Chapter 76: Chapter 76: Ability Mutation and Fusion: [Wind and Thunder Envoy]
’But I’m afraid I can’t get involved in this one…’ His expression shifted as he recalled the battle Xia Hanshi had been in. ’Looks like my only option is to report it anonymously.’
He found the map of Southwind City on the virtual screen that popped up from his Wristband and carefully tried to pinpoint the approximate location.
’It should be here…’ He stared at a particular area, also in the Inner City, marked on the map as the East City Trade Headquarters.
’Old Sun should be off work by now,’ Su Chen calculated. ’Time to give you another big gift.’
He immediately leaned over his desk, pulled out a piece of paper, and picked up a pen with his right hand. After a moment’s thought, he switched the pen to his left hand and began to write.
’This is probably a big deal,’ he thought. ’The higher-ups will definitely investigate the source of the information, so I can’t tell Old Sun directly.’
After finishing, he stuffed the note into an envelope and set it aside. Rubbing his hands together, he began to finalize the [Path of the Hunter].
[Path of the Hunter objective completed. The Gale Hunter is ecstatic. Professional transformation in progress…]
The words [Path of the Hunter] dissolved, gradually merging into [Gale Hunter], which also began to distort.
CRACKLE! POP!
Indigo arcs of electricity exploded deep within Su Chen’s pupils. A fine, web-like pattern of lightning appeared on the surface of his eyes. Every strand of his hair stood on end like a steel needle, with tiny arcs of electricity crackling between the tips.
A tingling numbness shot through his entire body. A sharp crack echoed from his chest as bones shifted, and his spine felt like it had been struck by a sledgehammer.
His blood boiled, surging like a crimson tide beneath his skin. Su Chen could hear the hum of electricity coursing through his muscle fibers. He fell back onto the bed, his cheeks twitching uncontrollably.
Unlike the previous mental transformations, this physical change was excruciating, a pain that seemed to bore deep into his marrow and cells.
BANG!
An arc of electricity shot out from his body, shattering the light fixture on the ceiling. The bedsheets burst into flames with a WHOOSH. Su Chen gritted his teeth against the pain, trying his best to control the energy.
Fortunately, the transformation didn’t last long before it began to subside. Su Chen’s clothes were now riddled with charred holes, revealing the Cyan Scale Armor beneath.
[Transformation complete. The Wind and Thunder Envoy is now in place. Due to a change in elemental affinity, your Professional Abilities have mutated.]
[Fury of the Storm has mutated into Wind-Thunder Fury: Your attacks can be imbued with highly compressed Wind-Thunder Elemental Power.]
[Raging Wind Barrier has mutated into Wind-Thunder Barrier: Condense Wind-Thunder Elements to form Armor.]
[Wind Concealing Shadow has mutated into Wind-Thunder Concealment: Use the power of wind and thunder to conceal your form and increase your speed.]
[Frenzied Hunt has high synergy with the new abilities and has been fused into Wind and Thunder Envoy: All abilities have been significantly enhanced.]
’Mutation? Fusion?’ Su Chen was taken aback. He had thought it would be like last time—just an enhancement and a new Professional Ability.
He examined them closely. All the abilities were now fused with the Thunder Element. It was obvious they were far more powerful.
The [Gale Thunder Hunt] that had fused with the new abilities seemed to do more than just improve his physical attributes.
’The power of wind and thunder…’ Having calmed down a little, Su Chen extended a finger, and an arc of electricity blossomed from its tip.
’Not bad, not bad at all…’ He was very satisfied. With a single, fluid motion, he sprang up from the bed. His body felt much lighter. Su Chen carefully assessed the changes. ’My speed and strength have both increased significantly.’
’Hmm…’ With a mere thought, arcs of thunder crackled over his body, forming an Armor mixed with the Thunder Element. ’When layered over my Scale Armor, it not only defends but can also deal retaliatory damage.’
’As for this Wind and Thunder Envoy ability…’ Su Chen mused. Suddenly, arcs of electricity erupted in his eyes. His irises were completely consumed by silver-white currents, and his heart began to pound violently.
His entire body slowly began to float. A torrent of fierce Wind-Thunder Power surged out, creating an invisible field around him. His hair floated up, dyed a deep indigo. A transparent Energy membrane appeared on the surface of his skin, beneath which a network of blue veins pulsed.
’So this is the Wind and Thunder Envoy? It’s so powerful…’ Su Chen was stunned.
’I should be able to fight a Tier Three Professional now, right?’ he thought, clenching his fist as he felt the endless power surging through his body.
’But Tier Three Professionals vary in strength. Their Professional Level, ability development, and even the foundation they built in the Low Tiers all affect their power. It’s impossible to make a simple estimate…’
He quickly ended the state, dropping to the floor and gasping for breath. ’The Energy consumption is massive. Right now, I can only sustain it for a minute or two at most.’
’I’ll set aside this newly acquired Deceitful God’s Power for now.’ Su Chen glanced at his status panel, rested for a little while longer, then grabbed the envelope from the desk and vanished into the night.
……
BEEP, BEEP, BEEP!
The alarm clock on the bedside table suddenly began to vibrate, and a plump hand instantly slammed it shut.
Sun Tai rubbed his eyes. A pair of arms draped over him from the side. With a look of gentle resignation, he carefully lifted his wife’s hands away.
The woman lying beside him was older and not particularly beautiful.
The woman mumbled a few words in her sleep. A soft look passed through Sun Tai’s small, beady eyes. He carefully got out of bed and pulled the covers back over her.
He left the room and carefully opened another door, a pink one. Seeing the little girl sleeping soundly inside, he couldn’t help but smile.
Just like any other day, Sun Tai got himself ready—tidying up, washing his face, and changing his clothes—before preparing to head to the Inspectorate, where he had worked for over a decade.
But just as he reached the front door, his expression changed.
There was a yellow envelope sticking out from under the door.
’Who?’ A cold sweat immediately broke out on Sun Tai’s brow. He swallowed hard, went to the kitchen to grab a pair of chopsticks, and used them to gingerly pick up the envelope.
Not daring to open it in the house, he took it outside.
Only then did he put on a pair of gloves and carefully open it. He glanced at the contents, and his brow furrowed. ’This… this handwriting is atrocious. What does it even say?’
He stared at the note, trying to decipher the scrawl.
A moment later, the color drained from his face.
……
’Hmm… Old Sun should have seen it by now. I hope it didn’t scare him too badly. As long as he sends someone to check it out, it’ll be a huge contribution…’ Su Chen thought while eating breakfast in the cafeteria, occasionally greeting people he knew.
Suddenly, he froze. Someone was running up the stairs—THUMP, THUMP, THUMP—and it was none other than Sun Tai.
He was drenched in sweat, nervously glancing left and right under the strange looks of the others. When he finally spotted Su Chen, he rushed over.
“My friend, we’ve got a huge problem…” Fatty Sun sat down, his expression grim.
’Wait… why is he coming to me?’
Though Su Chen was confused, he put on a bewildered expression and asked, “What’s wrong?”
Fatty Sun glanced around, still looking uneasy, and insisted on dragging Su Chen back to his room.
“Look at this…” After carefully closing the door, he took out the envelope and handed it to Su Chen, his face grave. “Someone slipped this under my door last night.”
“I checked the community’s security footage and found no trace of anyone. It had to be a Tier Two Professional, at least.”
Seeing the look on Su Chen’s face, he added, “Don’t worry, I already opened it. It’s not poisoned.”
’Of course I know it’s not poisoned,’ Su Chen thought, speechless. He took the envelope, opened it, and glanced inside. Sure enough, it was his own messy scrawl.
“…Deceitful God Cultist activity near the East City Trade Headquarters. The danger is immense. If no one is sent to investigate, Southwind City may be in peril of being overthrown…”
“Peril of being overthrown?” Su Chen’s expression changed drastically. “What… what is this all about?”
“I have no idea,” Fatty Sun said, his face etched with worry. “I don’t know who’s playing games in the shadows, trying to use me as a pawn to get someone else killed.”
“Er…” Su Chen was at a loss for words. ’Is Old Sun really this cautious?’
He said tentatively, “This person… if they went to all this trouble, maybe there’s some truth to it. Why not send someone to check the place out? It wouldn’t take much effort.”
“If only it were that simple.” Fatty Sun sighed. “That place is the East City Trade Headquarters.”
