Chapter 65: Chapter 65: Su Chen is a Deceitful God’s Follower?
BOOM!
The cyan iron whip clashed with the lightning, and the compressed Wind Element within it erupted. A violent gale surged forth, sharp as a blade, instantly slicing the man beside Zhou Xian into several pieces.
But Su Chen was only a Tier Two Professional, after all. The searing lightning quickly engulfed him and slammed into his body. It felt like being hit head-on by a truck, and the immense force sent him flying backward.
But Zhou Xian’s expression changed dramatically. The man who had taken a direct hit from him didn’t even fall. Instead, he used the force of the impact to ride the blow, drifting away like a falling leaf and covering a great distance.
He vanished without a trace in the blink of an eye.
’He got away!?’
…
“A leak during a minor operation like this… It looks like a major purge is indeed necessary.”
In the meeting hall, Xia Hanshi’s slight figure occupied the head seat. Zhang Hongbo sat to his right, while Yang Yan and a few others were on his left.
Hearing this, Zhang Hongbo broke out in a cold sweat and explained, “The information was only leaked at the final moments of the operation. It doesn’t necessarily mean there’s an internal problem.”
“Even if there is a mole, it must be a low-level one. They’ll be found quickly.”
Yang Yan tried to smooth things over. “Still, we took out one of their dens. Southwind City’s work during this period wasn’t for nothing.”
“A few small fry. What damn good is killing them? If we don’t pull them out by the roots, they’ll just spring up again sooner or later.” Xia Hanshi’s tone was unpleasant, but he didn’t press the issue.
Yang Yan glanced discreetly at Zhang Hongbo. ’Knowing Elder Xia’s habits,’ he thought, ’he’s probably already taken a walk around Southwind City by now.’
He didn’t know if Zhang Hongbo was genuinely compassionate or simply following orders from Ying Feng, but the refugees in Southwind City were living relatively well.
The Southwind City Lord himself probably didn’t even know that those refugees had done him a huge favor.
He remembered that in the last city they visited, the City Lord hadn’t shown the slightest concern for the refugees.
Not long after Elder Xia arrived, he found some pretext to break both of that City Lord’s legs.
“What kind of person is Yuan Chenyang?” Xia Hanshi asked suddenly.
Zhang Hongbo was somewhat surprised. After a moment of contemplation, he answered honestly, “He can be a bit reckless, but he’s diligent and hardworking.”
“Reckless?” A sharp glint flashed in Xia Hanshi’s eyes. “If that’s the case, how would he think to have his own student go undercover?”
Zhang Hongbo was confused but explained, “His personality is a bit reckless, but he’s still quick-witted.”
He was also suspicious about the matter, but he couldn’t just sell Yuan Chenyang out.
’Where did that Top-tier Profession come from…’ Xia Hanshi grew irritated. ’These guys are so secretive. I’d love to just rip their heads off.’
“What about that student of his?” Xia Hanshi asked nonchalantly.
Zhang Hongbo paused, as if he had realized something. His tone was level as he said, “You mean Su Chen? Ah, he’s excellent. A Silver Level physique. He’s quite young, though. He won’t be heading to Ying Feng until next year.”
’Su Chen? He was one of the ones who borrowed the [Scholar] materials, I believe.’
A half-smile touched Xia Hanshi’s lips. “Yuan Chenyang couldn’t win the slot from you?”
“Your insight is sharp, Elder,” Zhang Hongbo said with a wry smile.
Xia Hanshi paid it no mind. Beside him, Yang Yan kept his head lowered, sighing internally.
’None of these men who become City Lords are easy to deal with. Zhang Hongbo just concealed a crucial piece of information—Su Chen’s identity as a refugee.’
’Elder Xia was a refugee himself. If he learned Su Chen’s identity and decided to promote one of his own, he might just revoke Zhang Hengyu’s opportunity to go to Ying Feng.’
’Even if Zhang Hongbo didn’t know Elder Xia well, his instincts were sharp enough to avoid that point.’
’Elder Xia probably never would have guessed that Yuan Chenyang would take a refugee as a student, either.’
As for whether he should mention it, Yang Yan thought it over. ’They’re both Silver Level. It makes no difference to me who goes to Ying Feng first, so there’s no need to offend Zhang Hongbo.’
“Investigate carefully. The waters in Southwind City run deeper than I expected,” Xia Hanshi said quietly. “There’s a real behemoth lurking beneath the surface, and I don’t know why it’s here.”
’What does he mean?’
Zhang Hongbo and Yang Yan exchanged a look, their expressions a mixture of shock and doubt.
…
“The Sacred Artifact is gone…” the Priest’s voice was hollow. A chill went down Zhou Xian’s spine. He said in a low voice, “Your people confirmed he was clean. That’s the only reason I lowered my guard.”
“The Believers are all dead. It’s your word against no one’s,” the Priest said, staring at him with pitch-black pupils.
Rage and alarm flared in Zhou Xian’s chest. “It is what it is,” he said coldly. “What will it take for you to believe me?”
“Believe in my Lord,” the Priest uttered four words.
Zhou Xian immediately shook his head and insisted, “We had an agreement.”
The Priest shot to his feet. Zhou Xian’s heart tightened, but then he saw the other man abruptly turn his head toward a certain direction, his face contorting in shock. “My Lord’s aura… it’s vanished!”
“What do you mean?” Zhou Xian couldn’t help but ask.
“The Sacred Artifact is empty.” The Priest’s brow was deeply furrowed. “It must be the same as last time.”
Zhou Xian froze, his expression shifting. ’Yuan Chenyang is still guarding the ruins, so it can’t be him. Who was it, then? Someone connected to Qi Chuan’s death…’
A figure surfaced in his mind. ’Could it be… Su Chen?’
’That’s right,’ he thought. ’The figure at the alley entrance felt familiar. Now that I think about it, he did bear some resemblance to that guy, Su Chen.’
Zhou Xian grew increasingly furious, partly because his opponent had actually managed to escape from him.
And partly because Su Chen had been right there, and he had failed to stop him.
’Someone who can disguise themselves as one of my Lord’s Believers… could it be one of the Faceless Ghost Followers?’
As the Priest thought this, his face gradually twisted. “There’s another faction of Deceitful God’s Followers in Southwind City! To dare and devour my Lord’s power… they’re courting death!”
Hearing this, Zhou Xian was struck by a sudden realization, and his resentment deepened.
’The Priest already had another suspect. He didn’t believe me at all; he was just trying to coerce me into worshiping Black Tuo.’
But he had gleaned another crucial piece of information: Su Chen might also be a Deceitful God’s Follower.
’No wonder a refugee could rise so quickly. If he’s a Deceitful God’s Follower, then it all makes sense.’
“Is it possible the one who made a move today was the so-called ’Delicious Soul’?” he asked tentatively.
“Impossible,” the Priest’s reply was absolute. “The Deceitful God’s Followers are all impure. My Lord would never call one of them ’delicious.’”
’So it’s not Su Chen…’ Zhou Xian was disappointed for a moment, then he thought to himself, ’Still, perhaps I can use this to first figure out whether Yuan Chenyang is the “Delicious Soul”.’
…
“COUGH… COUGH…” Su Chen closed the window. He was still dizzy, and the taste of blood filled his mouth. Even a heavily injured Tier Three Professional was not someone he could easily handle.
’Good thing I have this Scale Armor, or he would’ve killed me on the spot.’ Su Chen pulled open his clothes. A few of the cyan scales clinging to his skin were dented, and the area stung with a fiery pain.
’But at least I didn’t take that hit for nothing,’ Su Chen thought, looking at the [Low-tier Deceitful God Power] on his status panel.
On the way back, he had found an opportunity to drain the power from the [Deceitful Artifact] to prevent anyone in the Inspectorate from sensing it.
’Perfect. My Secret Scholar profession is almost ready to advance,’ Su Chen thought. He then fed this newly acquired prize to the [Secret Scholar] profession.
[The Secret Scholar has been influenced by the Deceitful God’s Power. Its thirst for knowledge has become all-consuming. It desires to devour a Tier Two Upper-Level Mental Profession to advance to a Top-tier Profession.]
