“Are these all the Devil Fruits Tesoro collected?”
Shin examined the dozen or so Devil Fruits laid out before him. These were the ones Doflamingo had managed to acquire. But Doflamingo wouldn’t keep them for himself, so he’d had someone rush them over to Shin immediately.
“Doflamingo knows his place,” Hancock commented.
It seemed Doflamingo was smart enough to know what was off-limits. He wasn’t stupid enough to risk his life over some Devil Fruits. If he’d taken them and Shin never found out—maybe he could’ve gotten away with it. But if Shin discovered the theft, he’d be a dead man.
“Are they all Zoan-type Devil Fruits?” Robin asked, looking at them.
Though she hadn’t examined them closely, she could tell from the patterns that they were all Zoan-types. The patterns of Zoan, Paramecia, and Logia Devil Fruits were all different. Anyone with experience could tell them apart.
“Yeah, not very valuable. Give them to your mother to handle,” Shin said to Robin.
“Give them to my mother?”
Robin looked at Shin with a questioning gaze.
“Yeah. See if anyone on the ship wants one. Have Olvia hand them out.”
Robin nodded, then took the Devil Fruits and left.
Now only Shin, Hancock, and Kalifa remained. For some reason, Kalifa felt deeply uneasy.
“Kalifa.”
“Captain, what can I do for you?” Kalifa felt the unease in her heart grow stronger.
“You were sent by the Five Elders, weren’t you?”
Shin directly confronted Kalifa. He was done with her being a spy—he wanted to subdue her completely.
Kalifa’s heart skipped a beat. She immediately took a few steps back, her scalp tingling as she looked at Shin, extremely nervous.
————
‘What do I do? My cover’s been blown. What the hell should I do now??’
“Uh, Captain, I don’t know what you’re talking about, I…”
“Still trying to deny it? You think you can hide anything from Shin?” Hancock’s sword was already drawn, its blade resting on Kalifa’s neck.
Feeling the cold steel of Hancock’s blade against her throat, Kalifa froze completely. With a sword at your neck, who would risk moving? One twitch and she’d be dead.
“Are you really going to lie to my face? Tell the truth and you might have a chance. Keep lying to me, and you can imagine how this ends.”
Shin’s sharp gaze was fixed on Kalifa, making her breath catch in her throat. She felt as if she was about to be killed.
Kalifa was trapped. If she told the truth, she was dead. Once her cover was blown, nobody would let her live. Shin would kill her, and so would the Five Elders.
But looking at Shin, he seemed to already know the critical details—like he had all the pieces of the puzzle.
Given her current situation, staying silent meant certain death. Speaking up at least gave her a tiny chance of survival. The choice was obvious. She had to come clean.
————
“I am a spy sent by the Five Elders. They wanted me to earn Captain Shin’s trust and then steal the Op-Op Fruit.”
Kalifa valued her life, so she confessed everything. She wasn’t that loyal to the Five Elders anyway. She couldn’t bring herself to die for them.
“I’ve told you everything. What do you plan to do with me?” Kalifa had composed herself by now. If there really was no way out, then death was inevitable.
“If I spare you, what would you do?” Shin asked, looking at Kalifa.
Hearing Shin’s words, a glimmer of hope suddenly appeared in Kalifa’s heart. She looked at Shin with hopeful eyes.
“Captain, you’ll spare me?”
“That depends on your choice,” Shin said calmly.
Though Shin didn’t say it explicitly, Kalifa wasn’t a fool. She of course understood what he meant.
“I will be loyal to the captain forever,” Kalifa said firmly.
“How can we believe you?” Hancock asked Kalifa, not trusting her.
“I can’t prove it to the captain and vice-captain right now. But time can prove everything.”
After Kalifa finished speaking, she waited for Shin’s judgment. She really had no way to make Shin believe she had truly surrendered.
————
“Alright, I’ll give you that time. You can continue to contact the Five Elders. You understand what I mean, right?”
She nodded without hesitation. Kalifa knew her life was saved. But from now on, she had been turned. She would have to be a double agent.
“Kalifa, you’re a smart woman. I hope you don’t do anything foolish in the future.”
Shin came to Kalifa and pinched her cheek. Kalifa’s face showed a hint of shame and annoyance. It was the first time her face had been pinched like this.
“Captain, I know what to do,” Kalifa said.
“Serving me is far better than staying loyal to the Five Elders. Eternal youth, eternal life—I can give you all of that. You’ll realize eventually that you came out ahead in this deal.”
Shin patted Kalifa’s shoulder, then walked outside.
Only Hancock and Kalifa remained in the hall, and Hancock’s sword was still at Kalifa’s neck.
————
“Um, Vice-Captain, can you let me go now?”
Kalifa was a bit scared to move. She knew exactly how powerful Hancock was. Until Hancock lowered her weapon, Kalifa wasn’t budging an inch.
“Even though Shin trusts you, I’ll be watching your every move. If you try to betray us, YOU’RE DEAD.”
Hancock threatened Kalifa.
“I won’t. Vice-Captain, you should know—I have no other choice now,” Kalifa said.
It was true. Kalifa had genuinely surrendered, and there was no going back. Even if she had the opportunity, she might not return to the Five Elders anyway.
The reason was simple—life here was better.
Most importantly, Shin’s power was overwhelming. He could call down a meteor and obliterate Enies Lobby in one attack. And after wiping out Enies Lobby, the Five Elders didn’t even retaliate. That told you everything about which side had the real power.
“I hope so.” Hancock sheathed her sword, then gave Kalifa another deep look.
Facing Hancock’s meaningful gaze, Kalifa took it calmly. She had a clear conscience now and didn’t need to be afraid.
Kalifa felt that this might actually be a good thing for her. She could finally breathe easy. From now on, she didn’t have to walk on eggshells. Before, with her cover identity, she’d been constantly paranoid on the ship, terrified of blowing her cover.
Now that her identity was exposed, she had genuinely become part of the Kuja Pirates, and the weight on her shoulders was finally gone.
With the pressure gone, Kalifa felt her mood improve.
