My Werewolf System - Chapter 1542: Do You Want To Join (Part 1)

Chapter 1542: Do You Want To Join (Part 1)
The pounding question lingered above their heads like a storm cloud that refused to break: Why had they been sent here? Why this place, why this moment, what was the true purpose behind it?
Again and again their minds circled back to the same possibility, the quest. It had to be tied to the quest. It was the only clear direction they’d been given, the single thread that pulled them forward. That was why they were making their way to the Redwing Kingdom. It wasn’t choice so much as necessity.
But now, by some strange twist of fate, they had stumbled into completing a portion of it without even realizing.
Steve and the other werewolves moved swiftly around the battlefield. Their clawed hands worked with disturbing efficiency as they dealt with the remains of the slain adventurers. It wasn’t mindless desecration; there was purpose in it. Gary watched closely, unsettled but fascinated. The bodies were being chopped apart, piece by piece, then sealed away inside strange storage containers. The sight alone was chilling, and yet, in the world they were trapped in, it was no real surprise.
Emergency rations. That’s what Gary thought they were preparing. A grim practicality. Food for a later day. And he couldn’t bring himself to judge them. He had eaten his fair share of humans when pushed to the edge.
“Just wait here for a while,” Steve had told them. “If you’re hurt, see one of my men. They’ll take care of you.”
So the three of them sat together, separate from the pack, left with only their thoughts and the weight of what had just happened.
Gary was the first to break the silence. “Did the two of you get the quest completion as well? At least for one part of it?”
Both Lupus and Kai nodded.
“It was right when that Steve guy showed up,” Lupus said, his voice low, thoughtful. “And did you notice? He’s an Alpha too. All of these guys, this whole group, they’re his pack. With us being Omegas, he might just see us as strays, looking to join.”
It was only a theory, but not an impossible one. For now, though, Steve didn’t seem in any rush to force the issue. He was calm, patient, even after revealing his nature. And in truth, there was something strangely comforting about being around others who shared their issue, their instincts. After what they had just endured, after how little they understood of this world, maybe it wasn’t the worst thing to stay close. Maybe, for once, safety was possible.
“So do you think this Alpha is one of the two werewolves we were meant to find?” Gary asked, still chewing on the thought. “If we follow him, maybe we’ll eventually find the other.”
“About that,” Kai interrupted, his tone sharper, his eyes focused. “I have another theory. The wording of the quest was always strange, ‘find the other werewolves.’ It never said individuals. I don’t think it was talking about just people. I think it’s about packs.”
Lupus tilted his head, considering. Gary stayed silent, letting Kai continue.
“It makes sense, right? Look at what it says now. One out of two packs found. That’s the system’s update. Not people, packs. And remember what we know about history. Whenever two Alphas existed at the same time, it always ended the same way. They fought. Every time.”
Gary’s thoughts darkened at the reminder. Two Alphas couldn’t coexist in peace. Not in history, not in instinct.
Kai leaned forward, his voice quiet but heavy with meaning. “Didn’t you say the Bookkeeper was linked to the medallion? What if this medallion is more than just some artifact? What if it’s a record? A record of another time period, a time when two Alphas went against each other. That could be what the system’s showing us. That’s why we need to find the two packs.”
“But this isn’t just showing us,” Lupus countered. His tone carried a growl, like the thought unsettled him deeply. “We’re being forced to take part. This isn’t the past. It’s not just a memory. If we’re involved, if we’re fighting alongside or against them, then we’re changing everything. This… this could all be real.”
Kai shrugged, though unease flickered in his expression. “Maybe. But if it is, then the next step, the outcome, that’s for the system to decide, not us.”
The weight of his words settled over them. Half the quest was done, but instead of relief, it only stirred more questions. What would happen when they found the second pack? Would they be forced into the inevitable clash of Alphas? And if history dictated the outcome, would they even survive it?
The silence stretched until Steve’s group returned, their work finished. The smell of blood and steel still hung heavy in the air, but the werewolves moved with an ease born from habit. Their leader, the Alpha in brown fur, strode toward them, his expression sharp yet faintly amused.
“You three don’t seem nearly as rattled as I expected,” Steve said, his voice carrying that natural authority all Alphas held. “Most of your kind would be shaken to the core after seeing something like that. Especially those who were nearly served up as ornaments for the rich.”
He smirked, letting the joke hang. “But I suppose that’s a good thing. Means we don’t have to coddle you the way we do with others.”
Gary, Kai, and Lupus stayed quiet, each waiting, each weighing his words.
Steve extended a hand, his eyes narrowing with curiosity. “If you’ve got nowhere to go, why don’t you come with us for a while? Don’t worry, I’m not forcing you into my pack. Not unless you choose it.”
