Oblivion's Heir: Rise of the Sovereign - Chapter 51: Trust and Distrust

Chapter 51: Trust and Distrust
’It’s nice.’ Looking around his new house, which was one of the undamaged residences situated on the east side of the dome, Ren appeared quite satisfied.
A bed rested near the window of the modest room, with a drawer placed beside it.
Oil lamps were lit in each corner of the room, and two chairs stood beside a wooden table on the other side of the room, probably used for eating food.
The scene reminded him of his own old house, and slowly, a sense of loneliness enveloped him as he recalled the fact that he didn’t have a place to call home in his actual world, either.
’I will make a new start.’ Not wanting to get depressed, which was what his aunt Nyra worried about the most for him, Ren cheered himself up with a goal he wanted to accomplish.
Even though he knew it wouldn’t be easy to do that in another world, especially one devoured by the apocalypse.
Without wasting any further time, he jumped on the bed and lay down on it like a log.
Though he had woken up not long ago, his back still ached like hell whenever he tried to bend his body.
The same thing had happened when he stood up from the chair when he was with Kade, so he decided to rest for now and reorganize whatever cards he had left, if any.
“None…” Sighing, he realized that he didn’t have anything to hide, if not counting his unique system.
Kade should know about his ability to control the vermyrexs since he had seen the proof right with his own eyes, and for his Oblivion Integration? Almost everyone in the dome had seen his transformed state.
“Not like I wanted to hide myself anyway, but one or two cards could have been useful for emergencies.” One crucial thing Ren had concluded was that it wasn’t only the creatures of the apocalypse he needed to be wary of.
Humans were one of them too.
And he had experienced it firsthand from Derek, a man who somehow manipulated the Luna, the victim herself.
He wasn’t going to let him go, but for now, he needed to think about Caleb.
“I am just doing this because their group had saved me when I first arrived here… though it’s also true that I am getting attached to them, especially…” Raising his hand above as he lay on the bed, her figure appeared in his mind, and he clenched his fists.
He still had no idea what she meant by meeting him soon, and yet, he was going to wait.
’Though she is still suspicious for lying about her clothes.’ Ren was astounded by the detailing and how finely-crafted the suit was, yet what intrigued him more was one of its function that allowed it to self-clean.
“That would be far better than this uncomfortable clothing,” As he muttered, his eyes grew heavy.
And a couple of minutes later, he fell asleep.
***
KNOCK. KNOCK.
The sharp knocking echoed through the room, waking him instantly.
’Who?’ Ren furrowed his brows, and glancing around the completely dark room even though no curtains covered the window, he noticed that someone had come to meet him in the middle of the night.
Even though it was true that the dome didn’t allow sunlight to enter this place, the whole dome was still kept bright with all the oil lamps and paper lanterns, and it was also true that those items would be used up soon.
’Shit.’ The pain shot up his spine once again as he stood up, though it was somewhat bearable.
Opening the door with an unpleasant face, Ren found Carter standing in front of the door.
His drowsiness vanished after realizing it wasn’t someone who came to ask about food, clothing, or such as many people had come for exactly that reason when Carter had just left after showing him his new house.
“Can I come inside?” Carter asked in a neutral tone.
“Yeah. Did you need to tell me something?” That was the only thing he could think of.
’And it better be something important.’ Ren felt frustrated as to why he couldn’t come tomorrow morning.
Nodding his head, the man stepped inside and sat on one of the chairs nearby.
Ren didn’t sit. Not because he didn’t want to — but because he couldn’t, however, the words that escaped Carter’s lips made him sit on the bed without even realizing it.
“We suspect that the monster that destroyed almost everything yesterday had entered this place by following you.”
Ren wanted to deny it, but he himself knew that the time between his appearance and the abomination’s was too close.
His grip on the corner of the bed tightened as he realized he was once again going to be thrown out, but to his surprise, Carter spoke once again.
“Sir Kade didn’t agree with our doubts and said that if you were the perpetrator, you wouldn’t have fought and risked your life like that.”
Ren exhaled in relief, but Carter wasn’t finished.
“And as much as I agree with his words, the fact still remains that the timing was too perfect to be a coincidence, and not to forget the fact that you were thrown away by the creature while it was Sir Kade who suff—” He shut his mouth immediately.
The faction leader had warned everyone from letting Ren know about his injury, leaving everyone confused but they agreed nonetheless.
His eyes narrowed as Carter stopped all of a sudden.
’Is he hiding something?’ Nevertheless, he at least knew Kade trusted him enough so nothing bad was going to happen to him.
’And here I thought it couldn’t get worse.’ Now even he didn’t know how many people suspected him of being the reason for the attack, which would definitely create problems if he stayed here.
Ren could see those small conflicts happening daily, which might force Kade to take some action.
’That’s it, I will ask him for another potion. He should have more of them, and aiding him in the fight should have been more than enough to prove my worth despite the blame that is now pinned on me.’
He closed the door and not wanting to think about how to deal with the people here, he once again went back to sleep.
