Chapter 90: Chapter 89: Who Exactly Is the Real Black Tuo Follower?
Du Jingming, who was falling from above, looked startled. He stared in disbelief at the cyan figure below. The life aura radiating from it was… somehow no weaker than his own?
Su Chen gave him no chance, surging forward to kick a man while he’s down.
“Heh… heh…” Zhou Xian gritted his teeth, his expression hideous, yet he managed a savage smile. “Worthy of being the Delicious Soul my Lord desires. What a pity…”
His pupils suddenly turned black. A diamond-shaped crystal in his hand shattered, and wisps of black mist erupted, forming the phantom of a seated Black Tuo around him.
Su Chen froze. An invisible force struck at him, and he sensed a lethal threat.
Meanwhile, Du Jingming, who still hadn’t landed, was blasted upward, his face filled with panic.
“This… This is… Black Tuo!?”
Du Jingming clung to the side of the elevator shaft, looking down into an area now completely shrouded in black mist. Half a head was visible within, its black, vertical pupils clearly discernible.
“Zhou Xian is putting his life on the line.”
Sun Tai clung to the wall of the elevator shaft, his face deathly pale. “Brother Su… Brother Su…”
…
’This guy… he’s a believer of Black Tuo,’ Su Chen couldn’t help but think.
“Haha…” Zhou Xian laughed maniacally. “How could an ant like you possibly comprehend the might of my Lord!”
But just as quickly, his laughter died. A look of shocked suspicion appeared in his eyes as he suddenly sensed something familiar about Su Chen.
Immediately after, he watched as Su Chen’s hair vanished and a single black, vertical pupil appeared on his scalp.
Upon entering this state, Su Chen felt the oppressive pressure emanating from the surrounding black mist instantly vanish.
“What!?”
Zhou Xian cried out, stunned. The surrounding arcs of lightning faltered. What was happening to Su Chen was simply unbelievable.
’Su Chen is actually a Black Tuo Follower!?’
’That sense of kinship is impossible to fake! How in the world did the people from Ying Feng verify him?!’
Before his thoughts could even settle, Zhou Xian’s heart leaped. In Su Chen’s hand was something incredibly familiar: a black, vertical pupil crystal.
’Holy Eyes! That’s the one I gave to Yu Xuan! How did it end up in his hands?!’
He knew the power of this item. Zhou Xian couldn’t help but shudder, but he quickly recovered and sneered:
“You can’t use it! You’re a believer of the Faceless Ghost, merely disguised as a follower of my Lord. Your aura might fool me, but you can’t fool the power of my Lord!”
“Using that thing will be your own undoing!”
Su Chen paid him no mind and simply crushed it. Wisps of black mist gushed out, once again forming a seated Black Tuo Statue around him, accompanied by the faint sound of whispers.
Crackling arcs of electricity struck it but failed to cause any damage.
The two Black Tuo Statues faced each other, seemingly locked in a stalemate.
“How can this be!?”
Zhou Xian was dumbfounded. Confusion, helplessness, and anger swirled into a fire in his heart, scorching away his reason.
’That was his Lord, the holy one he worshiped. And now, He was protecting his enemy?’
’Was he supposed to kneel and prostrate himself now?’
’If Su Chen really were a Black Tuo Follower, the Priest would have known. But if he wasn’t, then none of this made any sense.’
’Who in the hell is the real Black Tuo Follower?!’
“I… I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you!” Zhou Xian’s pupils were threaded with blood.
His already fragile faith wavered, and the thirst for revenge for his son’s murder surged to the forefront once more.
To hell with the “Delicious Soul,” to hell with the sacrifice! At this moment, he wanted only one thing: to die and take Su Chen with him!
“Die!”
He charged forward, holding nothing back. The lightning flared, a thousand bolts aimed at the heart of the Black Tuo phantom.
But at that exact moment, both Black Tuo Statues lifted their heads simultaneously, their gazes fixed on Zhou Xian.
They had sensed an unfaithful believer!
Zhou Xian couldn’t help but look up, and then…
BOOM!
The surrounding lightning exploded. He was sent flying backward even faster than he’d charged, crashing through several walls before finally coming to a stop. He collapsed to the ground, spitting blood, his gaze vacant.
In the first-floor lobby, the Inspector Guards, who were already on high alert, jumped in shock.
Zhou Xian stared into the darkness beyond the gaping hole, a bloody gurgle escaping his lips as a figure gradually emerged.
The figure’s upper body was encased in Cyan Scale Armor, and the clothes on his lower body were in tatters. With a single leap, he landed beside Zhou Xian.
“Su Chen?” someone among the surrounding Inspector Guards called out.
Su Chen glanced over and recognized his former patrol captain, Zhao Xiong.
Zhou Xian wasn’t dead yet, just gravely wounded. With only one eye remaining, he stared fixedly at Su Chen.
Su Chen planted a foot on his chest. Applying the slightest pressure, he made more bloody foam gush from the man’s mouth.
“Ghk… ghk… ghk…”
It was the only sound Zhou Xian could make. His venomous eyes remained locked on Su Chen, filled with despair and unwillingness to accept his fate…
Su Chen looked down at him. Silently, an iron wire snaked out from under his foot, slipping into one of the wounds on Zhou Xian’s skin.
A moment later, Zhou Xian fell silent.
’He’s finally dead.’ Su Chen let out a breath, though he was puzzled about something.
’What just happened? Why did both Black Tuo Statues attack Zhou Xian at the same time? Strange…’
“Young… Younger Brother Su!?”
A cry of joyous surprise came from behind him. Sun Tai came rolling over like a human cannonball, weeping with joy. “Younger Brother Su, you’re okay! This is wonderful, just wonderful!”
Heaven knows he had been in utter despair just moments ago.
In the beginning, he had indeed looked after Su Chen because of Yuan Chenyang, but there’s a difference between just looking after someone and truly caring.
He could have simply waited for Su Chen to come to him with a problem before offering help, and that would have been perfectly acceptable.
But Su Chen’s conduct had shown him to be a person worth befriending, so he had always taken the initiative to help, and a deep bond had formed between them.
“He’s… unhurt?” Du Jingming followed close behind, breathing a sigh of relief. At the same time, he was filled with shocked uncertainty as he glanced at Zhou Xian’s gruesome corpse on the floor.
’The man used some kind of technique from a Deceitful God, yet he still couldn’t touch Su Chen. Was it a life-saving trump card left by Judge Xia?’
“I’m a little injured, but it’s nothing serious.” Su Chen held up a hand to stop the blubbering Sun Tai, an unpleasant look on his own face.
“That’s good.” Du Jingming didn’t press the matter; it wasn’t his place.
“Stop staring! Get upstairs and look for any wounded!” Du Jingming turned and barked at the surrounding Inspector Guards.
“Captain Zhao, could you stay behind for a moment?” Su Chen called out.
“Is this… the former Minister of Internal Affairs, Zhou Xian?” Zhao Xiong was taken aback. He walked over, glanced at the body being carried away, then looked at Su Chen, who was getting his injuries checked. He couldn’t help but feel a surge of emotion.
When Su Chen had first been transferred over, he’d assumed he was just some princeling looking to pad his resume. He never imagined that in just a few short months, the man would be capable of taking on Zhou Xian in a direct confrontation and winning.
“Hiss—” Su Chen sucked in a sharp breath and looked at the young woman from the emergency medical department examining him. Her face flushed red, and she said quickly, “I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry…”
His right arm had turned a dark purple. Even with multiple layers of protection, he’d blocked Zhou Xian’s attack, but the force hadn’t been completely negated.
“It’s fine…” Su Chen waved a hand dismissively. The young woman glanced at his well-muscled torso, took a breath to calm her nerves, and placed her hands on the swollen area.
A soft green light emanated from her hands, drifting down onto the injury. A cool sensation spread through him, and the stinging pain began to fade.
’Is this a Profession specifically for healing?’
’The emergency medical department… I’ve never used their services before. No wonder it’s something only high-ranking families can afford—they have Professionals providing the service personally.’
“Captain Zhao is a deputy section chief now?” Su Chen asked, glancing at the insignia on Zhao Xiong’s shoulder.
“It’s thanks to you.” Zhao Xiong knew full well why he’d been promoted. He was a taciturn man, and it was hard for him to utter fawning words.
He wasn’t aware of the changes in the upper echelons, much less that Su Chen had become the student of a Chief Judge.
But his own inexplicable promotion, and Sun Tai’s even more so to Deputy Minister, could only point to one possibility: Su Chen.
Sun Tai added from the side, “Captain Zhao is more than capable. He’ll become a Tier Two Professional soon enough.”
The requirements for Tier One and Tier Two Mid-Low Level Professions weren’t that high. As long as one had the resources and time, they could eventually grind their way up.
“Things over there must be reaching a fever pitch,” Du Jingming said, looking outside the Inspectorate building.
Su Chen’s expression tensed. The group walked outside and saw the western sky glowing a brilliant gold, like flowing fire.
“It… shouldn’t be too big of a problem, right?” Sun Tai swallowed hard.
