- Six Hundred And Seventeen

“You know, I’m not sure that’s a great idea, there are a lot of problems…” I began, feeling the pressure. “And also…” I glanced at Melissa. “It’s not just Eleanor who is in a relationship. Surely you all want to spend Christmas day with Miss Masters?”
“Oh, that’s certainly true. Young Melissa is… a bit of a breath of fresh air, bringing that American… forthrightness… to bear.” the Queen declared with a fond, teasing smile. “I suppose young Henry does need someone a bit wiser to rein him in. Don’t think I’ve forgotten you nearly getting yourself killed scouting for Eleanor, as if you were still in the army, and had any clue what you were doing.” She gestured to her son, the Prince of Wales, who with a suppressed sigh, opened up the bottle and poured the Queen a glass of fine Fae brandy. She swirled it slowly, admiring the rich golden colour under the light, before taking a long swig, and then letting out a satisfying snort, amused we were all hanging on her words, different emotions evident on all our faces.
“I’m not a military woman, despite being Head of the Armed Forces, a role quite similar to old Katsuro’s in Japan… but even I know when scouting, you should have pulled back when encountering unexpected forces. Intelligence is no use if it dies with you. Fortunately Eleanor and Akio bailed you out of your own mess… it might be true, all the old jokes they say about inbreeding leading to a lack of nous and wisdom. Thus having young Melissa and young Akio marrying in, it might inject our bloodline with a bit more vim and vigour. Oh, this is fantastic stuff… does anyone else care for a sip?”
Everyone shook their heads, and the Queen chuckled. “All the more for me, then. I’m expecting a regular supply from you, my boy, once you’ve sorted the production bottlenecks. Maybe if you ask nicely, I’ll even do you an advertisement, for your new TV station. Quite a big deal that. And…” She glanced at Princess Diana, who suddenly gave me a warm smile, taking over.
“I was very touched, when you spoke up for my daughter. I hoped she would follow in my footsteps, but… you’re not fond of the spotlight, are you?” She inspected her daughter, frowning. “Nor did you know what you wanted to do with your life. You graduated with a degree more for show than to further your career. Since then, you have just been moping around. Yes… life has taken a strange turn, and thrust you into a role you were completely unsuited to…”
“Not entirely…” Ellie was defensive. “At least my Classics lectures came in handy in regard to some mythological beings and situations.”
“I suppose that’s a fair point.” Princess Diana conceded. “But do you disagree you were without a goal in life, up until this bitter grail passed to you, that you had to shoulder the longstanding fate of our family?”
“How can I? But…” Ellie glanced at me, her blue eyes rather exasperated, and her face slightly pink. “…please don’t make me out to be a hopeless bum, mother. Not in front of Akio. I still do want to look good. My pride as a woman won’t allow me to do any less…”
“That’s what I don’t get!” Melissa, who had clearly been stewing on some worry for a while, interrupted. “Eleanor, I’m going to be your sister-in-law, so I’ll be blunt. Don’t demean yourself like this! I can’t understand what it’s like to be a Chosen, I still don’t know much about it, only what’s on the news, and what Henry’s told me, but I know this… you’re worth more than being just a trophy bride for a womaniser, or a bargaining chip for political gain! Think of the Suffragettes! The National Women’s Party in America! All those freedoms they fought for, all the blood, sweat and tears women have shed for decades, just to get the chance to be seen as equal!”
“I say, Mel, steady on…” Henry was sweating. “That’s a bit harsh to the bloke. Akio saved my sister’s life, saved mine, maybe saved all of Britain…”
“I know!” she yelled, before taking a deep breath, calming herself. She turned to me, and the expression on her face and in her brown eyes wasn’t an angry one now, but simply determined. “I’m endlessly grateful. I’ve found love with Henry, and while he can be impulsive and naïve, he’s a good man. So thank you for saving him. I’ll never forget the gratitude I owe for that. Likewise… Eleanor, despite being rather cold and unapproachable, at least to me… I’m so happy you protected her. But… that’s one thing. The way you’re treating her as chattel is another. Doing one good deed doesn’t allow you to do an evil one to balance it out, does it?”
“Evil?” Ellie murmured, a slightly dangerous edge to her tone, but Melissa wasn’t done.
“Don’t you think you’re being selfish, placing such a great value on yourself, giving only a little, and taking everything from many women? You’re not living in the past, a King with concubines and palace harems! You might be strong, even a hero, but… you’re just a man! And that doesn’t give you the right to toy with women!”
“I agree.” My reply shocked her, and I repeated it, my tone wry. “I agree, I said. And you don’t think I’ve agonised over this? But what it comes down to is simple… I’ll be more than just a man, more than just a King, perhaps more even than an Astral Emperor, if that’s what I need to do to keep everyone smiling. Because…” I turned to Ellie. “…you deserve happiness and security. And I can give you that. It may be hypocritical, it may be arrogant, but… while I’m still learning what it is to love, especially to love many women… I’ll never stop learning and growing and trying my best. And I’ll make it work. Honestly, I’m a bit amazed myself…” I chuckled, shaking my head. “…I was sure you hated me, Ellie, and even when that changed, I thought it was just a bit of gratitude and lingering respect. I never thought you’d say you actually liked me, want… want to be my wife, even knowing that there are many others, and if I’m honest, more to come…”
“Yes, the Valkyries. And I am kept abreast of other suspicious women.” Eleanor agreed. “Forget all that. I’m seemingly an easy woman. And you don’t see me as Princess Eleanor, but… it’s amusing. You do see me as a Princess, though…”
“Yeah. Princess of Humans, and you are indeed more human than any of the others, except perhaps poor Yukiko. We’re out on our own date right now, and she’s listening sympathetically to me as I’m dying inside with the stress of this meeting.” My chuckle was a little strained now. “But at least the view is magnificent, the booze good, and the company better.”
“Lucky. I can hardly wait to get out of this awkward situation. I don’t do well with embarrassment, it’s why David delights in provoking me. Oh, he says that when your Pilgrimage is done, and you’re over for New Year, he’ll take you out to some proper London pubs. I hope your liver is made of iron.”
“Sure. I’ll drink him under the table. But… Miss Masters…”
“There’s no need for that level of formality. It seems what I’m saying isn’t going to stop you, so we will be related…”
“Melissa, then…” I agreed. “Women are our equal. It’s even more true now than it ever was. And I don’t see any of my fiancées as just trophies, or as notches on my belt. If Ellie thinks she’s easy, then I’m easiest. I want to make Ellie, make all of them happy. I know strong women. Shaeula, Eri, Motoko, Daiyu, Hyacinth… and yes, Ellie too. Even those who aren’t fighters are hardly weak. Hinata, who drew her sword, Natsumi who alongside Motoko killed a Chosen leading a murderous attack on a school for girls… even ordinary girls like Kana did what needed to be done. Sure, men have more muscle strength, a more combative nature… but they are all merely a few percentage points, lost within the gains we can all achieve now. A woman can be everything a man can, can do anything, so long as they’ve got the drive, the will. And I love to see it…”
“I was not exactly at my best, but I was wrong.” Ellie agreed. “I thought they were being fooled, exploited, that they were too young or too naïve, or just tricked… but they weren’t, Melissa. They are all wiser than I am. I see it now.” She looked at the ring, filled with Foehn. “See how he thinks of me? Of us all?”
“But… all right, I won’t complain about them being younger, though I don’t think it’s right. It’s the power imbalance! How can any relationship thrive when it’s not equal…” Melissa argued.
“I’m confused.” Ellie tilted her head and seemed genuinely thrown off. “What do you mean by that?”
“It’s obvious! A relationship has to be between equals, or it’s not proper!”
“I see. So… who should I marry? I’m a Princess, my family is very wealthy, and I’m even the Chosen of the Green Man, with…” She paused, blushing, before smiling at me shyly. “…I’m not going to claim my powers are incredible, not beside you, but… I am still inhuman now…”
“Don’t say inhuman, just… strong.” I countered. “But she’s right. If you’re arguing that… you want me to die alone?” Well, that’s not entirely true, as Tan matches me, exceeds me, but then… she’s a Goddess, wouldn’t she be taking advantage of me then instead? “I get your point, you don’t think I should pressure anyone, intentionally or unintentionally, and I agree. But… no relationship is ever truly balanced. Strength in one area might be weakness in another. All that matters is happiness. So long as everyone’s smiling, I win.”
“Don’t think I haven’t been checking up on him and… I suppose I should say my new sisters.” Ellie shook her head. “But Melissa, they all say the same. They want each other to smile, and they want to relieve Akio’s cares. Not just to save the world, but… because they want him to smile too. That’s as equal a relationship as I can see. But then, I’m not as clever as you, Melissa, I admit it. Surely my numbers are higher, as Akio would put it, but…”
“Yeah, Intellect doesn’t fix social issues or habits, it only increases processing power, mental reaction speed and the like. Even so, I like you just the way you are, Ellie.”
“Yes, still easy…” she muttered before steeling herself, red-faced, to confront Melissa. “I agree, he’s unfair in a way. If we were to suggest we wanted other men too, he’d be hurt…”
“Yeah. I asked myself that question way back at the start. Back then, I thought I could do it and suffer the pain, if it was what they needed, but… I guess I’ve grown more comfortable, more possessive. But not like you think, Melissa.” I assured her. “No, I’ll be the man they need, and if there’s anything they lack, it means I just need to do better.”
“I agree.” Eleanor insisted stoutly. “It’s natural to worry, but… it’s not fair to judge. You’ll get to meet many of them soon enough. Talk to them… yes, Akio’s good deeds don’t entitle him to immunity to the consequences of his actions, but… they do and should entitle him to a bit of understanding and gratitude, Melissa. He’s… even going to far as to help Britain with a hospital…”
“I found that delightful, and all my misgivings vanished.” Princess Diana interrupted our bickering. “It’s such a… fitting tribute. I’d be curious as to why you decided on that plan?”
“It’s not so deep, really.” I sighed. “With great power comes great responsibility. But… my first responsibility is to those I love and treasure.” I looked at Eleanor solemnly. “That’s you as well now, Ellie.”
“You’re doing this on purpose.” Her face was scarlet, her neck, ears and even her hands tinted red. “I’m not used to such… heartfelt compliments. But…” she insisted stoutly. “I’ll learn. Else I won’t die in battle, but from a heart attack!”
“Yeah, no dying. Though… even then, I’d bring you back.”
“It’s certainly a reassuring thought. Melissa, you’re right. But Akio’s also right. Our relationship, even if I was his only lover, wouldn’t ever be equal. Even now, we started in the same place, but… it feels like I’m looking up at the top of the Tower of London. Heights I can’t reach easily. But I want to see the same view he does, and I know they all feel the same way. If you’re cruel enough to say Akio should be single, because he’s simply too… too… oh, I can’t even find the words…”
“Shining?” Henry offered, and Ellie nodded gratefully.
“Exactly. You can use your brain sometimes, Henry.” Ellie was even slightly cold in her praise, which made me chuckle. My sis can be the same way, sometimes…
“It’s like reaching for the sun. Sure, it may burn, but… it’s what we want. Isn’t that what matters, Melissa? If you respect our choices, and feel we’re equal, then… how do you reconcile it by denying our autonomy and wants? I did the same thing though, so I’m not calling you out, just… trying to offer some advice…” Her voice dipped at the end, her shame plain to see.
“Oh, we got distracted. Why the hospital…” I got us back on track. “…Ether Healing and Chirurgery are miracles. They can save lives. And seeing good people, such as Shinohara-san, or the cute little girl Ami-chan, free from pain and despair… I know I should do more. But… I could travel Japan, even with my strength, Healing the sick and the injured, and at the end of my journey, there’d still be as many as when I started. And I’d have denied myself, my lovers, my family, my friends, their own happiness, by not being there for them. But does that mean I should be selfish? No.” I shook my head emphatically. “Instead, if we train the right people, sure, in that time I could perhaps have saved a thousand lives, brought joy to many… but those I train can go on to save thousands more. And I don’t compromise my own, or Ellie’s, or anyone else’s happiness in doing so. In fact, it might be possible to eventually have enough trained Ether Healers and Chirurgeons to eradicate disease and injury, so that only sudden deaths are untreatable. Even traumas and other mental sorrows might be soothed if Light Of Muted Emotions or something similar can be learned.”
“I understand the end goal, that’s obvious. And laudable, don’t mistake me. I’ve seen a lot of suffering and tried to do my part to make the world a better place…” Princess Diana agreed. “…and it can work. I fully support your goals. But… why Britain, and why… did you give the credit to Eleanor?”
“Why wouldn’t I?” I shrugged. “I’m famous enough as it is, and… we’re allies, Japan and Britain. We agreed to stick together, and so we will. Besides, I wanted to give Ellie a gift, and I know all about you, Princess…”
“You can call me Diana, or even mother, if you wish.” The still beautiful Princess of Wales smiled softly, knowingly. “I’ve not heard Eleanor argue so eloquently and passionately over much before, and it seems she is dead set on your relationship. As a mother, I understand Melissa’s conflicted feelings… my own marital relationship was hardly an equal one to start, a largely arranged, hasty union…” she gazed at her husband, who nodded, a little ashamed, and I could tell Diana was ‘the one wearing the trousers in that relationship’, as mom might have said. “…but despite many trials and tribulations, we endured. And we are now even quite cordial. We probably have you to thank for that, Eleanor, for being born. We bonded over finally having a daughter.” She smiled then, wistful and proud. “Sons are nice, and in this family, essential, but… daughters are best.”
“Oh my, way to make me feel unwanted, mother.” Henry chuckled, lightening the heavy mood.
“You’re the spare, Henry. It’s always going to be rough.” Diana insisted. “But… you’ve always looked after Eleanor.”
“Of course. Akio gets it. Got to keep an eye on our little sisters, haven’t we?” he winked playfully. “Though I guess that’s your job now, Akio. Do it well, okay? Otherwise you’ll have the whole British Army and our Veterans gunning for you. Ellie’s extremely popular there, you know! She’s the number one pin-up girl on posters… well, the number one clothed, that is…”
“Henry, you absolute twat…” Eleanor swore in a very British style, in a manner I hadn’t heard before. “…of course I’ve never taken any risqué pictures, even on holiday I wear one-piece bikinis so I’m not peep-shotted by the tabloids! And…” She glanced at me, before turning her fury back on Henry. “…do you want me to bring up your many indiscretions in front of Melissa? I’d bloody well miss my date if I started, you’ve got so many! That damn fancy dress party for one…”
“Don’t worry. I get Henry’s humour. And… honestly, you’re extremely pretty, Eleanor.” I calmed her down. “Oh, and don’t concern yourself about the press, when we’re next at the beach, put on a bikini. If any newspaper is foolish enough to post such pictures of you or any of the others, they’ll regret it. Briefly.”
As she swooned over my possessive words, muttering “Easy, so easy…” to herself like a broken record, I addressed Henry and his mother.
“Anyway, the Princess Eleanor Free Hospital is only half of it… and I know technically a lot of hospitals are free in the UK, your National Health Service pays, but this will be a different sort of hospital… but, it might draw danger to the staff. Chirurgery and Ether Healing are priceless…”
“Oh yes.” The Queen spoke up, she’d been enjoying the show with her glass of brandy and a smile for a while. “Shige did mention you made a lot of money with it.”
“Yeah, but… soon we’ll be making more money than even I’ll need… and so instead it’s better to spread the teachings. Some might say I’m foolish, that I’m giving up strength or trump cards, and maybe they’re right, but… I want to make the world a better place, and I want to share happiness, make people smile…” And it’ll be my world, our world, I’m making better, after all… I’ll be an Emperor, but I want to be a benevolent one… so long as people don’t try and disrupt that, cause harm, of course.
“To that end…” I continued. “I was thinking, what about training up the Veterans who adore Ellie, and having then as both guards and also Chirurgeons. That way, the staff are protected, and it could even be a fighting force for Britain in emergencies like the Church attacks. Even PTSD and other conditions could be mitigated for them, though I can sense Haru getting a bad feeling right now…” It’d be more work for her, but she’ll have more free time next year… at least I hope so. “…we also have access to… Eyes, I suppose, in limited quantities, for a small number of the best of them and the doctors. I envisage a communal pool of skilled surgeons and doctors, who can use aether efficiently, since their knowledge exceeds mine, I just brute force stuff most of the time, and with Chirurgery, a side benefit is it becomes easier to share aether, so… everyone can also act as a battery. And the hospital wouldn’t need to be that large, or have too much expensive machinery, as patients wouldn’t be in wards long-term…”
“I see. It could certainly work!” Henry slammed one fist on his open palm triumphantly. “The lads and lasses would definitely be up for it, and I’d be glad to see them getting back on their feet. In some cases, literally, with fresh legs! It’d ruin my Veteran Olympics though…” he chuckled. “But I wouldn’t be sad to see it go, if everyone was back to fighting trim. See, Mel? He’s not a bad guy, and you know it. He’s just… a bit lusty, yeah? But they’re all consenting adults. Who are we to judge? I’d rather entrust Ellie to him, who’s upfront about it, rather than someone who won’t treat her right.”
“Fine.” Melissa turned to me. “I… apologise. But… if you prove to be like I fear you are, I won’t stay silent!”
“I’ll take that deal…” I chuckled, holding out my hand, and she glanced at it, before clasping it, giving me a soft shake.
“That’s better. Family drama at Christmas is so wearying.” Eleanor mopped her sweaty brow, before the Queen threw in another verbal bomb, a wicked smirk on her face.
“Oh, but we still haven’t decided who’ll be your chaperone, my dear granddaughter. Oh…” She winked at me. “…don’t misunderstand, Akio my boy, you’re both adults, so if you want to take things further, it’s fine.”
“Grandmother!” Eleanor ripened like a tomato, gasping out in shock and mortified shame.
“What’s wrong? I’m just being upfront, since we seem to have reached a consensus.” She nodded at Melissa. “So, Akio, you can allow one of us to be present, can’t you?”
Not like I can lie to the Queen of the United Kingdom, and also Eleanor’s beloved grandmother… “It’s technically challenging, but yeah. Thanks to the Ring Gates, someone who’s had Chirurgery can come to Tokyo, and then their Astral subtle body can be brought back to the Material… fortunately with Chirurgery, the Silver Cord’s able to sustain such a length. I wouldn’t have wanted to try it with my original White Cord…” Really, it seems a Silver Cord can largely manage as far as we want to go, though… I bet crossing between Earth and the Pantheons would be dangerous to anyone with a low-Rank Cord… fortunately, mine’s fairly strong…
“I can’t say I understood all that…” she replied cheerfully, taking another sip of brandy. “…but that means I could go, yes?”
No. No way! If something goes wrong, the diplomatic disaster would be apocalyptic! Fortunately, it seemed like everyone else agreed. “That’s not sensible, mother.” Prince Charles insisted. “Too much excitement is bad for you, and the Prime Minister would be howling in protest loud enough to wake the dead. No… one of us should go.” He glanced at his wife, and Diana nodded.
“You can grant me Chirurgery, can’t you? And then I’ll accompany my daughter and help her feel at ease.”
“I can manage by myself…” Eleanor grumbled. “But… I suppose I don’t mind.”
I sort of do, but… “I can, but… you know, my mom’s always been a big fan of yours, so… I’ll try and stop her overwhelming you. And we have some… interesting characters living with us… who might offend you.”
“I’m not so fragile as that.” Diana shook her head. “So, it’s settled then.”
“I…” Looks like there’s no getting out of it. I get the feeling Christmas Day is going to be stressful as hell… “Sure. I feel a little bad dragging you away from your family. Sorry Melissa. I’m sure you wanted dinner with your mother-in-law too.”
Melissa seemed surprised at my apology, and she shook her head. “It’s only fair. I’ll have most of the family here.”
“How about we make it a yearly tradition?” the Queen teased cheekily. “Oh, son…” she addressed Prince Charles carelessly. “…go fetch them, will you? I want my favour, a Christmas gift for me! I’m never too old for a present from a handsome young man. Oh, don’t pout so, my dear granddaughter.” She winked at Ellie. “I’m sure Akio is not so starved of female attention he’d be swayed by an old battleaxe like me, when he has you by his side now. Just having my fun.” As Charles slipped out, she smirked knowingly. “I do think next year should be unprecedented, though. A real family get-together. Why not make it here in Britain? Your mansion won’t hold everyone, will it?”
That’s true, but… “I think it’s not up to me to decide that.” I demurred. “And I can tell Eleanor’s eager to start our date.”
“That’s right, I am!” She crossed her arms, annoyed. “I steeled myself for today, and now I’ll be damned if I don’t have an amazing time.”
“So eager. Hang on a minute, first…” the Queen insisted, as her son came back, holding…
Those are… the Crown Jewels?
“Yes, that’s right.” The Queen interpreted my expression properly. “I had them fetched from the Tower ready. After all, if your Japanese Imperial Regalia were such charming young women, then our treasures might be the same.” She tapped them one by one. “St Edwards Crown.Sovereign’s Orb. Sovereign’s Ring. The Sovereign’s Sceptre, the Rod of Equity and Mercy.” The four treasures were on a velvet cushion, and even I recognised them.
“Of course, the Crown Jewels contain other treasures, but these ones… these are the most important in a sense. So… go on, take a look!”
Even Eleanor, who was frustrated at the delay to our date, seemed interested now, so, knowing it was useless to argue, I let my Eyes shine, sharpening my vision, examining the treasures whose value, just like the Japanese Imperial Regalia, was incalculable. Though honestly, in comparison, these look far more regal, and the value of gold and jewels alone makes my head spin…
“All right then. Huh…” The first thing I noticed was that there were no Tsukumogami, of course. That made sense, as the British didn’t believe in such myths. What there was, though, was a frankly absurd amount of adherence, rivalling the Tower of London in a way. No, not rivalling, some of the Tower’s adherence was being drawn to the treasures, but it wasn’t the majority. It seemed that it was coming in from all around us, a vast, nebulous web stretching out faintly as far as my Eyes could see, miles distant, until it became too faint to pick out. I’m sure it’s still there though.
“There’s an immense amount of adherence, with flavours of Ruling, Kingship, Protection and… there’s an odd one, coming from the Grail… hmm…” I fell silent, concentrating, everyone waiting on my every breath, though Melissa seemed more confused than anyone else. Only Eleanor and the Queen fully understood what I meant, eyes widening when I mentioned the Grail.
“I see. The Fisher King myth…” I mused. “The health of the land is believed to be tied to the state of the monarch.”
“It’s fortunate you fixed my ailing health then.” the Queen chuckled. “Such a diligent grandson-in-law. I have no complaints, Eleanor.”
“I should hope not, grandmother.” She was exasperated. “There’s the obvious issue, but aside from that, I can’t see how I could find a better one.”
“Does the Crown and the other Principal Coronation Regalia have spirits then?” the Queen asked again, and I shook my head.
“No. But it’s certainly not normal. It’s a focal point for a huge belief and faith in the monarchy, and the country as a whole.”
“I see. So… does that help us?” the Queen tilted her head, sipping brandy.
“Help you with what?” I asked, confused, and she tutted sharply.
“Keep up, Akio. You shouldn’t let us older folk run rings around you. Help us with this new world order! To protect Britain. And Japan, I suppose, considering our unshakeable alliance, sealed in matrimonial ties.” She couldn’t resist a teasing jab at Ellie. “You have your sword, which made a great impression, with the storm over Tokyo. The other two are surely just as special. So, what can these treasures do?”
“Currently? Nothing much.” The room froze at my words, and I held in a sigh. “Don’t be so quick to dismiss them. There’s a wealth of adherence here, and while it is drawing from the Grail, it’s not the principal source. Adherence has many uses, and while we could certainly use it up, and it would gradually be replenished by your citizens, and also perhaps those around the world who have good feelings towards the monarchy… some of the Commonwealth, perhaps?”
“Some, maybe. We are not so well loved everywhere.” The Queen lapsed back into Royal speech patterns at that.
“Regardless…” An idea was whirling in my head, and it was a dangerous one. Dangerously enticing. “I think at some point, they could be crafted into something powerful. Sort of like a set, each magnifying the effects of the others…” Split Thoughts, other than what I needed for my date with Yukiko, churned rapidly, running calculations, going through ideas and discarding the fanciful, impractical and plain impossible options, before coming to a conclusion. “…playing to the strength of the adherence could be… some sort of countrywide buffing effect? I doubt it would be that strong, due to the scale, but…” I shook my head, imagining it. “…of course, while my Skills aren’t terrible, messing with such treasures makes my hands shake.”
“Fascinating. Do tell me more, Akio.” The Queen leaned forward, brandy forgotten. “And don’t sell yourself short. My dear granddaughter vouches that you are far from a useless man. And the Imperial Family allowed to you repair their own treasured Regalia, which you did successfully.”
“Yeah, but… it’s a bit different working on something already broken.” I countered. “Worst case, I could have tried again later. But if I cause any damage to these…” I was sweating at the thought of it. “How would you explain it next time they’re needed? And I don’t want to waste this bountiful adherence.” A treacherous inner voice was telling me I could make a go of it, despite the risks, and I pushed it down. Though… just like the Tsukumogami, I can always make improvements later…
“If they are needed, it’ll be my son’s problem, not mine, as I’ll have passed on. Oh, don’t look so downcast, Eleanor. I’m fit as a fiddle right now, and I’m certainly not going anywhere until I see you and Henry married, and with at least one child each!”
As Henry guffawed, holding Malissa’s hand affectionately, Ellie simply looked down, pink cheeked.
“Are… are you sure?” I asked, and the Queen nodded sharply, suddenly a regal, imperious monarch again.
“Of course we are.” She was back in Queen mode. “We treasure the historical legacy of our family, our country, above all. But… they are not what lies beneath the Tower. They are secondary. We would grasp at any straw to protect our beloved citizens. Isn’t that right, Eleanor?”
Ellie nodded firmly. “Yes. I’ve come too far to back down now. But…” She suddenly stamped her foot childishly, surprising everyone. “Grandmother, you’re wasting my precious date. I’ve seen Akio craft, and he’s swift, but with such treasures, he’ll have to take extra care…” She balled her fists, furiously pouting. “…it’s not fair! Why should I be shortchanged? I’ve finally decided to start dating, and…”
She stopped, realising we were all staring at her in shock. Forcing down her shame, she faced us boldly. “What? Is there anything to be ashamed of? Melissa, you surely understand, don’t you? You’d be frustrated if your time with Henry was cut short for stupid reasons.”
“Stupid? You think so?” the Queen seemed delighted by her anger. “I’m amused by your cheek, granddaughter.”
“They’re all like this. As fiery as Ellie.” Henry whispered to Melissa, though loud enough for us all to hear. “I think you’ll like them. At least get all the facts before you judge, all right? Better to be silent and thought a fool, eh?” He winked cheerfully, and Ellie shook her fist.
“Stop trying to sound wise, Henry, you barely know what that means!” she cried. “You’re right, but I hate it that you are!”
“It has been wonderful, seeing a new side of my granddaughter.” The Queen was back to her ordinary, intimate talk. “But as a man, can’t you do something? She’s been fretting about today, and you have clearly struck her keenly with your charming gifts…” Her grin was now smug. “…so you can do it when you try…”
“Fine.” I acknowledged. “I suppose I don’t need to sleep tonight.” Though to be fair I’ll need to get everyone’s consent… otherwise it isn’t equitable…
Back in the Boundary, Yukiko was snickering, clearly amused by my discomfort as I related the tale. “Oh, that doesn’t sound like Eleanor at all. Stamping her foot and pouting like a child. But then…” Her brown eyes were mirthful and also somehow gentle. “…I suppose I get it. As a Princess, A Chosen, and a woman. By my reckoning, you can scrape out an extra three hours if you need to. Don’t worry, I’ll be sure to cover for you.”
“Thanks.” I took her hand. “You’re great, you know that?”
“Flattering me, are you? I don’t hate that. Because when you say it, I do feel rather proud.” She leaned back, no longer focussing on the magnificent view of the Territory, but on my eyes. “So while you’re busy with Eleanor, let’s keep getting to know each other better.” She paused, glancing at me, her lips quirking into a smile, before she stamped her foot playfully, imitating how I’d described Ellie. “Oh, and… I’d like a nickname as well. It’s only fair.”
I see. Yeah, she’s a bit jealous, which is understandable, but… Grabbing her hand, I gave it a reassuring squeeze. “Sure thing… Kiko.”
“Oh, that makes me shiver. In a good way.” Her smile was delighted. “And good job on not shortening it like Shiro does. Oh, but I insist that you come up with one for Tsukiko as well. I have to look out for her. Though she can’t be Kiko too, it’ll be confusing.”
“I’ll do my best.” I had a feeling I’d be coming up with nicknames for a lot of women over Christmas. Fortunately, I don’t think Shaeula, Hyacinth or Asha will care…
“Great. In that case… what should I call you? Aki’s taken, Kio sounds weird… Kiki’s good, but…”
“Please, not Kiki…” I chuckled ruefully. “It sounds way too feminine.”
“Yes, and you’re so very manly.” Kiko chuckled and traced a finger along my arm playfully, though she was blushing doing it, overcoming her shyness. “This really is nice. I could get used to this.”
“You’ll be able to. Once the Pilgrimage is over, we’ll have more time for leisure.”
“If you say so. I remain unconvinced. After all…” I’d called for several of the maids at the treetop café a few minutes ago, and sent them off with strange orders, and now they had returned, out of breath, fur dripping with silvery sweat, their arms laden with tools, mental ingots, jewels and Etherites. I’ve still got my precious indigo one safely in storage…
“…a fun date in London seems to have morphed into another bout of painstaking, high-pressure work for you. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear you’re a masochist.”
“No, definitely not!” I shuddered, imagining having any of the same inclinations as Christina Bakker. I began to store the tools and treasures in my Spatial Storage Bracelet, drawing Kiko’s curiosity.
“So you can just take those items out in London? Amazing. We could revolutionise the transport industry like that…”
“It’s not exactly that simple. It’s hard on spatial element, and while aether is a good substitute, eventually it’ll need recharging. Besides….” My grey eyes glazed over a bit as I remembered Arisu-san’s explanation, and despite my Intellect I didn’t fully get it, though the mathematics I could grasp, if I accepted her explanation as accurate. “…think of it like this. The Material is a largely flat sheet of spacetime, don’t worry about the third dimension or time, that makes the maths horrific. Though I think Arisu-san really enjoys working on it when she has downtime. I can see her winning a Nobel Prize one day, you know? Anyway… yeah, just consider the Material flat, but with some curvature where spatial distortions happen. Then above it lies a shifting, three-dimensional sea, which is the Astral, though the Boundary, again, is closer to a flat sheet within that, mapping largely one-to-one to the Material, though when space curves here, it expands. Hence dungeons.”
Yeah, I kind of grasp it, up to this point. It’s when Arisu-san tries to tie the three-dimensional, which in actuality would be more than three, just as the Material isn’t two-dimensional, into one, I get confused. Apparently it’s like the Holographic Universe Principle, at least in terms of basic maths, though somehow even more challenging to understand…
“I see. But how does your bracelet work?” Kiko asked, and I couldn’t help but grin.
“Oddly enough, that’s easy to understand in comparison. The space within isn’t a part of either layer, it’s disconnected. Thus it’s possible to have that discrete space connected in both the Material and the Boundary, or indeed, we could create a device that can access closed spaces from anywhere. Arisu-san’s Room is the advanced version, one she has total control over. In fact, she’s not really limited by distance in terms of how far she can traverse, as… well, imagine we compress all of our world down to a flat sheet of paper. Arisu-san can simply step to where she wants to go in the third dimension. It doesn’t matter about distance, as she’s outside.” The issue now was she needed the ability to safely pinpoint her exit. Her tokens were too weak, so she’d created better versions, which could generate spatial ripples that her keen senses could pinpoint, over far greater distances. The downside was they were fiendishly aether-intensive though…
“You’re right. That is difficult to understand. I think I’m glad I received such a straightforward Favour as Amaterasu’s Sun.” Kiko chuckled softly, taking a sip of her wine. “I’ll have a think about your new nickname. Maybe I’ll consult with Tsukiko. While I don’t want us both to be Kiko, I’d be more than happy if we were equally as intimate with you.”
“I’ll look forward to it.” I managed a faint smile, even if I found such pet names embarrassing. Shiro’s different. After all, we never knew her actual name, and Shirohime was just… yeah, way too cringey. Though I did enjoy the way she reacted sometimes when I called her that unexpectedly…
“So…” Kiko changed the subject as I stowed the final treasures. “Will you be demanding one of the Crown Jewels as payment then?”
What? I nearly spat out my own drink in shock at that, and as I blinked owlishly, she let out a bright peal of laughter.
“Isn’t it obvious? After all, you made demands of me.” Her face was pink now, but her eyes were bright and gazing at me fondly. “I nearly had a heart-attack when you asked for one of the Regalia, you know. The implication was clear, you were asking to join the Imperial Family! That meant marrying me… oh, well I suppose cousin Kaoruko was an option too, but I knew you didn’t mean her. It rather annoyed me you seemed clueless after that.”
“Yeah, my bad. As I joked with Eleanor, Intellect doesn’t make me better with women.”
“Despite that… I considered it, you know? It brought it to the forefront of my mind.” Without her glasses on, I could see into her soulful brown eyes clearly. Though I will admit, I do like a girl in glasses. Stats have fixed everyone’s vision, but wearing some for style now and again should be fine, I’m sure…
“Yes, there had been discussions behind the scenes about a possible union. Politically, it makes total sense. But I didn’t think about it. Until then. And when I thought about it… I realised the idea didn’t seem so bad. No, that’s not fair… I wanted to. My only worry was that Tsukiko had already fallen in love with you. I didn’t want to hurt her, but…”
“But she wanted you to be happy as well” I finished for her, and Kiko nodded cheerfully.
“I’m very lucky to have such a friend. And you are lucky to have us. Although it seems I’m not as highly valued as Eleanor… since you’re not claiming a treasure from Britain. Or is Eleanor their Crown Jewel you’ve stolen?”
“I know you’re teasing me, but…” I reached out, pulling Kiko into a hug. “You’re as valuable to me as Tsurugi and the others. And more of a prize. I promise.” I kept my voice low and breathy, into her ear, enjoying her skin reddening. “So, let’s make the most of this date, all right? In fact… it should be time soon. I’ve got a special surprise planned. A rather romantic one…”
“Oh? Then I hope it soothes my wounded heart…” she giggled mockingly. “But I’m impressed. Obviously we girls have been chatting in our groups about the dates, and you’ve managed to keep each one fairly unique…”
No kidding, it’s been a trial. But a welcome one… As I flirted and got some much-needed skinship with Yukiko, no, Kiko, back in London, I was pulling out tools and treasures, arraying them before me. A table had been hauled over, cleared for my use, and the prized treasures of the Queen were placed before me.
“That’s… I don’t know how to describe it.” Melissa marvelled, and Henry puffed out his chest pridefully.
“It shows just how much the family trusts you, Mel, that you’re allowed to see this. This could be a big part of our family’s story.”
“Are you sure about this?” Ellie seemed concerned, and I gave her a wan smile, as I let my Eyes shine with brilliant amber flecks, narrowing my focus and intensity.
“Sure? Not really. Just so long as I don’t end up being beheaded on the steps of the Tower if I mess up.”
“Oh, we don’t do that anymore.” the Queen snorted. “Though if you break my crown, then maybe we shall let the ravens of the Tower at you…”
“Grandmother! I won’t let you! You’re the one who asked…” Ellie trailed off after stomping her foot in frustration, realising it was a joke she had fallen for.
“It seems like our dear daughter is smitten.” Prince Charles opined, and Diana nodded, a warm smile gracing her face.
“It had to happen sooner or later. Honestly, it might be better this way.”
“I think so too. Ellie’s a fighter, nobody knows that better than me, but she’s still a girl.” Henry added, but Melissa shook her head.
“Weren’t you listening? Women can be the equal of, no, surpass men, now! Eleanor doesn’t need protection. She can be her own shield!”
“I certainly can.” Ellie agreed, idly tracing her watch with her fingers as she observed me pick up St Edward’s Crown. “I’m nothing if not tough, Melissa. And I agree, I’ll be the first to step up when trouble faces Britain. Pain is the first thing to fade, you know…” she explained gently. “…though it still hurts, it’s not the fierce agony where I wished I was dead the first time a bloody Goblin stabbed me through my armour. Oh, losing an arm was worse… oh, but actually, having an eye burst was probably the most disgusting…”
At her litany of woes, the Queen, Diana, Prince Charles and Henry all looked terribly sad, and Melissa went pale, quite a feat with her darker, rich skin tone. Still, Ellie wasn’t asking for pity, her need for sympathy had been lost during the terrible events of Mary Stuart’s attack.
“…but they all grow back, good as new. You know that too, Henry. It’s true now that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.” Ellie continued, pensive, still toying with her new watch. “So yes, I don’t need Akio as a shield, in fact, in my team, I and… one other…” she fell silent for a moment, blue eyes distant. “…were the shields for the others. And it’s a role I have no objection to playing. But wouldn’t it be rather nice for someone else to take the front once in a while?”
“And I’m happy to do it.” I’d inspected the Orb, Ring and Sceptre too, laying them aside, and it was a curious feeling. My Path… it was reacting, and I felt I understood why. “I’d rather get hurt myself than watch others suffer. And it’s not misplaced manly pride. Though as a man, of course any wounds I get protecting Ellie and the others are proud ones. It’s just… I’m like Ellie. I’ve gained this strength so that I don’t have to lose again, so that others don’t have to sacrifice… if it was David who needed my strength, or any of the male trainees back In Japan, I’d take blows for them too. Don’t judge everything in a narrow lens of how you think things are. Times have changed. Hell, I’m sure that powerful female Chosen are gathering their own harems, be they full of men, women, or both. All that matters is love, right?” I took a deep breath, my point made, Eyes staring, trying to grasp the flows of adherence, my Path humming. “Are you sure, Queen Elizabeth?” I asked one final time. “I can’t guarantee that I won’t cause damage on the back end where you can’t see. Or even change the Material treasures slightly. I’m not a fool, I’m planning to create a foundation now, which I can build on when I’ve cracked the next bottleneck.” I’m limited in the adherence I can control for crafting, and these are going to rely on it for the vast majority of their strength and functions, but… no, I can do it.
“We are indeed resolved. Just as our Eleanor risks harm, can we do no less? They are simple treasures. Do you know, the original Crown was sold off after Parliament abolished the monarchy in sixteen forty-nine? Of course, that was short-lived, as even Charles the First carried out his duty and passed on the legacy of the Tower to that rogue Oliver Cromwell. Guilt gnawed at him, he didn’t know, so he said, afterwards. In the end, Cromwell helped reclaim what was left, and much of the Crown and other Regalia use parts of the original medieval relics, and he left records of the Tower and what lies beneath for the future rulers, whoever they would be. None outside this room know that, other than Richard.”
“I can see the original parts.” I agreed. “The adherence density imbued into the metal and jewels over the years is different.”
Responsibility weighs heavy on me, but… I was distracted, all my attention that wasn’t in the Boundary focussed on the four items, and then I felt a hand on my shoulder. I glanced around, to see Ellie close by, smiling at me. “It’ll be fine. I’m prepared to face the consequences with you. Besides, I believe in you. I’d be a fool not to.”
“Thanks.” I overlapped our hands, feeling the cool hardness of the ring I had given her. “In that case… my Path… is Connection, Bonds, Growth, Knowledge, Fortune… honestly, these treasures share a little with that. Crown, signifying the right to rule… Orb, signifying Godly power… Sceptre, governance and mortal authority, and the ring… personal responsibility…”
Everyone listened to my voice as I explained. “So, they need to be a set. Why can’t items be Connected, Bonded? After all, they’re already Connected to the Queen, this Country, and all the people within it, both past, present and future. So… we maximise that, put the adherence to use, instead of merely accumulating it. No, instead, let’s purify and strengthen it!”
There’s a lot of jewels in the Crown… three hundred and forty-five rose-cut aquamarines, thirty-seven white topazes, twenty-seven tourmalines, twelve rubies, seven amethysts, six sapphires, two jargoons, one garnet, one spinel, one carbuncle and one peridot. Not just the crown, the Orb… nine emeralds, eighteen rubies, nine sapphires, three hundred and sixty-five diamonds, three hundred and seventy-five pearls, one amethyst and one glass stone. The Ring contains five rubies, a sapphire and sixteen diamonds, while the Sceptre has a diamond of immense scale, the Cullinan I, Great Star of Africa… and it’s studded with many more diamonds, three hundred and thirty-three to be exact, thirty-one more rubies, fifteen emeralds, seven sapphires, six spinels, and one composite amethyst. That’s… a ludicrous amount of gemstones. But…
My Split Thoughts, with my high Intellect and Alacrity, ran the calculations in moments, and the size and shape of each gem was individually remembered. “All right… time to sort by colour…” Red, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, and even Indigo… I had those Etherites, but obviously I didn’t have a Violet one, nor did Etherites run clear… but… Hmm, no, that’s thinking about it wrong, it’s more about the elemental affinity rather than the Etherite colour, but…
Despite the ever-growing hunger Ixitt’s Mortal Engineers had for Etherites, we were still managing to accumulate them, largely thanks to the crystallisation effect of the proliferating Artificial Ether Spires. That kept red, orange and to a lesser extent, yellows, flowing into our coffers, which were then spent to make more Spires, a feedback loop that thanks to the ever-increasing ether density of Kyoto, and now my Territory, that showed no signs of slowing down. Green and blue were largely pulled in by trade, but we still had enough to spare.
“Right then… just what’s a Kingdom? The Fisher King has to be the core of the adherence… it might give the Queen proper access to using the Grail too, if done properly…” Everyone was hanging on my words as I talked to myself rapidly, assessing what I needed. “This green and pleasant land… yes, we’ll need earth element, and water too… and wind. But not fire… I think I can add wood element… light and darkness… but my stocks are a bit low…”
“All right then. let’s do this…”
“Please do. I don’t want to hurry you, but…” Ellie seemed eager, so I patted her shoulder tenderly, giving her a thumbs-up.
“Let me just seem a competent son-in-law, and then we’ll go out and play. Right, the reds and the oranges… to dust…” I shattered those Etherites to powder and was going to use that as a base for my crafting. “And… go.” Water element mixed with the dust, forming a powerful industrial style cutting edge. Yellow and green Etherites were cut into small gemstones, as were a small number of blues. I carefully began polishing, turning thumb-size stones into mirror images of the thousands of gems. The Cullinane I, however… I’ll need the indigo for that. I should have enough left over for the other three artefacts… it’ll be the link.
“That’s… sure something.” Henry whistled as scores of gems were created every second. “I don’t see the point though, unless Akio’s going to strip out the jewels… is your boyfriend that hard up, Ellie?”
“He’ll be richer than you soon, Henry.” she shot back, considering it herself. “I’m… no expert, but I do know the treasures of the Tower… they exist in both worlds.”
“Exactly.” I nodded approvingly, sparing her a warm smile even as I worked, surrounded by a swirling halo of mock-jewels. “I’m only going to change the Material Regalia a little, but…” With a smile, I vanished them for a moment. Before anyone could gasp, they reappeared on the table. “…oh, and don’t worry, I’m no thief who just replaced them with fakes.” I winked. “So…” Metal began to deform too, bluesteel, Dwarven Iron and Silver, gold from our Kobold mines, actual gemstones, and also Territorial Crystal and Silver. I quickly began to replicate the four treasures one after the other.
“I’m honestly not sure if the replicas would be more valuable.” Ellie blinked. “Uh, so… that’s real gold, isn’t it? I suppose you own a number of gold mines, don’t you?”
“I never really thought of selling it here. I suppose if we ever get really low on funds, but… it’s small change compared to what we’ll be earning in the future.” I answered, even as I began to feel a little regretful. I carefully carved out a chunk of the indigo Etherite to mimic the massive diamond, and inserted it into the replica Rod of Equity and Mercy. On the Ring replica, the large sapphire was replaced by another chunk, the Orb’s replacement was the glass stone, while the crown itself the largest central sapphire was also replaced by the indigo Etherite. Looking sadly at what I had left, I closed my fist, shattering the remains into dust.
“I feel bad. That Etherite was one-of-a-kind. Oh well… I’ll claim my reward from Ellie.” As she blushed, Melissa gave me a hard glower, but I merely raised an eyebrow, and she shook her head, sighing and folding her arms.
“Anyway… this is the bit that might make you all feel rather… unhappy.” I grimaced. “Damn, my supplies of elemental energy aren’t great, I’ve been constantly busy and not leaving myself time to accumulate reserves. Spatial is especially low, and I need some now. Oh well… I know I can convert other elements at a shitty rate. And Asha’s Tree has been filling our Elemental Silos. We don’t have the capacity we should, something else to address when we hit Rank Four. If only there was a better… way…?”
A sudden flash of inspiration struck me. “Nobody panic…” I waved a hand, and suddenly the inky darkness of Prominence Dusk formed behind me, the ring of darkness fringed with brilliant light rotating slowly.
Gasps echoed around me, but Ellie had seen it before so wasn’t impressed, just curious, and she turned to her mother with a slightly mocking smile on her face. “You know, it’s patently unfair all I do is take a beating like a punchbag, while Akio gets all the flashy tricks.”
“Hey, you’ve learned water, earth and light…” I chuckled, amused at her envy, and… oh wow, she’s proud of me? Damn, she really does like me, doesn’t she? It’s a mad world…
“It’s hardly the same, but I do suppose that yes, I have grown.” Ellie conceded. So, what are you doing?”
“It’s… simple in theory. Though rather a pain…” The opposite ring of Prominence Dawn flared into life, a penumbra of brilliance edged with inky darkness. “Positive void and negative void… if I can manage a little, and fuel them with light and darkness…” The two wings began to spin, though the problem was I couldn’t feed darkness to Prominence Dusk easily, though… “Of course! Bluesteel batteries!”
In the Boundary, I quickly called for more supplies, Kiko smiling at my sudden panic. As I was brought them, brave maids running up and down the stairs around the Tree, quite the feat of endurance, I placed them in my storage and brought them over.
“If I can’t use my own energies but instead take externally…” I transferred darkness element into the batteries and passed them to Ellie. “Hold these and pour in your aether. You don’t need to do anything with the darkness element, just let it surge out, and I’ll draw it in.”
“Got it.” Her cheerful expression had erased her earlier frustration now, and she bubbled with curiosity. “I must say, this is awfully nerve-wracking and exciting. My heart’s pounding.”
“Ellie’s giving quite the smile, isn’t she, Mel?” Henry chuckled, and Melissa had to concede that.
“Yes. I get it. She’s a grown woman. It’s not my business.”
“Actually it is. We’re family.” I countered. “Within reason of course. Advice and support are both great, but we all have our boundaries. Anyway… you ready?” I asked, and Ellie nodded.
“I’ll do my best. I’ve been practising diligently and have a basic grasp on Aether Manipulation now.” With that, she let out a battle cry, and aether surged. The bluesteel batteries shuddered, and she clumsily used aether in lieu of any Skill to roughly direct the darkness, the area around us flashing blue, while I shone indigo, my light element sucked into Prominence Dawn. Prominence Dusk was likewise greedy, and suddenly the two rings blazed brilliantly. Spatial element joined the mix, and the two kinds of void were opposite each other.
“In that case! Come forth, the Dusk, shine, the Dawn! Create a new light!” At my order, the two rings spun into each other, and as Dusk and Dawn, the two flavours of the mysterious element I had used to repair the Tsukumogami of the Japanese Imperial Regalia, clashed, the rings merged into one, and the resulting effect was beautiful… a shimmering, circular array of flames ranging from blue to deep indigo and darker violet. Spatial energy whirled in a torrent, as all the elements within were converted at high efficiency. Arisu-san needs to see this, but… it’s hellishly difficult to do…
Sweat was dripping from me and instantly evaporating as I was assailed by amber letters in my vision.
Your Skill, Prominence Twilight has increased from Rank 4 to Rank 5 and reached the first bottleneck. You can now create a third variant, Prominence Umbra, which requires both your Elemental energies, and that of another, mixing them together. Prominence Umbra will then merge them into a single Element that combines the attributes of Light, Darkness and the mixed Elements, though you are unable to create Elements of great purity due to your insufficient understanding. Your affinity for the Spatial Element increases dramatically.
Your Skill, Space Manipulation, has increased from Rank 4 to Rank 5. You now have greater…
Your Skill, Crown Chakra Of Space, has increased from Rank 5 to Rank 6 and passed the first bottleneck. Your ability to generate Spatial Elemental energies has substantially increased…
“Perfect! Better than I’d hoped… although…” I began to drag in the mass of created spatial element, but it was indeed impure and mixed with light and darkness, not just Mangetsu and Shingetsu, but other flavours I didn’t understand. Trying to absorb them caused some disruption to my Chakras and subtle body, but I could quickly repair myself so it wasn’t a problem. The result was I obtained a decent bounty of spatial element, without needing to completely drain our Silos. Which is good. I have another use for that…
“Okay then… like I said, this might make you uncomfortable, your Majesty.” I gave a sardonic grin, before merging the crushed indigo powder with Territorial materials I had melted. I then infused them with a tide of spatial element, trying to feel the connections my Path was telling me could exist. And then… a faint whining sound filled the air, and the Great Star Of Africa, that massive diamond, as well as the three other gems I’d selected on the other treasures, shivered, as I drilled a small hole through each of them.
“Good God, that diamond’s priceless…” Prince Charles muttered, but the Queen waved him to silence.
“I’m far more curious about what’s going on.” She swigged her brandy, and realised her glass was empty and poured more, before taking another long swallow. “It’s only a jewel. The crown was lost before, remember? That bloody fool Cromwell.”
“I’m just making a link…” I grimaced, pouring in the mix of molten Territorial materials and indigo Etherite into the four gems. The fractured jewels were sealed, and it took a bit of fiddling with the concentration of the flexible Territorial materials, provided by the Materia Tree, to match the colours perfectly, as though the gems were untouched. Next, I began to drill miniscule, pinprick-sized holes in each of the gems and their paired counterparts, injecting a droplet of the compound and tuning it. The effort was laborious, and an hour passed by in utmost silence, but then I was done, thousands of gems paired. Now all that remained was spatial element, and I poured out what I’d created with Prominence Umbra, infusing it into the thousands of absorbent beads of material. Moments later, the four copies of the treasures I’d made vanished, merging with the shadow of the Regalia in the Boundary.
“Are… are you done?” Ellie asked, wiping my sweaty brow with her handkerchief. With a solemn shake of my head, I disappointed her.
“Nope. The fiddly work is done, but… now for the actual crafting.”
“That wasn’t crafting then? You could have fooled me.” she grumbled.
“I dare not fail to do my best for your grandmother.” I chuckled, my Eyes now picking up a second web around the treasures, not just adherence, but also elemental. “Right then, now for the fun part.”
My Ether Crafting, reinforced with Dvergr Techniques, was more than capable of using aether and elemental energies. The first thing I did was pour out endless streams of elements. Rubies and other red jewels were bathed in earth, there weren’t many orange jewels, but the few there were absorbed water element… I used pure elements, not my Spirit Water, to prevent complications. I’d also made some adjustments on the replicas to balance the elements better, so a lot of the pearls and white topaz on the replica were actually orange. Likewise, the yellow gems were keyed to water, not fire. I don’t need to be exact, it’s just… the first stage, and to represent and bolster the connections and adherence… green jewels such as emeralds drew in the wind element, and blue sapphires and the like drank darkness. Indigo was close enough for light, so amethysts took in that… which obviously left diamonds, pearls and other clear gems… they…are for adherence…
The flood I poured out was intense, and in the end, I plundered the Elemental Silos of my Territory, vast amounts of earth, water and wind, as well as darkness (and light from Haru’s Territory, since she allowed me access as my Vassal). Next up was Adherence Crafting, but not just that. I needed to link it to the Queen and her bloodline, but that wasn’t so simple, as I could see her Truesoul gave off only nigh-insignificant amounts of soullight. I need a workaround.
Gathering the adherence strands, I crafted the elementally filled gems, modifying the adherence as best I could. My own soullight was easily taken in, due to the compatibility with materials from the Materia Tree, and I used that as a base. I began to suffer, the complexity of this craft was extreme, each individual bit was easy enough, but repeating it hundreds, thousands of times was a nightmare, and another hour passed, then a second, and I realised I’d used all of Ellie’s date on this. Still, if I finish soon, we can still snatch a couple of hours in London…
“All right then…” I turned to the Queen. The room had been utterly silent for a while now, and my words broke the stillness. She looked up at me, and with a smile, I apologised. “This might sting a little, but it’s no worse than a blood test.” I promised. I flicked out a thin strand of aether, and drew blood from her, before Ether Healing kicked in, sealing her wound. I also poked into her subtle body, extracting a tiny bit of soullight, as I wasn’t prepared to risk harming her Truesoul. Even if I knew what I was doing, it’s too far too dangerous, she’s old…
Using Shapercraft and Alchemy, I turned the blood and soullight into a brilliant, sparkling droplet, and split it into four. The largest part entered the Cullinane I, while a part went to each of the other Regalia.
Your Skill, Alchemy, has increased from Rank 1 to Rank 3. You are better able to create items using mystical and magical fluids and understand the nature of mortal biology on a deeper level. You have gained the ability to enhance such fluids with deeper, more fundamental Energies such as Adherence and Soullight.
Yeah, perfect. This is taking every Skill I have. The link was weak and tremulous, but… Connections were my speciality. I wove my own soullight, stripping out the flavour, and was greeted by a hugely welcome message.
Your Skill, Soullight Crafting, has increased from Rank 5 to Rank 6 and advanced beyond the first bottleneck. Your Truesoul generates more and stronger Soullight, and your Soullight can be made pure, able to be absorbed by others. Efforts to regenerate and repair damage you your inviolate Truesoul are slightly more efficient.
Perfect, just what I need. I was able to further refine my Soullight, and though the alchemical spark of soullight bearing the Queen’s mark was weak, it would gradually consume the soullight I had fed in, becoming strengthened. It’ll take time to reach completion, and hopefully by then my Skills will have increased enough to reach the next stage.
The final thing was to make Connections with the adherence. My Skills had reached their peak, I couldn’t grow my talents further, stuck at the first bottleneck in both Manipulation and Crafting. But I could do enough for now, by making Bonds. I’d adjusted Kin Bonding And Restoration, this was similar. It didn’t take long, it was rough, and exhausted my remaining soullight, leaving me fatigued, and praying for a happy, peaceful and relaxing Christmas Day to recover, but a few minutes later I slumped down in my chair, Ellie looking on with concern. I gave her a faint, reassuring smile, and she asked the question on everyone’s minds. “Is it done?”
“I would say so.” I chuckled. “I would say so…” My Eyes glittered, even as another message from Yggdrasil greeted me.
Your Class, Bondweaver, has increased from Level Thirteen to Level Fourteen. You have an increased understanding of how to create Connections between inanimate yet linked creations. Items that function with greater potency when paired together are not unheard of but are a rare craft indeed. Your Crafting Skills are thus slightly enhanced when creating such objects. All your Connections and Bonds are slightly strengthened, and Shapercrafted Connections are strengthened yet further.
What do you mean, a rare craft indeed? Set items are commonplace in ARPGs and MMOs… oh well…
I gazed upon my handiwork, rudimentary, but with a solid foundation, and found myself rather impressed, and likewise troubled.
The Fisher Queen’s Crown [Item Class: Legendary] [Item Type: Law]
This crown, a treasured relic of times past, reforged from materials reclaimed from the hands of thieves and usurpers, is tied to the great Adherence of the Nation of Britan. While the Spirit of the Connected Royal Bloodline endures and thrives, so too shall Adherence be gathered and magnified, but should the Bloodline wither, so too shall the Adherence be spoiled, ravaging the land. Bountiful Wood Element shall spread throughout the land ruled by the Fisher Queen, promoting growth and renewal.
The strength of these abilities is magnified while a bearer of the Connected Royal Bloodline wields the Sovereign’s Orb Of Dominance, The Sovereign’s Ring Of Renewal, and The Rod That Commands the Merciful Lands And Equitable Seas. If all are used at once, the Adherence required to utilise these powers is significantly reduced.
This Crown is incomplete and requires significant Soullight from the Connected Royal Bloodline to further strengthen the ability to process the relevant Adherence, leading to further abilities for the bearer of this Crown.
Not bad, and yeah, the set effect is minor, but… it’s still worthwhile.
The Sovereign’s Orb Of Dominance [Item Class: Legendary] [Item Type: Law]
This Orb, a symbol of the Divine Right of Kings and the Adherence within, is tied to the Adherence of the Nation of Great Britain. An area can be declared Eminent Domain, making it functionally a part of the Nation of Great Britain, though if the Territory or Country involved contests this, it will take significant Adherence to affect the annexation. Likewise, an area of Great Britain can be released if so desired, returning to its original affiliation. These abilities can only be used by a member of the Connected Royal Bloodline.
Filled with a potent Light and Darkness Element, a temporary barrier, similar to a Territory Barrier, can be erected in any of the land of the Nation of Great Britain, yet this will continuously consume Adherence, and the rate of drain will increase if the barrier is impacted.
The strength of these abilities is magnified while a bearer of the Connected Royal Bloodline wields The Fisher Queen’s Crown, The Sovereign’s Ring Of Renewal, and The Rod That Commands the Merciful Lands And Equitable Seas. If all are used at once, the Adherence required to utilise these powers is significantly reduced.
This Orb is incomplete and requires significant Soullight from the Connected Royal Bloodline to further strengthen the ability to process the relevant Adherence, leading to further abilities for the bearer of this Orb.
And yeah, this is quite dangerous. Fortunately, only the Queen and her family can utilise it… but I wonder what effect it would have trying to claim someone else’s Territory by force?
The Sovereign’s Ring Of Renewal [Item Class: Legendary] [Item Type: Law]
This Ring, a symbol of the duty of a King, is tied to the Adherence of the Nation of Great Britain. Using the power of Adherence and Wind Elemental energies, a purifying Wind can be conjured in any area of the Nation of Great Britain, dispersing buildups of misfortune, Woe, and negative Karma. The Adherence drained will be increased by the size of the area and the strength of the ill swept away. This ability can only be used by a member of the Connected Royal Bloodline.
In addition, the Ring draws upon the Adherence of the Nation of Great Britain, and constantly invigorates the wearer, rejuvenating them, and it will also react by releasing a shield of Wind if the wearer is ever in grave peril…
Okay, no need to read the parts about it being a set item and incomplete again… onto the last item.
The Rod That Commands the Merciful Lands And Equitable Seas [Item Class: Legendary] [Item Type: Law]
This Rod, a symbol of both the Mercy and Wrath of a King, is tied to the Adherence of the Nation of Great Britain. Using the power of Adherence and Earth Elemental energies, when on the sovereign ground of the Nation of Great Britain, the bearer can call upon the Earth itself to pass judgement, summoning mighty spikes and blades of Earth. Using the power of Adherence and Water Elemental energies, instead can those who are also citizens of the Nation of Great Britain be healed and rejuvenated by powerful Water Elemental energies. The more citizens affected and the greater the scope, the more Adherence is consumed. These abilities can only be used by a member of the Connected Royal Bloodline…
Once more, no need to repeat the obvious here… so… “It seems you’re in for quite a treat, your Majesty.” I chuckled. “Honestly, I can’t take all the credit though, the long history of your country and all the accumulated adherence is doing most of the work. I didn’t even set the abilities, they just kind of chose themselves.” I gave a brief explanation, earning awed stares from those here, and a knowing smirk from the Queen.
The Americans were smarter than they knew. Japan had immense adherence, but conversely, that made the Humanity Declaration so damaging, finishing off the weakened Regalia, and also scattering the adherence that had built up over thousands of years. We can surely reclaim some of it, but much will be gone, or muddied. Still, it was very helpful seeing the process here, and that’ll help me in the future. But… someone doesn’t seem pleased…
“That’s all very well, and I’m very grateful…” Ellie began. “…but my date? What about my date?”
Seeing her pouting, arms crossed, while trying to hide the pride and admiration her eyes were directing at me, I couldn’t help but chuckle. Damn, she’s so cute. All right, we can still squeeze out a couple of hours and I’ll be back for when everyone’s gathering for the opening of gifts around six in the morning…
