On his way back to the Second Division, Shin had a sudden realization. Of course. This string of soul disappearances… It had to be related to Aizen.
‘If Aizen’s involved, then I should pay him a visit.’
Shin donned a mask, left a Shadow Clone behind in the Second Division to cover for him, and then headed for Rukongai.
———————————
Upon arriving, Shin frowned and expanded his senses. He had already memorized Aizen’s Spiritual Pressure. Unless Aizen could completely suppress every last trace of it, Shin would find him.
Aizen was a master of concealment, always cautious and never one to reveal his Spiritual Pressure carelessly. Finding him wouldn’t be a walk in the park.
Still, Shin was certain Aizen was in Rukongai right now; he couldn’t sense his presence in the Seireitei. And at this point in time, Aizen wouldn’t have any reason to be in Hueco Mundo.
‘There you are, you sly fox. I’ve got you now.’ A faint smile touched Shin’s lips.
Finding Aizen hadn’t been easy, but in the end, he couldn’t hide forever. Shin had finally cornered him.
‘Now that I’ve found you, there’s no escape.’
Shin used Yomotsu Hirasaka, instantly appearing in one of the more chaotic districts of Rukongai. The sheer size of Rukongai, far larger than the Seireitei, made finding a single person a monumental task. Aizen probably never imagined someone’s senses could be so powerful as to pinpoint him from across such a vast area.
“Well, well, if it isn’t Fifth Division’s Vice-Captain Aizen. What are you up to? Let’s see now… I never would have guessed that the kind, gentle Vice-Captain Aizen would be preying on common souls in Rukongai.”
Shin’s taunting voice came from behind Aizen, whose expression turned cold. He slowly turned his head.
“So you saw… Who are you??”
Even now, Aizen remained calm. Being discovered was a possibility he had accounted for. If such an accident occurred, he would simply eliminate the witness.
“That mask… you’re the criminal the Seireitei has been hunting, aren’t you?”
Aizen looked at the mask on Shin’s face and suddenly recalled the centuries-old, unsolved case of an intruder who had broken into the Central 46 Compound and killed the head of the Tsunayashiro clan—a highly dangerous individual.
“That’s me. So, feeling like capturing me and earning some brownie points?”
Shin walked toward Aizen, glancing down at the severely injured blonde girl on the ground. His 360-degree vision caught not only the girl but also a small, silver-haired boy hiding nearby.
‘Interesting… Gin Ichimaru and Rangiku Matsumoto, is it?’
This was the incident that fueled Gin’s hatred for Aizen, leading him to spend years by Aizen’s side, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. It was a shame Aizen had the Hōgyoku on his side.
Gin failed to kill him and was killed in return. Still, Gin’s Zanpakuto, Shinso, was impressive—the fastest of them all. Even if it didn’t reach 500 times the speed of sound, it was fast enough to wound Aizen, which was no small feat.
“Captain Shin… is that you?”
Aizen suddenly asked, as if he had seen through Shin’s disguise.
“Oh? I’m surprised you could recognize me even like this, Aizen.” Shin’s face showed genuine surprise.
He never thought Aizen would be able to identify him. Even Retsu Unohana, who knew him best, would probably struggle to see through his disguise.
“So it is you, Captain Shin.”
A glint appeared in Aizen’s eyes. He had only been guessing, but his intense observation of Shin over the years paid off. Though Shin kept a low profile, his accomplishments were unforgettable. In Aizen’s mind, he was a high-risk individual.
“Captain Shin, if this little incident were to get out, I imagine you’d be in a far worse position than I would,” Aizen said with a placid smile, as if he held all the cards. He even entertained the thought of recruiting Shin.
“Why don’t you join me, Captain Shin? Together, we could build our own empire.”
“Heh.” Shin chuckled dryly. “Aizen, you’re not worthy of partnering with me.”
Aizen’s eyes flickered. Shin thought he wasn’t worthy? Was he underestimating him?
“You think I’m looking down on you? Actually, you’re right.”
Shin’s figure vanished from Aizen’s sight. The next moment, a flash of steel erupted from behind, piercing clean through Aizen’s torso. Looking down at the Zanpakuto blade protruding from his chest, a look of pure shock crossed Aizen’s face.
While Aizen was undoubtedly a brilliant strategist, perhaps the most intelligent antagonist of all, he was also incredibly arrogant. He believed that aside from Head-Captain Yamamoto, no one in the Seireitei could threaten him. Yet here he was, impaled in their very first exchange.
“I’m sure a small wound like this is nothing to you, Vice-Captain Aizen,” Shin said with a faint smile.
“Heh… as expected of Captain Shin. Your strength is far greater than I anticipated. But that’s all it is.”
Even now, Aizen could still laugh. He gripped his Zanpakuto, Kyoka Suigetsu, ignored his wound, and spun around to counterattack.
Shin pulled his blade from Aizen’s body and blocked the incoming strike.
“A decent amount of force, but just decent. You said ‘that’s all it is,’ didn’t you, Aizen? Then let’s see what you’re really made of.”
Shin’s voice was calm. The current Aizen wasn’t nearly enough of a threat. Shin was just toying with him.
<“Shatter, Kyoka Suigetsu!”>
Aizen released his Shikai. Shin just stood there, watching with a calm expression. It was just Kyoka Suigetsu. If he wanted to hypnotize Shin, his spiritual power couldn’t be too far below Shin’s. But unfortunately for Aizen, the gap between them was as wide as the sky.
[System, copy Aizen’s powers.] Shin instructed mentally.
The prompt required a Divine Replication Card, but after hundreds of years in the Soul Society, Shin had more than enough to spare.
In an instant, all of Aizen’s abilities, along with his immense Spiritual Pressure, became Shin’s. He now also had complete mastery over Kyoka Suigetsu.
“YOU’VE ALREADY LOST, CAPTAIN SHIN!!”
A smile appeared on Aizen’s face. Once caught in Kyoka Suigetsu, his opponent was at his mercy. His Zanpakuto was truly formidable. Even if you knew its ability, once you fell for it, death was the only outcome.
“You’re celebrating a bit too soon. You really think I don’t know the ability of your Kyoka Suigetsu?”
Shin watched Aizen with amusement, enjoying the way his expression began to shift.
