“Shin, I’ll be heading back. Come visit the Fourth Division when you have the time.”
Retsu Unohana smiled and waved to Shin before departing the Second Division barracks. The barracks themselves, however, were in a state of disarray.
Yoruichi Shihōin was currently sprawled on the floor, looking for all the world like she’d been grievously injured.
“You just watched me get bullied and didn’t even lift a finger to help your own vice-captain,” Yoruichi grumbled, pushing herself up and glaring at Shin.
“Sorry, but Retsu isn’t just ‘someone else’ to me. You should be grateful I didn’t team up with her to take you down,” Shin said, shooting Yoruichi a sideways glance.
“Alright, you’re in charge of cleaning this place up.”
“ARE YOU SERIOUS? YOU’RE MAKING ME DO CHORES?” Yoruichi asked, unable to believe her ears.
While it was true that the mess was a result of her fight with Unohana, that woman was just as much to blame. Besides, Yoruichi was still stewing over Shin’s comment about Unohana not being ‘someone else’ to him.
“I didn’t say ‘you’ had to do it. Can’t you just order some of your squad members to do it?”
Shin put down the documents he was holding and looked at Yoruichi, exasperated. Though he had assigned her the task, she could easily delegate it to any of the Soul Reapers in the Second Division.
“By the way, the Second Division’s funds are running a little low. I was wondering if you could approve a budget increase?”
Remembering something important, Shin suddenly turned to Yoruichi with a grin.
Normally, budget requests went through Yamamoto, but Shin knew just how tight-fisted the Captain-Commander was. To get any money out of him, you needed a mountain of paperwork with every possible justification…
But he had a walking bank right here, so why bother with the hassle??
Yoruichi was the richest girl he knew. As the current head of the Shihōin Clan—one of the Four Great Noble Clans of the Seireitei—money was the one thing she didn’t lack. The wealth they’d accumulated over countless years was so vast that her pocket change could probably fund the Second Division for a year.
“Hmph. So now you remember me!!” Yoruichi snorted, then fixed her gaze on him. “The Second Division is broke because you’ve been spending it all, haven’t you?”
“Ahem, I believe that’s slander.”
“Slander? I don’t need to slander you. Let me ask you, where did the money for Unohana’s gifts come from? And what about all those fancy meals you’ve been having? Don’t tell me it was from your salary—it’s not nearly high enough for that.” Yoruichi asked, crossing her arms and looking at Shin.
A significant portion of the Second Division’s budget had, in fact, been spent by Shin. If Yamamoto ever found out, he wouldn’t be fired, but he’d definitely get a stern warning. Of course, Shin had no intention of letting that happen.
“If you want me to give you money, fine, but you have to…”
“You’re not going to ask me to sell my body, are you? I’ll have you know, I have principles. No matter how much you offer, I will not compromise my integrity!”
Shin stood up and declared righteously, leaving Yoruichi’s mouth twitching uncontrollably.
“I’m not that kind of person. You’re the one with the dirty mind if that’s where your thoughts went.”
If it weren’t for the fact that she couldn’t beat him, Yoruichi would have taught him a lesson right then and there.
Even so, she transformed into her black cat form and lunged at him with a flurry of wild scratches.
Transforming into a cat was one of her unique abilities. Shin easily caught the small black cat and chuckled. “Alright, I was just joking. Don’t take it so seriously.”
He gently scratched the little cat’s belly.
“Damn it, let me go!” Yoruichi squirmed, continuing her frantic scratching, though it had no effect.
After struggling for a while to no avail, she resigned herself to her fate and glared at Shin with her big, cat-like eyes.
“Alright, what was the condition you were about to mention? The Second Division is really broke. I think I might have to go ask Unohana for a loan.” Shin said with a sigh.
Of course, he wasn’t really in that dire of a situation. Getting money was simple enough for him. He had plenty of treasure from the One Piece world stashed in his System Space. While the Berries were useless here, the gems could be exchanged for a fortune.
But Nami had laid claim to all of it… Getting anything from her would be a struggle. After all, Nami was a complete miser. Prying money from her hands was harder than climbing to the sky.
———————————
“You don’t need to borrow from her. I can give you the money, but you have to get me a birthday present,” Yoruichi said after transforming back.
“A birthday present? When’s your birthday??” Shin asked, puzzled.
Honestly, Shin had no idea when Yoruichi’s birthday was.
“You don’t even know my birthday? It’s in two days,” Yoruichi said, a little annoyed.
Even though she rarely remembered or celebrated her own birthday, the fact that Shin didn’t know felt like he didn’t care about her. The more she thought about it, the worse she felt, and her expression soured.
“Alright. When the day comes, I promise I’ll get you a gift you’ll be satisfied with.”
After a moment of thought, Shin nodded at Yoruichi.
“You’d better not be lying. And don’t you forget.”
After reminding Shin, Yoruichi took out a large sum of money and handed it to him.
“Alas, I can’t believe I’ve sunk to being a kept man,” Shin said with a dramatic sigh.
“DON’T TALK NONSENSE! I’M NOT ‘KEEPING’ YOU!” Yoruichi’s face turned beet red as she stared at Shin.
“Oh, that’s a shame. You know, being a kept man doesn’t sound so bad after all.”
Shin said shamelessly.
Yoruichi shot him a contemptuous look, then turned and left. As she walked away, Shin suddenly felt like he had forgotten something.
‘What was I forgetting?’ Shin tapped his head, then it hit him. He stood up and rushed outside, but by the time he got there, Yoruichi was gone.
“Sigh, I guess asking Yoruichi to help with my work is out. Looks like I’ll have to rely on myself in the end,” Shin sighed, shaking his head as he went back inside.
The work Unohana hadn’t finished still needed to be done. Otherwise, Yamamoto would be having a talk with him. While Shin didn’t care, he didn’t want to deal with the old man either.
He’d just use his Shadow Clone Jutsu and have the clones do it while he lazed around on the tatami mat.
