My Werewolf System - Chapter 1473: Against the Frenzied Alpha

Chapter 1473: Against the Frenzied Alpha
The massive icebergs that had erupted from the ground towered around Kai, sealing him in. Each jagged wall gleamed under the moonlight, thick and solid, their sheer size enough to intimidate even the fiercest fighter. Not long ago, Kai had been locked in a brutal head-to-head battle with Lupus, their feral strikes shaking the battlefield.
Lupus had used this very technique before, forcing Kai into close-quarters combat by surrounding him with ice and restricting his movement. The tactic was simple but effective: trap the Shapeshifter, smother his speed, and keep him locked in.
Despite being hit several times in that cage of frost, Kai had continued to fight ferociously, his body enduring blows most couldn’t withstand. In the end, he had smashed his way out, shattering the ice in an explosion of force. Their duel had carried them across the battlefield until it spilled into the open, where everyone could witness the clash of titans.
Now, once again, the icebergs stood in his path. Only this time, Lupus had been more cunning. He hadn’t just blocked the way forward, he had created a full prison, the barriers rising in a circle around Kai, enclosing him completely. If Kai were calm, if he had full control over himself, he might have found a clever way out. But he wasn’t calm. The full moon gnawed at his mind, instincts raging louder than thought.
So instead, he did what instinct told him: he attacked. Again and again, his massive claws tore at the ice. Every strike shook the ground, cracks spreading, chunks falling away. It was only a matter of time before he broke free.
“They’ve trapped Kai in there, and then they ran away!” Marie exclaimed, her voice tight with confusion. “Why would they do that? Shouldn’t we go help him?”
“No!” she suddenly corrected herself, spinning to face the others. Her tone sharpened, fear tightening her throat. “This is what I was afraid of. All of you need to leave, right now! The moment Kai breaks out, he won’t chase Lupus or the others. He isn’t himself anymore. He’ll come after you!”
Her words struck like a whip. In her heart, Marie wondered if she had brought this about herself. She had seen the vision, the terrible glimpse of the future. If she had stayed with Ylva, perhaps she could have prevented this outcome. Perhaps she could have stopped them all from escaping. But she hadn’t. She had tried to prevent the vision by leaving to warn the others, and in doing so, she may have ensured it would happen. The image of Gary fighting head-to-head against Kai burned in her mind.
“Please, Gary,” Marie urged. “You have to leave!”
Gary’s eyes narrowed as he surveyed the scene. He saw the crumbling ice barrier, the trembling allies gathered around him, and the weight of the full moon pressing down on them all. He understood in an instant why Kai would attack him as well as the others. On this night, with the true Alpha form awakened, instincts would override reason. The beast inside Kai would not stop.
“Everyone, get back inside the restaurant!” Gary ordered, his voice cutting through the panic. “Board yourselves in and don’t come out for any reason. Recover as much as you can, and no matter what happens out here, do not step outside!”
“Gary, what are you doing?” Marie shouted. She could see it in his eyes, he wasn’t planning to run.
“You’re thinking too foolishly, Marie,” Gary replied, his voice low but steady. “If we run, even if I could buy time or hide from Kai, what about the others? What about everyone who fought for the Howlers? Kai would end up slaughtering them. And then what? The Howlers would be destroyed, and Kai… Kai would never forgive himself once he regained control. No, we can’t abandon them. We have only one option left. Those of us who can fight have to face Kai head-on.”
Marie clenched her fists. His words pierced her because she knew he was right.
Gary turned to assess the fighters still standing. Crawley was badly wounded, struggling to even stay upright. Apollo looked half-dead, having barely survived his earlier encounter. Innu had recovered a sliver of energy, but nowhere near enough to face someone like Kai. Numba and the rest were utterly exhausted, their bodies spent.
That left only a handful. Blake had already retreated inside the restaurant when the Ironfang had left, leaving just Marie, Gary himself, and Adam Law, the enigmatic warrior who had yet to say a single word, his eyes unreadable. Gary alone still had reserves of strength, his [Abyssal Warlord] class allowing him to recover quickly even in the darkness.
“Xin, all of you,” Gary said firmly, “you need to get inside as well. I know you’re strong, but Kai’s speed will be too much for you. He’ll pick you off before you can even react. Right now, I can’t risk your lives. Marie, this is the best option, and you know it.”
Marie swallowed hard. In her vision, she had seen it clearly, herself, Gary, and Adam standing against Kai. No matter how much she tried to change things, fate seemed to be pulling them into the very moment she had feared.
Without further protest, the three of them leapt down from the restaurant’s roof, landing with soft thuds outside the ice barrier. They spread out, waiting, every sense straining.
“I need you both to hurt him badly enough that he stops moving,” Marie said, her voice trembling despite her resolve. “Or at least give me an opening. If I can grab him and turn him back, he’ll still be dangerous, but weaker than this. That’s our only chance.”
Gary nodded. Adam Law said nothing, his expression as stoic as ever. He simply stood at Gary’s side, prepared.
Then, with a deafening crack, one of the icebergs collapsed, shattering into pieces. From within the jagged cage of frost, a shadow burst forth. The wolf emerged, larger and darker than before, its eyes blazing with untamed fury.
Kai.
He landed heavily, claws digging into the ground. Slowly, his head turned. His glowing gaze locked onto the three figures standing before him. He bared his teeth, lips curling into a savage snarl. The sound rumbled through the night like thunder.
And then he crouched, muscles tightening, ready to strike.
