Hikawa Ren, Tsukuyomi-jinja, Kyoto
“And just why are you tagging along, Mio-chan? Can’t you see I’m on a date with my dear Ren-kun?” Asami-chan, his girlfriend, strange as though that felt to say, tugged on his hand, which was clasped within hers. Ren still felt a little embarrassed at the closeness, but the heat was almost sweet, even as it stung. I hope I’m not blushing, or that would just be too embarrassing.
“Oh, come on, Asami-chan, don’t be like that.” Mio-chan chuckled. It felt odd, being so informal with the older girl, but since she was one of the closest friends of his girlfriend, it seemed strange to refer to her as -san, while Asami-chan was… what a strange line of thought. I’m getting distracted. Although… That naturally led to the uncomfortable scenario where he ended up calling one of Akio-san’s innumerable girlfriends Kana-chan, which amused the older girl greatly, but then caused awkwardness with the others.
“Do not mind it, Ren-sama.” “Yes, it is fine. Nobody disdains earnest efforts.” “It is only if you are being insulting or arrogant…” “…which you are not, Ren-sama. Navigating social circumstances is a key ability…” “…one that cannot be numbered or Ranked.” “More is the pity, right Chiaki?” “Yes, poor Akio-sama, Chiasa!”
His twin sisters read his mind, as they were doing more often recently. There were things he kept hidden deep, away from their burgeoning abilities, which grew ever stronger as Akio-san and his group put more and more work into developing them. At first… I was jealous, I admit it. I was Hikawa Ren, of one of the thickest shrine bloodlines in Japan! My ability, meagre though it still was, was potent compared to all but my sisters, who shared my bloodline, and the noble Lady Diviner, of course. Though I suppose I should be calling her Matsumuro-san now, or even Tsukiko-san, though…
Ren squirmed internally at the thought. While Matsumuro-san seemed to revel in finally having a name that could be spoken, an identity which was hers alone, and not merely belonging to the Gods, it was difficult for Ren to address her informally, for reasons both spiritual and… practical. She’s an incredible beauty, and a lot older too. Calling her Tsukiko-san is a step too far for me…
“And there you have it!” Mio-chan put her hands on her waist, smiling at the pair of them. With her black hair bunched up into pigtails and her modest chest, she looked a little younger than Asami-chan, but just like Kana-chan, she had the confidence of a girl who knew she was pretty. And it seems she enjoys teasing me. It’s embarrassing, but… I suppose it’s a sign of acceptance.
“After all, if it’s just a date, why bring along your sisters, Ren-kun? Unless you’re trying to imitate Akio-kun. Anyway, speaking of, Kana-chan’s off with him to Mount Atago, isn’t she? His sister too, along with some of the others. Quite a group date. So anyway, I’m at a loose end. Sure, some of the other Pilgrims are fun, and I’ve been mingling, networking, but…” Mio-chan winked slyly. “…sometimes I want to hang around with my besties. It’s not like I have a handsome young boyfriend, is it?”
Ren flushed at that, and oddly enough, his sisters giggled quietly. They’d never shown any interest in much but their learning before, about how to be perfect shrine maidens, and in… in me, I suppose. They treated me like I was a little lord. It felt good, massaged my ego, but… now I know what true talent and importance looks like. Anyway, I’m happy for Chiaki and Chiasa, but concerned at the same time…
Even at their elite shrine school, a cut above the almost secular one Asami-chan and her friends attended, the difference as stark as between Hanafubuki Private Academy and an ordinary state school, his sisters were… rather isolated. Honestly, I think the others found them creepy, the way they were often in their own world, and… almost seemed as one person, split in half. Nobody bullied them, of course, and not just because they are from the Hikawa family. We shrine families have had to keep our secrets for fifteen hundred years. We have discipline. But…
“Not with an attitude like that!” Asami-chan laughed loudly. Ren loved her laugh. It was vivacious, bright, and… it didn’t judge. “You’re cute, well-connected and quite the tease, Mio-chan. Just go for it!”
“Maybe I will. Fancy a second girlfriend, Ren-kun?” she smiled winsomely, though Ren was no fool, not anymore, and he had picked up some skills at understanding women.
“I’m not Akio-san, Mio-chan. Asami-chan is more than enough for me.”
“Oh, Ren-kun, my little darling!” Asami-chan pulled him into an embrace, and his head was very happy, buried as it was in the chest part of her hakama. Asami-chan was quite well-endowed, and while before, Ren’s tastes had run a little different… I’m only blushing from the feel of Asami-chan’s bounciness, not because I was smitten with Shaeula at first sight. Now that’s just an amusing relic of my stupidity. Though it’s still a little bit awkward, as she knows what I’m thinking, and loves to tease. Now though, it’s just a memory, one to look back on and learn from.
“Get your own, Mio-chan!” Asami-chan put on an angry face, but, as they queued, ready to make their offerings to the shrine, the very one where Matsumuro-san held court all these years, and was doing so now, imperious and regal, it was more a play to the audience, those around them looking on with amusement.
Important people. Nobles, other shrine families, soldiers, bureaucrats and mercenaries, even some strange Fae…
“If you’re dead set on sharing, may I suggest Akio-kun? If you dress up as Kana-chan, slip into his bed and go for a fait accompli…”
“I’m glad you think I’m that brave, Asami-chan…” Mio-chan bantered back, with the casual, practised ease of old, dear friends, something else Ren enjoyed, as he’d been far too aloof and… quite frankly, now he could look back on it objectively… annoying, to have many friends, and none of them particularly close.
“…but even if I could fool Akio-kun and slip into his bed, I wouldn’t. I don’t have the guts to be part of his harem, nor do I want to cross Kana-chan. So no thanks. Although…” she turned her attention to the twins, rushed over and draped an arm around them both. Ordinarily, they would have flinched at such an act, but just as Ren had changed, so too had they.
“…you two sure are popular. And I know Akio-kun thinks about you both a lot.” She turned, winking at Ren. “If you do decide to go for a harem, why don’t you try snagging Aiko-chan for a bit of revenge? Though Akio-kun still wins, a two for one exchange!”
Ren shook his head at that. Before, I‘d have grown rather jealous at that quip, it’s true. But… He paled, remembering the horrors of Kyoto. Being here again didn’t help, though at least they’d safely passed through Kiyomizu-dera and the other related shrines without his sisters having seemed traumatised, though… Hotene-san didn’t look so great, fortunately, Keomi-chan was with her. She’s a bit of an idiot, but… it’s hard to stay upset when she’s about. Anyway… my sisters have their own path, and I have mine.
“Trying to get me killed, Mio-chan? Are you sure it was me you were after and not Asami-chan? Jealous, maybe? Besides… I’m not sure how proper it is to say, but I don’t get the impression that Aiko-san is into boys much. Maybe… maybe she’s a… no, I guess I don’t want to say.”
“Oh, you found me out!” Mio-chan teased. “I wanted my own harem of Kana-chan and Asami-chan, but my dreams are dashed!” Her smile showed she was joking. “Aiko-chan, huh? I’m not really sure. She’s a mystery. But then, her mind is totally warped by her hilarious levels of brocon. I thought that only happened in fiction. Bit like you, Ren-kun!”
“Hey now.” Ren tutted. “It’s embarrassing to admit, but I did revel in the attention and praise my sisters gave me. But I’m not some sort of possessive pervert.” He let out a long sigh, enjoying his closeness with Asami-chan, and… If I’m being honest, life’s so much more fun now I’ve realised that I’m not some sort of special chosen one. Don’t get me wrong, I know I’m not ordinary, but… I’ll just do my best and let those above me take care of the rest. “I do admit to being worried though.” He gazed at his sisters thoughtfully, who both giggled charmingly again.
“There is no need, Ren-sama.” “Yes, like you, we know our roles and our desires. “That is correct. We will only do what we wish to do.” “And right now… we wish to be a part of this.” “You feel it too, Ren-sama. The sun burns brilliant within you.” Yes, you have finally reached your true self, the self…” “…we always knew lurked within. So…” “…have no fear, we will always respect and honour you as our older brother, Ren-sama, but…” “…if you are a sun, then Akio-sama, he shall be…”
Then they finished together. “…the very universe itself, outshining all others!”
“I guess they’re trying to keep you grounded, Ren-kun.” Asami-chan softly kissed his cheek, and he cursed that such intimacy still made him blush but also enjoyed that it made his heart race. I derided Akio-san as a womaniser, not a serious man. But… we aren’t supposed to live alone. I get it now. But Asami-chan’s more than enough for me. A sun only needs one solar system. I’ll leave the… universe… as they put it… to Akio-san.
“Don’t worry.” he remarked dryly. “I’m done getting carried away. But don’t get me wrong.” After a moment of hesitation, he reached out, pulling in Asami-chan, so that their bodies were touching again, and he ignored her teasing giggle, face red. “I’m thrilled I managed to master the flame of the sun as well, and I’ve become more complete. But how can I grow conceited? After all, Aiko-san, as well as Imperial Princess Mikasa…”
“You get to call her Yukiko, Ren-kun.” Asami-chan teased. “She doesn’t like being thought of as a Princess. I don’t get it. I’d love to be one…”
“I think it’s lonely though.” Ren observed. “But don’t worry about that… you’re…” he paused, hating his red face in this moment. So embarrassing, but… “…my Princess!”
“Whoa, how cringe. Now I don’t think I want to be your next girlfriend anymore, Ren-kun!” Mio-chan managed, after her laughter finished. “But I get it, I think. It’s like how Kana-chan used to get pissed off at all the guys hitting on us thinking we were easy and dumb, just because of how we looked and dressed, and because we were still in school.”
“Exactly.” Ren agreed. “It’s tied to my earlier point. I’m not growing arrogant again, but… I’m proud of what I’ve achieved. We should be judged on who we are and what we’ve done, not what we are. Though if I’m being frank, I sometimes feel I’m falling behind. Chiaki, Chiasa… you’re both very popular. And if I can be so bold, while your abilities are amazing, and only better now you’ve gained new Eyes…” Ren winced at that. I sort of want them too, but the pain… hey, we all have weaknesses. Akio-san’s is an inability to say no to women, mine is I can’t handle pain. Mine will cause less trouble in the long run, won’t it!
“…I don’t think that’s all they care about. What you can do.”
The twins exchanged a wry glance, and Ren was once more pleased to see the richness of their expressions had increased dramatically.
“Of course, everyone is very kind.” “And we are doing things we never would before.” “But what matters is what we want, and…” “…we very much desire to see everyone grow. You included.” “Ren-sama, your new sunlight shines brilliantly…” “…very noble and regal, Ren-sama. To our Eyes now…” “…we see a different world, but…” “…it was the world we imagined. So please watch over us, Ren-sama…” “…and give us your support in our future endeavours.” “We will never be unhappy, we promise.” “Yes, we find joy in what we must do, what we wish to do.”
“…so please…” they repeated. “…cheer for us. As we forge a new future.”
“Hard to say no to that. They grow up so fast!” Asami-chan chuckled, hugging Ren close.
“Yes, yes.” Mio-chan agreed, her expression warm. “It’s cute. That was almost a confession, wasn’t it?”
“I think you misunderstand.” “Yes, you mistake us.” The twins shook their heads in sync. “We would not aspire so high.” “We have more pragmatic goals.” “While the honour perhaps should fall to Matsumuro-sama…” “…or Kana-sama, perhaps…” “…we have no intention of relinquishing the position.” “None at all. We will make it ours.” “Akio-sama does not know…” “…he is utterly unguarded with us, and sees us purely as younger sisters…” “…he is soft on sisters…”
“No kidding.” Mio-chan muttered.
“…so he never bars our telepathy…” “…even when he perhaps should…” The twins blushed, and Ren scowled.
“Don’t pry when he’s… with the others.” Ren managed a euphemism. “…you’re a few years too young for that yet. I know it’s hard to retain your innocence, when you see all the lies in this world, and more now, but… please. Stay the Chiaki and Chiasa I know for at least a little longer.”
They giggled, exchanging warm glances. “You have nothing to fear, Ren-sama…” “…yes, nothing at all. We are not curious. Besides, Shiro…” “…yes, Shiro… she will not speak to us if we call her Shiro-sama…” “…which causes us concern, as she is one of Akio-sama’s noble wives, and more…” “…is host to a Divinity, great and noble Taṇhā…” “…but we respect her wishes, difficult as it is…” “…oh, we became distracted…” they tittered, and Ren found himself grinning.
They can be accepted. That’s one change that we welcome. No more are their natures and gifts seen as weird and off-putting. In this company, they’re treasured, have friends, those who would fight for them…
“…Shiro says it is more fun to learn in the future.” “…we are in no rush. Our duties… regardless… we can use Akio-sama’s mind to talk to Eri-sama, and…” “…Rossweisse-sama, the noble Valkyrie. Without his knowledge.” “Though we hide nothing, you understand. We would not. But…” “…we want the position. First Adherent is gone, noble Rossweisse-sama has it, as is only fitting, for the aid she has rendered…” “…and the unlikely love she feels. But… there is a position for the First Demagogue. Though the name…” “…it is unpleasant. But we researched, and…” “…originally it simply meant a charismatic preacher who sways through arguments…” “…though now it means a liar, a manipulator…” “…regardless. That shall be ours.”
“But… isn’t there room for only one First?” Mio-chan asked, and Ren was concerned. I don’t want you two doing anything foolish like becoming more one person in two bodies. It’s not just me who can see the slight differences between the two of you are becoming more noticeable…
“Worry not, Ren-sama. We are two halves of a whole…” “…but each half is a unique being too. We…” “…are not each other, though…” “…we will never be apart, nor do we wish to be.” “…and in this case… we are two-in-one, yet separate, so… Rossweisse-sama believes, as soon as Akio-sama’s Path strengthens and stabilises enough to allow further appointments…” “…we will be able to both become First Demagogue. Perhaps we shall reclaim the term, make it what it once was before.”
As the twins finished, Asami-chan shook her head, a smile on her face. “That’s adorable, and impressive. To be so driven, yet so young. But… I think you’re right to worry, Ren-kun. Oh well, I’ll console you!”
Ren smiled to himself as she kissed his cheek again. He returned the favour, before addressing his oddly bold, resolute sisters. “If you know what you’re doing, I won’t stop you. It seems you know more about this than I do. Just… don’t sacrifice your future happiness for mere duty, okay? Promise me.”
The two exchanged a long, silent look, doubtless communicating mentally, before they came over and patted Ren’s shoulder in a manner that made them seem older.
“Of course we will not… dear brother.” “Are you not aware, Akio-sama hates sacrifice, Ren-kun.” With that they changed their manner of address, as if to show how serious they were. “It was our dream to serve the Kami, but…” “…we have a greater dream. And we will prove the best for the role.” “That is correct, dear brother. We demand it to be us. It is a prize we want.” “And a prize we deserve. For there are two of us…” “…so surely we can be twice as potent as any other First Demagogue who exists.” We will spread the truth of this world, Ren-kun. And all shall listen.”
They paused, communicating again. “It may seem selfish. We like helping others, dear brother. Our abilities have a true purpose now.” “So we do not think it unreasonable to seek reward for that. It does not diminish the deed, Ren-kun.”
“I suppose it doesn’t.” he agreed mildly. “Oh, it’s our turn.” They had reached the heart of the shrine, a group of idols in front of them leaving for the tents. He was interested, of course, seeing such famous and beautiful celebrities, but…I won’t look, not in front of Asami-chan. I’m not Akio-san!
“Yes, it is our turn. So, aren’t you going to say a few words?” Asami-chan grinned, and Ren sighed.
“Just… do what you want. If you need a shoulder to cry on, I’m here, okay? Though don’t expect me to stand up to Akio-san if he hurts your feelings, okay? I’m not that brave or stupid. The best I can do is speak my mind.”
“Thank you, dear brother.” “We will always ask your advice, Ren-kun.” “But for now… we must train harder.” “Our gifts are still slightly too poor for us to take the role we wish.” “The Eyes are a good start, we see the world differently, but…” “…we need more, Ren-kun. All elements. And Connection to spread them.”
“All, huh?” Mio-chan giggled, having made her offerings. “I guess we’ve been slacking, haven’t we, Asami-chan? Falling behind Kana-chan is only natural, she’s got her sugar-daddy, but…”
“Yeah. That’s it! Tonight, we’ll crack a second element! You’ll help, won’t you, Ren-kun?”
“I guess so. I’m free, now I’ve endured my own hellish training, so… sure, I’d be happy to.”
“Me too?” Mio-chan giggled as she asked, and Ren rolled his eyes.
“Yes, since you’re the dear friend of my girlfriend.” He didn’t stumble over saying that anymore. “I can help you out.”
As Mio-chan thanked him, Ren considered what his sisters had told him. First Demagogue, huh? It seems to me that’s a commitment rather greater than any ordinary ties. But… watching as his sisters smiled to themselves and exchanged greetings with some of the queuing Pilgrims behind them, getting cheerful responses without any fear or disdain, he sighed inwardly. …as lives go, I’d rather see my sisters as they are now, than the quiet, withdrawn pair who lived in their own world, only coming out of it to speak to me or our parents. Though as their older brother, It’s definitely a worrying and complicated feeling…

Kim Eui, Tenryū-ji, Kyoto
As Eui waited patiently for her turn to come, she listened to the idle conversation of her fellow Koreans. Hyeong Suk-ja-unni, who was the closest to her in age, smiled at her, idly circled by a number of her Winged Diamonds, though these had been blunted to prevent accidents, and many of them were in… interesting… shapes, such as spheres, pyramids and even… is that supposed to be a statue of a person? Her Guildmaster and childhood friend, perhaps? If so… it’s rather crude. It’ll need more work…
Eui didn’t see herself as a person particularly adept at dealing with the opposite sex. At Choe-Museon, she had done what her parents asked, which was to keep her head down, work hard and accrue both good grades and the favour of children from suitably important families, without getting entangled, especially with boys. And when the chaos started… that just reinforced my disdain for men, some of their atrocities… though I suppose that’s not exactly fair, considering Chae Cho-Hee had been behind a great deal of it… but then, she was the puppet master behind the scenes, and I’m not foolish enough to believe it was all her and her brother’s doing. One of the books we studied in English class was Lord Of The Flies, after all.
However, what she did know… “Excuse me, Suk-ja-unni? If I may, please don’t show off that trick when you return to Korea.”
“Oh? Why not? I’ve improved my Skill here by leaps and bounds.” Suk-ja-unni seemed surprised.
“It’s just… that’s not a very flattering likeness.” She pointed a finger at the misshapen Diamond. “I’d hate him to get the wrong idea, think that you’re mocking him.”
“Wrong idea?” Suk-ja-unni giggled, seeming younger, which made Eui feel comfortable around her. Not that she had any problems with the other Korean women, they were just… intense… each in their own ways. “If Ji-ho-oppa could get a clue, I’d be delighted. But… men can be blind when they want to be. Oh, sorry.” She suddenly apologised. “I know you don’t like thinking about…”
“It’s fine.” Eui insisted flatly. And it mostly is. Everyone here is right. Only through power can I take control of my own destiny. I will become a Cultivator, learn many things, and never be vulnerable again. “I don’t hold all men responsible. There are good people here. I’m sure your oppa is a good man too.”
“Yes, though we didn’t do so well at Choe-Museon.” Suk-ja-unni sighed. “Here I succeeded in my tasks at least. Akio-oppa managed to master crystal element, so I’m no longer needed as a battery. But he’s generous enough that he’s contracted me to the end of the Pilgrimage, so I can get all the benefits. In exchange…” She pumped her fist cheerfully. “…I’ll be sure to fill up all the batteries I can before I go. Every little bit I can contribute helps. Even if Akio-oppa can replace me, he’s still got a lot of other demands on his time. Oh, Ji-ho-oppa will hardly believe how I’ve changed.”
“That’s right.” Violet-unni, the brash young woman, a handful of years their senior, came barrelling over, having made her offerings. With her dyed purple hair, vivid scorpion tattoos on her bare arm, and her… rather punk aesthetic, today she was in ripped purple jeans and a black tank top showing off her toned belly and muscular arms, despite the cold, as well as her cleavage, she cut a bold figure, and Eui admired her. My parents would hate her. She’s not… not proper. But being proper didn’t help in Choe-Museon. Only those who, like me, abandoned that, did whatever we could to cling on, to endure, no matter how wretched or shameful, managed to survive until the end. I know… I know my parents still love me, but they are still ashamed. I should be thankful they let me come to Japan. That in itself is shameful too. But… here I can live without judgement and learn what I need to. I’ll never be helpless again.
Violet-unni (as she insisted that Bora-unni made her ‘sound ancient, not the vivacious young go-getter of a Hunter she was’, her own words) hugged Suk-ja, who only grinned weakly, her Winged Diamonds of various shapes widening their orbit so as not to strike her. “You’re going back soon. Me too. Though not alone.” Violet-unni grinned. “In the new year, looks like I’ll be guiding little Hinata around again, as she wants to see just what the Violet Scorpions can do for her, and for Akio-oppa. Chances are we’ll be calling in on you guys then.”
Eui nodded, understanding. “I… feel ashamed. Our country begged for aid and then betrayed Akio-oppa and those who came to answer our call.”
“Yeah well, I’m the first to say our country is full of old-fashioned, women-hating shitbags…” Violet-unni chuckled nastily. “…but this was on a few old fools. Still, they were our elected representatives, so guess we’ve all got to pay the price. Little Hinata is ruthless when it comes to that sort of thing. Maybe we’ll hire your Guild to support us if any shit goes down.”
“That would be nice. The sort of jobs the Guilds are doing in Korea aren’t too exciting.” Suk-ja-unni agreed. “Mostly just policing trouble in the Boundary and also on the border with North Korea. Their Chosen are growing… aggressive. And there have been some sightings of the Chinese.”
“Cultivators?” Eui asked, interested. Quite often she went around with Matriarch Daiyu during the Pilgrimage, but today she was following Akio-oppa to Mount Atago, for some ceremony where she would be both a witness and honoured for her past deeds.
“Hard to say. Chosen, certainly.” Suk-ja-unni squirmed in Violet-unni’s grasp, trying to shrug. “Not everyone can tell them apart. Tensions are running high. But those jobs are risky and don’t pay that well. I’ve been spoiled here. Nice accommodation, great food, and I even got trained, and got to go on Pilgrimage. Though I do feel a little guilty…”
“I don’t. Fuck our Gods.” Violet-unni swore. She had a very foul mouth, but a kind heart, and honestly, Eui wished to be a bit more like her. Though certainly not as… flashy. No, perhaps a mixture of Matriarch Daiyu’s calm elegance, and Violet-unni’s unconcerned attitude?
“If they want our respect, start forking over the stats, that’s what I say!” she groused. “The Japanese Kami were good enough to bless us without discrimination. I’ll set up a little shrine at my home as thanks.”
“If I’m being fair…” Suk-ja-unni finally struggled free of Violet-unni’s embrace. “…maybe they would. If we properly asked. But we Hunters…”
“Yeah.” Violet-unni winced. “We’re the sort who stab or shoot first, and ask questions never, just pick up the loot. But we’re rethinking our approach, at least we are, aren’t we? Anyway, once we get a Ring Gate down in Korea, we can come and go as we please for the training, so… I’ve got my little bro scouting locations, but do me a solid, keep an eye out too, okay?”
Eui let her mind drift. I must keep my composure at all times. The way of Cultivation is first to master oneself, only then can we master the might of the Earth and the majesty of the Heavens. Making her offerings, she returned to the group, and as she did so, Soo-ah-unni, an alumna from Choe-Museon, and one of Yu-mi-unni’s recruits, smiled at her, beckoning her over. Seeing her in the Adamant uniform, beautiful, prideful and with an eye-catching figure, Eui couldn’t help glance down at her own body. I’m filling out again, after escaping Choe-Museon, but I’ve never been… full-figured.
“Don’t fret, little Eui.” Soo-ah-unni smiled warmly. “You’re still young. When you reach my age, you’re stuck with what you’ve got, or at least we were.”
Beside her, Nari-unni chuckled. With her dyed red hair and heart-shaped face, as well as her lithe, sporty body, she stood out. “Oh, very true. My bust has increased by one cup size, and I’d swear I’m half an inch taller as well. How is that even possible? More importantly… after training yesterday I tried my old gymnastics routines and totally aced them.”
“I don’t know how you have the energy for that, Nari, darling.” Soo-ah-unni waved a hand, as if to swipe away the thought of more work. “I’m utterly exhausted after all that effort. But in the end, It’ll be worth it, won’t it, Ji-hye darling?”
“I hope so.” The half-Chinese woman grimaced, though that did little to supress her charm. The final two members of the Korean contingent, Yu-mi-unni and Da-eun-unni, were talking to some of Akio-oppa’s friends. They were all kind to Eui, which filled her with relief, but… sometimes it’s hard. Though my Japanese is coming along well, so soon I’ll be able to communicate with those more my age naturally. Of course, she knew English, but there was something reassuring speaking the proper tongue of the land she was dwelling in. And I’m in no rush to go home. If I consider this simply another boarding school… it’s better than Choe-Museon.
“As for me…” Ji-hye-unni continued. “…I’m barely able to stand up. But I won’t fall down. Not until my brothers kneel before me.”
“So cool. Yeah, I’m totally up for seeing that!” Violet-unni laughed wickedly. “I don’t like them, arrogant bastards. Think they’re hot shit at A-Rank, when that’s just politics, I wouldn’t wipe my ass with their Skills. Especially not now.”
Even Suk-ja-unni nodded. “It’s true. But here… it’s a holy land for learning. Honestly… maybe my Guild should be paying Akio-oppa to train me, rather than the other way around. But hey, money is important to us Chosen.”
“It’s important to us girls, darling.” Soo-ah-unni giggled, her plump lips and beautiful face making her look like a model. “More to the point, you’ll certainly show up your brothers, if the way you’ve grown stronger is any indication, Ji-hye, but… it takes more than just that. Financial independence. Now, don’t get me wrong.” She winked, her long eyelashes fluttering. “Yu-mi darling, our dear Officer…” she chuckled at that, getting wry smiles from the older women here. “…brought us in to use our wealth and influence, or rather, that belonging to our families. But if we want to take full advantage, we need to leverage our training and influence here. A virtuous feedback loop. You heard it here first…” She winked once more, finger to her luscious lips signalling it was a secret. “…that Adamant will also be training us in secondary professions, not just combat, when we meet a certain standard and… are prepared to undergo a second set of Oaths to Akio-nim and our pretty Shaeula, as well as further probing by Telepathy.”
“Oh?” Eui, despite not being in Adamant, and having no particular wish to join, was slightly curious… It’s not that I don’t trust Akio-oppa or those around him, far from it. I… no, never mind that. It’s just… I don’t want to split my focus. And Matriarch Daiyu will see I receive any training and resources I require. She takes her duties and her Sect extremely seriously.
“Yes. Not that it’s easy to back out now.” Soo-ah-unni chuckled, and Nari-unni agreed.
“Yeah, it’s… very clever. Adamant is managed both as a cult of personality, a military institution, and also it shares a lot of similarity with the way our Olympic teams were managed. Everyone’s doing it for themselves, but… the team as a whole is emphasised. The successes of one are celebrated by all, and… if you quit, don’t do your best… you’re not just hurting yourself, but your friends, your teammates, dragging them down…”
“I’m not leaving.” Ji-hye insisted. “No matter what I’m asked to do.”
“If Akio-nim pulled you to bed before Yu-mi, darling, she’d riot.” Soo-ah-unni chuckled, and Eui exchanged a glance with Suk-ja-unni, who giggled silently, understanding. Yes, Yu-mi-unni’s very serious. But she’s also too proud. She wants him to chase, but I don’t think he has the time or the inclination for that. I don’t blame him. The women Akio-oppa surrounded himself with were gorgeous, but most of them were… quirky, was the most charitable way she could put it. I think he’s happy, but… his life will never be easy. With his power and influence, he could sit back and live the life of a king… instead, he trains harder than anyone. I suppose… I respect that. I… wish he was my real brother.
Face slightly pink, she listened as Soo-ah-unni explained. “We’re not there yet, but this Pilgrimage is certainly helping, darlings. You’ve seen your status updates? Even out of date they’re still impressive.”
As the women nodded, Violet chuckled, calling them all ‘small chicks’ which was true, as they all lacked Divine Favours, but even so… Favours are a shortcut, Matriarch Daiyu insists. Nice to have, if you can tame them and master them, not let them master you, but far from essential.
“Of course, our primary role is to be Akio-nim’s private and very eye-catching army.” she continued. “So our training will focus on that, but… a sideline in advanced Ether Healing beyond what we need as soldiers, Chirurgery, or even Ether Crafting… and the potential of making our own capital there, being independent, powerful women… I think you see the benefits. Our darling Yu-mi certainly does, as do the Commanders.”
“I don’t care about my wealth.” Ji-hye-unni insisted, her slightly exotic face set in a frown of unyielding resolve. “I care about being vindicated. So I’ll swear anything, do anything, but…” her expression softened, and she nodded at Nari-unni. “You are right. I do already feel like this is a team, a family. And it’s only been a week! Though I suppose It’s felt longer due to the time dilation in this Boundary. If we train like this for months… I won’t ever want to leave. It’s hard, it’s exhausting, but… it’s satisfying.”
“I could do with less exhaustion.” Soo-ah-unni smiled. “But I knew what I was sighing up for, darlings. Besides…” She turned her smile on Eui. “…we’ve seen what happened to poor Eui, so… as women of a certain type of family, our choices can be a bit limited. Don’t you think we should own our choice to be here, make the most of it, and go all the way?”
As Eui and the others agreed, Soo-ah-unni suddenly pretended to panic. “Oh, Yu-mi’s coming back. Pretend we were all being serious, okay? And I didn’t say anything about our future plans. Oh, Yu-mi, darling, we’re ready! Lead on!”
As Yu-mi-unni arrived, followed by her other recruit, Eui met Suk-ja-unni’s eyes, and they both smiled too. Yes, this Pilgrimage has been fascinating. There may only be a few days to go, but… even after that… training can continue, and together, we can stop a tragedy like Choe-Museon from ever happening again… I won’t… I won’t be helpless, not ever again!

Seta Hayato, Tenryū-ji, Kyoto
“I’ll bear that in mind.” Hayato ran a hand through his blond hair as he addressed the two women before him. He didn’t know them well, though Yu-mi-san was a regular fixture during planning sessions, and was clearly very fond of Akio-kun. “We’ll catch up this evening after Pilgrimage, all right, Yu-mi-san, Da-eun-san?”
“I’ve told you, there’s no need for honorifics.” Yu-mi-san repeated, not for the first time. “It’s troublesome across nationalities, and we even have Fae and Yōkai here. So long as words are respectful, I think that’s more than enough.”
“Don’t mind Hayato…” Hina, his beloved fiancée, smiled warmly. Today she looked very fetching in shrine maiden hakama, a fresh look that seemed more real than cosplay, unlike poor Aimi-chan, whose figure was… ill-suited… for such, not that he’d ever be foolish enough to voice such concerns, and not merely out of consideration for her, but… Hina’s the only woman for me. And the only one I’ll look at. Though… Akio-kun has trodden his own path, and it’s not for us to criticise him, only support him. After all, Yu-mi-san here is a clear example of his future strife…
“…he struggles with informality. Not in that way…” Hina’s smile was radiant. “…it is just that politeness is ingrained into him.”
“I see. Well, do as you see fit, but rest assured, I’ll not take offense. I leave off plenty of honorifics myself, don’t I?” Yu-mi-san countered.
“In that case…” Yasu-san spoke up boisterously, his hair, bleached to resemble Hayato-san’s, an irony that wasn’t lost on him, rather tidier and more even than usual. I daresay that was Karen-chan’s doing. Despite being older than them all, everyone followed Akio-kun in calling her Karen-chan, and indeed she didn’t seem much older than them in terms of temperament, and was good company when drinks were involved, perhaps a legacy of her misspent days at a black company. Now there’s a tale worth telling. How Akio-kun crushed her wretched boss by accident, fulfilling a promise he made to her in passing.
“…I won’t stand on ceremony, Yu-mi, Da-eun!” Yasu-kun finished loudly.
“Please don’t.” Yu-mi-san smiled, before snapping off a crisp Adamant salute, hands clutched in a diamond shape. Da-eun-san copied it, a little clumsier, and they left, to rejoin their fellow countrywomen.
“Oh. Eyeing her in her uniform, are you?” Karen-chan was smiling, but her expression was rather cold, and everyone picked up on that, including Yasu-kun, who was starting to sweat. “If so, maybe I should put it on for you? Of course, if I did, we’d have to break up, wouldn’t we?”
“Hey, no… sorry, Karen-chan! I wasn’t ogling, I promise. The uniform is definitely sexy, and you could totally pull it off, but… don’t go chasing after Akio-kun, I promise I’m more fun!”
“Cut him some slack.” Aimi-chan giggled, her hakama straining against her figure. “He’s an idiot, but he’s a loyal idiot. Apart from his wandering eyes, but what man’s eyes don’t wander?”
“Mine.” Hayato insisted with a quiet chuckle. As Hina smiled warmly at him, he shrugged. “But it’s true, Karen-chan, Yasu-kun’s no cheater.”
“Chance would be a fine thing…” Shugo-kun snorted, and Yasu-kun howled at him to shut up, bringing more laughter from the group as they headed to the tents to enter the Boundary.
“Besides, Yu-mi-san has made her intentions plain. I still find it hard to believe, but… I wish her well.” Hayato finished. It was Karen-chan who agreed.
“Yes. She’s really thrown herself into the work. Sometimes she even helps me out with my tasks. And she’s very close to Hinata-chan. If you think about it, it would be quite the romantic story, if not for… other factors.”
“About what… fourteen, fifteen… other factors?” Aimi-chan giggled. “There are probably more. How do we know there are only two Valkyries, for one thing? And I’ve seen the way the pair of Kitsune eye him, when they think nobody is watching. Honestly, I’m both impressed and appalled. But…”
“It’s not for us to judge. We’re his friends, we stand by him.” Hayato insisted. “That aside, how is everyone feeling? Hopefully tonight we can run the Oracle Engine again. Akio-kun left the questions. And I’m curious to meet this so-called Dhampir.”
“If I wasn’t in a relationship, I’d be looking for her family. Vampire guys are hot.” Aimi-chan giggled, before her face fell. “Oh, from what it sounds like, that was tasteless of me, wasn’t it?”
“I’m afraid so.” Hina comforted her with gentle words. “But it’s a very you reaction, Aimi-chan. You always liked a certain sort of male Vampire fantasy.”
“It’s classic, as they are so domineering. Anyway… we’ll need to secure help from Shaeula, but it should be fine.” Aimi-chan changed the subject. “Oh, where’s Shiro? She was here a minute ago. It’s not like her to be low profile.”
“I think she went back to Tokyo with Arisugawa-san.” Shugo-kun suggested. “Something about refreshing buffs on the Tree?”
“Oh, makes sense.” Hayato smiled. “It certainly still seems strange to see Shiro working so hard though. But again, I think she’s happier now than she’s ever been.”
“Yeah, all loved up and with her own personal Goddess companion.” Aimi-chan laughed. “I can still hardly believe it. Shiro, our ice queen, she melted with Akio-kun. Oh, Hina-chan, Karen-chan, here’s our tent…”
“She just needed, wanted a hero. And up until now the world wasn’t set up for those.” Hayato shrugged. “Anyway, I’ll see you all on the other side.”
Entering the male pavilion set up, Hayato and the others were soon in the Boundary, and on seeing Hina, he couldn’t help but smile, though… I’ve time to flirt later. This is work, as strange as that is. With stronger Statistics and Skills, we can better optimise the Oracle Engine, and any other tasks. And… we’ll be safer if another disaster like the Church attacks happens again…
“So let’s go see whatever Kami is here…” Yasu-kun enthused. “I’m eager to squeeze out another Level in the Class. I feel it, you know? Right on the edge! I look in the mirror, and I think… whoa, Yasu, you’ve got ripped!”
“It’s… not entirely untrue.” Karen-chan managed a smile. “It’s very strange. As the Pilgrimage has continued, everyone involved has certainly changed. Just a little, but when it’s everyone…”
“You have too, Karen-chan, babe!” Yasu-kun insisted. “Not that you weren’t already great for your age!”
Hayato winced at that comment, and he wasn’t the only one, the girls did too, but Karen-chan, well used to such clumsy compliments, merely snorted, amused.
“Hey, it’s true!” Yasu-kun continued to dig. “Charm’s not everything, right? From what Akio-kun says, it only enhances what’s already there, and moderates imperfections! A hideous woman with a hundred Charm is still going to suck, yeah? Ouch!” He exclaimed in pain as Aimi-chan clouted him. “What was that for?”
“For reducing women simply to their looks.” Aimi-chan grumbled. “That’s why Akio-kun’s drowning, and you’re clinging to Karen-chan, who, if I may add, has my vote on she’s too good for you.”
Karen-chan laughed at that. “I don’t know. He has his charms. If anything, I’m too old…”
“Hardly. Chirurgery evens things up nicely.” Hayato declared gallantly, earning a subtle pat on the back from Hina, and a thumbs-up from Shugo-kun. “And you’re a woman worth pursuing, Karen-chan. An important job, charm, in both senses of the word… and the patience of the Buddha, might I add?”
“Best not.” Karen-chan giggled girlishly, again seeming like she could be around their age, fitting in well. “Shiro and Tan are very much offended if he’s mentioned.”
“Oh yeah.” As they bantered, they entered the shrine proper. Ahead of them were a bunch of noble girls of varying ages and seeing them always surprised Hayato. Like most people, I didn’t even know there were nobility left in Japan, since the war. Sure, Hanafubuki was half urban myth, half exaggerated tales on the internet without any tangible proof, but… like everyone else, I naturally assumed it was just where the rich sent their children to be educated away from the masses. “Fortunately, it seems Akio-kun’s not one for walking by.”
“No, he is not.” Karen-chan agreed. “And not just in that regard. He meddles incessantly, but his heart is in the right place. But enough about him… tonight’s a free night, isn’t it? Most of the senior figures are absent or have plans. Any ideas on what you’ll be doing after you’ve done with your Oracle Engine?”
“Thinking about it logically…” Hayato spoke for the group, as was usual in the past, though nowadays it was Akio-kun who called the shots. Even so, the default usually fell back to Hayato when he was absent. “…missing an evening of training seems no big deal, but… while everyone is together for the Pilgrimage, I’d rather take advantage. How about we go over a plan during the next few stops?”
“That sounds great.” Hina agreed. “I sometimes struggle to work out where I should be focussing my talents.”
“Got to be combat power.” Yasu-kun insisted, and Shugo-kun nodded, agreeing. It’s not like I don’t understand. In the manga we read, anime we watched, even Western superhero comics, power is everything. I think real life is far more nuanced though. Abilities that seem worthless can be used in creative ways to exceed mere might…
“Me, I’d dearly love to gain Split Thoughts. Then maybe I could keep up with my workload. Failing that, more Fortitude so I’m not as tired.” Karen-chan added, only for Yasu-kun to interject.
“Careful what you wish for, babe! If you do, you’ll only end up getting worked harder until you’ve used up all your gains. We’ve seen it!”
“You know, I think you’re actually right, Yasu-kun.” Karen-chan laughed charmingly. Unlike the younger women, she was still dressed in a business suit, but Yasu-kun seemed to like that, so… despite everything, Karen-chan seems surprisingly able to put up with his quirks.
“I think… and this is just a suggestion…” Hayato raised a hand. “…we should actually focus on trump elements for defence, and also… Ether Healing.” At their groans, he shook his head. “I know, I very much know. It’s horrific training, but… it’s worth it. No pain…”
“…no gain.” Everyone muttered, Shugo-kun adding that it was the unofficial motto of Akio-kun nowadays.
“For you women, there’s the beautifying effect, and it even apparently slows aging, or partially reverses it, at least in terms of soft tissues like the skin.” Hayato laid his bait. It is very much not like I would wish to be subject to the agonising torture from Hyacinth, but… having it is a huge benefit.
“I know, but… ugh.” Aimi-chan shuddered. “I suppose we have to do it sooner or later. Hyacinth’s always in demand though.”
“She is, but… if we succeed with the Oracle Engine, I daresay she’ll be minded to squeeze us in, and Shaeula can be our guide while she works on her own project, the one with the lightning.” Hayato’s words made sense, and everyone reluctantly agreed. Which is great. I don’t want any of us to get hurt, nor Shiro, Akio-kun, or even any of our acquaintances here on the Pilgrimage. That’s an impossible dream, but… at least if we are prepared, we’ll have a chance of preventing disaster. “Oh, just think about it. Isn’t it addictive, numbers going up? And Ether Healing opens up a lot of secondary options.”
“That’s true.” Shugo-kun agreed. “Though it’s very frustrating we can’t check our own status, and we need Akio-kun or Shiro to do it.”
“Technically, it’s Tan who checks…” Aimi-chan insisted, and after some back and forth arguments, their turn to meet the Kami came, and thoughts turned to other matters…
Yes, it’s certainly something. Like the world has become an RPG. If so, then we’re supporting cast for sure, but… unlike in stories, this is real so… if we try hard enough, we can achieve anything, with the right support…

Shiratori Himeko, The Boundary, Tokyo
“Good job everyone. The Tree is humming nicely.” Shiro puffed out her chest with pride, though didn’t forget to thank those who needed it. “Asha, your Tree really is a marvel. I can’t believe the density of aether and elements here. Oh, and without your boost to my buffs, Magatama, this wouldn’t be possible. Oh, and you’re as indispensable as ever, Arisu.”
“As a taxi, yes, White.” Arisu’s retort was dry, but Shiro could see right through her bluster and bravado. She may complain, but she’s secretly pleased to be relied upon and respected.
“So, getting us back won’t be a problem?” Shiro asked, and Arisu shook her head.
“Yata has my token. I can feel the ripples. And besides, I know Kyoto well. It is all about relative calculations. And velocities. Did you know the Earth is moving, and the solar system, galaxy and even the space around us?”
“Of course I did. I’m not that slow.” Shiro chuckled. “But that doesn’t affect your Room, does it? Else you’d die the first time you used it. Either appearing inside solid matter or cast out into the depths of space.”
“You would think that.” Arisu explained coolly. At that, their other guest, a tagalong, the surprisingly cute little German girl, who was definitely a Tanya, Shiro agreed with Akio on that, perked up her ears. She was getting used to the translation device now, and claimed her headaches were diminishing.
“The Favour does indeed use aether to do a lot of the backend calculations. After all, Akio-san has already established aether can ameliorate problems, filling in gaps we do not know how to understand, performing fixes to faulty workings.”
She’s in lecture mode now, but that’s cool. Arisu’s happiest when she’s the centre of attention, but in a good way. She’s far from bitchy or needy about it. Instead, she just comes across as a cool, older sister.
“So, it stands to reason that if one can offset the position with calculation or with the tokens I provide…”
“The cost of effort decreases.” Tanya spoke up, interested. “Is that why you can manage what you do?”
“Of course. Think about it. My Room moves outside the three physical dimensions of our spacetime. It should not matter if I choose to go a hundred miles, a thousand miles, or a million miles. But it does. That is because of the added cost in assuming a relative, not an absolute, position. Now I can minimise that, my range of influence is significantly increased, and I can utilise the Doors far more frequently.”
“I bow to your knowledge.” Shiro indeed did bow theatrically, a smile on her face. “Anyway, it’s annoying that even as Aki’s fiancée, I can’t check his Territory, but… you can, can’t you, Asha?”
The Dryad nodded. “Though do not forget, most of the ether is not stored here, but ferried to Kyoto for safekeeping.”
“For now, anyway. Aki will have an embarrassment of riches soon, I reckon.” Shiro pointed out. “But you can check the rate of ether growth, right?”
“I can. And…” Asha’s golden-yellow eyes were vacant for a second. “…it is… impressive. Wildly so. Is that because we are all sharing the escalation?”
“Yeah. Aki doesn’t even notice that level of pain, though that pisses me off, you know? And I’m not alone in that.”
“Is that so?” Tanya asked, curious. “I would have thought that it would be reassuring.”
“As an ally, certainly, Tanya. But as a lover, it just frustrates us.” Shiro disagreed.
“I am not Tanya! My name is Adelheid! Now you are doing it too!” She puffed out her cheeks sullenly, which really did make her look a little kid, despite her being quite a bit older than she appeared.
“When Pilgrimage is over, my little evil friend, we’ll sit down and watch your namesake! It’ll be fun.” Shiro ignored her protests. “Anyway, yeah, I don’t like Aki’s self-sacrificing nature. Though I suppose it did make my heart melt when he fought Tan for my sake…”
“I should think so, princess.” One of her eyes turned crimson, and the lazy, cold voice of Tan sounded. “Not many men would face down a Goddess, even for one they love. But yes, he does not understand. I too share your frustration. But… I am also feeling rather smug.”
“If I may ask, why?” Magatama was curious. Shiro knew that Tsurugi was sleeping in sword form, with Akio on his jaunt to Mount Atago, which she totally wasn’t jealous she was missing out on, and Yata was back in Kyoto, and while the three Tsukumogami sisters were often found together, it seemed that they could be apart without too many problems. I guess Tsukumogami are people too.
“It is simple. Our bonds, our Connections, are not shackles, but treasures. And we can thus control them a little. The escalating damage from Berserk Blessing Of Blood can be shared as we wish. I would not claim we can eternally handle it, yet… I am not fragile, and those Valkyries… they each take more than their share. So we can push it beyond what is anticipated, what he expects. Indeed, I surmise sometimes he even forgets it is active.”
“That makes little sense. How can he forget?” Tanya complained, and Tan merely snorted.
“One’s mentality is strengthened by growth, certainly, but… one’s mind will be protected by it also. Else great personality swings would occur when one gains a significant amount of Statistics, as he calls them. Resilience wards against that, but… it is a double-edged sword in some respects.”
“No, I think it’s a blessing. If Aki changed too much, I wouldn’t like it.” Shiro disagreed, enjoying Tanya’s expression, as she was effectively talking out of both sides of her mouth. “The point is, we have been overbuffing. Not just you, me and your Tree, Asha, but Magatama too. And we’ve let it run long past what should be possible. Basically, we’re cheating. Shit, it’s not supposed to be like this in a world like Earth, is it?”
“Most definitely not.” Tan agreed. “I am here, which is an anomaly, a greatly risky gamble, but one that I believed could bear fruit, yet even so… a confluence of disparate elements has been put together to exceed what is normal.”
“So to that end…” Shiro smirked at Asha. “…got an estimate for us?”
“Two days from now. Assuming we can hold on.” Asha stated, and Shiro shrugged.
“Shouldn’t be so hard. We might even beat that deadline, if the Berserk Blessing continue to scale as it has been. Shit, now I’m curious to see just what a Rank Four is like. All of Tokyo will be ours!”
“Not quite all.” Tan disagreed. “There are still a small number of other Chosen. But yes, our dominion shall increase dramatically. Then there is much to do.”
“No kidding.” Shiro agreed. “Anyway, mind dropping us back, Arisu? We’re done here for now.”
“I must return for the broadcast anyway.” At her words, she opened her Room, purple sparks scattering as the slash in space opened, Tanya viewing it with renewed curiosity.
“Great. In that case, let’s make sure we maximise our gains. I’ll be glad when Pilgrimage is done though, I could use a break…”
Tanya merely snorted at that, striding past her and into the Room without fear. Shiro exchanged a wry glance with Arisu, who merely shrugged, and with that, they all returned to Kyoto, via Arisu’s very clever calculations and beacon. Two days, huh? It’s been a long time, it seems, yet in terms of what it usually takes, almost no time at all…

Fujiwara Miyu, Matsunoo Taisha Grand Shrine, Kyoto
“The pair of you seem more relaxed now. It is good to see.” Miyu spoke gently to the two Shiraishi sisters, while her ever-present shadow Michiru was behind her as always, a comforting presence.
“Yes. I apologise for… for everything.” the elder sister, Nozomi-san, stood tall and full-figured in her Adamant uniform, chest straining at the white cloth of her shirt. With her long black hair tied into a ponytail behind her, she was quite dashing, and… that is a genuine smile. Not one to please me, as a daughter of Fujiwara house, who enforced the downfall of Shiraishi house, and in part, this outcome.
“It’s not just your fault, big sister!” the shortest, and almost the youngest, of the Pilgrimage, Arisa-san, cried. She was also wearing the Adamant uniform, and even though she was young, and far shorter than her tall sister, she was pretty and elegant and did not make the costume appear as mere fancy dress, but as a true uniform. It is harsh, making one so young responsible for the mistakes of her parents, yet… that is the way of nobility. Hinata understands that well. Fortunately… she had their best interests at heart. People may talk, but I know that Hinata’s motives in forcing them under Adamant’s banner were hardly impure. And so… they shall inherit the Tengokusentou, renewed with great ties to the faith, and restore Shiraishi house, free from their idiotic parents. And Shiraishi house shall support Adamant, and though that, Akio-kun, and our planned reforms. Hinata-san is certainly a schemer…
“I was engaged to and fooled by Takehisa… and also by Kuwahara house.” Nozomi-san mourned, though it lacked her usual self-pitying edge. I also note she has left off his honorific. As well she might.
“I therefore bear most of the blame. I see that now.” Nozomi-san finished, but Sakura-san, who was also with the group, alongside her bodyguard, disagreed.
“Your parents arranged the match. You simply did as all good daughters should and wholeheartedly tried to love your future husband. However, I still applaud your resolve.” Sakura-san shook her head, though again, Miyu noted that her hesitation, doubt and self-loathing had vanished, and she too wore the Adamant uniform boldly, as if it was the Hanafubuki school uniform, or a kimono for a traditional dance performance. I should like to see her dance now. Ageha-sensei says that hesitation is poison to true art. Sorrow, joy, love, hatred… all can make a dance wonderful, but doubt and confusion never can.
“I see.” Nozomi-san tapped her rank insignia, and Sakura-san returned the gesture, smiling. “I thank you for your kind words. I hope to live up to them. I just… never want Arisa to go through such a sorrow. I… I did love him, at least I think so. And he betrayed us and took everything from me.”
“Sister!” Arisa-san teared up, but she didn’t embrace her, knowing it would just make her big sister seem weak, and when she was growing, trying to be strong, such would do her a grave disservice. Even that cheeky young girl has learned some discipline.
“I dedicate myself to setting things right, now. And to Adamant. And all that entails. Gladly.” Nozomi-san bowed. “Miyu-sama, Sakura-sama, thank you for your consideration.”
“In that case, simply call me Sakura. I am as foolish as you. And we are now sisters in battle.” They exchanged taps of rank insignia, and Arisa-san pouted, clearly envious. Seeing that, Sakura lowered her head to her eye level, smiling. “Where your sister goes, you can follow, Arisa. If you face any difficulties, feel free to seek me out.”
“As her sister, I feel she should be speaking to me.” Nozomi-san actually managed a joke. “But I thank you… Sakura.” Her face was red. “Saying that… it seems so reckless. You are Takatsukasa Sakura…”
“Yes, I am. But I am also an officer in Adamant, and therefore we are sisters. Not through blood, but… through shared responsibility and purpose.”
“And we are in the same position, no, in fact, mine is a humbler one.” Miyu surprised them all by speaking. “Adamant is effectively a Vassal organisation to Akio-kun, but I am also his true Vassal, as well as a member, though I am not currently wearing the uniform.” She tapped her Officer insignia, which she had pinned to her kimono which she wore today. “So do not worry about politeness. I prefer a frank exchange, for we are all serving the same master. I too was foolish…” she assured Nozomi-san and Arisa-san. “…I was given such power, yet I thought it simply another blight on a life I felt was stifling and cruel. Yet… compared to others, I was blessed. It certainly took Akio-kun’s and Hinata-san’s efforts to make me realise.”
“It is my fault too!” Michiru agreed. “I did not support you properly, Miyu-sama! Fortunately Akio-sama and Hinata-sama showed this foolish ninja the way!”
“It seems we are all wrong. Yet…” Miyu’s smile felt natural on her face, she did not have to pretend, to be the perfect daughter of Fujiwara house here. No, she simply had to be Miyu. Sakura-san, the Shiraishi siblings, and not just them… she spied other students from Hanafubuki talking in small groups and even mingling with other sections of the Pilgrimage. …by nature, we were raised to be lonely. So the bonds of camaraderie are precious. Just as other bonds of affection are… Michiru nodded as she met her gaze, and her warm smile which was hidden beneath her crimson scarf, yet Miyu knew was there, reassured her.
“…we all have the chance to help each other and do better. And the beauty of our situation is… it is utterly fair. If we give our all, Akio-kun and the others will help us in turn, to navigate this mess called life, and to reach our dreams. This Pilgrimage is a case in point, no? The Tengokusentou shall be revived as far greater than before, still upholding the traditions and honour of the nobility, yet also gaining new glory and honour.”
“I still find it fascinating… Miyu…” Sakura stumbled over the lack of an honorific. “…that you have started calling him Akio-kun now. Your distaste for men is rather legendary, if something only whispered about at Hanafubuki when you were not present.”
“Yes. Even now, I struggle with my father, though… things are somewhat better.” Miyu admitted. “But Akio-kun…”
“…what right do we have to disdain him?” Michiru shouted eagerly, and Miyu held in a sigh. Michiru, I love you dearly, but… sometimes you embarrass me. And this will certainly be one of those times. Yet… it will bring us all closer together. Shared shame is as powerful, if not more so, than shared interests. I believe that is another reason why Hinata-san, Shiro and Shaeula set up Adamant this way. The secret, prickling heat of being seen as a sordid mistress to Akio-kun, even in the likely event it never comes to pass, judging by his personality and inclinations… we can laugh about it, joke about it, and as all have the same destiny, bond over it and become as close as blood sisters.
“…Akio-sama is our lord, it is our duty to do as he bids and thank him for it, on our knees! I still deserve punishment, for my crime of attacking Hinata-sama, but I was graciously forgiven, even rewarded…”
“…is… she all right?” Arisa asked, brown eyes a little glazed over at Michiru’s bold claims, and Nozomi shrugged, a little unsure.
“Oh my, yes.” Miyu held in a wry chuckle. “Michiru just gets rather… excited… over certain matters. And visiting her father’s home tomorrow might be further provoking her.”
“That’s not true, Miyu-sama. I believe in father’s teachings, not the village!” Michiru protested.
“If you say so.” Miyu smiled slightly. I think it weighs on you more heavily than you think. If only because you hate seeing your father insulted. Parents are… complicated. I suppose I can envy those who have a good relationship with theirs. Poor Honoka, alas…
Her cousin was throwing herself into the Pilgrimage and her role as Akio-kun’s ward in Adamant, which was certainly reassuring, but… I shall check on her later, before I begin to hone my Dances. Although… Sadly, to progress her Favour further, Miyu knew there was one line she had yet to cross. She had definitely resolved herself to broach the subject tomorrow, it seemed the day for it, yet…
I suppose it does not matter. Michiru has been practicing too. She is quite foolish in some ways, but… her loyalty and honour are without question. I shall never be without her. I understand Motoko-san’s thoughts on Natsumi-san now… I too would give up much for Michiru to remain my… not my bodyguard, but my friend… always. Not that I have to do such now…
“Everything has changed so much.” Sakura sighed, a display of emotion rather unlike her, as she was always so composed during school, and also at events and parties noble daughters had to attend.
“Has it?” Miyu disagreed. “If anything, we have more choices. I am more than able to refuse any proposals for marriage I do not wish for, as Akio-kun’s Vassal. He has promised I can wed whoever I wish, and he will make it happen.”
“Is Adamant the same though? Hinata… she seems very keen on subsuming the nobility.” Sakura mused.
“I think you will find there are ways other than marriage to do that.” Miyu promised. “I believe if you ask Akio-kun, and have your heart set on someone, he will certainly relinquish you. I have been under his care longer than you, Sakura. So long as you approach Adamant with dedication, he will not be cold.”
“I do.” Sakura promised. “I want to take control of my life. Adamant seems to be relinquishing such, but… I think you are wise, Miyu.”
“Hardly.” she sniffed, a little embarrassed. “It is as I have said, I was foolish and selfish. Only thinking of myself and my wants. But while Hinata-san seems calculating and sometimes even cruel, and the demands placed on us seem onerous and at odds with our upbringing… a little thought unveils her deeper plans. Akio-kun’s deeper plans too. Pilgrimage has shown me this in stark clarity. Hence why… I have decided to be less formal with him, and also with all of you.”
“I see it.” Nozomi nodded, understanding, and her smile was brilliant. “Adamant training is harsh, but… never at odds with who we are. Hinata-sama wishes us to keep our elegance, our sense of pride, and… just like as a daughter of nobility, we must keep ourselves modest and chaste, bring no shame. We simply uphold… more than our family names and ancestors.”
“Yes, exactly.” Miyu agreed. “And there are those women who have joined Adamant from other backgrounds. But they too are being honed, moulded. To be a noble daughter is to be a bird in a cage. A pampered existence, but subject to the whims of others. Here in Adamant, there is the cage still, but… our own efforts shall build it. It is a cage we can walk out of should we wish, yet…we choose the bars, the locks, and the door. And in return, we can flap our wings, safe from the demands outside the cage and there is great strength and influence when we flock together, which can resist the coercion of others.”
“Yes.” Sakura agreed. Behind her, Sayuri, her bodyguard, nodded. She was quite a shy girl, though Michiru declared her combat skills competent, if rather rote, but it seemed like she too understood. As does Michiru. In a way, Adamant is a lot like being a bodyguard to a member of the nobility. A commitment. Michiru though, with her… personality… can take her sense of duty, or rather her inclinations… a touch too far…
“I see it now. It is like when Hinata freed me from Takatsukasa house. At first, I felt she just wanted to steal it from me, get revenge for the fact that despite us being cousins, I was respected, and she disdained. But I know now, while she is ambitious, and was hurt by my, by the nobility’s actions… she was still thinking of my future, my happiness too. I… want to find my own value. Sparkle… like a diamond.”
Exactly. “Yes. To that end…” Miyu smiled warmly. “…we must try harder. And not merely in our lessons. While it is certainly not desirable to force all our ways upon the other members of Adamant, helping them comport themselves with grace and dignity in the pubic eye will be a worthy task. And who knows…” Miyu’s smile became a full-fledged grin, something she rarely, if ever showed. “…as our numbers grow, the need for higher Officer ranks will increase. I for one feel that four or five jewels shine prettier than three.”
“You can do it, sister!” Arisa spoke up suddenly, grabbing Nozomi’s hand. “I see it now. As the new head of a revived Shiraishi house, and mistress of the Tengokusentou, you’ve got to shine brighter than anyone!”
“No, Miyu-sama shall shine the brightest, serving Akio-sama to her last breath, and I shall be beside her!” Michiru insisted, and as even Sakura joined in, Miyu nodded with satisfaction. Yes, this is better. Competitive spirit, but… also individual excellence and pride. If anything, Ageha-sensei would be overjoyed. Our dances are our own labours, and we must improve, but… we also perform as a group of students, to show off the merits of Kyoto Imperial Style. Adamant is the same. Individual prowess, group pride. Just as the nobility was. No wonder it seems so comfortable. Hinata-san is clever indeed…

Zachary Wright, Matsunoo Taisha Grand Shrine, The Boundary, Kyoto
“It’s beautiful.” The young girl in what Zachary now knew was traditional priestess… they call them shrine maidens, don’t they… attire, red and white robes and pants, was looking around, her eyes giving off a faint glow. “I don’t think I could ever tire of this!”
“I certainly could, Kia.” her older sister, Mizuki Takakura, grumbled. Her own eyes glittered with a faint ruby light too, and Zachary held in a grin, not wanting to be subjected to the strange freezing effect, his muscles locking, once again. Hey, not my fault. I know I shouldn’t look, but… it’s hard to believe she’s not even in high school. Her other sisters are rather more… normally proportioned.
“I’m still getting phantom pain. I knew it would be bad, but… ugh, can’t he just knock us out and do it while we’re unconscious? It’s barbaric, surgery without anaesthetic!”
“Mind out of the gutter, Zack.” Beth, his sister, whispered, poking him in the side with a sharp finger. “I’ll not have my brother turn to cradle robbing.”
“I think…” the oldest sister, the cool, calm and elegant Katsuki, the very image of what Zachary imagined Japanese beauties to be, with a slender figure, pale skin, long black hair, and again the traditional red and white hakama, began soothing her younger, fiery sister. “…that they worry because it is an operation of the spiritual, which is very tied up with the mind, being insensible could lead to complications or even prove harmful. Besides, it’s over now, and you wouldn’t want to be less brave than Kiaria, would you?”
“That’s… huh.” Mizuki grumbled, gnawing at her lip in frustration. “Can’t he do something about it? Maybe ask that Christina woman to see what happens? She’s mad enough for it.”
Zachary and Beth exchanged a knowing look. Amen to that. Dad warned us about her, and while she seems a different sort of crazy to what he said, she’s… not quite right in the head, that’s for sure.
“I’m not a perv, Beth.” he whispered quietly, so that the Takakura siblings wouldn’t overhear as they waited their turn to make offerings. Raising his voice a little, he continued. “She’s right about Christina Bakker though. If anyone would try it, she would. Just… don’t end up volunteering as a test subject, willing or not, by raising it with her.”
“I’d never!” Mizuki pointed out, before crossing her arms defensively. “Hey, it’s you again. Listening in? I thought you didn’t speak Japanese!”
“We don’t.” Beth agreed. Today she was quite eye-catching, as one of the few women not wearing hakama or the Adamant uniforms. She was in thigh-high leather boots and a purple and black velvet skirt, black corset-style top, and long purple fishnet gloves. But what drew the eye was the translation device around her neck, and Zachary also had a twin to it, the next couple the strange ratman Ixitt had whipped up. It gave slight headaches using it, but it wasn’t unbearable.
“But we have these. Oh, and I apologise for Zack, he meant no offense. If he bothers you, I’ll kick his ass, promise.”
“Gee, thanks sis. It’s great you have such faith in me.” he drawled, though he wasn’t offended, as he was well used to Beth’s temperament. She’s always been flashy and quick-tempered. Me, I like to think I’m quieter and easy-going. Even my clothes reflect that. Indeed, he wore blue jeans and a fashionable black hoodie today. There are a lot of women here on Pilgrimage, but… I’m not stupid enough to try my luck. They’re all either too young, too risky, or too taken.
“I apologise for Mizuki.” Now Katsuki was bowing, and the two Wright siblings found that embarrassing, not used to Japanese ways yet. “She is rather self-conscious, especially around men.”
“I can see why.” Beth nodded. “Please, don’t bow like that. I know, let’s talk about something else. Christina, you say. Yeah, why don’t you suggest she does those trials and tests on herself?”
“I’d love to.” Mizuki agreed, before she sighed bitterly. “But much as I hate her and hate the pain, she looked worse off than us by the end. I’m still upset, but… it’s hard to hold a grudge after seeing that.”
“Yes, she looked awful.” Kiaria, the youngest agreed, shivering. “I didn’t like the Chirurgery, but… the world’s all sparkly and wonderful now. And it’s… like going to the dentist, maybe? It’s scary, and it hurts. But once it’s over it’s fine. The waiting before is the worst part for sure.”
“See, Mizuki? Kiaria is being brave. As her big sister, can’t you do the same?” Katsuki asked gently, and Mizuki snorted.
“All right, all right.” She puffed out her cheeks disconsolately. “I get it. If your trips to the dentist are that bad, Kia, brush your teeth better, okay?”
As the youngest girl giggled at that quip, Beth spoke up. “I still find it hard to understand. Maybe Zack and I are out of the loop, we didn’t go to this place much when I was injured.” She shuddered, remembering, though Zachary was overjoyed that her scars, the result of his blunders, were now wiped away. I don’t want Beth to hate her body or stop her finding love. Though it’ll take a brave man to put up with her moods and selfish behaviour.
“I just don’t exactly get everything that’s happening here. It’s like a game. Statistics, Skills… clearly they work, looking at your eyes, but…”
“It is certainly hard to grasp.” Katsuki agreed. “But you have heard the lectures, I imagine?” As they both nodded, she continued politely. “I would hardly claim to be as wise as those who provide such information, but one thing stuck with me. And it was… Miss Bakker…” Katsuki said that in English. “…who said it. To measure a system is to change the system so inspected. Maybe that’s why we gain benefits from having these Skills? I don’t know precisely how it works, but I do know…” She smiled at her sisters. “…we have our gifts, and it would be a shame to neglect them. I don’t think they are that much different from yours. After all, Takakura house was a house deeply involved in the worship of the Gods of Japan for more than fifteen hundred years…”
“I see.” Beth nodded. “Actually, I don’t, not really, but I guess I see why dad wanted us to come here, although…” She paused, face flushed with shame, and Zachary understood why.
“It’s all right, Beth. We’ve not done anything to be ashamed of. It’s not like we’d dare, anyway. There are those who can read minds here.”
“Like us!” Kiaria giggled, before tilting her head. “Maybe not yet, but soon.”
“I don’t need magic powers to know what men are thinking.” Mizuki rolled her eyes. “But yes, it would be nice to be special. And… at least our powers won’t have us sent to the front lines!”
I’m not sure thinking like that is wise. Zachary exchanged a knowing glance with Beth, before speaking gently to the three sisters. “Don’t neglect to train yourself for battle. Danger can come from anywhere. We know that all too well. And so do you.”
“Yes.” Katsuki agreed. “The Church attacks. Don’t worry, Mizuki is just being her usual self.”
“I’m not a coward, all right?” Mizuki bristled. “I just don’t want you or Kia getting hurt!”
“I know.” Katsuki smiled warmly. “Now then, our turn will be coming soon. Let’s chat about more relaxing matters, since you have those translation devices. How do they work? The German girl, Adelheid…-san…” She seemed unsure of how to address her, and Zachary was pleased that in America they didn’t have such tricky social mores to navigate. Beth felt the same clearly, as she cracked a smile. She’s too bossy, anyway. She’d just end up in trouble if she tried to follow such rules. Beth’s one for doing things her own way, a free spirit for sure…
“…she complains that her mind aches.”
“It’s not so bad.” Zachary shrugged. “Or maybe our versions have just been improved.”
“That’s right.” Beth agreed. “They are always tinkering and messing with stuff here. It’s like a guy who fixes up and improves old cars.”
“Oh, wasn’t that one guy you dated briefly, Beth? The gearhead? You said he was handsome, but so boring you couldn’t stand listening to him…”
“Oh shut it, Zack.” Beth flushed, waving her hands, to the amusement of the younger Takakura sisters. “You get to mock me when you date a decent girl long-term. Anyway, the device, huh?” She touched it idly. “I guess maybe it’ll be obsolete if you three learn to control your gifts?”
“Maybe so.” Katsuki agreed. “If we can return knowledge modified… then yes, I don’t see why we couldn’t teach languages directly, without much effort in rote repetition and learning.”
“And other… dangerous things.” Zachary pointed out, thinking back to Beth’s earlier unease. “Oh, but I’m sure nice girls like you won’t be causing any trouble, it’s just… oh, I don’t know…” We’ve been made welcome here, I don’t think it’s right to accuse them of having threatening abilities. It’s just… dad has got a lot to think about, and his job isn’t getting any easier. Now that our powers are out in the open, he’s going to get pulled into more difficulties, thanks to us…
“I think what my stupid brother is trying to say…” Beth covered for him. “…is that mind reading, it’s just… everyone has their secrets, don’t they? I don’t know if I’d be more scared of someone who has the power to kill me or know everything I was thinking.”
“I understand.” Katsuki agreed. “We too know it is a huge responsibility and would never misuse such gifts, such would be a betrayal of the Gods, and also of those who have helped us rekindle our heritage. But…” Her lips quirked into a pretty smile. “…it is not true that everyone has secrets.”
“Oh?” Beth asked, curious, and Mizuki laughed until her face was pink.
“Akio-san, apparently he just lets Chiaki-chan and Chiasa-chan, and Suzuki-san, dip in and out whenever they want. I suppose I can give him credit for that. I certainly won’t be peeking, I already know what I’ll find…”
“You think very highly of yourself, big sis Mizuki.” Kiaria chided cheerfully, and Mizuki mock scowled.
“Don’t cheek me, Kia! I know he’s always watching me, he can’t help himself!”
As the sisters bantered, Zachary exchanged another silent glance with Beth, and he knew she understood what he was thinking. This Pilgrimage sure is amazing, but… it’s amazing in ways that will really upset dad. Maybe… maybe he should consider his options? As for us…
“Don’t think about it, Zack.” Beth shook her head. “We’re not politicians, or government operatives. We’re just here for a holiday and… to learn a few things. Anyway, we’ve got to meet up with Hayato and Shaeula later, haven’t we? They want our help with something involving luck. Shame he’s taken, he’s quite the handsome, charming guy.”
Zachary nodded, but not before rolling his eyes at Beth’s superficial attractions. And she complains Akio only picks based on looks. Beth’s always been just as bad, like that dull car enthusiast. Wisely, he said nothing on that subject. “Yeah. Probably something else that will turn dad’s hair white. Still…” He watched the Takakura sisters banter playfully, their eyes glowing faintly red. “…what can they do about it? Copy it? Not unless they get Christina Bakker back, and… I don’t see it happening.”
“Yeah. The crazy bitch has the hots bad for Akio. It’s embarrassing to see a woman stoop so low and be so needy. Trust me, Zack. Women hate needy guys. I don’t know if men are as picky though…”
“For her? Trust me, we are.” Zachary shuddered. “Objectively she’s gorgeous, but…”
“Don’t stick your dick in crazy!” they repeated together, only for Beth to blush and apologise. “Oops, shouldn’t have said that in Japanese. Sorry girls.”
“Oh, pay it no mind.” Katsuki accepted their apology, and soon it was their turn to leave offerings behind, and Zachary felt his abilities strengthen just a little. Glancing at Beth, he could see she had gained the same boost. Yeah, this might not be as immediate as fighting battles in this Boundary, but… it sure is safer, and offers some rather more interesting results. Sorry dad… we’ve definitely learned the lessons you wanted us to, but… I still don’t think you’ll be that happy about it…
