Chapter 94: Chapter 92: Invasion of Corrupted Consciousness, Evolution of Believers
…
“The four cities of Ying Feng, Celestial Joy, Lieyang, and Yuan Capital jointly rule Red Thunder Star… Ying Feng is the most powerful among them… It governs one hundred twenty-five cities, and the Elder Council collectively oversees all of Ying Feng’s affairs…”
“The Judicial Court is divided into the Inner Courtyard and the Outer Courtyard, both composed of Professionals, numbering no less than ten thousand in total…”
In his room, Su Chen lay on his bed, scrolling through the virtual screen before him. The journey on the spaceship was extremely boring. There wasn’t even a Gravity Chamber, so he could only meditate.
He spent his free time looking through files, all from the ship’s database, learning a great deal of information that had been previously inaccessible to him.
’Red Thunder Star… this must be the planet. Besides Ying Feng, there are three other giant cities. They already recognize it’s a planet, and perhaps there’s more to it…’
’The appearance of the fog isolated everything and buried the past.’ Su Chen couldn’t help but speculate, ’Afterward, the current civilization began to excavate the past and rediscover technology. That must be why everything I’ve seen seems so strange.’
Every time he came into contact with a new database or high-ranking individual, the first thing he wanted to do was inquire about the origin of the fog.
In the database of this spaceship from Ying Feng, Su Chen finally found a clue. ’…Ying Feng was founded fourteen hundred years ago, but that doesn’t mean the fog appeared fourteen hundred years ago. It just means this place began its recovery fourteen hundred years ago…’
’But Ying Feng was also very weak in the beginning, only gradually developing. The cities under its jurisdiction were often in danger. It wasn’t until twenty years ago, when the Dome Light—an artificial sun—was invented, that they gained the ability to ward off the fog on a large scale and truly began to flourish…’
“I’m just a Brass. I’ll spend some time in the Ying Feng Inspectorate building up seniority, then come back to be a section chief or something…”
Bored out of his mind, Du Yu, who had come to chat, leaned back in his chair and spoke nonchalantly.
He was Du Jingming’s son. The two of them had met before at a banquet.
“But Zhang Hengyu is definitely aiming for the City Lord position. Even though his old man stepped down, his influence is still there…” Du Yu continued to ramble.
“He’s changed a lot. He used to be a total loner, acting like he couldn’t be bothered with anyone. Now he’s quite talkative and has even started trying to win people over.”
Su Chen wore a strange expression. ’He figured Zhang Hengyu’s change was purely because the intense competition between them at the branch office had driven him stir-crazy.’
“Brother Su, I heard that teacher of yours is a notorious killer.” Du Yu lowered his voice. “And that he has ulterior motives for taking students.”
“Where did you hear that?” Su Chen frowned.
Du Yu explained, “The news comes from the trade depots. They’re always moving between the cities, so their information network is pretty good. Before, no one here had any connection to that Chief Judge, so nobody paid much attention.”
“But now that you’re his student, I’ve been hearing a lot of news lately.”
“Gossip and rumors.” Su Chen shook his head, unconcerned.
“I think so too.” Du Yu deeply agreed. “That Chief Judge seemed pretty approachable to me.”
Su Chen watched him quietly as he rambled on about various tidbits. Information didn’t flow well between cities; only people from the trade depots had access to it.
“I heard that in this year’s batch for the Judicial Court, there’s an incredible guy.”
Finally, Du Yu said mysteriously, “This is exclusive information, from Cyan Lake City. They’ve even issued a gag order about it.”
“They issued a gag order, and you still know about it?” Su Chen glanced at him sideways.
Du Yu looked a little awkward and explained, “The guys from the trade depots told me.”
“That’s not important. What’s important is, in this batch, there’s a guy with an Ink Jade Talent.”
“Mo Cui?” Su Chen was surprised. Mo Cui was even higher than Red Gold.
“For real?” Su Chen couldn’t help but be skeptical. “Usually, even a Red Gold Talent is rare. Getting two or three in a year would cause a huge sensation.”
“And there’s a Mo Cui this year?”
“It should be true, right?” Seeing Su Chen’s doubt, Du Yu also became less confident, stammering for a while, unable to say for sure.
“But…” His tone shifted. “He might become the Chief Judge. That’s a member of the Elder Council, one of the Sovereigns who determines the rise and fall of Ying Feng.”
“I’m telling you, the gap between people is even bigger than the gap between a person and a pig.”
Su Chen shook his head, not wanting to listen to his rambling anymore. He went back to scrolling through the virtual screen, but his mind was also pondering the matter.
’Mo Cui, huh… I probably need to find another Profession similar to [Scholar] or [Wise Man] to reach that level.’
…
In the ship’s cargo hold, several accompanying Inspector Guards stood around a metal box. They had all been temporarily dispatched from Southwind City and would return with a trade caravan shortly after arriving in Ying Feng.
DONG!
One of them flinched, suddenly spinning around to look at the metal box behind him, his expression a mix of shock and doubt.
His movement caught the attention of the others. They raised their guns and went on alert. “Zhao Hong, what’s wrong?”
“Didn’t you guys hear that?” Zhao Hong asked hesitantly. “A faint sound.”
The other three exchanged glances and shook their heads. “Didn’t hear anything.”
’Am I just too nervous?’ Zhao Hong began to doubt himself. After a long pause, he walked to the metal box and pressed his ear against it to listen.
“What is it? Is everything okay?”
When he remained still for a long time, the guard next to him couldn’t help but ask.
“It’s nothing.” Zhao Hong shook his head. “I might just be a little mentally tired. I’m going to go wash my face.”
“Okay, we’ll keep an eye on things here.” The others agreed.
“Thanks, everyone.” Zhao Hong thanked them, slung his gun to his left side, and walked up the ladder.
A dark glint flashed through Zhao Hong’s pupils. ’How interesting. It’s not a Deceitful God, yet it can devour my power. I’d really like to see what you are.’
…
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
A knock sounded at the door. Su Chen rubbed his eyes, guessing it was Du Yu, Young Zhang, or Old Bai…
“You are…?” Opening the door, Su Chen was quite surprised. Standing before him was an Inspector Guard.
’The Inspector Guard in charge of guarding the metal box?’ Su Chen recalled. ’Why would he suddenly come looking for me?’
But the other person didn’t speak, just stared at him blankly.
Suddenly… Su Chen’s brow tightened. He saw a flash of black streak across the other person’s pupils.
’Not good,’ he thought. Before he could react, a layered, overlapping voice faintly reached his ears.
“…A very ordinary body, completely unremarkable… How could a body like this possibly devour my power…”
“What… is this thing!?”
The voice suddenly cried out in shock, as if it had discovered something incredible.
Meanwhile, in Su Chen’s vision, a panel materialized, and a large amount of information began to flash across it—
