Chapter 97: Chapter 94: Morning Star Tier! Great Venerable Red Flame Thunder Resonator
Su Chen’s gaze first fell upon the five Dome Lights in the sky, which clustered around the enormous artificial sun at their center.
Compared to Southwind, the artificial illumination system here was far more advanced. Each light source had its own role, working in concert to create an almost perfectly natural light.
It had to be mid-afternoon, as the artificial sun was casting a sunset-red glow, draping the city in a faint crimson veil.
’Even in my past life, I didn’t get to see a “sunset” this beautiful every day.’
“I heard that Ying Feng’s artificial lights actually move as time passes. No idea why,” someone remarked.
Just as eye-catching were the nine massive, semi-circular metal rings encircling the city. They were nested at precise geometric angles, with streams of dark golden Energy winding across their surfaces, creating a breathtakingly beautiful sight.
“It’s magnificent,” Du Yu exclaimed beside him. “No matter how many pictures I’ve seen or stories I’ve heard, nothing compares to seeing it with my own eyes. ’Three years a soldier in the Outer Courtyard, a lifetime of love for Ying Feng.’”
“My dad was only stationed here for a few years, but he went on and on about it for over a decade.”
When he got no response, Du Yu turned to Su Chen, only to find the man’s eyes unfocused and a bizarre expression on his face.
’It wasn’t excitement, nor was it shock. It was a kind of craving, an extreme craving. It was almost… like…’
’Greed!’
The thought startled Du Yu himself. He couldn’t imagine what Su Chen was thinking to have such a look on his face.
’…Where is this recorded?’ Su Chen wondered, incredulous, staring blankly at the panel that had suddenly appeared.
[Morning Star Tier Profession discovered—Great Venerable Red Flame Thunder Resonator. This profession can be undertaken once all requirements are met.]
[Requirement 1: Must possess Profound Purple Talent.]p>
[???]
’A Morning Star Tier profession… I’ve never even heard of it.’
’The implications are staggering!’
’Morning Star Tier? A rank above the numbered Tiers?’ Su Chen mused, his heart pounding. ’And Profound Purple… that’s even higher than Ink Jade Talent. I wonder by how much…’
’Great Venerable Red Flame Thunder Resonator… what a badass name. Is it connected to the Red Thunder Star?’ Su Chen’s mind raced, thoughts surfacing one after another.
’Where is it recorded?’ His face was almost pressed against the porthole as he stared intently at Yingfeng City.
’My panel is powerful, but it needs some kind of text or information to reveal a profession. Just looking at a city shouldn’t be enough.’
’…Could it be those rings?’
Su Chen squinted. After staring for a long time, he finally found a clue. Strange symbols were sparsely engraved on the surfaces of the metallic, semi-circular rings.
They were widely dispersed, and only at a specific point in their rotation did they align, as if pre-programmed, to form a single line of text.
’So that’s it…’ Su Chen murmured. ’A Morning Star Tier profession… It doesn’t get any higher than that.’
Unlike others, who couldn’t do anything even if they knew about a profession, he had his panel. As long as the information was logged, he would profit from it.
For a profession of this Tier, even the scraps that might fall through its fingers would be more than enough to sustain him.
’If I could take on the profession ahead of time, or even just temporarily… even just getting a tiny peek would make this trip worthwhile.’
’This trip was worth it, after all.’ Su Chen reined in his turbulent emotions.
Only one of the profession’s requirements was recorded on the metal rings. He stared for a long while longer, but his panel showed no further reaction.
’A pity…’ he thought greedily. ’The more complete the information I uncover, the higher the chance of triggering an emotional response.’
’I wonder how many requirements a profession of this level has… tsk, tsk…’ Su Chen calculated. ’This first one, Profound Purple Talent, is already frightening. I’ve never even heard of such a level.’
’Since this requirement is engraved on the metal rings, there might be more information within Yingfeng City…’ The thought made Su Chen’s desire to enter the city stronger than ever.
’Others can’t decipher it, but I can!’
“Old Su? Brother Su? Uncle Su, are you okay?” Du Yu asked cautiously, his heart pounding as he watched the changes in Su Chen’s expression.
“I’m fine…” Su Chen snapped out of it, letting out a breath. “Ying Feng really is something else,” he said admiringly. “Truly a magnificent megacity.”
’You don’t look impressed,’ Du Yu thought privately. ’You look like you want to devour Yingfeng City whole.’
Du Yu grumbled to himself. The others were still chattering excitedly and hadn’t noticed Su Chen’s odd behavior.
“Everyone, we’re about to arrive in Ying Feng. We will be stopping at the public docks…”
Gu Bing had come over to explain the procedures for after they landed.
Su Chen listened distractedly, his gaze repeatedly drifting through the porthole toward Ying Feng.
’Morning Star Tier, Great Venerable Red Flame Thunder Resonator!’
……
Ying Feng was now right before them. The airship slowed, and as they drew nearer, the passengers felt increasingly minuscule.
A considerable number of airships were converging from all directions. Below them, columns of armored vehicles stretched out in lines, disappearing into the fog.
’Even though the fog isolates it from the world and is fraught with danger, a unique way of life has formed here,’ Su Chen mused, taking it all in.
Their airship waited outside for a moment, apparently for an identity check. Afterward, it bypassed the long queue of other vessels and proceeded directly into Ying Feng.
It came to a stop in an open-air dock at the city’s edge.
“Wait! Don’t disembark yet…”
Gu Bing shouted upon seeing a number of people already gathered at the ramp. “We still need to register your identities, or the Inspector Guard will arrest you.”
Many of the others hadn’t moved. They watched the group clustered at the ramp and couldn’t help but chuckle derisively.
The faces of those gathered at the ramp flushed. They were all top students from Southwind Academy, but most came from ordinary backgrounds.
They had learned the basics about Ying Feng during the voyage, but they were ignorant of such details.
BUZZ—
The ramp hummed as it lowered. Officials in earth-yellow uniforms were already waiting outside—personnel from the Bureau of Population Management.
Gu Bing went to meet them. The lead official, who had initially seemed somewhat indifferent, immediately straightened up and adopted a solemn expression upon seeing the badge Gu Bing presented.
“To our guests from Southwind City, please wait a moment. We are importing data and generating your identity codes…”
They connected to the airship’s database, verified Southwind’s official cryptographic key, and began transferring the passengers’ files.
“This is your personal identification card. Please keep it safe. And be sure to memorize the code on it.”
A transparent magnetic card ejected from a machine beside the official, who handed it to Su Chen.
Su Chen took it, gave it a quick glance, then tucked it into his breast pocket.
“This must be the simplified process, probably because we have the Judicial Court’s endorsement. My dad said that when he came here, they were searched inside and out three or four times…” Du Yu took his magnetic card and carefully put it away.
“Judge Wang!” Gu Bing suddenly called out from outside the airship. The sound of synchronized, heavy footsteps followed, and everyone turned to look, holding their breath.
It was a squad of Judges clad in black armor. Each one stood two meters tall, but their leader was even more imposing, built like a small mountain.
“Where is it?” the man’s voice was deep and muffled.
“This way.” Gu Bing led the man inside. The onlookers subconsciously parted, watching the squad head into the depths of the airship.
’Are they here to transport the Black Tuo Statue?’
Su Chen guessed. And sure enough, it wasn’t long before the group of Judges emerged, carrying a large metal case.
Suddenly, the crowd’s chatter died down. The imposing leader scanned the group, his voice low and rumbling. “Which one of you is Su Chen?”
Su Chen?
No one spoke, but the crowd’s involuntary glances gave away Su Chen’s location.
“So you’re Su Chen?” The imposing man looked him over, his eyes filled with scrutiny and curiosity.
Su Chen frowned slightly. ’I haven’t even officially arrived in Ying Feng, but my reputation has preceded me?’
“Judge Wang?” Gu Bing stepped forward, moving to stand in front of Su Chen. “This Black Tuo Statue was confiscated by Chief Judge Xia. It would be best to get it back to him as soon as possible. We wouldn’t want any… accidents on the road.”
“Elder Xia…”
At the mention of that name, the imposing man’s cheek twitched. He turned on his heel and walked away.
