Gin arrived at the 2nd Division barracks and was immediately met by a rugged, fierce-looking figure. The hem of his captain’s haori was jagged and torn.
A small, pink-haired girl was perched on his shoulder, looking impossibly cute.
“Kenpachi Zaraki.” Gin’s brow furrowed at the sight of him.
The Kenpachi before him had no scar on his left cheek yet—he hadn’t had his fateful encounter with Unohana. His hairstyle was also not quite so… unique.
“You’re the captain of the 3rd Division?” Kenpachi’s fierce eyes locked onto Gin, his fighting spirit flaring as he drew his Zanpakutō.
“Want to have a fight, 3rd Division Captain?” Kenpachi swung his massive blade, the intense battlelust rolling off him making Gin slightly uncomfortable.
“Kenny, aren’t you here to challenge Captain Shin?” the adorable Yachiru piped up.
It had taken them forever to find the 2nd Division barracks. They were both hopelessly bad with directions and had gotten lost multiple times. It was only after a great deal of effort that Yachiru had managed to get directions.
Even that had been a challenge. Kenpachi’s intimidating appearance sent most people running for the hills, making it impossible to get close enough to ask for help.
“No rush. My goal is to challenge every captain. It doesn’t matter who I fight first.”
Kenpachi’s ferocious expression was fixed on Gin. It was clear he wasn’t going to let him go easily.
“Apologies, but I have no intention of fighting you. Step aside.”
Gin had come to challenge Shin, not this Kenpachi Zaraki. He didn’t know much about the man, but he knew he was no pushover. After all, even Captain-Commander Yamamoto had taken him under his wing and held him in high regard. Kenpachi had sealed a part of his own strength.
The eyepatch he wore sealed most of his spiritual pressure. If he released it, Kenpachi’s power would surpass that of most captains.
Of course, raw spiritual pressure didn’t decide a battle. True combat strength was a complex equation, unless one’s spiritual pressure reached Aizen’s level.
Aizen’s spiritual pressure was, without a doubt, one of the strongest in the entire Soul Society.
“Heh, I want to fight you.”
Kenpachi had Yachiru hop down to the side and then attacked, completely ignoring Gin’s wishes.
Gin’s brow furrowed. He used Shunpo to dodge Kenpachi’s strike, then drew his own Zanpakutō, his gaze turning cold.
‘Is this guy deliberately trying to cause trouble?’
Then a thought occurred to Gin, and he relaxed. This was actually a good thing. He hadn’t wanted to challenge Shin in the first place. If Kenpachi was here to stir things up, maybe he wouldn’t have to fight Shin after all. This was a blessing in disguise.
At that thought, the coldness in Gin’s eyes vanished. He almost felt like this brute wasn’t so bad after all. He had inadvertently helped him out.
Kenpachi didn’t think about any of that. He sneered at the short blade in Gin’s hand and charged again.
“You should get a new sword. That tiny thing is pathetic.”
“Shoot to Kill, Shinsō.”
Danger. A terrifying sense of danger washed over Kenpachi. His reaction was swift—he dodged the moment he felt the threat.
He managed to avoid the piercing strike of Shinsō, but his clothes were still torn, and a fresh wound appeared on his body.
“Captain Kenpachi, I’d advise you not to underestimate anyone,” Gin said calmly.
“Hahahaha! Interesting.”
Kenpachi, though slightly injured, showed no fear. He charged at Gin again. Even with Gin’s Shikai, hitting Kenpachi was no easy task.
As for his Bankai, Gin wouldn’t use it so easily. He didn’t want to reveal its true ability. Sometimes, hiding your Zanpakutō’s power was crucial.
Take Kyōka Suigetsu, for example. If its ability were exposed and everyone was on guard against it, its threat would be greatly diminished.
“What are you two doing in front of the 2nd Division barracks?”
Soi Fon emerged from within, her voice sharp and cold as she questioned Gin and Kenpachi.
If they wanted to fight, they could go somewhere else. Causing trouble at the 2nd Division’s doorstep? Was this a provocation?
Soi Fon would not tolerate it. If anyone was looking for trouble, she would teach them a lesson they wouldn’t forget.
“Ah, if it isn’t Soi Fon.” Gin sheathed his Zanpakutō, having no intention of continuing the fight.
Seeing that Soi Fon was angry, Gin didn’t want any more trouble. He looked at Kenpachi with a faint, mocking smile.
“You can’t blame me for this. I was just here to pay Captain Shin a visit. It was Captain Kenpachi who blocked my way and attacked me. I was only defending myself.”
Kenpachi didn’t deny it. That was exactly what had happened.
“Kenpachi Zaraki, you have some nerve, bringing your trouble here,” Soi Fon said, glaring at him angrily.
“And you—what do you want with Captain Shin?” Soi Fon had no love for Gin either.
“I’ve come to seek a match with Captain Shin. Is he available?” Gin asked.
“You think you’re worthy of seeking a match with Captain Shin?”
Soi Fon was not holding back. She was already being merciful by not attacking him on the spot. If he kept this up, she might just lose her temper.
In her eyes, her Captain Shin was not to be challenged. Someone like Gin was not worthy.
“I, too, wish to have a life-or-death battle with Captain Shin.”
Kenpachi also stated his intentions, his face taking on a bloodthirsty expression. Unlike Gin, who spoke of a “match,” Kenpachi wanted a real fight. When it came to battle, Kenpachi’s personality was indeed more ferocious, fighting as if his life depended on it.
“Since you’re here to cause trouble, let’s see if you can get past me.”
Soi Fon would not allow just anyone to challenge Captain Shin. She was now prepared to teach these audacious challengers a lesson.
Feeling Soi Fon’s anger, Gin didn’t make a move. He knew he didn’t have to. Kenpachi would definitely step up. If he attacked Soi Fon, he would inevitably offend Shin Uzumaki. Although Gin had come to challenge Shin, it wasn’t his own choice—it was Aizen’s order, which he couldn’t refuse.
He didn’t want to lose Aizen’s trust, but he also didn’t want to get on Shin Uzumaki’s bad side. Attacking Soi Fon was out of the question. He’d just watch from the sidelines for now.
“With just you?” Kenpachi looked at Soi Fon with a hint of disdain. He didn’t feel like fighting her was much of a challenge.
He thought she was too weak. After all, just by looking at her, it was hard to tell how strong she really was. Her small stature made Kenpachi dismissive of her abilities.
