My Servant System - Chapter 1571 1570: Two Different Tales

“Yes, it really isn’t something that they are known for, especially Cimeriesa men, but at the same time anyone would be surprised to find that something they’ve come to anticipate every single day was suddenly gone.
What really made me laugh about all that though was how he seemed to actually want it back, yet whenever I asked him he never could give me a solid answer. Such a popular man yet he never really realized that, and on top of that he never once seemed to understand what made him so popular.”
“So did you ‘show’ him immediately, or..?”
The older Demoness tossed a smirk my way that told me quite a bit, the amusement and wryness to her expression causing me to chuckle as I shrugged, though she soon explained more and helped fill in the details.
“Bakari actually had the nerve to start poking around for some of my friends again. He wanted the leaner, boisterous and overly happy Ully first, then wanted to try to get the quieter and colder Jasmine to come back to him too.
If I wasn’t so adamant that he was going to be my man he would have ended up with both of them, but I pulled some more strings and had us assigned together for a standard assignment. He needed to do some research and copy down the runes and whatever else we found at a newly discovered ruin, and I needed to keep him safe and get us to and from there as cheaply and safely as possible.
It was – as far as I was concerned – my one and only chance to make him realize what I was feeling and that he should stick with me. At first I was quite stupid and tried to become a mix of Ully and Jasmine since clearly they had something he liked, but… trying to make boisterous and cold work was obviously impossible and I just made a fool of myself.
The journey to the ruins was simple enough, but it was a disaster for me. That mess up cost me a lot of downtime, and the moment we were at the ruins he was all business. Few monsters, only one small group of bandits, no other distractions…
It made it impossible for me to find moments to talk since he was so busy all the time. That was why I was curious about him and found him so… attractive, but it was costing me. Spent most of that time thinking up new strategies only for it all to fly out the window when we came back to the Inn nearby and he got a little too tipsy.”
Her lips curled into a small smile as she stared out the window, her eyes no longer seeing the monsters attempting to reach our walls but instead reliving the past; for Anput and I, it was much the same, our minds preoccupied with imagining what a drunk Bakari could be capable of and wondering if that meant he made the first move… or if Kavya was every bit the manipulator that a Beliali was meant to be.

“There’s got to be close to a thousand of them here…”
My murmur caused Leone to nod as she fiddled with her gear once again, making sure everything was in place before she uncorked a small vial and let the purple liquid slide down her throat in a single gulp.
“Well… That just means I can unwind a little. Get some of this excess energy out…”
That made her frown, and with a smirk I leaned over to brush off the nonexistent droplet on the corner of her mouth, loving how she blushed hard before going completely red as I murmured “And you can help me get the rest out when we get back…”
Patting her cheek, I turned towards the wall again and stared at all of the warriors that were standing atop it, slinging spells and shooting arrows into the horde as they kept it at bay; it was fascinating to see, and it was a reminder of what had once been.
Whilst we were few in number, all of the Demons on the wall were showing off just how superior they were compared to most of the other races in the Empire, their large Cores allowing them to sling spells with ease that would have been considered high grade for most others.
And when they were feeling their Cores trickling down to a third remaining, they drew their blades and dropped from the wall without hesitation, landing behind the shield wall and springing into action as they stabbed whatever got close enough.
Most accepted some of the spears, halberds and other longer ranged weapons the moment they were there, wielding them proficiently and creating a wave of metal that the monsters simply couldn’t break through.
Strapping the shield onto my arm and making sure it was completely secured, I did my own double checks before accepting the uncorked potion Leone handed me, drinking it down without even waiting to hear what it was and then immediately stepping off of the wall.
Since I was already brimming with energy, I wanted to take my spot down here and begin systemically clearing these monsters out rather than being smart and bombarding them with magic from above.
Besides, since this was where my forte resided anyways I just decided to play into my strength and take command of the soldiers already down here; the Demons gave way for me and the various other adventurers and members of the militia that wanted to aid in the defense of our home looked to me for guidance, something that made my heart swell with pride.
That wasn’t to say that I was forgoing magic in its entirety since that would be idiotic, so I started off by spreading an aegis of Light Mana in front of us before blanketing everyone in a thin cocoon of Light Mana that acted as a Mana Cloak, enhancing their abilities just a little bit.
Then I used a single wave of light to slice open a large wave of monsters, giving me the space I needed to push forwards just a tad and begin taking the fight to the monsters… and also giving them a singular point to focus on, making things easier for us in the end.
