Oblivion's Heir: Rise of the Sovereign - Chapter 50: Aftermath

Chapter 50: Aftermath
His eyes fluttered slightly, and suddenly shot open.
Ren jolted awake with a pounding heart, but it soon subsided after looking around and finding out he was somewhere safe.
’My personality…’ The scenes were still vivid in his mind. The way he killed the pet of that abomination only after decapitating it and how he handled the fight and ignored Kade when he asked unnecessary things.
“Did I make a wrong choice?” Looking at his own battered body, he was astonished once again.
“Hah, even though I am still alive, it looks like I went too far this time.” With a sigh, he left the room in search of Kade, and it didn’t take long after he exited the building.
The reason being that as far as his eyes could see in this huge spherical dome, the only thing visible was destruction.
The stalls that he had seen were not present anymore.
As he moved towards the residence where he had met Kade the first time, hundreds of gazes landed on him.
Ignoring their reactions, Ren kept his pace while analyzing his current situation.
’Kade trusts me now, but my plan to escape this place has gone down the drain.’ He had gulped down the potion of regeneration for himself.
’Well, not exactly me… but yeah, at the end of the day, isn’t that also my own personality?’
Now he seriously wanted to just leave this place for good and forget about recovering Caleb’s arm.
Pondering, Ren glanced back at the times when his personality changed.
He could still remember the things that took place and he also recalled the pain from all the bruises, yet it felt as if the steering of his body when he fought was in someone else’s hands.
“And the Integration…” It was his second time using the Integration ability.
And it was different from the previous use because he didn’t lose consciousness.
“To be exact, my… alternate ego didn’t lose consciousness?” Muttering, he reached the exact same place where he had first met Kade, only to find two familiar faces.
Carter and Cooper.
The duo was astonished to find him, the man who had helped their leader and was keeping up with his prowess.
“Sir Kade is inside.” Nodding, Carter glanced at his brother and allowed him to go inside.
’Their eyes have respect for me, not admiration.’ All that trust he gained, only for the thing he came here for to be wasted by himself.
Kade sat in his chair, his left hand bandaged and slung around his neck for support.
“Did you break it?” Ren didn’t stand on ceremony and sat down opposite him as his focus rested upon his broken hand while keeping an eye on the shelves beside him.
“Yeah. But I have drunk some potions, so it should recover soon enough.” Kade decided not to tell Ren about the hole in his chest and ordered the others not to mention it either.
A strange silence fell in the room, making it awkward for Ren.
Thinking to distract himself, he soon remembered that the vermyrex that he had kept outside all this time should be still alive, hopefully.
’Don’t tell me it died too?’ After losing consciousness, he didn’t remember any further incidents.
’I-I am fine, prince.’ And it didn’t take long for a weak, rough voice to surface within his mind.
’Do you know something?’ Clearly, the current Kade didn’t look to be in the mood to explain what had happened, and he wasn’t familiar with anyone else besides him in this place, except for those two people who had ambushed him.
’Did they survive?’
The vermyrex’s response came soon enough, “Y-yes. That being exited from the same place it entered but it didn’t have one of its hands and was bleeding rapidly.”
His eyes widened and he immediately stood up, only to feel a sudden sharp pain in his back.
“Is something the issue?” The faction leader appeared quite confused by Ren’s actions, yet he didn’t press further after seeing the lack of response from the teenager sitting opposite him.
“It’s good that we didn’t have too many casualties.” Kade finally spoke, even though it was about the aftermath of the battle.
’What about the old—’ Ren bit his tongue before the thought could settle.
He was reminded of the ideals and morals Kade had talked about, and it immediately reignited the sense of caution he had held after arriving here at the start.
’I was too complacent.’ It was a lot to take in.
After fighting with Kade, he had started to lower his guard and trust him, but the sad truth was that Ren didn’t see the world in the same way the person before him saw it.
’I couldn’t care less about what he wants…’ although those were his thoughts, his heart still held a soft spot for the abandoned kids due to his own past.
Yet even this didn’t make him change his goals to do something like saving all the children and such.
Kade, finally not able to take the silence anymore, asked him.
“Do you want to say something?”
“Where will I live?” He had agreed to join the faction, and more than that, Ren couldn’t fight in his current state and not to forget he still needed another vial for Caleb, so he decided to stay.
“Ask Cooper. He is responsible for managing the housing facilities.” The faction leader cleared his throat after he finished speaking.
“Oh, okay.” Nodding, Ren met with Cooper right outside the building and he started to take him to his new abode.
’So this is where I am gonna live now?’ A wry laugh escaped his lips as he realized that he still didn’t have a place to call home in this foreign world.
’First, the village. Then the citadel which was followed by the residence in the outer keep and finally, the base of the third faction.
Let’s see how long I last here before my luck screws me up again.’
