Space, pulled out a bottle of Fog Poison Potion, uncorked it, and downed it in a single gulp. It had a sharp, spicy taste.
The potion burned slightly as it went down his throat.
The effects were immediate and intense. Within seconds, his exposed skin turned crimson, and it felt as if blades were slicing him up from the inside.
’This stuff is intense…’ Su Chen’s face flushed crimson. He quickly took a swig of Spirit Light Potion and scrambled into the Gravity Chamber. The abrupt five-fold increase in gravity nearly slammed him to the floor. It took him a good while to acclimate and enter the proper state.
As a result, when he began to circulate the Gale Body Refining Technique, the sensation of being sliced apart grew even more intense. What had felt like a cold blade was now a superheated one.
In this place, Su Chen didn’t dare train to the point of utter exhaustion. Once he felt he’d done enough, he stopped.
[Gale Hunter: 2%]
[Secret Artifact Master: 79%]
[E-level Gale Body Refining Technique – Novice: 5%]
[F-level Void Spirit Meditation Method – Novice: 50%]
Now that he was Tier Two, both his profession development and Body Refining Technique progression had slowed considerably. Even with upgraded potions and a better Gravity Chamber, it was difficult to match the pace he’d had at Tier One.
Thanks to the influence of his Red Gold Level Spirit Talent, his progress in the Secret Artifact Master profession was quite a bit faster than in Sky Splitter Warrior.
Early the next morning, before Su Chen could even start training, someone hurried over to inform him that he had a visitor downstairs.
’He actually came? And so soon?’ Su Chen was rather surprised. He straightened himself up a little and headed downstairs.
The first thing he saw was a young man standing in the main hall. He stood ramrod straight and cut a fine figure. It was none other than the City Lord’s son, Zhang Hengyu.
